The Unification of Italy, 1815-70

Rate this book
Planned with the A-level student specifically in mind, the "Access to History" series is designed to be expansive enough so that re-reading of condensed narrative is not required. This book looks at the unification of Italy (1815-70).

The Unification of Italy, 1815-70 is handy rundown of the events that brought about Italian unification.

The books divided up into five parts:

-Italy 1815-52
-Piedmont, Cavour and Italy
-Garibaldi and Italy
-Napoleon III and Italy
-The Kingdom of Italy

It's basic and very short (93pages), but there are study guides at the end of each chapter to help you figure out in what sort of direction you might want to take any further study.

My only problem would be that there are, at times, points in this book which are presented as fact, that are really quite contested.

An old a-level text book my husband kept. Very useful summary of Italian unification. And made me v pleased I don’t have to write essays on history any more.

A good, solid, IB/A-Level text on Italian Unification. The discussion of the roles of Mazzini, Cavour, Garibaldi, and Napoleon III in separate chapters is useful but slightly confusing as events are often repeated from each perspective. A chronological approach might be more appropriate for the less analytical. Excellent concluding chapter and brief discussion of the problems of Italy faced after 1871.
