this was a unique way to include fake dating! fifteen year old kylie has been crushing on the boy next door, lewis for a year and a half, daydreaming about what it would be like if they were together. she doesn't make a move, because she's rlly shy milly rose, are you watching me?? 😃 one day in the cafeteria, lewis and the blonde popular girl, yvette, suddenly kissed! i gasped in horror 🫢 so, lewis' best friend, parker, came up w/ an idea: they fake date and cry to make lewis & yvette break up! and let's just say...some hearts were broken. and miscommunication appeared! 😐

⤿ it's a curse
and it's growing
you're a pond and i'm an ocean
oh, all my emotions
feel like explosions when you are around
and i've found a way to kill the sounds, oh

kylie 💫.𖥔 ݁ ˖
me and kylie are literally the exact person like OMG!! me 🤝 kylie we both have brown hair, daydream about the people we have a crush on, shy, and so on. but, in one scene, she doesn't know how to communicate to parker when she saw his car at yvette's house! i might've ran to his house and asked him what in the world is he doing in her house! as i read this scene, i was frustrated!! 😅

⤿ oh, baby, I am a wreck when I'm without you
i need you here to stay
i broke all my bones that day I found you
crying at the lake
was it something I said to make you feel like you're a burden?
oh, and if I could take it all back
i swear that I would pull you from the tide

parker ✶⋆.˚
he is such a sweet and optimistic guy w/ kylie, that makes me swoon! *dies* he even could her one of his darkest secrets that he didn't even tell friends! 🥹 now, the issue is that when yvette said something horrible about jamie's mom, he defends her! how STUPID!

listen close, it's a no
the wind is a-pounding on my back

Reader’s Notes:

– this is part of a series, but can be read as a stand-alone

– this is told from Kylie’s point of view

– there is 1 or 2 not nice words/names

– it is mentioned that someone passed away in childbirth

Review:

Parker irritated me a bit in the beginning as it was clear that he really had no plan beyond the basic ‘let’s pretend to be dating to make them split.’ But the more I thought about it, the more it made sense that Parker would be flying by the seat of his pants like he did and have no clear ideas as he was so focused on getting Yvette to be interested. Kylie was also joining Parker for the ride of this plan, but she didn’t irritate me as much as she was just trusting that Parker had a plan from the beginning, only to discover that wasn’t really the case. I loved seeing Kylie realize that she truly liked Parker (after getting to know him) and could see that Lewis the person & Lewis the fantasy were two totally different people. I loved that Kylie & Parker’s friendship was the basis of their relationship and that it grew as they actively spent more time together. I loved that though Kylie realized that she fell for Parker, she chose to honor their original agreement and wanted to see him happy. I also really liked that Parker tried getting Kylie to see that his attentions changed, but was also trying to honor their original plan if she clearly didn’t reciprocate.

I kind of wanted Yvette to change to be a better person that could actually reconnect with Tabitha and create new lasting friendships, so I was a little disappointed that we didn’t get that in this story. Though maybe it means that Yvette will change at a later point in the series! So I’m excited to find out if that’s the case.

Summary:

Kylie has fantasized about her neighbor Lewis finally figuring out what she’s known all along: that she’s the one for him. But all her fantasies come crumbling down when she sees that a popular girl, Yvette, has started to dig her claws into Lewis and they are on their way to dating. When Kylie becomes devastated about the change in Lewis’s relationship status, she sees a reflection of it in his best friend Parker’s eyes. And apparently, he saw the same look in hers.

That’s when Parker approaches Kylie with a plan to fix both their problems: they should fake date and talk each other up to the other couple while making an effort to break them up. While Kylie isn’t too keen on actively trying to break a couple up, she can’t deny that the end result is something she highly desires. And Yvette isn’t someone that anyone should endure anyways, so really she’ll be doing Lewis a huge favor. Even if she doesn’t understand what either boy can see in the mean girl…

I absolutely adore Milly Rose’s ‘Shy Girls’. The whole series is amazing and this instalment is no exception.
Parker and Kylie fake date to get their respective crushes to notice them, beyond that point there is no plan as Kylie soon discovers. The teen characters are engaging, fun and realistic.
I mean what teen boy really has his dating plan fully worked out? They’re always flying by the seat of their pants, making it up as they go along. Add to that the girl just goes along with it because she also is just focused on their hopeful outcome. I found it cute, easy to read and so enjoyable.
I loved how their feelings for each developed as they worked so hard to convince everyone they were real.
There’s the required mean girl, lots of teen drama, emotion, humour, sweetness and a wonderful HEA.
Cleverly crafted by a teen romance queen and I am eagerly awaiting the next book.

Thank you to the author.

I love young adult stories. I think it’s that excitement of discovering first love that does it for me.
In Shy Girls Can’t Fake Date, a shy “invisible” high school girl has been crushing on her next door neighbor since he moved in 18 months ago. She imagines how it will be when he finally notices her and they fall in love.
(We all know how that goes. LOL!)
When he shows up to class holding hands with the mean girl, her heartbreak shows on her face. Her classmate and crush’s best friend, Parker notices her devastated expression. Crushing on the mean girl, himself, he devises a plan to break up the new couple by fake dating the shy girl, Ellis and showing his best friend how wonderful she is.
With a plan like that, what could go wrong?
Wonderful characters and hijinks a plenty makes this romantic comedy unputdownable. I’m definitely reading the whole series.

My Review
I received an ARC of this book. Book is out today.
You guys have no idea how much I look forward to when Milly Rose has a new book. I am literally smiling for days with glee. Shy Girls Can't Fake Date is the newest book in her shy girl series but if you've never read any of the books you're in luck each book can be read as a stand alone. Now on to my review.
Fake dating is one of my favorite tropes. I like the dance of the couple as they come together for a goal usually to somehow make people they have a crush on fall in love with them only to instead fall for the one they are fake dating with.
In this case Parker has a crush on Yvette but she has just started dating Lewis. Kylie has a crush on Lewis and is saddened that he has started dating Yvette so she agrees to fake date with Parker with the intention to some how break Yvette and Lewis up so that she and Parker can have a chance to date their crushes.
I found it absolutely hilarious when Parker told Kylie he had a plan and only when she agreed did she find out they were basically winging it.
There's also the fact that none of their friends believe that they're dating at first, truly smile worthy.
Watching Parker and Kylie truly get to know each other as they work to fool everyone and slowly fall in love was a true joy. It was great to see Kylie realize that dream Lewis and real life Lewis was vastly different. Now I'm not saying that Lewis is a bad guy because he isn't. Parker is just the better guy.
I'm seriously wondering when Yvette will stop being such a bitch. It's been several books now and she hasn't changed for the better. Looks like she's on the road to getting worse.
All in all a wonderfully sweet book i.e. another winner in series for Milly Rose.
Until next time, peace and happy reading.

This books releases on February 27, 2024! However, I was blessed with an advanced copy in exchange for a completely honest (and spoiler-free) review! So let’s get right to it!

This is the longest book in the series so far, but I had managed to read this all on Valentine’s Day (copy was given the day before, lol) because of how adorable it was! Genuinely would have crushed on a guy like Parker at that same age.

Shy Girls Can’t Fake Date is exactly what you would expect. And by that, I mean it’s a fake dating, spring break romance. I don’t see a lot of story set specifically during that one week (my spring breaks in high school were 2 btw) of freedom from high school so I was excited to read it, especially because my favorite trope to read about is fake dating/fake engagement/marriage of convenience. Let me tell you: it DID NOT DISAPPOINT! All the shenanigans and kisses, as well as the teenage adventures made you want to be there when it all happened. Or to even have a guy like Parker Kelly to fall in love with. I could easily tell that they were meant to be from the first few chapters.

If you’re also someone who loves imagining scenes as you read about them, then I highly encourage that you pick up this book.

I can’t talk about any more than that because I try to keep my reviews spoiler-free. However, I do write some of my thoughts on a document while I read for the first time so if that interests you, then please let me know if you want the document so we can talk about it!

This cute little number is available for pre-order until it’s release date so go buy it now! After release, it will be available for free on KU and for a price on Amazon (ebook and paperback)!

This was a really cute and fun story. I enjoyed it. I did find that I had to keep in mind that the characters are teenagers and not look at it all through an adult lens. When their respective crushes began dating each other, Kylie and Parker wanted to break them up. “‘Kylie and I are on the same page.’ ‘I know…and the page is toxic.’” They formulated a plan to fake date themselves and try to get their crushes to recognize that they were better partners for them. “Somehow, Yvette has trapped him under her spell. But he’s better than this. He’s better than her. He can break free of her black magic and finally see clearly.” The story was told from Kylie’s POV, and it took her time to recognize the sweet things Parker did and said. Especially since he stubbornly clung to the purpose of the ruse. “…so many things were perfect…it was just the wrong guy.” The characters were engaging and the story was entertaining. I had to remind myself that it really occurred over a fairly short period of time because it felt like so much happened. It was fun to see characters from previous stories again. An odd little nitpick: It did feel like “retch” was used excessively. This book is part of a series and there is carryover from previous books, but it reads well as a standalone. This is a sweet and clean story with very brief mild harsh language. (One instance, I believe.)

My thoughts on this book are a bit ambiguous. At first, I was cringing through the first three chapters because of how Kylie was talking about her crush on Lewis. I just didn’t think it was anything substantial. Plus, her daydreaming was so over the top—it was very obvious she put Lewis on a pedestal, and I just wasn’t rooting for her.

Then we had Parker, who only wanted to be with Yvette because she’s the most popular girl in school. So there’s that. After all this time, and after pretending to fake date, they fall for each other and are clearly aware that they like their fake partner. But instead of telling them or calling it off, they double down on trying to get with their original crushes—aka Yvette and Lewis. That was the dumbest thing I’ve ever seen in my life. ( can you sense my frustration?)

Also, Parker just letting Yvette talk to his friends like that—insulting Jamie and her mother—and still defending Yvette really pissed me off.

Then I realized how young they really were. Yes, we were told they were in high school, but when they said they were 15, everything made sense.

I also did not like how Parker kind of broke up with her and humiliated her in front of the group. I was livid.

But that’s over now.

Overall, I’m probably not going to read anything else from this book series. The characters are just too immature for me to enjoy.

Pros: clean in sense that it’s only kissing. Parker is an idiot at times but at least he’s a cute kind of sweet idiot. Kylie tries a lot of new things and she makes friends. Her best friend Josie is the most reasonable one of all of them.

Content warning:
Only a couple curse words that I remember
Some mentions of slut, skimpy bikini, and shirtless ness. Some extreme things like cliff jumping. Unkind siblings and secrets in families. Girl bullies.

Cons:
So far it’s this really crazy 4some that doesn’t make sense and I can’t figure out why everyone wants Yvie. Yet I continue reading. The storyline doesn’t change and I’m on page 192.
The ending is cute and everybody eventually figures things out, and Yvette gets what she deserves. It is still ridiculous. How everyone leads everyone on and likes each other. It’s just weird to me like pick a person and stay with them and then I didn’t realize they were 15 that was a whole lot of kissing for 15-year-olds but oh well. How did Yvette have so many boyfriends and why would that many guys want to date her? I am not all about this rebound situation either.
They are both dumb for not telling the truth that they wanted to be together sooner, but it literally was only a week and they were like weeping.

I volunteered to read this ARC for an honest review. I really have enjoyed these stories. This book is about Parker and Kylie. They both have crushes that are secret, or so they think. But it's not with each other. Kylie likes Lewis, Parker's bff. Parker wants to get Yvette's attention, but she's dating Lewis at the moment. Parker hatches a plan to make Lewis notice Kylie and break up with Yvette, only for him to fix her broken heart. What Kylie and Parker never planned on was a friendship to develop into something more for them. Great laughs and fun.

This is definitely a sweet first love romance with all the high school drama rolled in. Kylie and Parker learn what’s important and how relationships are built on communication and trust. Do I think high school students experience some of the “drama” Kylie and Parker did-absolutely. It was an enjoyable story when reading it through the eyes of a young teen.

fake dating … or was it?

Interesting take on a fake dating trope where both people are trying to get their own crushes (who are dating each other) it was a little bit cringey in places but then i remembered that’s what teenagers are like…. In the end I enjoyed it so much I gave it a 4 star!
