A superb collection of new stories from acclaimed childrens writers, compiled by former Childrens Laureate Michael Morpurgo. The pity, the cruelty, the courage and the consequences of many different conflicts feature in brand-new stories from Joan Aiken, Eva Ibbotson, Jamila Gavin, Elizabeth Laird, George Layton, Geraldine McCaughrean, Margaret Mahy, Michelle Magorian, Michael Morpurgo, Eleanor Updale, Celia Rees, and other top childrens authors. From the Crusades to 1970s Beirut, to the Falklands, many aspects of war are explored in a collection of work that speaks powerfully to todays young readers.
Sir Michael Andrew Morpurgo, OBE, FRSL is the author of many books for children, five of which have been made into films. He also writes his own screenplays and libretti for opera. Born in St Albans, Hertfordshire, in 1943, he was evacuated to Cumberland during the last years of the Second World War, then returned to London, moving later to Essex. After a brief and unsuccessful spell in the army, he took up teaching and started to write. He left teaching after ten years in order to set up 'Farms for City Children' with his wife. They have three farms in Devon, Wales and Gloucestershire, open to inner city school children who come to stay and work with the animals. In 1999 this work was publicly recognised when he and his wife were invested a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) for services to youth. In 2003, he was advanced to an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE). He became a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature (FRSL) in 2004. He was knighted in the 2018 for his services to literature and charity. He is also a father and grandfather, so children have always played a large part in his life. Every year he and his family spend time in the Scilly Isles, the setting for three of his books.
I really enjoyed this collection of short stories by some very talented and famous authors, including our very own Margaret Mahy. Each story brings different insight and a different perspective on all of the modern (and some historical) wars. Fabulous writing, truly.
What was the book about? This book is about a kid that never knew the story of his grandpa and why his face was deformed, so he invites his grandson to stay with him on his island helping his go fishing and when he's out fishing with him he tells the whole story, how he got the scars, the frinds he lost, the people he lost and people he met as well as places he's been to. What did you like about the book? I liked how detailed the battle scenes were and you could really picture them clearly. The book was very well written, and in that way it was very nice, but the story it self was very banal.
Were there any parts you didn’t like? Discuss. I didn't like how basic the book was because there is a lot of common plots in other books. For example the battles and all the other action scenes.
What was your favourite part of the book? I liked when he starts explaining it, when the ship he was on was sunk and he went on a life boat with other people and his friend holding his hand when he falls aswell and when he wakes up he's not there anymore, also that was the most sad part in the whole book, I almost cried.
Would you recommend this book to your friends at Halcyon? I think it was good but if you're looking for a book about war stories there much better ones
How many stars would you give this book? 3.5 Stars
I read the story real tears by. This story shows the reality of conflict how soldiers wanted to protect civilians from the truth of war. How a lady in a bar blames a soldiers character for the destruction and the soldier could say nothing but that it was his duty.

Collection of stories by 15 authors on war and conflict. This book that gives an account of war, soldiers, human beings, families and most of all how war affects every one.
i like how they have multiple stories in a book and i find them fascinating since their all not WW1 or WW2 stories like the second one is a book about someone who survives the crusade
