Only one woman can confirm his innocence, and release him from the torments of his past.
Determined to throw off the shackles of her convict past, Charlotte Oliver accepts her employer’s marriage proposal, even though she does not love him, and together they board a refitted whaling schooner bound for Sydney to begin their new life.
But life has a way of disrupting plans, and during the voyage the Zephyrus undergoes a mutiny. Captain Christian Charity loses his ship, but he also risks losing so much more. Charlotte has in her possession a tiny blue bottle and an Angel coin. On their own, they mean nothing more than a keepsake, but to Christian, they could mean everything – a past remade and a future with love.
Tea Cooper writes Australian contemporary and historical fiction. In a past life she was a teacher, a journalist and a farmer. These days she haunts museums and indulges her passion for storytelling.
Charlotte Oliver decided it's time to put her convict past behind her, and then when her employer Marcus Wainwright proposes to her she accepts. Although Charlotte doesn't love Marcus they board a refitting whaling schooner bound for Sydney.
Captain Christian Charity wants all his passengers to experience an enjoyable trip on the Zephyrus, but during the journey it seems tensions are rising between the passengers. Will everyone, including the captain arrive safely and will Charlotte begin to have feelings for Marcus?
Forgotten Fragrance is a very entertaining Historical Romance. Once again Aussie author Téa Cooper has written another very enjoyable story which I loved. Highly recommended.
With only a few months left to serve before she became a free woman, Charlotte Oliver accepted Marcus Wainwright’s marriage proposal – he had chosen her to be his servant when she had arrived from England aboard the convict ship Atwich in Van Dieman’s Land and she had been caring for him since. He had been kind to her and she believed that even though she had no romantic feelings for him, she would be happy in Sydney in their new life.
Hobart Town in 1844 and their view of the Zephyrus showed it to be a delightful looking schooner – much more pleasant than the memories of the convict ship which had been a nightmare existence. Marcus had been put in the Captain’s cabin with her in the first mate’s next door. The ship, which had previously been a whaling ship, carried cargo bound for Botany Bay and Sydney plus the two paying passengers. Captain Christian Charity was an obliging man, determined to make their passage a pleasant one. But there was trouble brewing on board – the first mate Henk was a scoundrel; a cruel and vindictive man who bullied those around him.
When Henk led the rest of the crew to mutiny, Captain Charity lost control of his ship – but worse, much worse was to come. And Charlotte was shocked to her core when she was confronted by her past once again. A past seven years old and one she never thought she would revisit. The fragile chain around her neck which held a small blue bottle plus an Angel coin meant everything to her – was it this keepsake that would reveal the secrets from her past?
I thoroughly enjoyed this Historical Romance by Aussie author Téa Cooper. A rollicking tale, fast-paced and gritty with a light touch of romance; I found it a quick and easy read. Charlotte had great strength of character and the story of her past and the events of the current day came together well. I have no hesitation in recommending Forgotten Fragrance highly.
With thanks to the author for my copy to read and review.
A dangerous and exciting tale of life in the penal colonies of 19th century Australia when, in an attempt to empty the overcrowded prisons of England, convicted felons were transported for seven years to life for crimes as small as stealing a handkerchief, to first degree murder. Charlotte Oliver is nearing the end of her sentence, served as a domestic servant to the sanctimonious Marcus Wainwright, preacher and self-styled do-gooder. Marcus has decided he will marry Charlotte as soon as she gets her ticket-of-leave and she believes this is the best she can hope for.
That is until she climbs aboard the Zephyrus, the ship taking them from Hobart to Sydney, and meets the handsome, and strangely familiar, Captain Charity. As the journey continues, Charlotte knows if she can’t be with Christian Charity, she would rather be alone than serve a life sentence with the increasingly violent and unbalanced Wainwright.
This story has non-stop action from beginning to end with all aspects of shipboard life impeccably researched and rendered in vivid detail. The author’s description of the brutal and bloody keel-hauling of the Captain was brilliant and captured the barbaric Dutch tradition of punishment so keenly, I had a visceral reaction while reading. Not only was the nasty Marcus easy to hate but there was also the powerful presence of the First Mate, Henk, who was the consummate villain. As usual Téa Cooper has delivered with another wonderful historical romance. Not to be missed.
Forgotten Fragrance takes you back to a time and place where everlasting love was possible even through adversity. Charlotte and Jamie were separated and transported when both were accused of her sister's murder.
Charlotte's sentence was almost complete and her benefactor, who'd kept her safe, wanted to marry her and start over in Sydney where there would be no stigma of her convict status. They booked as the first passengers aboard Zephyrus with it's new captain Christine Charity.
During the voyage, the crew unhappy with the changes Christian made, overthrow him in a mutiny. Christian is injured and Charlotte cares for him. He keeps smelling a fragrance from a blue bottle around her neck. It sparks memories. The memories Christian lost after he'd been tossed from his prison ship and saved by the old captain of Zephyrus.
There is never a dull moment in this book. The development of the characters is so thorough, you will hate or love them without hesitation. The plot and subplots will keep you reading the book through without realizing it.
Tea Cooper knows how to draw you into a story and keep you there. This is a must read!
Forgotten Fragrance gives the reader a whiff of something delightful. It takes us on a voyage to Australia’s “wild west” days, and the situations and events that formed that nation. A convicted criminal, Charlotte Oliver has few options to look forward to, so when she’s offered marriage she agrees with thanksgiving, never mind that her intended is about as appealing as a mud hen. What she cannot anticipate is that her life, and the lives of all those on board, will change forever when the engaged couple boards the Zephyrus, with the dashing but troubled Captain Charity at the helm. The characters are distinct and many-faceted, the writing strong and compelling. I enjoyed this sojourn south of the equator, and recommend it. Well done
Charlotte was on board the Zephyrus, a ship carrying convicts amongst other cargoes including two passengers, she and her employer~fiance. They planned on getting married in Sydney where the former whaling ship was bound. Charlotte was to serve out the 7th year of her sentence in Sydney here she and Marcus would settle until there was a mutiny and the new Captain before he plunged into the water to be keelhauled reminded her of a boy (a fellow pickpocket and her best friend in the slums of London) who was accused of killing her older sister Elizabeth who whored so they could survive. The boy's name was James Haggerty, he was sixteen and he disappeared... fell to a watery grave while on the convict ship that would take them and others to Australia. That was six years ago...
4.5 stars. Set on board the ship Zephyrus in 19th century Australia, convict Charlotte meets captain Christian Charity and wonders why he seems so familiar to her. This is a second chance love story under difficult circumstances - Charlotte is engaged to her master, the creepy preacher Marcus Wainwright. Full of fascinating historical fact (I never knew what keelhauling actually meant!), it's blended seamlessly into a wonderful historical love story.
