Oh, Jesus... Of course SHE had to die. Fuck this.
I did, hovewer, liked that little, teensy tiny bit of discussion about women's place in society. And overall it was quite interesting to read, I dont think it's a bad book. I'm just tired of women's tragic lifes. I have enough of that shit around me.

Раньше не замечала, какой плотный текст в этой пьесе, как там много напряжения. Перечитывала в связи с просмотром спектакля Крымова - спектакль очень классный, безжалостный и жалостливый одновременно.

Персонажи все интересны и многогранны. Сюжет - совсем не для меня. Молодая девушка без приданого в царской России не может найти себе места в этой жизни после несчастной любви. Слабый характер героини меня просто убил, как и её (осторожно, спойлер).

This story will always have a special place in my heart, since it's the first one in a while that made me sympathize with a character to the point of actually crying my eyes out. To be fair, though - it wasn't Ostrovsky's doing. We have Guzeeva's performance in "Cruel Romance" to thank for that. Like so many reviewers here, I prefer the movie adaptation to the actual play, and it's that rare occasion where I would encourage everyone to watch rather than read if they don't have time for both.
However, I really enjoyed reading it too - it's very short, you can finish it in less than an hour, and it got me hooked on the plot almost from the very beginning. All of the characters were so painfully-realistic, but their actions still managed to surprise me. Surprise me with just how limitless the cruelty and selfishness of some people can be, and how far and insane can others go for love. And I know there are millions of other stories like that, but what's special about this one is how real and believable it felt. Even though it's fiction, I couldn't help thinking... yes, it happened, and yes, it hurt.
I could relate to Larisa in so many ways, and it made me realize just how lucky I am to be born in this century. How lucky I am to have so many possibilities and open doors, how lucky I am that I'm able to chase my dreams on my own, and that no one can turn me into a "thing" or a "doll", because I'm so much more. Larisa was, too, - she was a beautiful, intelligent, talented girl, who's fate was way too tragic, who died way too young, way too heartbroken, thinking she was worthless. And that could have been me if I was born just a couple of centuries ago.
Definitely my favorite by Ostrovsky.

Важко написати щось про п'єсу. З одного боку, красиво написано, гарна мова, все чітко та без зайвих слів. З іншого боку, враження не найкращі. Чомусь хочеться якнайшвидше забути цю п'єсу, викинути її з голови. Неприємні персонажі (всі до єдиного), сумна ситуація, дурна головна героїня та чоловіки з високо задертими носами, які уявили себе незрозуміло ким.
Чи то я стала такою цинічною, чи то просто настрій не той. Можливо, емоції вляжуться, і думки будуть уже не ті.
Але як би там не було, завжди будуть такі Лариси, які будуть закохуватися в таких ось Паранових, і історія ця аж надто сучасна.

Очень живое и правдоподобное описание уклада и привычек дворян и купцов конца XIX в. Язык очень точный и современный. Удивился насколько удачная экранизация у Рязанова. Она почти дословная, только сюжет поставлен в хронологическом порядке, а не с флешбеками.

Russian classic

Read the book and watched the movie "Cruel romance" (Жестокий Романс). Both are wonderful.
Loved the character of Mrs. Ogudalova the most.
