Scared Wheatless: Delicious Gluten-Free Recipes that Won't Make You Lose Your Mind

Scared Wheatless is a humourous book of recipes on the serious subject of healthy eating. The author, Mary Jo Eustace, has been in the culinary world for over 20 years. She's been a TV host, a chef, the author of multiple cookbooks and a memoir on her very public divorce with Dean McDermott. She's also a mother of two; a daughter with alopecia who needs a restricted diet and a son who thinks healthy food is the pits. Not one to be brought down by a setback, Mary Jo found out everything she could about gluten-free recipes, autoimmune disease and food allergies to help her daughter, herself, and all her friends who were struggling every day to eat food that actually made them feel good after eating it. For many of us, the idea of cutting out gluten or living without soy or dairy is the beginning of a nightmare and the end of eating anything that resembles a good-tasting meal. The secret, though, is that gluten-free doesn't have to mean boring and gross. Mary Jo has recipe tested each delectable dish in this new book to make sure it's not only healthy but tastes great! In Scared Wheatless Mary Jo talks candidly about her divorce, her family's health, tricking her son into eating healthy recipes, and provides comprehensive details on how to finally make your food pantry work for you. Tips, twists and experiments offer plenty of substitutions for different tastes and different dietary restrictions. Take control of your diet with recipes Mushroom Argula Frittata

Mary Jo Eustace is a Canadian actress, singer and sous-chef best known as co-host of the Canadian cooking TV series What's for Dinner? and, more recently, as the former wife of Dean McDermott.

Eustace was born and raised in Toronto. She attended Jarvis Collegiate Institute and McGill University studying English. She later graduated from George Brown College's culinary program.

Eustace moved to Los Angeles when McDermott went south to develop his acting career. They had two children, Jack Montgomery (born October 1998) and adopted daughter Lola (born July 2005). However, McDermott left Eustace to marry Tori Spelling and quickly became tabloid fodder. Eustace has since returned to Canada with her children and completed the adoption of Lola as a single parent. Eustace wrote about the break-up of her marriage in the book The Other Woman: Twenty-one Wives, Lovers, and Others Talk Openly About Sex, Deception, Love, and Betrayal.

Eustace appeared on What's for Dinner?, one of Life Network's most popular series, with Ken Kostick throughout its run during the late 1990s. Later, she served as a regular on Canada AM. In April 2007, Eustace reunited with Kostick as the original morning hosts of What's for Breakfast on new Toronto radio station PROUD FM, a station licenced to appeal to the city's LGBT community. Mary Jo stepped down from the show in June 2008, and subsequently co-hosted He Said, She Said with Ken and Mary Jo, a cooking show similar to What's for Dinner? on W Network which debuted in July 2008.

In 1994, Eustace recorded a solo musical album entitled Bone & Marrow.

Some people just can not eat wheat and some are trying to be gluten free. Scared Wheatless starts with background about the author and then gives numerous recipes using alternatives to wheat and wheat products. The recipes are simple and easy to follow. This was a free review copy through Goodreads.com.

I won this book as a FirstRead.

Scared Wheatless is full of gluten-free recipes to expand your dinner options. This book contains advice for those who don't have much experience cooking, such as how to boil an egg and the best way to cook different types of beans. I would say this book is for those looking for new dinner options but not really for picky eaters or those with food restrictions other than gluten. The author said she would try to provide milk- and soy-free options, but a lot of the recipes still seemed to contain things like Greek yogurt. The book is nicely presented, with a lot of pictures of the food and colored boxes with tips for serving or changing up the recipes. (Example: For the Hoisin Pork with Lettuce Folds, there is a box that says, "Why not try ... serving the pork on a luten-free hamburger bun like a Sloppy Joe? Or servicing over greens with sliced avocado and jasmine rice?")

I have been cooking and doing all of his grocery shopping to, help keep an eye on him. I decided to try to recipes from this book and oh boy...... yummy! Our favorites so far black bean burger and chickpea stew. I was presently surprised this cook book is full of beautiful pictures and amazingly yummy food!
