The Whispers of a Lie - Original Sins: The Boy She Chose

Rate this book
Some choices are not mistakes.
They are invitations into something far bigger than you were meant to survive.

Original The Boy She Chose is a dark sports romance psychological thriller set within The Whispers of a Lie universe, written as a powerful standalone and the first step into a world where love, legacy, and obsession collide.

In a realm shaped by ambition, reputation, and inherited shadows, one decision binds two lives together and sets off consequences that ripple far beyond them. As elite sports, unspoken trauma, and quiet power structures press in from every direction, desire becomes dangerous and loyalty turns into a liability.

This story explores the cost of loving someone you were never meant to choose, the weight of expectations written long before birth, and the thin line between protection and control. It is a story of ambition sharpened by fear, devotion tangled with obsession, and survival that demands more than anyone is prepared to give.

Designed as a gateway into The Whispers of a Lie universe, Original The Boy She Chose can be read on its own while opening the door to interconnected series of books and deeper truths waiting beyond the final chapter. Each story in this world reveals another fracture, another secret, another echo of the lie that binds them all.

This is not a love story built on safety.
It is a story built on consequence.

For readers who crave emotionally charged romance, morally complex characters, and psychological tension that lingers, this is where The Whispers of a Lie begins again.

Dorian De LaRue is a storyteller who writes to make your mind work, to make you question what you read, and to look not only at what stands in front of you but at what hides behind each word. The weight they carry, the meaning they hold.
Dorian writes from a place where memory and imagination intertwine, where stories are less invention and more reflection. There is no clear line between truth and fiction in their work, and perhaps that is the point. Some stories are not meant to be neatly understood. They are meant to be felt.
The emotions that run through their novels, the betrayals, the obsessions, the wounds left quietly unspoken, come from somewhere real, even if the details are dressed in shadow.
Some believe Dorian writes to outrun the past. Others believe they write to finally understand it.
Whichever it is, the truth remains simple. Every word is an offering. A bridge between what was lost, what was endured, and what still refuses to be forgotten.
“We are all haunted by something. Writing is simply how I choose to stay still long enough to face it.”
- Dorian De LaRue
Perhaps Dorian De LaRue is just a storyteller chasing answers like the rest of us, weaving hope, heartbreak, and truth into every page, and trusting that somewhere, somehow, the right reader will understand.

Thank you Dorian De LaRue for allowing me to read and review an early copy of this book and give you my honest thoughts and opinions.

I loved this book! It starts off a little slow, then surges into an amazing story with characters and backgrounds you can’t help but love! It’s a love story, sports, and thriller all combined. Dorian hits us yet again with a surplus of twists and turns! This is one book you want to put on the TOP of your TBR!

What would you choose? Family? Or Love?

Happy Reading,
Crystal E.

With characters new and old, this is the prequel that delves into the early years of a much loved character and the truly heartbreaking events that led to them fleeing their home country.
I was intrigued from the start, unsure what I would uncover as this takes us on a different path. However, I was soon gripped in the emotions of the story and desperate to uncover the secrets it held.
Eager to read on to get to the truth, whilst knowing in the back of my mind there wouldn't be a happy ending and wishing to slow down.
Dorian once again showing he can do no wrong in his writing!

Book Review: The Whispers of a Lie-Original Sins: The Boy She Chose by Dorian De LaRue
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Dorian De LaRue’s book series captures sport, ambition, love and sacrifices that are made. This novel shows the backdrop of a competitive soccer world and what young players have to achieve. This series stands out by not only focusing on the game itself but also diving deeper into the complex lives of its young characters striving to rise above challenging circumstances.

At the heart of the story is Bebeto(my favourite character) a gifted soccer player from the Barrios. A poor neighborhood where opportunities are scarce. Bebeto’s journey from these humble beginnings to securing a better life for his family is both inspiring and heart-wrenching. His character embodies resilience and talent making him the most memorable and relatable figure in the novel.

De LaRue doesn't shy away from showing the steep costs that come with such a rise, adding layers of realism and emotional depth to the story. While reading I was able to feel the emotional connection with some of the characters making it captivating.

The novel also explores the bittersweet nature of young love through Veronica whose romantic young love feels authentic and familiar. The reality that some youthful romances are destined to falter. Meanwhile, the twin brothers Xavier and Iker navigate contrasting worlds filled with hidden truths further enriching the story with tension and intrigue. Their storylines adds a dimension highlighting the complexities of family and identity.

One of the most striking aspects of the book is its ending which is unexpectedly sad and very emotional. It challenges readers to reconsider their expectations and leaves a lasting emotional impact.

I personally highly recommend reading this series for readers who appreciate character-driven stories with emotional depth and suspense with a touch of sport drama. If you’re looking for a powerful story that balances the thrill of European style sport competition with heartfelt personal journeys this book is well worth your time.

Hands down my favorite author. Everything he writes, I consume. Everything is addictive and interconnected. The way that different genre's are connected make for a wild read. The First Lie series really set the tone and foundation for all the other books. If you love a psychological thriller, this series is for you. There are elements of dark romance, sports romance, and mystery, but at the core this is a psychological thriller that will have you chasing for answers from start to finish.

I want to say thank you from the bottom of my heart to the author, for allowing me the absolute privilege of being able to arc read his potential next book. I truly appreciate it.

I really enjoyed this flashback book. If you've read the other books in this series then you'll know what I mean. Well this holds a similar feel to the rest of the series it's attached too, it deviates a lot from it as well in regards to the descriptive writing structure and I really loved it! Well this book still pertains to teenagers and men in sports, it focuses less on obsession and romance, and more on the raw and very real power and emotion of humanity and I was totally here for it! Now there's still a little romance, a few nods and wonderful references to the other books, and there's still a lot of twists and turns, but this book is a more realistic YA, new adult thriller. As compared to its other bigger series novels which are more darker obsessive psychological sports romance that transitions from adult, to YA and slowly into new adult. I really enjoyed Dorian's ability to be able to bridge those gaps and combine it all together in a very large series of books.

This is also the first time I'm saying this but you could definitely read this book seperately from the others and still be perfectly fine. There is one key moment in it though, that would be a lot more fun if you read this afterwards, but you can definitely read this one and then the others independently and be perfectly fine too. This one will absolutely steal your heart especially If you really love thrillers!

Thank you very much again from the bottom of my heart for allowing me the absolute privilege of being able to arc read this book. I truly appreciate it and I know it'll make a great one!

I loved this book so freaking much!

This starts as a dark sport romance, all action and high stakes and then turns psychological thriller. The author did an outstanding job with this one. I have to admit I've loved all the books Dorian has written but The Audible Series and this one are my favorites. The level of detail and research put into this one are incredible, making the book very realistic and the characters relatable.

Here we have a new cast of amazing characters, I loved all of them, each different and unique. The plot is very intriguing and full of twists as always. This novel is super fast paced and addictive, it can be read in one sitting because believe me, it's impossible to put down.

I absolutely loved that you can read this as a standalone story but also as part of the whispers of a lie universe, as it's a short of prequel for one of the characters.
I had a lot of fun reading this, the ending is mind-blowing and I sincerely hope we get more books in this new series because this book was absolute fire.

I'm incredibly grateful to the author for gifting me a copy of this novel in exchange for an honest review. I was hooked from start to end.

If you want to read an amazing novel, dark sports romance mix with psychological thriller that you won't be able to put down. This is the book for you. Give the whispers of a lie universe a change with this standalone and get trapped into it's web of lies, drama, rivalries and mysteries.

**Where It All Begins!**

**The Whispers of a Lie - Original Sins: The Boy She Chose**

I am genuinely amazed at how Dorian continues to surpass himself with each new book. This prequel delves into the early years of some characters from his previous series, but can also be enjoyed as a standalone. It introduces entirely new and captivating characters on a journey unlike those we’ve encountered before.

While the characters remain obsessed with power and motivated by money, the focus has shifted toward sports and the pressures and betrayals they entail, with less emphasis on romance. However, romantic elements still exist. The story is filled with edge-of-your-seat moments that will challenge everything you thought you knew. You’ll encounter twists and turns that will astonish you, prompting you to flip back a few pages to catch the subtle hints you may have missed. This is quintessential Dorian—it's what keeps me coming back for more of his exhilarating and thrilling narratives. His departure leaves us with more questions than answers, and I hope this will mark the beginning of a new series of its own.

If you enjoy dark sports themes, psychological thrillers, suspenseful mysteries, and dramas filled with obsession, this standalone novel is the perfect entry point into the Whispers world. You won’t regret embarking on this journey!

I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.

This prequel takes us back to the early years of some of our much loved characters, and also introduces a couple of incredible new ones, Xavier in particular, who has swiftly taken a prime place as one of my overall favourite characters in the whole series.

It takes a significantly different path to the other books in the series, but still has the incredible tension, plot twists and jaw dropping moments we have come to expect from the author.

The new characters are incredible with power, money, betrayal, love and secrets all being driving factors behind their actions.

I devoured this book over two sittings and the second half of the book in particular literally had me on the edge of my seat.

The ending was spectacular and all I can say is I can’t wait for more!

Kudos again to Dorian for keeping me completely glued to the story! The book breathes fresh life into the TWOAL universe, written retrospectively yet bringing something entirely new. The cast is fantastic, the motives intriguing, and the story takes a new direction. Considering the shift, familiar elements like authority, power, threats, danger, consequences, and the sports setting remain, but the tension is still at a softer edge. Dorian crafted characters you'll love, and questionable choices that have no business lingering in your head. A book you dont want to miss. Grateful for the ARC opportunity.

Alvaro Roberto is at the heart of this story a football prodigy at sixteen years old caught between privilege vs poverty.
As Alvaro's family falls in the bracket of having financial burdens, despite having incredible talent he has to work hard to get to the top.
But what does sacrifice cost in the long run?

As usual Dorian crafted a story where secrets, love, betrayal unravel the story.
There were just a lot of characters to try and keep track of, I think if this was narrowed down a little it would have made for an easier read and been 5/5
I enjoyed this so much.
