I really enjoyed this story. The suspense was good and I liked the characters. I really liked how well everything wrapped up by the end. I do think the book dragged a little and felt longer than it should have. That said, it was a good read and I will probably read the next in the series.

Mistletoe and Malice is the first book that I have read by Lori DeJong, but it won't be my last.

I loved Riley Hudson. I love how mission-minded she is, her charitable work, and her love for all people, especially those in need. I appreciated how strong her faith is, but I love the realistic portrayal when her faith is tested.

Colton is just coming off a long stint in London when he is tasked with being a bodyguard to Riley. Assuming he knows all about her and her type, he doesn't bother reading the file on her. I was so annoyed with his assumptions, but he quickly realized his mistake.

Colton's faith is struggling, which you can understand when it is revealed why. I loved the interactions between him and Riley. Neither one holds back, which means they speak hard truths that the other needs to hear. Spending all their time together builds a bond that neither is expecting.

There is so much I could say, but the bottom line is that this is a well-written, contemporary suspense novel, with likeable characters you will be rooting for. The suspense is not rushed, and the story progresses at a natural, believable pace. I highly recommend this one!

Thank you to the author and JustReads for the opportunity to read this book. I was not required to provide a positive review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Well, I have a new fave romantic suspense author to follow! From the first words of Mistletoe and Malice by Lori DeJong, I became fully absorbed in this story and stayed that way til the end, sometimes hardly daring to breathe from the romance or the suspense or the emotion. The faith conversations (the prayer!!!! Riley & I still haven’t recovered), the vibrant characters, the engaging banter, the heartfelt discussions, the steady pace, the kisses (be still my heart – the tenderness and passion at the same time!!), and the dual suspense threads all made it impossible to tear myself away.

Riley Hudson’s second first impression of Colton Blankenship is that he’s just glorified tactical gear, a cumbersome bodyguard she doesn’t want or need. Which is fine because Colton has assumed that she’s a spoiled heiress with nothing more to do than go shopping and get her hair and nails done. Boy, are these two in for a surprise as they get to know the person behind the body armor or the wealth. (Also, I adore how flummoxed Colton was when he first got a gander at Riley’s schedule for one day. That scene singlehandedly had me cheering for them to hurry up and fall in love because I knew they would be SO FUN together… and I was right.) Both of these characters are expertly layered and easily lovable, and I would very much want to hang out with them if only they weren’t fictional. And the chemistry between Riley and Colton?!? Sparks a’plenty with romantic tension so tangible you can feel it through the pages, especially when they’re at the ‘I’m longing for you but I can’t have you’ stage. I’m pretty sure I used my Kindle as a fan a couple times (or tried… it’s not very breezy), but I also welled up with tears at the absolute tenderness in their relationship. Riley’s friend group and Colton’s colleagues collectively provide a wonderful support system for these two, and I genuinely enjoyed all of them too.

The suspense in Mistletoe and Malice has two separate aspects, which may or may not be related. One is more high-alert and intense, driving the action and the need for Riley’s newly acquired protection detail. The other forms more of a background intrigue, giving us opportunity to see Riley in her element as a defense attorney for the wrongfully accused. Both are high stakes at their core, one immediately so and one more long-term, and you’ll easily become as invested as I did. Just don’t forget to breathe as we navigate some surprising twists and some heart-in-your-throat moments along with Riley and Colton and their crew. Plus, we get to see super-swoony-and-especially-when-he’s-being-protective Colton in action as the lead on Riley’s security detail and… I may need to read this book again as soon as possible just for that reason.

Bottom Line: Mistletoe and Malice is everything I want in a romantic suspense – danger that keeps you breathless, characters you can’t help falling for, and a love story that makes your heart squeeze in the best way. Lori DeJong balances swoony chemistry and high-stakes tension so beautifully that I honestly couldn’t decide which had me holding my breath more – the threats closing in or the sparks flying between Riley and Colton. These two warmly drawn protagonists are just so good together – and as individuals – that it was a pleasure getting to know them. Add in heartfelt faith threads, an unforgettable supporting cast, and moments that made me laugh, tear up, and fan myself (sometimes all at once), and this one easily earns a top spot on my ‘best of 2025’ and my re-read list too.

Mistletoe and Malice had me from the very start. This is the second book I have read by Lori DeJong, and, with a switch in genre, she hit it out of the park with this romance-suspense.

After a failed abduction of Riley Hudson, she accepts her father’s demand for her to have private security. Even though Riley doesn’t believe that it is a targeted event.  As things begin to unravel, Riley takes on the case of a retrial for the person who was found guilty of murdering her friend. The suspense in this novel kept me on my toes, and the budding romance between Riley and her security guard, Colton, was the perfect touch. I loved seeing Riley’s heart, and even though she was rich, she chose to use her wealth to help and bless others.

This second chance at love romance was sweet and perfect with kisses only.

Lori DeJong did a great job of intertwining faith throughout the novel.

if you want a little suspense with your holiday romance, check out mistletoe and malice!

an abduction attempt prompts her father to hire a security detail, despite riley's protests. of course, if she must spend all her time with a bodyguard, colton's not a bad choice... will they figure out who's behind all the threats on her life before he ruins the holidays?

there's definitely a lot going on in mistletoe and malice, as danger looms at every turn. riley has the privilege of working with numerous charities in her community, while also working to free those who have been wrongfully imprisoned. her specific case in this story deals with the conviction of her murdered best friend's boyfriend. the setup in the first few chapters had me intrigued, but very little investigating is done until the second half of the book, unfortunately. most of the first half centers around her charity work, as the threats ramp up, so there is still plenty of building suspense—it just wasn't quite what i expected, based on the opening (but i still enjoyed it!).

also, while mistletoe and malice is set around the holidays, it isn't over-the-top christmassy. there's some scenes for thanksgiving and mentions of christmas, events, and hot cocoa leading up to the day, but otherwise, it's pretty day-to-day type interactions.

so, if you're a reader in need of some holiday romantic suspense (that's on the subtler side), mistletoe and malice could be a perfect seasonal read for you.

(i received a complimentary copy from the author and/or publisher. i was not required to write a positive review, and all the opinions i have expressed are my own.)

considerations:
—language: none
—spice: kisses only
—faith: strong themes
—content: attempted abduction, stalking, violence, mentions of murder

An excellent combination of well-developed characters, a sophisticated plot, an unusual villain, and a strong faith thread work in harmony to make this first book in the author's 'Guarded Hearts' Series exceptional . . .

I can't remember when I have admired and respected a heroine as much as I do Riley Hudson from this book! She is a young woman I would treasure having as my friend. She's kind, compassionate, thoughtful, hard-working, and inspiring. Her circle of friends stick together through thick and thin, and they work in concert to get things done.

Colton Blankenship, her bodyguard and the lead man on her personal security team, is keeping his own secrets from the past and he holds his true feelings for Riley close to the vest. He is a consummate professional in his job, but he can be prickly when anyone tries to get close to him on a personal level.

The villain who is trying to murder Riley is devious and a master of disguise. This person keeps Colton and his team on their toes and Riley remains in a constant state of high alert.

Throughout the story we learn of many ways that Riley works to make the lives of others better whether it be in feeding the hungry or acting as a pro bono lawyer. Her wealthy family is supportive of her efforts, and they are there for her in every way possible.

I found this inspirational story to be meaningful on several levels. It is a story with several important messages that will stay with me for a long time.

The book is completely clean in language and content. As mentioned earlier, the faith thread is strong and the themes of compassion and kindness echo throughout the story.

I received a copy of this book from the publisher through JustRead Publicity Tours. All of my thoughts and opinions shared here are solely my own.

I will look forward to reading the other stories which are forthcoming in this series.

Amazing story!

When heiress and philanthropist Riley Hudson is recovering from an attempted kidnapping, her father steps in and hires an elite security team, led by Colton Blankenship.

He and his teammates are determined to keep her safe and to find the person behind the kidnapping and harassment of their client.

Riley fights their overprotective approach and does her best to be a difficult client. But something in Colton speaks to her heart and their working relationship evolves into friendship.

This story is extremely intense and a definite page turner. I loved the characters and the message of faith woven through the pages. The conclusion is jaw dropping and very cleverly executed.

I can’t wait to read more from this new to me author. Highly recommend!

I thoroughly enjoyed this new romantic suspense by Lori DeJong. Wealthy heiress Riley Hudson saw something someone didn't want her to see and now she's in danger. Enter Colton Blankenship, her new bodyguard, whose life hasn't turned out the way he wanted. She thinks he's "tactical gear" and he thinks she's a spoiled socialite. Their journey of discovery about the other is endearing. You won't want to miss it.
The plotting and characters were stellar. I enjoyed the world DeJong created and am looking forward to the rest of the series. Sweet and clean with a strong Christian worldview.

When an attempted abduction happens to Riley, her father decides to hire a high end private security company until they can figure out who it was and why they attempted to take her. Riley is less than thrilled, she doesn't need any babysitters and with everything going on, will they even be able to keep up with her schedule? Colton and his security team quickly learn that Riley isn't like the other wealthy society women. Her scheduled doesn't consist of shopping, spa's and lunches with friends but she has lots of community work in process, her regular day job that she doesn't seem to turn off, and the pro bono case she just took on as well as all of the other side things she has in the works. Realizing how vast her network is, this could have been anyone! Having their work cut out, they work to try to figure out who could have done this and why. Riley tries her best to continue her life as normal with the constant shadows tagging along, but when another attempt on her life is taken they know that this was not just a one time incident or mistaken identity and Riley really is a target. Riley and Colton realize they must really trust each other completely to get to the bottom of things, and that maybe they both have more in common than they first realized. I really enjoyed this storyline, characters and how it all played out. I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from the author. I enjoyed reading Mistletoe and Malice, the first book in Lori DeJong’s Guardian Hearts series set in Houston, Texas. Riley is an heiress with a heart of gold who does pro bono attorney work to help wrongly convicted felons get their freedom in addition to her charity work.

An attempted abduction turns Riley’s life upside down. She relocates to her childhood home on a sprawling estate and isn’t happy when her father insists she needs round the clock security. Colton leads the security team protecting Riley and temporarily lives onsite.

Colton and Riley’s meet cute is fiery and their romance is sweet. They quickly become friends who can’t ignore the sparks of attraction. Unknown danger is a constant threat. I loved how Colton cared for Riley and acknowledged that he couldn’t afford to get distracted by his feelings. They both have emotional baggage to unpack during the story and obstacles to overcome.

The suspense plot kept me guessing and I loved putting together the puzzle pieces to work out why Riley was being targeted. The side characters were interesting and played important roles in the story. I loved journeying with Riley and Colton and seeing their faith journeys. Justice and forgiveness themes are explored in the story.

I recommend Mistletoe and Malice to romantic suspense readers who like friends-to-more bodyguard romances with forced proximity, unknown danger, a stalker with a twist, intriguing mysteries and strong faith elements in the story.

The title Mistletoe and Malice might make you think cozy mystery. But don’t be fooled. This is one nail-biter of a suspenseful ride!

Riley Hudson was born into privilege, but she doesn’t act like a stuck-up society princess. She was raised by parents who taught her to do good with what she’d received, and she tries her best to do so. Her career path, an attorney fighting for those she believes to be wrongly convicted, reflects her commitment to helping others. Her current case: trying to clear the man accused of killing her best friend.

Colton Blankenship is good at what he does. Since his wife died, he has thrown himself into work, diligently taking on security assignments to protect others. When he gets word that he’s assigned to guard Riley Hudson after someone tries to abduct her, he thinks he knows what to expect. Rich girl, pampered, probably spends her days shopping and at the spa. But Riley turns his expectations on their ear, and it isn’t long before both of them realize they feel more for each other than just protector and principal.

Riley and Colton are delightful characters! She’s kind and good, but she is not without a sense of humor and sarcasm. When she first learns that her father has secured bodyguards for her, she refers to Colton as “tactical gear.” That made me snort-laugh. Colton is so walled off at first, so resistant to letting anyone get close to him. But as he sees the kind of person Riley is, even when she’s in danger, he can’t help but feel those walls coming down.

I love the way DeJong let Riley and Colton get to know each other by seeing how they act in what they do best. Riley saw Colton’s protective nature and dedication to his work, even when she purposely didn’t make it easy on him. Colton saw Riley’s generous heart and concern for others, even when she herself was in harm’s way. That’s better than a meet-cute any day of the week (not that I mind a good meet-cute!).

And anyone who says you can’t have a clean romance that makes you a little wibbly in the knees needs to read this book. The chemistry between Riley and Colt is smokin’ without being spicy, and the romance is written in such a way that it complements the action rather than overwhelming it.

The suspense in the book keeps ramping up, and the malcontent targeting Riley seems to always be a step or two ahead. Could this have to do with Shane and Riley’s work to get him out of prison? Read and find out.

Action aplenty, wonderfully written characters, swoony romance – all these combined to keep me reading with a healthy disregard for the clock. This is first in a series, and I’m here for the whole thing. Highly recommended if you love good romantic suspense!

Disclaimer: I received an advance copy of the book from JustRead Publicity Tours. I was not required to leave a review. All opinions here are mine, and I don't say nice things about books I don't actually like.

Riley Hudson is Texas royalty. She pours her life into charitable organizations and social events, using her skills as an attorney to help others when her time and money can’t. But her latest case stirs up controversy when she determines to prove the innocence of Shane Everett, the man convicted of murdering one of her best friends.
Colton Blankenship is just returning from a high profile security detail overseas when he gets called in to lead a bodyguard team for the spoiled daughter of one of Houston’s elites. A random attack in a parking garage has her family scared for her safety. It will just be a few weeks of babysitting until this is all over.
Riley and Colton’s misconceptions about each other send them on a rocky start. When Riley’s random attack proves to be anything but random, they are forced to trust each other as they navigate the holiday season and Riley’s social schedule while trying to outwit a deadly stalker. But as their trust turns into love, can they keep their heads clear and stay safe as the danger escalates?

Pros: I don’t normally read romantic suspense, particularly anything that smacks of Hallmark. This book, however, was a refreshing read, and while most romantic suspense stories are predictable, this one kept me hooked. What I liked most of all was how Christ-centered the whole story and romance was. It didn’t feel preachy, it felt natural. While the hero had slipped away from Christianity, he turned back early on, so the story avoided the deadly cliche of missional dating.

Cons: Riley did feel a bit saccharine (her only flaw was poorly assuming Colton was nothing but tactical gear), but other than that, my only con was how long the book was. There were a few places that could have been tightened up without sacrificing the story.

Bottom Line: A Christian Christmas Romantic Bodyguard Suspense novel that manages to skate by the usual genre cliches and pitfalls.

Mistletoe and Malice
Guarded Hearts Series #1
By Lori DeJong

Riley Hudson doesn't fit the mold that society expects from her. She isn't a spoiled little rich girl living for her next post going viral. Nope she's an attorney who fights for the wrongly imprisoned, runs various charities, and gives her spare time to serve others. When she targeted in a kidnapping attempt, she thinks it's just a random attack, until it proves to be something more. But why?

Colton Blankenship is looking forward to 12 hours of sleep and then a vacation with his former college buddies. But everything comes to a screeching halt when he gets a new assignment - guarding the daughter of rich client. Oh, joy! NOT!! The last thing wants right now is dealing with a security detail for a society princess. Well, he's about walk into a case that defies his expectations: Riley is more than he expected and she does it well, really well. Now he just has to keep her at arm's length, figure out what's going on with his heart, and keep Riley alive.

Mistletoe and Malice opens with a glimpse into the past. This sets up the rest of the story - giving Riley a case to pursue while dealing with her near abduction. But how does one carry on while dealing with such an attack? That's what Riley has to figure out after being stuck with a team of bodyguards.

This is a jump into the action and don't stop kind of read. I stayed up way too late and got up way too early because I needed to know what was going to happen next. The is she going to survive this, why is this happening, and who is behind everything kept the intensity on the high end throughout the book. Highly recommended for those who want romance, suspense, and Christian faith to come together in a single well-written reading experience.

I was provided a complimentary copy with no expectations. All thoughts expressed are my own.

Thanks to JustReads and the author for my review copy.

Wow what a read I didn't want to put this book down. The book starts with a prequel and then the book starts a couple years later. We meet Riley who is an attorney but also from a wealthy family who escapes an attempted abduction. Her father hires a private security company with a 3-man detail for her protection much to her disgust. Colton is the head of the security team and instead of reading all the dossier assumes Riley is an airhead socialite. Which is so far from the truth. He figures it will be easy to keep up with her and admits he was so wrong.

Riley is convinced the attempted abduction was random until she receives a card left at her office. It takes a while but she realises she is indeed in danger. While there isn't the nonstop action of some suspense books there is still the constant threat of danger. I was constantly waiting for the next call, note or attempt to get to her without needing the constant physical danger. Reading how the security team work with screening venues and people working at venues Riley had to visit was interesting.

The personal side of the story was well written too. Colton is in a bad place emotionally and works to keep busy. Watching him work through some of his past and dealing with the emotions was interesting to see. It wasn't quick fixes but true growth. Riley too has things she needs to deal with.

The faith element is well woven into the story and is authentic. The story plays out well with the suspense ramping up to a satisfying ending. We also meet Riley's friends who are also an important part of the story. I can't wait for book 2 in this series which is out next year.

A refreshing Romantic Suspense. If you enjoy this genre, give this book a try.

I have high expectations when it comes to suspense. I really want to be on the edge of my seat with a story. I can assure you that this story did the trick!

It starts out with so much promise for Cait and Riley, friends from two wealthy families, until Cait is murdered! When Riley determines to get the man out of prison who was convicted for Cait's murder, someone starts to come after her and leave threatening notes.

The last thing Riley wants is a bodyguard, but with all that's happened, she reluctantly agrees... but only for 2 weeks! I will tell you that it feels like a lot longer than two weeks as she and Colton get to know each other as he's protecting her. She realizes maybe a bodyguard like Colton isn't such a bad thing and Colton learns that Riley has substance and isn't just a flighty heiress.

I love that while Riley is from a wealthy family, they are rooted in faith and give back generously! Their kindness and thoughtfulness shines throughout the story. Riley is a fixer and a helper. If she sees a need, she finds a way to fix it if she can. Colton has struggled with this faith since his painful loss a few years earlier.

Riley and Colton have some near misses with the threat to her life! She's got a great team of people protecting her, but the man they're after is a master of disguise. He keeps showing up places and they're completely unaware of it! The suspense gripped me from start to finish.

I also appreciated the faith thread that was woven throughout the story! Prayer was an important facet of the story! Riley clearly spent time in prayer, her family went to church, and their faith was evident throughout the story.

By the end of the book, I was champing at the bit for book two! I can't wait.

*Thanks to the author for the book. This is my personal review!

"Don't scream, Miss Hudson, or I'll end you right here."

After nearly being abducted inside a parking garage, Riley Hudson's family insists on hiring twenty-four hour protection. Although Riley is a well respected philanthropist and defense attorney in her own right, she is also worth a fortune, her family's wealth widely known among the general public. When Colton Blankenship from Peterson Security is assigned the lead role for Riley's bodyguard entourage, he assumes it will be a routine assignment accompanying a rich young woman on shopping trips and vapid outings. Nothing could be further from the truth, for Riley proves to be smart, stubborn, independent, and determined not to let an attempt on her life slow down her busy schedule.

In spite of Riley's insistence on maintaining normalcy, something or someone has triggered an escalation in attempts to taunt her from a distance, making it very clear that she is being watched everywhere she goes. As she becomes more and more reliant on Colton and his team, the two naturally share personal conversations which turn into discussions about life experiences, delving into dangerous territory for a man who has no intention of ever loving another woman.

This book had an impressive intersection of suspense and intrigue from the very beginning, the clarity of its characters gaining momentum as Riley and Colton became more transparent with each other and by association, the reader. Wonderfully appropriate faith elements add depth to the overall allure of this plot line with its comfortable pacing and romantic tension, marking the start of a series that I will definitely continue to read!

Are you like me--you are drawn to a book's pretty cover? Mistletoe and Malice by Lori Dejong was just such a book for me. That cover is gorgeous!
Houston Attorney Riley Hudson barely escapes an abduction. She doesn't like the thought of having body guards but after this experience, she agrees to accept her wealthy father's security detail.
Riley's new bodyguard is Colton Blankenship. He just came off of a big assignment and was ready for a vacation when the assignment came in. He made an assumption and thought he would be guarding a spoiled wealthy heiress. However, he quickly learns that Riley is an independent and busy lady.
Christian readers will like probably that Faith is a big part of this book. Riley has a strong faith. Colton's was shook when he went through some difficulties in the past but he is drawn back to his faith through the plot of the book.
Soon the two are starting to grow closer to each other as they start to have feelings for one another. Then another attempt on Riley's life nearly succeeds. Can Colton continue to protect her amidst his growing feelings for her?
Mistletoe and Malice is a character driven suspense novel. If you like getting to know your characters in detail, this is the book for you. For me, the details and slower plot weighed the book down so the suspense element wasn't as pronounced for me as it usually is in these types of books. I prefer my suspense books to be more plot driven. Mistletoe and Malice is the start of a new series called Guarded Hearts for this author.

Romantic Suspense is a fun genre to read. Mistletoe and Malice by Lori DeJong is the latest in this genre that I have read. It is Book 1 in the Guarded Hearts series.

I was very intrigued by the storyline from the first chapter. The setting is Houston, TX. The 2 main characters in this book are Riley Hudson and Colton Blankenship. Colton is hired to be Riley's Bodyguard after an attempted abduction on Riley. The story gets really interesting because Colton and Riley are opposites yet similar. Riley has grown up in a wealthy family and can be seen as "spolied", yet that is far from the truth. Riley has a strong faith in God and is a strong and independent woman. Colton struggles with is Faith due to a tragedy in his past. I really enjoyed seeing them gain interest in another, especially when danger still lurked and someone attempts to kill Riley. Colton has to make choices to protect himself and/or Riley and his choices just may help him be able to trust God again. The book has so many twists and turns, especially figuring out who is out for Riley. The Romance between Riley and Colton is soo sweet. The book is one of Romance, Suspense, Faith and "not judging one by their lifestyle". I HIGHLY recommend this to anyone who enjoys Romance and Suspense. GREAT BOOK!

Riley Hudson's best friend was murdered. And now, two and a half years later, Riley continues to work on the behalf of others, never having forgotten her good friend. Tireless service on behalf of the disenfranchised and forgotten. Healing for the broken. And pro bono legal work for those she believes were convicted while innocent.

Then, the danger comes. And Riley's father insists that a protection detail works to keep Riley safe, to her extreme dissatisfaction. Until, that is, Mr. Hudson is proven right.

There's this one guy on the protection detail that Riley can't quite get out of her mind. He's strong, smart, and has her back in every possible way. (And he's kind of a hottie. Who also seems to have eyes for Riley...)

But in order for the two of them to be free to explore their mutual attraction and faith together, they're going to have to capture the perpetrator. Whose attacks keep growing more and more blatant and dangerous. So that's the first question. The second is, will they survive?

Don't miss "Mistletoe and Malice." Exceptional read!

I received a copy of this book from the author. All opinions shared here are my own honest ones.

WOW! This new-to-me romantic suspense author blew me out of the water with her riveting novel. I was drawn in immediately by the near abduction of attorney Riley Hudson. She is a wealthy socialite but has struck out on her own path working to defend those who she feels have been unjustly imprisoned. Unhappy with her father's decision to provide her with bodyguards, Riley is immediately at odds with Colton Blankenship. He is the best-of-the-best - which her father has requested, but he views her as a spoiled heiress. Needless to say, they don't hit it off. But as things against Riley escalate and they work together to figure out who is behind the attacks, they begin to see each other in a different light. But when push comes to shove - can Colton open his heart once again or will he walk away from a dynamic, engaging woman who has shown him that money can be used for good purposes? Grab this Christmas-themed electrifying novel and snuggle in during the holiday season for a wild ride!

Someone is stalking Riley, a pro-bono attorney in Houston. Colton and crew are hired as her security protection. Riley and Colton hit it off, but everyone knows Colton needs to back off because he can’t be distracted from his job and her safety.

I loved Riley. She’s smart, works hard, has a huge heart, loves her family, is rich but doesn’t act spoiled or anything, and she worships Jesus. Likewise, Colton is a good guy, but his faith was bruised by a lost love.

Riley is trying to free a man named Shane from prison for what she believes is a bad murder conviction. I spent practically the whole novel trying to figure out if the stalker and the real murderer are the same person. Oh, the clues I missed! (Palm to forehead.)

This romantic suspense novel is so well written. It’ll appeal to both mystery lovers who like a little excitement (think “gun shots when Riley is vulnerable”) and romance lovers who like a slow-burn build up.

Great read, five stars!

This is a brand new author for me. This book had me on the edge of my seat from the very beginning. Although, I guessed correctly who the real criminal was at the very beginning of the book I did not know the complete reason why until almost the end of the book. I found myself laughing out loud when Colton became surprised at just how full of genuine activities Riley had on her daily schedule because he thought she was a stuck up heiress. I really liked every character in this novel expect of course the bad guy. While he was well written, I do not think anyone ever really likes the bad guy in books. I cannot wait until the next book in this series. I highly recommend this book!

I received a complimentary copy from the author. The opinions in this review are my own.

Attorney and heiress Riley Hudson uses her position and money to help people in need. When her life is threatened by an unknown assailant, Colton Blankenship is hired to be her bodyguard and protect her at all costs. But how does he guard his heart?

If you like to read romantic suspense that's clean, faith-filled, and well written, I recommend Lori DeJong's Mistletoe and Malice. The plot and characters are believable. The reader is drawn into suspense and romance that makes the book hard to put down. I received an ARC as a member of the launch team without expectation of return. The opinions expressed are my own.

For Lori's debut into romantic suspense, she knocked it out of the park! I loved the forced proximity/bodyguard tropes. The action scenes were well written and participating in the unraveling mystery of who and how and where really kept me turning the pages (or scrolling).

It was neat to watch Colton's growth and overcoming his past. Riley was almost a little too perfect, but then again I like it when all the main characters have flaws/internal obstacles to overcome during the story.

A great story that will keep you on the edge of your seat while demonstrating "How . . . the Lord restore[s] what once was broken. In so many ways."

Nothing says happy holidays like a good Christmas stalking book! :-) And this one written by new-to-me author Lori Delong is fabulous! Love the protector bodyguard trope and this story plays out over several months so there's lots of time for the romance to develop naturally -- not without some stumbling blocks, of course. Loved the way the author seamlessly wove an inspirational thread throughout the entire story. And the suspense kept me on edge as the tension gradually built until the final showdown. Perfect read for a bitterly cold day.

Riley Hudson is nearly abducted and her wealthy father insisted on a security team to protect her. She resents their constant presence, but grows to respect them and the work they do.

Colton Blankenship views Riley as a high-maintenance gal but soon realizes philanthropy is her passion. She has a vibrant faith.

They intrigue each other but Colton must stay focused. Someone wants her dead.

This will keep you on the edge of your chair.

Love, love, LOVE this novel. I almost exclusively read either Women's Fiction or contemporary Christian romance--not romantic suspense. But that's not a problem with this story. Mistletoe and Malice combines both romance and suspense in a way that's not too intense on the suspense part and a lovely story on the romance side.Lori DeJong

I really enjoyed this one! I love a good forced proximity and this was written well. Characters are well written and easy to relate to. I loved the whole bodyguard and person he is protecting storyline. This one has great suspense but also great heartfelt moments. I also enjoyed the inclusion of faith. It was well written into the storyline without being overdone or “preachy”. Great romantic suspense!

My first book by Lori Deming and look forward to others

Love how she incorporates God throughout the story, as if giving Him thanks and praise and appreciation for her writing skills. She is quite talented, keeping you in suspense and yet building the story to its climax. Her characters are strong and confident in their positions. She will be in my TBR list.

I spent quite some time writing a review for this book and when I clicked "post" on Goodreads, it flew wherever and I lost my entire review. That being said—read this book! You won't regret it. Judging by the cover it looks like a quick, light-hearted suspense Christmas novel. Wrong. I'm so looking forward to Book 2, 'The Quiet Watch' releasing in 2026!
