The Human Forged
In an escape from the tethers of modern technology, former Army Specialist Nick Corrigan ventures into an underground rave in an abandoned Estonian prison. There, he is abducted and cut off from the rest of the world, including his fiancée. He unwittingly becomes embroiled in a biotechnological nightmare and embarks on a dangerous adventure to return home. The only person that might be able to help him is a man Nick never knew existed—his clone. Back in Washington, CIA analyst Sara Monahan makes a startling discovery while tracking the use of biological weapons in an ongoing war in Africa. She races to uncover a global conspiracy that may shake the very essence of what it means to be human. THE HUMAN FORGED is a thought-provoking thriller packed with pulse-racing action, global medical conspiracies, and scientific intrigue. It raises frightening questions about a future that may be just around the corner.

This book is unbelievable! It just cemented my long standing love affair with Sci-Fi. If action movies were turned into books, then this would be one of them. From the start, it had my attention. The details of the world he's created is intriguing and can very well come true in the next couple of years. The technology is something we've always thought of having, dreamed of even. This book gives us a preview of what it would be like if we were given a chance to experience that technology. Both the good and the bad are highlighted here. Nick Corrigan's journey through this crazy world where clones, hologram meetings and microchips is definitely an overnight read. And it's not just the advancement that's worth noting. The struggle to survive and the fear of getting caught are just some of the palpable emotions that's present in the story. This book will take you on two men's journey to freedom. One is from the government, the other from himself.
All in all, this book delivered in the thrill department, aced the sci-fi details and made me a fan of Anthony Melchiorri forever.

Good read. Very intense and believeable. Nick is moving with two motivations to return to his life and love and the drive to do the "right" thing. James is driven by a more basic survival instinct and the desire to be free! The degree of self awareness of the characters is truly what makes the story carry the reader.

A disturbing yet compelling look at human cloning and its ramifications.
Nick Corrigan is an interesting character, his actions and reactions were well depicted, and I felt for him.
The science of the story was described in some depth, making it all the more enjoyable. The action itself was fast paced, giving a good look at the lengths people might go to if this science was in the wrong hands.
Overall it's a great book that I would be glad to recommend as it is thrilling.
*I voluntarily read and reviewed this book, my opinions are my own*

Another exciting story by Anthony Melchiorri, following Nick Corrigan as his night out on a routine business trip to Estonia turns into an unexpected nightmare. Struggling to reclaim everything he loses that fateful night, he has to fight rogue security forces, unravel a vast conspiracy, struggle with self-doubt and paranoia, all with only one true ally at his side -- his illegally grown clone.
New readers get introduced to a future where biotechnology has revolutionized many aspects of life, with genetic engineering as routine as surgery is today. The believability is certainly helped by the author's relevant background. Those who have read Melchiorri's previous novel, Enhancement, will appreciate the hints scattered throughout the book, linking those worlds through the passage of years. Once again, he strikes a good balance between exciting us with his vision of the future, with the main focus remaining on the story and the characters.
The novel is a well-paced thriller, with many unexpected twists and turns keeping the reader engaged until the very end. The grand showdown is both surprising and satisfying, with a coda providing much-deserved closure to the reader as well as the characters. Along the way, it raises important questions on the ethics and implications of human cloning, leaving the reader pondering those issues, which to some (limited) extent are already relevant today.
Set in multiple locations around the world, the author provides immersive atmosphere with his writing, creating the perfect backdrop for his characters and story. The characters are very relatable, Nick's driving motivation -- wanting to get home -- perfectly understandable. A secondary protagonist, Sara, complements Nick's story nicely, and is similarly well-rounded. The real highlight, though, are the clones, especially James. Melchiorri wonderfully portrays their very different experience of the world, their development from naive to jaded as they "grow up", their conflicted personalities as a result of imprisonment, abuse, and their very nature as engineered human beings. This makes up for one of my only complaints, namely that Nick lacks a certain fire when thinking of his fiancée, or in high-stress situations.
Overall, it was an enjoyable, diverting story -- it's not a groundbreaking five-star epic, but Melchiorri's latest creation is truly worthy of (re)commendation and 4 stars.

The year 2094 is similar to the year 2018 except that the internet is even closer to you. Having a chip implanted into your arm and a special pair of lenses, gets you instant access to a wealth of information without the need of a handheld device, but anyone who has the chip implanted can be monitored.
Another example of dubious progress in 2094 involves military technology. There’s the usual non-biological technology, for example, drones. But there’s also biotechnology, especially the illegal military use of human clones.
What kind of action can you expect from this book? A narrow escape from vigilantes, a dicey prison camp escape attempt, dirty tricks in a sinister Eastern European nightclub, a trip through jungles and towns of Central America, trying to hide in a “house of mirrors” situation with one’s own clones, CIA intrigue in Washington D. C. and guerrilla warfare in Africa to name a few. If you’re thinking of giving this book as a gift, be aware that there is sparse swearing, drugs use and military violence.
The book is a regular adventure genre work particularly in its plot, setting and character development. It’s a bit cheap but it works fine. The author did a good job of keeping my interest and the ideas that were explored were interesting.
The main ideas revolve around the cheapness of souped-up cloning technology, compared to non-biological technology such as robotics. This point isn’t explored in detailed, Michael Crichton fashion. But the speed of clone production in 2094 makes it seem plausible. Hundreds of powerful clones can be “born” and made ready for battle in less than a year. Add to this that clones have no families or pasts. If they die, no one will miss them. Even worse, genetic technology allows a souped-up clone, a kind of military superman. And, finally, if clones are cheaper, non-biological technology will bust the military budget first and clone warfare wins. Sobering thoughts.

Enjoyable read utilizing scientific discovery and new (?) military vision.
From a Rave in an Estonian prison to the Congo? No, to Costa Rica, in hidden jungles where time, for some, stands still. Such is the case for Nicholas Corrigan, a special forces veteran. What does DARPA, ISIS, and military veterans have to do with Nick? In a world where cloning is considered illegal and unethical, the search for the "ultimate" soldier continues. What about children who are taken from their loving parents at a time too soon to see them go? Can they be replaced for a price? These are some of the issues explored by a bio-technical analyst and her computer-savvy friend at the CIA. How far or high up does the conspiracy go?
Melciorri has done his research well. Medically, his work is sound. I could find no fault with the methods used in his book. Militarily, though, his introduction to Palen, Fullton, and other Exo-suit special forces members seemed somewhat disjointed. He could have spent another chapter explaining that the use of an Exo-skeleton type of body enhancement has already been researched, not only in the context of an "ultimate" or "supreme" soldier, but also with uses in patients with spinal cord injuries. The initial experimentation was funded through DARPA, a somewhat secretive agency of the United States involved in the development of new military tools, bio-containment methods, and noxious gases, just to name a few.
Still, overall, an enjoyable read.

When Nick Corrigan wakes up in a strange place and staring into strange faces, he knows that something isn't right. Using his strength and fortitude, Nick fights for his life and determines to find out what is really going on in the camp where he's being held hostage.
Although this isn't my typical genre, I found this novel exciting from beginning to end. The author writes a flowing story that keeps the reader on the edge of his seat. Besides the suspenseful action and great characterization, the novel is flows with touching and exciting scenes.
Human cloning has long been a great science fiction story, but as science advances, the reality of it may not be so far-fetched. This novel is more than just about the potential of such an experiment, though. It delves into the integrity of such a situation as well as the morality of what to do with the clones who have been created. While the detestable people behind the experiments deserve to be punished, the same can't be said for the clones who exist. Nick feels for these clones and wants not only to stop the experiment but also to help the clones.
The author did an excellent job of plotting the novel. At first Nick is wary of his alibi, his only chance in a foreign place, but then he learns about his alibi's true identity. Besides adding excitement to the novel, this lends credence to how sick and well financed these experiments are.

"The Human Forged" by Anthony J. Melchiorri is a dark and deep psychological science fiction thriller about modern technology and cloning that follows a former US Army Specialist Nick on a misadventure.
Set in 2094 the world has technologically advanced and living 'natural', i.e. without technological enhancement or net connection, seems dangerous, particularly as Nick enters an underground rave in an abandoned Estonian prison with a Costa Rican and a Russian girl he literally just met.
To me the technology part of the story seems only too realistic as applications and technological advances replace natural skills and knowledge these days and the book captures current themes and places them into a fascinating future scenario. Melchiorri does a great job at showing us how this has both, advantages and dangers.
Not surprisingly Nick is abducted at the rave and on his break to freedom and back to civilisation we witness with him and his clone James a lot about cloning and some other ongoing conspiracies.
The book has some well paced action scenes, great inventive ideas about a future society, and it reflects well on the human condition and the dangers of cloning. Almost philosophical at times this is a feast for readers who like more substance to their science fiction stories.
A great read.

The Human Forged is a riveting read from beginning to end, a book which grabs you, shakes you roughly by the shoulders and demands that you pay attention to it. Tension remains high throughout as we follow Nick into the seedy and unscrupulous world of scientific experiments and illegal cloning in a future that, given current affairs and advances in technology, really isn’t difficult to imagine.
Stripped of any tools that could aid him, Nick is forced to make impossible decisions to increase his chances of survival and engineer his escape – a feat which seems to be a fool’s errand, but is preferable to any other option available to him.
The Human Forged is an extremely well crafted tale which originally (I believe) began as a serialisation of shorter works before its current incarnation. The descriptions are vivid, relevant and informative, the emotions incredibly powerful in their execution, with a constant current of fear and distrust running just below the surface.
I love the Science element of the world Melchorri has created – it came as no surprise to learn that he’s a Biomedical Engineer – what better career could a kick-ass SciFi author ask for? But even with all that techy know-how, The Human Forged isn’t just for geeks. If you want a gripping read, you’ve found it here.

I found this book on Reading Deals Review Club - I was provided a free copy so I could give an honest review.
This book has lots of elements to it - Near Future Science Fiction - Special Forces Military - Biotechnology - Political Intrigue - Romance - some may call it Cyberpunk while others may call it Speculative Fiction
The main character, Nick, trusts a new friend who takes him to a rave. Nick is kidnapped and wakes up to discover he is part of a biotechnological experiment. His Special Forces training kicks in and his homeward adventure begins. Follow him to see if everything gets resolved or do worse things happen.
This is the second book I've read of Mr. Melchiorri. The first was Enhancement. Both stories are set in the near future, start out in a prison setting, and deal with biotechnology after that the similarities end. In my humble opinion both are well written. This book combines elements that I enjoy.
If you enjoy biotechnology, military, political intrigue, and science fiction with a touch of romance thrown in for good measure then you should love this book.
If you can't tell I love the book and look forward to reading more by Mr. Melchiorri in the future.

I enjoyed this a lot. It's a pretty easy, light read. At the same time, there are layers that make you think about more than just the action and intrigue. There IS plenty of action in Nick' s storyline, but Sara's perspective gives a wider look at the conspiracy and helps add to the complexity of the story. There are also a couple nice twists/surprises thrown in that keep the momentum going.
Cloning, slavery, genetic engineering, and modern society's dependence on technology are all interesting topics touched upon in this story. The characters feel like real people as they wrestle with these issues. The writing is never preachy or heavy handed, but it's clear where the author is coming from.
I did think the end felt a bit rushed, and I would have liked for the epilogue to be fleshed out a lot more. However, I understand this is part of a series, so hopefully there's a lot more the author is planning to explore.

The beginning of this book was a little slow for me, but once it got to the main part of the story, I was hooked.
When Nick goes to a rave at an abandoned Estonian prison, he has no idea that he is about to be abducted and wake up years later to find out he's been cloned. It then becomes a fight for his life as he tries to find a way to escape back home to his fiancee and get justice for not only his clones, but the other clones he encounters. It really makes you think about the future of science, and what we could be in for if scientists ever reach that point. The science itself is actually well-explained and not just glazed over, showing that the author really does know what he's talking about, which makes the story that much better.
A free copy was provided to me by the author in exchange for an honest review.

If you like Sci-fi stories with lots of scientific detail this may not be the book for you, but if you like the Sci-fi stories just for the sake of the stories you should enjoy this book. This is a fast paced book which grabs and holds your attention by the end of the first chapter. The story is told primarily from the view point of an "Original" and of a CIA employee who gets into something way over her head and clearance level, there were one or two places where the story was being told by one of the clones, and I think I would have liked to see more of the clone view point during the telling of the story. I felt the story ended sort of abruptly, but I realize that this is the first book in a series and for the series to continue it had to end the way it did. Overall this was a very enjoyable read for me.

The Human Forged by Anthony J. Melchiorri may be classified as Sci-fi because it’s set in 2094, but the story is a wonderful combination of mystery, thriller and suspense.
Melchiorri opens strong with a vividly described setting in Estonia. The futuristic concepts and advancements in technology are well researched and believable. They are easy to digest and don’t deflect from the plot’s suspense. Melchiorri’s eye for detail and continuity creates a well-structured novel with excellent pacing that balances the action, suspense and revelations.
My only complaint is that the ending felt rushed. Melchiorri ties together the plotlines with a satisfactory conclusion but some of the final dialogue felt forced, and the “moral lesson” felt didactic.

The Human Forged is a very interesting take on human cloning. Unlike other books I've read where the science is glossed over or simply ignored, Melchiorri actually meets the challenge and I thought he did a great job, giving a sense of realism to the science that made the story even more unnerving.
This is a deep and dark story that doesn't just rely on action to sell itself. Characters are well developed, the settings are established with enough detail without going overboard and the action actually adds to the story rather than distracting the reader. I would have liked a bit more for the ending, but I would guess there's a sequel in the works that may give me the pieces I was wanting. Overall, it was a captivating read.

I don't tend to read science-fiction, but I really enjoyed this book. Although the premise is entertaining, intricate, and engaging, what really sold me was the character-building.
Nick Corrigan is thrust into a dangerous and complicated situation. He's confused and at times scared, but he is determined and refuses to give up. With each revelation, he grows stronger and fights harder. My kind of hero (although he's also flawed and struggling).
Twists and turns abound in this captivating novel. Highly recommend.
Note: I served as a proofreader on this book, but a review was not requested or guaranteed; the opinions expressed are my own.

This was such an amazing read. It had suspense, mystery, and horror. At least I found it frightening to think about being in such a situation. The world Melchoiorri has created is interesting and captivating. Melchoiorri's writing is so amazing that I was transported into his world. We follow the main character, Nick, through his ordeal. This story had me on the edge of my seat and I couldn't put it down. I can't wait to find out where Melchoiorri takes us in his next book.

Thought Provoking!
"The Human Forged" was very interesting. I expected an Estonian type of book and got more of a futuristic book with an Estonian feel. It is almost nerve wracking to see the technological advances of today and reality of what could be. "The Human Forged" gives you something to think about. If you like FBI, CIA government conspiracies/cover up this is a fast pace short read for you. I enjoyed it.

The Human Forged is a futuristic, dark psychological science fiction thriller that delves into the utilization of cloning to create a more superior military force. The world that Melchiorri creates is interesting, captivating, and believable. This fast-paced story sucked me in and I couldn't stop reading; I would have finished reading it in one day, but life interrupted and I had to work and take care of my family.

This was entertaining and well written enough to keep me turning the pages, wanting to know what happens next. Being about human cloning, of course it brings up some interesting points and questions. But ultimately it didn't seem to explore those points or questions beyond a minimum amount. The ending in particular felt incredibly rushed and not of the same quality of storytelling as the rest. Still, worth my time.

A very interesting book. A little on the terrifying side, knowing it's something that could actually happen. If not now I'm sure not too far in the future. It was a great example of determination, strength and perseverance. The human desire for survival. It was definitely a quick and exciting read.

I just finished "The Human Forged" by Anthony J. Melchiorri. Very good read, I really enjoyed reading this story. Very fast paced and it kept my interest all the to the very end. This is the second fastest I have read a book this year and they are both by the same author. Again I enjoyed this book.

This is a really good book. The story line is very believable. It makes me wonder if them things could really happen in the future. If you ever come across this book, pick it up. I promise you wont be able to put it down.

I found this book interesting and hard to put down. characters were very memorable. would have wanted a more exciting ending... slight let down after all the action and build up. but overall very good read

Good read, less sci fi than I expected more of a real life (very near) possibility.
