She desired his heart, but he’d given her that already. She asked for his mind, as well. He could work on that. But what kind of man was he to never have a body to give her, to never love her as she deserved?
Humiliation cloaked him, its scent worse than death. For death was final, the end of all things, but this uselessness he must live with and look her in the eye as well.

Harmon Ranger went off to war, a Confederate soldier full of bravado and courage. But two years later, minus his legs, he only wants to die.
He is half a man, now, and no man at all. There is no recovering from this.
Except his fiancé, Linnea Hewitt, says differently. There is life in what remains, she insists, and in her arms, the love he left behind.
A powerful short story of love and peace by best-selling author, SUZANNE D. WILLIAMS.
Best-selling author, Suzanne D. Williams, is a native Floridian, wife, mother, and photographer. She is the author of both nonfiction and fiction books.
Should've heeded the warning: "Scenes in this story may contain graphic and/or sexual situations not suitable for younger readers." It goes on to say they are "framed by Christian morals and solutions." Well.....that's sort of trying to toe the line both ways, isn't it? I won't be reading any more material from this author. I found the story had a plot that could just as easily have been captivating without all the "sexual" interplay. I was wondering how it could have been "framed" but I just think it's the author's way of justifying worldliness. Unnecessary, in my humble opinion.
Although this could have been a good read, the warning at the beginning should be enough to make you aware this was not a Christian read. "Scenes in this story may contain graphic and/or sexual situations not suitable for younger readers, but are framed by Christian morals and solutions." The focus of the story was good, but the inclusion of the above scenes could have been deleted and made this into a much better novella.
Set in the Civil War, Linnea waits for her man to come back and fulfill his promise of a life together. She visits the hospital daily, looking for her man to come back. One day he is there- but Harmon has lost both his legs. His attitude is now he is less of a man and can not fulfill the promise he made to Linnea before he went off to war. Linnea believes she can love him back to wholeness, that his outer shell does not matter- his heart and mind are whole and that should be enough to make a commitment. Does she convince him? You'll have to read this story to find out!
