What if the world you know is protected only by a thin veil separating us from creatures born of myth?
James Crable has lived through centuries of war, betrayal, and faith twisted into fear. An immortal who has spent nearly a thousand years facing the things that slip through the boundary between worlds, he’s watched empires rise and fall and survived horrors most humans never knew existed. But when the Veil begins to unravel in a quiet Ohio town, the dangers that emerge are unlike anything he’s ever seen. And to stop them, Crable must face a past he thought he’d left behind.
The Keeper of the Veil blends urban fantasy with the sweep of historical epic, shifting from storm-soaked medieval battlefields to modern-day supernatural warfare. It’s a story of loyalty tested across lifetimes, a legacy broken and fought for again, and the impossible line between protecting humanity and losing what’s left of your own. With sharp humor, vivid characters marked by centuries of scars, and a world where the past never stays buried, Jack Calder’s debut introduces a warrior who’s lived too long to believe in easy answers.
Calder writes with the grit of historical fiction and the imagination of urban fantasy, grounding supernatural conflict in real places and real consequences. If you’ve burned through Jim Butcher’s Dresden Files or devoured Kevin Hearne’s Iron Druid Chronicles, The Keeper of the Veil offers the next step, an immortal protagonist whose wounds run deeper than his enemies, action that leaves marks, and a world where magic doesn’t fix problems, it creates new ones.
The Veil is lifting. What comes through will change everything.
Jack Calder grew up in Ohio, where he developed a Midwestern work ethic, an appreciation for quiet neighborhoods, and the ability to survive winters that felt character-building in the worst way. From there he took a hard left turn into the wider world, eventually landing in London, an experience that taught him to walk quickly, speak dryly, and accept that a “queue” can form anywhere, including places no line should reasonably exist.
Today, he lives just outside Washington, D.C., a region known for history, humidity, and traffic patterns so chaotic they should be studied as a form of dark magic. He shares this adventure with his brilliant and endlessly supportive wife, and with his three kids, now in college.
Professionally, Jack is an aerospace and defense consultant with more than 25 years navigating global strategy, technology programs, and meetings that could have absolutely been emails. His career has taken him across Europe, the Middle East, and Asia, wandering through airbases, innovation labs, and cities so old they make your soul feel young. He has lived overseas, traveled widely, and developed a deep and unwavering belief that the cultural heart of any place can be found through its food and wine. Preferably in generous quantities.
Jack’s love of history, mythology, and travel eventually collided with an inconvenient amount of imagination, leading him to writing. His novels blend centuries-spanning history with modern urban fantasy, weaving together immortal warriors, ancient brotherhoods, fragile Veil-magic, and the everyday reality of suburban Ohio. He writes stories filled with atmosphere, humor, emotional depth, and characters who are just trying to make good choices in a universe that rarely cooperates.
When he isn’t shaping new chapters, Jack can often be found reading, exploring local restaurants, overanalyzing the wine list, or pretending his frequent-flyer miles are “research related.” On rare occasions he also attempts yard work, but only when absolutely necessary and usually with poor results.
Jack is always delighted to connect with readers, fellow writers, and anyone who enjoys a good story told with heart, history, and a touch of mischief.
I was pleasantly surprised by how good this was. I loved the flash backs. I’m a history buff. Which is what pulled me to this book. I absolutely loved it from start to finish. The ending was amazing. The main character James was easy to love. I can’t wait till book two.
This first installment is absolutely breath taking!
Our male protagonist James is an immortal. The writer takes us through time and gives us a view of James history, he has lived many lives.
While in present time, the danger is lurking. A veil that has been there for over centuries is slowly vanishing and dangerous magical creatures will form a threat.
Jack Calder wrote a fantasy story, with detailed character building, exiting twists and turns and a companions coming together for a main purpose.
During the story there is one big question: “Who can be trusted? “
The plot will prepare you for the next chapter in this series. Can ‘t wait! 🤩
A fantastic urban fantasy and I highly recommend it.
I haven’t enjoyed an author’s voice this much in a long time. The way he describes things truly paints a picture in so many ways and to me, that is the mark of an author I would follow to the depths and back.
This book is full of one man’s journey into understanding. A striving for balance over things like religion and politics. It’s a beautiful story of found family after struggling for centuries alone. A sad story of watching someone so close to you turn into someone you barely recognize and must stand against. It’s also a story of an immortal man who stands up against the mysteries on the other side of the veil and saves the world again and again. So…a little bit of something for everyone. 😉
At times, the banter between characters was a little much for me but I am the kind of person who could (and mostly does) go through my entire life without a single stitch of small talk and I’d rejoice. And there are teeny tiny pieces of the story where I was like “ok…but what happened to this?” (The thing in the trunk. The guest after the big event.)
BUT the way Jack (the author) brings the “behind the scenes” character around at the end to wrap out this story was perfection and it made all the little things I was worried about disappear. (I had been concerned that this character was going to stay in the background and that would’ve made me very sad!)
Anyway - lovely story from a lovely author and I’m looking forward to reading all of their books to come.
The Keeper of the Veil by Jack Calder is an absolute gem of a book and an essential read for any fantasy lover. Calder masterfully intertwines elements of Roman Catholicism, Indigenous folklore, and a truly imaginative magic system to create a world that feels both ancient and wondrously new. The depth of symbolism and spiritual resonance adds layers of meaning that linger long after the final page. The story builds beautifully toward an epic final battle that left me completely breathless. Every twist felt earned, every triumph deeply satisfying. And then came the epilogu: elegant, emotional, and profoundly moving. It tied everything together with a grace that few fantasy novels achieve. This book isn’t just a story, it’s an experience. Hypnotic, heartfelt, and transcendent, The Keeper of the Veil deserves every bit of its five-star rating.
The back and forth flashbacks, the history, the suspense, thriller you could say as well
James is Immortal who has lived many lives. Folklore tales intertwines elements of Roman Catholicism , and it's just written like a piece of fabric, if you were to touch it it would turn to dust. The details, you could see the pictures in your mind as your reading the words.
So many twists, get small calm breaks and then .... Bam!!!! This book is an Experience.
James and his friends are Who you want for a lifetime, everyone has a perspective that is Sarcastic, calm, arrogant, direct, chill.
Quotes I enjoyed
Arnaut, "No trap lay in the words, only quiet interest."
James, "For someone like me, ordinary is rare, Precious, and always temporary."
"In a city where a smile could hide a knife, being entertaining was safer than being important."
Empires fall, kings lose their heads, continents trade flags, but there has always been something to drink the in morning. "
"because American lager tastes like someone apology."
The Keeper of the Veil was the perfect quick read for me.
In the book we follow the story from our MMC's view. James Crable is immortal and helps to keep the monsters on the other side of the Veil. With time skips into the past we learn to see the human history through his eyes and slowly understand the hardships immortality brings. We watch him slowly trust his friends and accept their help through their modern day skills. And all that while facing a threat from the past.
The combination of magic and humor plus the dynamic between James and his friends kept me glued to the lines. His friends are well written, especially with their unique knowledge, and I loved every single one of them. Since English is not my native language I would also like to mention that it was easy to understand. I didn't have to translate as much as in other works.
What I loved most were the comparisons of modern day society with the past. That humanity is still the same after all of those years but some focuses have shifted; that conflicts stayed the same just the reasons have changed. 》Men once reached for knives over dice and spilled ale. Now, wars begin over empty chairs and power outlets.《
I would definitely recommend it if you're into urban fantasy and historical fiction.
I really enjoyed reading through it and can't wait for the next book. I'm excited how the story will go on.
This book is without a doubt truly brilliant!! Combining historical and urban fantasy, it pulls you in from the very beginning and doesn't let up until the end...
🥰❤️📖✨️🔮✨️📖❤️🥰
A male protagonist who is immortal and lived both many lives and through many things, this story unfolds both through past and present...
Intensely incredible flashbacks detailing what James (main protagonist) has lived through and experienced all leading up to present day where danger is looming...
An absolutely amazing story with unexpected turns and plot twists, this incredible page-turner will definitely keep you guessing up to the end!!
"The Veil is lifting. What comes through it will change everything..."
I highly recommend "The Keeper of the Veil" by Jack Calder!!
I received a free advanced copy of this book in exchange for my honest and unbiased opinion, and honestly, I’m already ready for the sequel.
This story hooked me right from page one and stayed sharp, and engaging the whole way through. The alternating viewpoints between the present and the past were well done — and a great bridge build understanding of our MMC.
MMC in particular was a highlight for me. The author balances his grittier history with sly humor and unexpected refinement (his love for fine wines totally charmed me).
Plus, the Druid inclusion added an extra layer of mythic intrigue. Overall, this was a fast, fun read with a premise that pays off. Big fan — can’t wait to see where the sequel takes us because I want more!
I loved this story and it’s so well written. This book kept me on my toes. I love a story with magic, fantasy urban fantasy and medieval times. Our MMC has lived for centuries while traveling through his life flashing back and forth from his past and current life. This was a fast paced story and left me wanting more. Can’t wait to read book 2.
I was really surprised on how much I enjoyed this book. The MMC is an immortal that has lived many lives. This book has so many exciting twists and turns and excellent character development. Can not wait for the next book.
Great fast paced fantasy. Follow the tale of James, a thousand year old warrior determined to protect the world from a threat most don’t even know exist. The author blends a nice mix of history, religion and folklore in his tale of good vs evil. I’m looking forward to the next book in the series.
This book is far from my normal romance style but I struggled with it. The writing was really well but the historical theme was just hard for ne to get into but once they got to the fighting the demons I enjoyed that section. It wasn't the books fault I just struggled to relate to it.
Keeper of the veil... what can i say defenitly not one of normal choices of books i like read but for something that is not different from what i normally read, this book has a lot of uos and downs, lots of history between the main character and his past love the way it all ties together. Shows great feeling and almost feels like you are right there with them while reading.
Easily my new book obsession. This book is for those who love fantasy like Raymond E. Feist and Paolini. If the next book doesnt come out soon, I'll perish.
I am a sucker for magic in the modern world, especially when it's less about spells and more about nature and understanding. Throw in a ton of medieval action and bringing all that into a small community and this book is an absolute winner. The characters are understandable and easy to appreciate, the setting is familiar and novel all at once, the story is classic yet has a character all its own, and the feeling is fulfilling and attractive all at once. I can't wait for more from Jack Calder!
I really enjoyed this book. While it took me a bit to get into the story I was really hooked by the mix of history with the fantasy. Looking forward to the next installment.
I am blown away to find out this is a debut novel! This reads like an experienced author!
I love how the use of language changes over time, slowly adding in contraction and idioms as the MC moves into more modern times. Yes, the more formal speech sounds a bit stilted to our modern ears, but it really makes a point.
The flashbacks to bygone eras are clear and well reasoned. We are able to clearly see not just the MC character development, but that of the Vatican and the Watch, both organizations acting as full characters themselves.
The journey through time to protect the veil, encountering other cultures and creatures doing the same is a very cool spin. I enjoyed this enough that I actually ordered the paperback, something I rarely do anymore! Do yourself a favor and carve out a day to just relax and read. You won’t want to put this one down.
Absolutely captivating, I could not put it down, I can't wait for the sequel. Keeper of the Veil will leave you wanting more. Brilliantly written, I am hooked.
I was able to enjoy this book as an audiobook that I received from the author The storyline is definitely intriguing and interesting. This urban fantasy mixes a historical storyline steeped in lore with the bonds of friendships. I appreciate the author's detail to the bonds and friendship that were made between the characters throughout history and new friendships formed. I enjoyed the historical parts of the book that tell the backstory, this gave the story great depth. The overall story was hard to put down. I enjoyed listening to this tale and I am invested in hearing more about the Keeper of the Veil
The Keeper of the Veil is not my normal type of read, but I really enjoyed it. This was such an action packed, captivating read that I could not put down. I devoured this book in one sitting and I am excited for Book 2!
This was an amazing book. This is an urban fantasy with so much backstory and character development. We follow our main character James as he goes through centuries trying to protect the veil. The veil protects the earth from all these magical creatures. This book has amazing storyline where you travel through history, sorrow, friendship and most importantly magic.
Comparing this to jim butcher is right! This main character has do much ptsd its insane and now he has to do it all again…. This world is very alive and immersive. Loved it.
Since immemorial times, humans have sought answers to things beyond their comprehension - times when God's mysterious creation work was hidden behind gods who walked the Earth and magic was used openly by his chosen, who understood its fabric. Faith in a higher power filled in the gaps to understanding that the natural world is all about balance, a duality of good and evil and the line between them, or of the light and dark and the gray between them. The only certainty is life and death - or is it?
The MC is a dweller of the world born in a past where someone (the Creator?) had the foresight (at some time after Jesus Christ was sacrificed to save the good) to empower wise, honorable, moral men to guard it, for which purpose he taught them magic and made them immortal, and so the Watch came to be under the authority of the Vatican.
James has an unbreakable moral compass, his conscience is never corrupted by power or by time. He never obeys blindly, he follows orders only until his doubts of whether his duty keeps him on the right path drives him to take matters into his own hands and follow his compass. Here's a quote after druids were massacred by Arnaut on Vatican's orders and James couldn't stop him: “And you, Frater Crable? You seem less certain.” “I did what was required,” I said. “But I question what was necessary.” His eyes narrowed. “Faith doesn’t question. It acts.” “Faith built on silence is just fear wearing a cross.” The chamber went still. Alaric shifted but said nothing. Boniface rose. “You speak as though you stand above the Church. Remember your place, Watchman. You are our instrument.” “Instrument,” I said softly. “Like a blade.” “Exactly.” He seemed pleased. “And a blade doesn’t choose what it cuts.” Arnaut smiled. […] “The problem is you think too much. You’ve been given forever and you spend it doubting.” “I spend it remembering.” “Remembering what?” “The cost. The boy who screamed when the huts caught fire. The girl…” He frowned and looked away. “Collateral. Rome’s purpose is bigger than any one life.” I turned to him. “That’s what every tyrant says.”
Excellent writing, fascinating plot, well built world shown through the MC's POV and history reminding us that it repeats itself when evil insidiously overwhelms good. Just one more quote:
' “Rebuild the Watch with me.” I let the words hang in the air. “The Watch died for a reason, and long after I left its ranks.” “It died because it lost its faith,” he said. “Because men like Alaric turned it into a weapon of fear instead of revelation.” “And you want to revive it as what? A ministry?” “A cure,” he said simply. “For the sickness that’s devouring this age.” I felt the wards shift again, like they too were listening. “Speak plainly,” I said. “I see evil sprouting unchecked,” Arnaut said, eyes burning in the lamplight. “Not the kind we once hunted, not necromancers or heretics. A quieter evil. Apathy. Faith turned into entertainment. Power used to distract, not defend. Even the Church, the echo of it that still stands, has traded miracles for marketing. It’s the story of Noah, and Sodom and Gomorrah all over again. Men are deaf to the divine James. And you know it.” His words landed like an anvil. Because they were true, or close enough to sound like truth.'
If you like to read about esoteric mystery and long-time history, don't miss the story of why and how James self-appointed himself as the Keeper of the Veil and found anonymous heroes like himself to help him - you won't regret it.
I received an advance review copy for free via BookSirens, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Jack Calder's debut was an action packed page turner...I devoured this book and can't wait for the 2nd installment in this series. A trophy for my shelf is on my wishlist.
In this book we follow James Crable, an immortal warrior tasked with defending the border between world's from the monsters who slip through. Over the past thousand years he has seen the rise and fall of countless empires and has survived horrors that most humans never knew existed. When the veil begins to falter in a quiet Ohio town, James faces dangers unlike anything he has experienced and must face a past he thought he left behind.
"Discipline," he said, "isn't about obedience. It's about understanding why something must be done even when you hate doing it. "
The author did a nice job with world building. I felt like I was a resident of Centerville and was able to picture the places the characters frequented vividly. Flashbacks are used in this story. Mr. Calder does a good job with the transitions and world building in these segments as to keep the reader engaged. The flashbacks are used effectively, making valuable additions to the story and assisting in driving the plot forward. I was happy to read these parts of the story despite my initial apprehension because at times Flashbacks can feel extraneous.
Science and scripture are not enemies. They reflect the same light from opposite mirrors.
I enjoyed the historical elements woven into the story. The author seemlessly integrated the presence of The Veil into real historical events. Insinuating that the veil was the driving force behind these events. I also appreciated the involvement of the Catholic church...I cannot say much without spoilers but...the role of the church was appropriate for the time period.
Over time, you learn that guilt left to rot turns poisonous. Guilt channeled into action becomes something softer.
The characters were fun and loveable. They were well developed for a first book in the trilogy and I look forward to learning more about some of the supporting characters in future books in the series. The creatures who serve as guardians of The Veil in various places around the world are rooted in local legends. They fit with the mythology of their geographical location in the real world. This was a nice touch given this is an Urban Fantasy.
Lastly, as a math and science nerd myself, the use of mathematics in the magic system was a nice touch.
I think this is a fantastic debut and I can't wait to continue this series.
All the opinions above are my own. I received this book as an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
The Keeper of the Veil is one of those rare debut novels that feels confident, immersive, and fully realised from page one. The plot is intense and layered, with twists that genuinely land rather than feeling engineered for shock value. The story moves effortlessly between eras, and the way the past bleeds into the present keeps the tension tight and the stakes personal. The pacing is especially strong; measured when it needs to be, then absolutely scorching when things ignite. When this book burns, it really burns.
The prose strikes a near-perfect balance; clean, readable, and evocative without ever tipping into overwrought prose. It lets the story and characters do the heavy lifting, which makes the emotional beats hit harder. Every character feels understandable and grounded, even the antagonist, whose motivations are clear and human. Their growth unfolds naturally, and their choices — good or bad — make sense within the weight of their experiences. The relationships are a standout, layered with trust, tension, and history, and they carry a warmth and authenticity that recalls the character-driven heart found in the best of Dean Koontz’s work.
As a first book, this is seriously impressive. The concept is strong, the execution confident, and the world feels lived-in rather than explained at you. It blends urban fantasy and historical grit in a way that feels fresh, while still scratching that itch for readers who love long-lived protagonists and complex storytelling. I loved every page and closed the book already eager for what comes next. If this is the beginning of a series, I'll be there for the next installment without hesitation.
I received an advance reader copy and this review is my own honest opinion.
The Keeper of the Veil is the kind of fantasy that reminds you why the genre exists. From the first page, Jack Calder delivers a masterful blend of urban fantasy and historical fiction, woven together so seamlessly that neither timeline ever feels secondary.
At its heart is James Crable, an immortal guardian tasked with protecting a magical boundary between worlds. Watching James live across centuries, experiencing the events that shaped, broke, and reforged him, is profoundly powerful. His joy, fear, grief, and relentless sense of duty are rendered with emotional precision, making him an unforgettable protagonist.
One of Calder’s most devastating narrative choices is forcing James to face his former protégé, best friend, and brother, someone he mourned for centuries. Standing against a loved one is painful enough; standing against someone you believed lost to time is utterly crushing. The weight of that loss and James’s unshakable conviction to do what is right is deeply moving.
The modern timeline delivers top-tier urban fantasy vibes reminiscent of Jim Butcher or Kevin Hearne, complete with brilliant combat, wildly imaginative magic, enchanted weapons, and beautifully chaotic spells. The found-family dynamic that forms around James is heartfelt and rewarding, offering warmth against the high stakes and constant danger.
This book has everything great fantasy should: high stakes, rich worldbuilding, emotional depth, powerful magic, and a protagonist worth following anywhere. Once I started, I couldn’t put it down. In one word: EPIC. Jack Calder is absolutely an author to watch.
The Keeper of the Veil is a creative, engaging read that blends ancient Catholic and Druidic mythology with modern, suburban-American life. James Crable has lived many centuries and seen the rise and fall of eras, but for much of his time has belonged to an organization that guards and maintains the Veil, a separation between worlds. He is a lovable MC, whose long life means he has a collector’s eye and an appreciation for slow luxuries and pleasures.
Now a lone agent in present times, James and his mortal buddies in Centerville, OH find themselves confronted with the realization the world and creatures beyond the Veil are bleeding into their own. Even more horrifying is the emergence of patterns that indicate the change might not be random. Through flashbacks into James’ past, we see him grapple with moral and ethical challenges made difficult by the influence of authority figures and friendship obligations. This novel poses some brilliant rhetorical questions as characters navigate choosing the moral right while also honoring personal truths and oaths. It’s a story about friendship and growing apart, violence as a means to an end, and learning how to stick to your guns.
This is a great debut from Jack Calder! In a world of increasingly long and complex fantasy novels, I appreciate Calder’s concise yet descriptive prose and world building. I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves historical fantasy or mythology in their reads. Thanks to Jack and Book Sirens for the copy in exchange for an honest review!
