From the USA Today bestselling author of Rising Fire comes the next novel in the spellbinding series that explores the wondrous and tantalizing mystery of the Celtic stones…
Eons ago, seven ancient deities trapped the goddess of chaos under a ring of stones. But now, in the darkest days of the 13th century, Chaela threatens to escape, leaving the fate of all humanity in the hands of two young lovers...
Ran believed herself to be a normal fisherman’s daughter, until a turbulant storm unleashed within her powers she never knew she had. Those powers have drawn her into the battle of two warring factions: the Warriors of Destiny, whom she knows in her heart to be noble, and a menacing army holding her father captive. Her hope for survival is in the hands of Soren, the man she once loved, the man who betrayed her, and the only man she can trust in a raging battle against evil.

Second installment scores with me. And why not? Fierce Viking descendants in the harsh and beautiful Orkney Islands, betrayed love, secrets, gifts from the gods, stormy passions, and epic magical battles. It read quickly and my attachment to the storyline and characters was there at the beginning. I am now jazzed to meet the next pair to join the ancient gods' descendants and see what happens in their struggle against the evil goddess and those who serve her.
This is book two in a series. This one flowed right out of that one and would not make a good standalone or out of order. Its a new pair than the one before and the main plot is specific to this story, but the series arc is very strong with the previous books' characters very present in the latter half of the book.
The story starts when Soren loses his beloved grandfather, but not before the old man tells him some fantastic things and encourages Soren to believe that he has the power to control the air and weather. Only, there was an odd moment or two when the wind seemed to obey him and he got a burning mark on his arm. Soren is distracted when he realizes the woman he hurt and lost has returned to the island.
Ran left home two years before and planned to never return after Soren betrayed her and walked away. Her heart shattered and she agreed to anything her father demanded even an arranged marriage to strengthen a business connection and gain more wealth. She finds that she is not indifferent to him and her feelings are not just anger and pain. Her stupid heart still wants him. But she pushes personal issues aside to deal with the shock and confusion to discover that she has some sort of power over the sea and all water which calls to her. Soren seems to have some answers so they must work together.
Hugh does not lick his wounds after he lost to the fireblood and warblood. They may have sealed one entrance to the world from the place where Chaela is trapped, but there are other stone circle gates into this world. He knows the prophesy and what it means unlike the other Warriors of Destiny. He will triumph and restore his goddess to the world. For now, he needs to convince the newly risen stormblood and waterblood to open the gate which only they can that is hidden somewhere in the Orkneys.
Ran and Soren strengthen their abilities and hunt down answers while trying to resist the pull of attraction and their love which wasn't as dead as they thought. Meanwhile, the band of other Warriors makes their way to the island to unite with them against Hugh. Things drew to an exciting conclusion when Ran Waterblood and Soren Stormblood worked together along with their new allies.
Alright, so this one was good stuff. I saw marked improvement in things that bothered me in the last book that had the job of introductions and getting things set up and in motion. Raging Sea had the benefit of simply continuing the momentum just with a different pair of main characters. The pace was steady or fast and never dragged. Additional worldbuilding was dispensed evenly as needed instead of dumped. And unlike the first romance, this one also was just an issue of continuing after a break of sorts instead of two strangers hastily bonding after brief encounters. I don't want to give the impression that the first book was bad because it wasn't. This one is better, that's all.
As to the characters, I enjoyed this strong and tough heroine who protected her heart, but she was still fair and able to be a team player. Ran was in a dangerous situation trying to save her father and thwart a bad guy who knew a lot more about what was going on than she did. I felt like she was stronger in many ways than Soren even though he did the best he could with the situation he was given. He hurt Ran in the past, but not by choice and hurting her was torturous to him. He has feelings of guilt, but also a desire for another chance to make a different decision now that circumstances have changed. Like Ran, Soren marveled at his gift, but didn't take overlong accepting and using it. I loved seeing them work together as partners, but also as romantic partners, too.
"...Act as one. Rely on no one, but each other. Accept his strength, forgive his weakness." Aislinn to Ran from Raging Sea
In the last book, I was enamored with the villain, Hugh. I loved the complexity and conflictedness in his nature. Things were different in Raging Sea. The conflict was not evident. He is set on his path and only has one idea- free his goddess. He is sadistic and brutal. I usually don't care for getting the villain's point of view mixed with the hero and heroine, but I was glad for the few times that Hugh had the narration. He's fierce and terrible, but yep, I'm still fascinated.
A few times, there were opportunities for William and Brienne to narrate between Soren or Ran's larger passages. I appreciated this because it allowed for catching up with their story and to see Brienne finally shake off her hesitant nature and be a real warrior and leader alongside William. William is a fighter and there is nothing subtle about him. He is ready for battle and relies on Brienne to keep his battlelust that his berserker gift gives him under control. The priestly guides, Marcus and Aislynn, are joined by a newcomer in Soren's childhood friend, Father Ander. I was sorrowful over the loss the group endured, but intrigued by that bit Aislynn saw of her future near the end.
All in all, stronger installment, fierce battles, passionate romance, and strong characters in an epic fantasy style war of good and evil. Even though these are set against real world history, they do have a fantasy quality to them. I would recommend them for those who enjoy historical paranormal romances or fantasy romances with some spice and gritty action.
My thanks to Penguin Group for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review.
Raging Sea is the second book in author Terri Brisbin's Stone Circles series. Let's get all the normal mumbo jumbo out of the way and then I'll tell you what I liked about it. Although this book can be read as a standalone, I think you will benefit more if you read them in order. Near the middle of the book the characters from the first story join in with their fellow warriors. I really enjoyed watching it all come together. They really are starting their own little community against evil.
The best thing about this book is the fantastic imagery I was able to conjure up in my mind based on the author's descriptions. This is medieval times on the islands of Orkney we're talking about here and I felt like I was really there. Orkney has always been a place I wanted to travel to and it was an amazing feeling to be able to experience that with this book. I know I said this with the first book in this series, but I would love to see these brought to life on the big screen.

Raging Sea by USA TODAY BESTSELLING author Terri Brisbin is the second book in The Stone Circle Series, which is was so unique and spectacular and will give you chills and melt your heart at the same time! I absolutely loved the first mesmerizing book in this series Rising Fire, which was Brienne and William's story which had blown me away as well. This is a historical romantic paranormal fantasy with that just original, refreshing and imaginative as Ms. Brisbin's exceptional talent just spills over on each and every page!
Centuries ago there was seven Gods but one name Chaela fell from grace and became too reckless and evil where only wanted to take over and destroy the humanity. Chaela could not be destroyed, but with the six other Gods combining powers and chants they imprisoned her in the endless pit and sealed for eternity. Chaela swore revenge and would kill all their decendants in retaliation for her imprisonment. These decendants would be humans with powers to keep Chaela and her evil imprisoned no matter what the cost. These humans decendants of the old Gods are called the Warriors of Destiny!
Broch of Gurness Northern Coast of Orkney, Scotland Winter, AD 1286
This is the story of Stormblood and Waterblood ....
Farmer, Soren Thorson's Grandfather Einar Brandrson, whom everyone thinks is a bit eccentric and daft due to his chanting, rocking, disappearing and his belief in the old Gods and praying to them and warning an evil war is coming to end the human world! Soren thinks the same as everyone else until he started believing in the Grandfather's words as he tells him he can control the wind and storms as he feels the power running through his body himself. Soren feels it must be a coincidence and then after Einar dies leaving so many unanswered questions. Einar leaves some peculiar letters and maps so Soren has his friend, Ander decipher one of them since he is a priest. Previously Soren was afraid his Grandfather would be charged with his heresy and have all that is his taken away. Then as if all things haven't gone haywire the love of his life Ran Ragnarsor comes back to town after a two year absence, the one he betrayed two years ago, but will love forever. The one whose evil father shipping owner and fisherman,Svein Ragnarsor, the one he made an evil deal two years ago, which forced his hand and destroyed and badly ending the relationship with his Svein's daughter Ran, Soren's previous lover. Soren having not much of a choice or his Grandfather would have all that is his taken away and be sent to prison or worse. It was his Grandfather the man he owed so much to that was more like a father or his lover the woman he wanted to spend the rest of his life with. Life sometimes was not fair as either choice was horrible, but he couldn't see his elderly Grandfather being tortured or living the rest of his days in a prison. Soren forfeited his own happiness for his Grandfather, breaking his own heart and the woman he loved and still loves heart!
Ran Ragnarsor was betrayed by the man she thought would be hers forever and he is the last person she wants to see, but unlike Soren strange occurrences happen to Ran when she was near the sea. Plus she see's a aura of color surrounding Soren molten silver as he see's an aura of turquoise like the colors of the sea. They both have a marking on their arms that burn and appears to move. His was shaped like lightening bolt and her looked like waves in the ocean, the similarities were too great to ignore. The world around these former lovers seem to change, hearing voices, everything looking more vivid and brighter around them and this power they seeme to be able to control. What was going on Ran wondered, but Ran never wanted to see or speak to Soren again! The man who betrayed her and broke her heart. Now she had so many questions and the only other person she could ask was Soren's Grandfather. The elderly man who genuinely seemed to care for her and kept in correspondence with her these past two years she was away. Odd Einar never mentioned Soren in any of the letters, it was as if he knew her heartache without ever mentioning a word about it. Einar Brandrson might be only one she could trust and answer her questions. When Ran goes visits Einar she finds Soren instead not being aware of Soren's Grandfather's passing, things really start to unravel though she still feels his betrayal deeply. Plus as things start to get out out of control Ran discovers her father and his men are being held as prisoners by the evil Hugh de Gifford and his men, so the only person she can ask for help and trust is Soren Thorson.
Who to trust as the battle of good vs evil continues for Brisbin fans who read Rising Fire as Hugh de Gifford is again a major player in this novel to reprising his role as the minion of the evil goddess Chaela. He is using his fireblood power for evil deeds, wrecking havoc, murdering and whatever he can to free the evil goddess Chaela from her ungodly prison. He believes he will be greatly rewarded once she is freed. Also his birth daughter Brienne who chose her fireblood power for good and her mate William de Brus, the Warblood will be reappearing in this novel as well as the Priests, Marcus and Aislinn and others. Yet not all will survive this war as this group some might call heroes and heroine's, but overall they were the human decendents of the old Gods and warriors! The Warriors of Destiny who would make sacrifices with their own lives to keep the evil goddess in her prison -never to released on humanity no matter what the cost to prevent armageddon! As in all battles and wars not all will survive and come out unscathed. Hugh can feel Soren and Ran coming into their new power untrained and only has to convince them to choose him and his army evil over good since they are so new in their powers. Of course he plans to tempt and confuse them, making them believe he is the side which is good. Lies, deception, betrayal, torture and murder is what Hugh de Gifford's specialty is and in which he excels at. Of course all he truly wants is to free this evil goddess, gain power, and fortune - being at her right side no matter what the cost and who and what is destroyed! Which will Soren and Ran choose? You will have to read this spectacular book to find out the path and journey the young lovers choose.

I was drawn to the blurb for Raging Sea. It includes stone circles, the 13th century, new powers manifesting, ancient evil, and lovers drawn together to fight evil. Prime ingredients for a great fantasy.
This book is beautifully picturesque. Ms. Brisbin's ability to paint scene is well demonstrated in Raging Sea. I could feel myself wandering about the Orkney Islands investigating the stones circle right along with Ria and Soren.
Magic and mysticism, good and evil, gods and mortals. The drama fueled by these elements is fascinating to read about. The border between good and evil is clearly delineated so it is not hard to pick a side. On the good side, mortals imbued with godlike abilities are very human, with all the weaknesses inherent in men and women. The initial lack of trust between Ria and Soren is a huge obstacle to overcome. Almost as big an obstacle as the evil Hugh. Hugh, on the other hand, though he is also a mortal with the godlike fireblood abilities, seems to have left his humanity far behind. His single-minded purpose has left him with no pity, no conscience and no room for mercy.
The story of Raging Sea is constantly moving forward. Pages are ever turning. I was caught up in the story of Stormblood and Waterblood without having read the first book in the series, Rising Fire, so it does work as a standalone.
Occasionally, the writing slowed me down. One of the descriptions of the ritual they would follow was confusing. There were complex sentences that started in one direction, only to lose that direction by the end of the sentence. Also, changes in point of view were not always evident. I was reading an ARC. So the final version published may have dealt with some of these issues. But these things did distract me from the story. Hence the 4-star rating instead of 5 stars.
Overall, though, Raging Sea is a beautifully told story that is very creative and packed with action and drama. I would recommend this book to readers of historical fantasy.
I don’t know if it’s the book or me, but I couldn’t get into it. I didn't connect with the characters and the story was moving really slow. I may try to get back to it later.
Raging Sea cleanly picks up where Rising Fire left off. However, despite the clear continuation of the larger picture story arc, I had a hard time following some of the smaller plot points. There were some loose ends left hanging, particularly regarding Ran's father. His actions were attributed to "his greed and hunger for power" but it wasn't clearly explained how those motivations led to his actions. Also, I didn't fully understand the point of Ran's vision of the ritual sacrifice. The others in her party told her the steps required for the ritual so it seemed unnecessary to give her a vision. As for the spiciness level between the lovers, this installment of the series was a little more gratuitous with the spicy scenes than I remember in the first book.

Review:
Raging Sea is the second book in the Stone Circles series and takes place in 1286 A.D. Scotland, a time when Christianity has firmly taken hold and the ancient gods and goddesses have been cast aside by all but the most secret of followers. Eons before, Chaela, the goddess of fire and chaos, was entombed by her fellow deities, the gods and goddesses of war, healing, earth, water, and beasts, known as the Warriors of Destiny. She waits impatiently for her time to rise again waiting for the right ancestor to free her. Lord Hugh is Chaela’s earthly emissary, and he is desperately searching for the stone circles that are portals through which she may be released. The time has come for the descendants of the Warriors of Destiny to rise for the ultimate battle of good versus evil.
Everyone considers Einar to be simply an old man who has become a bit dotty with age, but he is really a priest of the old gods tasked with carrying on their legacy. Sensing his end is near, he realizes he has waited too long to tell is grandson Soren all that he needs to know and writes what he can in code on a parchment to be given to Soren upon Einar’s death. Strange things begin to happen to Soren, and he discovers that he is from the line of Taranis, a Stormblood able to command the weather. Soren broke Rav’s heart two years ago, and she is dreading coming home after a lengthy time at sea with her father’s fleet. But strange things are happening to her, too, and she finds that she is a Waterblood able to control all water. When her father is kidnapped by Lord Hugh, Rav must turn to Soren for help saving him and keeping Chaela from being unleashed.
I really like the premise of this series with its Scotland setting, and I enjoyed the first book in the series Rising Fire. However, Raging Sea seemed to simply rehash what went on in the first book with new characters. Soren and Rav were likable, and I wanted them to work their personal differences out and live happily ever after, but the truth behind Soren’s betrayal was too slow to emerge, and Rav forgave him too easily before she learned the whole story. I also liked Soren’s friend Father Ander and wish that I had been able to learn more about him. Recurring characters also made appearances, and they did add some much needed variety.
I am confident that others will find Raging Sea to be an enjoyable read, but it just wasn’t for me this time around. I recommend it to fans of dark magic with a good versus evil battle, those who like romance with their fantasy, and those interested in thirteenth century Scotland.

Once upon a time the hero and heroine were closer and more in love than two people could ever be. Then the hero betrayed her and her brother and broke her trust. But she never stopped loving him and even now two years later the idea of seeing him again is like a rush of blood to the head.
The hero has lived with the guilt over his actions and the pain it's caused the heroine for so long and even though he's innocent of the betrayal she thinks of him, he can never allow her to know it. Now she's back. Upon the death of his grandfather who raised him like a father, the hero is stunned when he begins to develop strange yet awesome powers over the wind and lightning. And he sees the changes within the woman he loves as well. The heroine is anxious to leave the place which gives her such painful memories but she awaits on her father. She too begins to discover power of water and feels the element call to her. Uncomfortable in each other’s presence and the amount of tension still resonating between them is almost unbearable.
The heroine has never stopped loving the hero but the fact that he slept with her brother’s betrothal and got her with child is enough to churn her stomach even now. But when she discovers the woman killed herself and her unborn baby, she's saddened all the same. And these new powers she and the hero have now are meant for something great and important-she can feel it. So, despite sore feelings and bitterness she must rely on him to see them through this new plot they find themselves in.
Descended from the old gods, the powers within have lay dormant-waiting for the ancient evil to arise so the chosen few could rise up and stop it.
This was by far a more interesting read than the first in the series. First off, the sexual and emotional tension between the hero and heroine was page scorching and it made me uncomfortable just reading it so imagine what they must have been going through. I adored the hero. He was such a good man-loyal and faithful to only the heroine and it's his love for her that made him fall prey to her father’s schemes which kept them apart for so long. Every time he we reach out for her, it broke my heart to have him retreat-knowing she wasn't ready to accept him yet. He allowed her to be free-to discover the truth on her and despite what her father did to him, when she asked for the hero's help in rescuing him he never hesitated for a second. And I adored the heroine in equal measure. She was hurt and distrustful of the man who was once her entire world but she's honest with herself that she still and will forever love him. Together they had awesome chemistry. I enjoyed the plot and mythology of the old Gods and priests and great evil. It was interesting and well written with a healthy amount of twists and turns. I'm actually looking forward to the next in the series to see where this author will take us next.
Raging Sea is the second book to Terri Brisbin's Stone Circles series. These books incorporate the mysterious Stone Circles found throughout Europe (a common one people recognize is Stonehenge). Brisbin created this premise of ancient Gods who worked together to protect humanity from one of their own who sought to destroy them. They had to trap her, because they could not kill her. Well now many years later, Chaela is trying to break free of her cage.
This particular book follows Ran and Soren who used to be lovers several years ago. Soren broke Ran's heart so she decided to leave her home and work on one of her father's ships. Two years after she left she comes back home for the first time. A week prior to her return, Soren lost his grandfather. He is very sad, but his grandfather left behind a lot of cryptic messages that he begins to pore over. Both Soren and Ran have some extraordinary experiences which leave them with knew unfamiliar powers.
Together the two must work to seal off the Stone Circle that Chaela is trying to escape through, and work through their past romantically because the two tasks are deeply connected. I really felt the chemistry between Soren and Ran. Brisbin was amazing with keeping Soren's secrets. She just lets you have a taste, then a little later a few more crumbs, and so on until you finally understand what Soren went through. The heat level is pretty high in my opinion, but it was done very well. Some experiences were a little odd in that the couple's powers took over and were described vaguely. The only thing I wished was for some more memories between the two of how they fell in love the first time.
I truly enjoyed this book much more than the first installment. I was on the edge of my seat wanting to know what would happen next. This historical is also a fantasy, so definitely be prepared for that. It is possible to read this book without reading the first one, but I wouldn't recommend it. I highly anticipate reading the next book Blazing Earth, but the end of Raging Sea got me dying to read about what happens in the fourth book. At least I think it will be covered in the fourth book. We will see!
I won this book in a goodreads giveaway along with the first. Honestly I loved this book, I did, but not as much as I loved the first book. I don't know what exactly is was that made me love it less and if I figure it out I'll let ya'll know but... I dunno. It was just missing something for me. This is still a favorite for me but it didn't pull me in as well as the first book. I'll need to think more on it after I eventually give it another read. I AM excited to read the next book already though. I really wish I could get my hands on it now but I have to wait. 3 Hum... Maybe I didn't like this pair as much? I adore Will and Brienne and almost wish I saw more of them in this book. I didn't really connect with Ran or Soren so maybe that's it? To be honest they frustrated me. You'd think I would have after recently going through a bad end to a relationship but I couldn't really connect with them. I mean having a relationship end like that even though it wasn't what it seemed would still leave some really nasty scars and those don't ever really go away even if you let that person back in. I've been through it a number of times and even now so the way Ran acted and felt didn't really seem right to me? I know there's a lot of other stuff going on that probably made it different but that's probably why I didn't feel much for the two MC's in this book. I love the series. I still mostly love the characters. This one just didn't pack the same punch as the first did. If that makes any sense? I'm probably rambling now I'm gonna shut up! I was up until just after 4AM reading this and didn't get much sleep so... Night ya'll! <3

My Review: So happy to have this installation! Brisbin really added everything to the cake mix in this epic edition in the Stone Circles series. Brisbin has created history, angst, emotional depth, passion of life, determination, courage, love, beauty... Raging Sea has everything. Our wounded heroes both of them give readers someone to connect to on a personal level because there is a journey that takes place both physically, mentally and emotionally. Readers go through it with the cast. You find redemption that breathes fresh courage into its cast and its readers. Raging Sea is a beautiful story from beginning to end that I enjoyed all the way through.
Initial Thoughts: I think I really liked this second novel of the Stone Circles. The romance between Ran and Soren was compelling, aided by their painful past. A painful past that was slowly revealed through the novel, along with the plot and the final confrontation at the next circle. I really liked how the plot lines were entwined and how the tension kept ramping up the closer to the confrontation we got. Though the ending was quick and a bit anticlimactic in a way (battle speaking), it was much more of a chess match. I really enjoyed the war of self that occurred. I was thrilled by the revelations of the end and very much intrigued by what will happen next. Ran and Soren were both strong characters and I liked that though they are strong on their own, they were much more formidable together. I look forward to the next novel in this series. I loved this book and would highly recommend it. It is a tale of good verses evil. It also has a lot of history about the Celtic stones. The story starts with the evil Chaela being trapped under the ring of stones to keep her from destroying all of humanity. As time passes she has been able to recruit others to help her escape. It falls on Ran and Soren to keep that from happening. The two former lovers have a problem with trust as Soren betrayed Ran years ago and she can't trust him not to again. Will they be able to get past the past and save the land from evil? The author is very good at bringing you in to the story and bringing the characters to life. This is a book that I really enjoyed and couldn't put down.
I received an ARC from the author for an honest review.
I really enjoyed Brisbin's second book in the warriors of the stone circle series! The two main characters are very likeable and the ways in which they come into their powers make good sense in the context of the story. I enjoyed how effortlessly it felt like I could be swept away by the sea or the clouds alongside these characters. As in the first novel of the series, there was never a dull moment! I can't wait to see what comes next in this adventure!.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
I'm not really a romance fan (so if you are, your review may be more starred) but this felt like the kind of fantasy I'd have read and forgotten instantly back about 40 years ago. The protagonists spend lots of time wandering around wondering if magic is real, then learn their destiny as good magicians is to stop the mage of doom freeing the dark lord from his prison ... been there, read that.
I missed the first in the series but still thoroughly enjoyed this second one. I liked how the two main characters had history and had obstacles to overcome.
I enjoyed the fantastical parts of the story and how they tied to the landscape.
An enjoyable read.

Fierce Viking descendants, gorgeous Orkney Islands, fantastical powers -- the second book in this series packs a punch as Ran and Soren battle evil and get a second chance at love at the same time. 3.5 stars
