100 Key Points

Cognitive Behavoiur Therapy: 100 Key Points and Techniques

Rate this book

In the last three decades cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT) has been applied to an ever-increasing number of problems (including anxiety disorders, substance abuse, and eating disorders) and populations (children, adolescents, and older people). NICE recommends CBT as the first line treatment in the NHS for tackling a wide range of psychological disorders.

Cognitive Behaviour Therapy: 100 Key Points and Techniques is a crisp, concise elaboration of the 100 main features of this very popular and evidence-based approach within the field of psychotherapy. The 100 key points and techniques cover CBT theory as well as practice. Divided into helpful sections, topics covered include:

-  Misconceptions about CBT

-  Teaching the cognitive model

- Assessment and case conceptualization

- Homework (self-help assignments)

- Ways of detecting and answering NATs

- Behavioural experiments

- Intermediate and core beliefs

- Relapse management

- Third wave CBT

For the second edition of this book, Michael Neenan and Windy Dryden have revised and updated many of the points and several new ones have been added. This neat, usable book is an essential guide for psychotherapists and counsellors, both trainees and qualified, who need to ensure they are entirely familiar with the key features of CBT as part of a general introduction to the current major psychotherapies.

This book is exactly what it claims to be: an overview of techniques and key points related to cognitive behavioral therapy. It is easy to read, not overly technical, and doesn't go deep into theory. It does, however, provide a useful overview of relevant information. I would recommend it to any beginning psychotherapy student to help build up their toolbox of techniques. It can also serve as a quick review for more experienced clinicians.

The book was ok, it contains exactly what's in the title - 100 key points to get you started. If you want to get deeper in the CBT topic it will definitely not be enough for you.

I wouldn't recommend it as a starting point for CBT research as the amount of information explained briefly (each key point takes about 1,5 or 2 pages) might get one confused.

2/5 sounds like a low mark for the book, but this comes from my opinion on the book being simply "OK".
I think it would be a good read for someone to open up new topics to be researched for the future. Just enough to open up the appetite of those with curious minds.
