First, don't be put off by the abysmal picture on the cover; it really does the story a disservice.  It took me weeks to read this; I just really didn't want to spend time with this story after looking at this putrid picture.  The truth is: This is an original story; I never knew what was coming next. I read it literally nonstop because I couldn't wait to see what would happen.

Libby Summerfield is a very pregnant widow, trying to get to Nevada City, so she can have her baby with a doctor in attendance.  However, her driver leaves her a mile outside of Deadman's Gulch and tells her he wasn't going any closer to the stagecoach station because he was nearly killed last time he entered Deadman's Gulch.  With a valise, Libbie walks the mile, falling in a shallow river, and nearly freezing to death.

Logan St. John finds Libby and saves her life.  After she recovers, her goal is to get to Nevada City and then home to Boston.  However, fate gets in the way and Libby has her baby in Deadman's Gulch.  Before long, Libby has converted the uncouth miners into choirboys and cabin-builders.

I've become a fan of Margaret Brownley because of the great short stories I've read recently (see below for the list).  In this book, the dialogue sparkles between Logan and Libby, while the humor is rampant.  This book is absolutely charming.  Enjoy. Overall score: 4.5 stars

Rawhide and Lace by Margaret Brownley

I liked this story. It was a sweet and easy read.

The description of the book I am listing below is from the back jacket of the book. I'm adding it because I believe the one on the Goodreads page does not depict this story.

THEY WERE FROM OPPOSITE WORLDS...
Libby Summerfield couldn't wait to get out of Deadman's Gulch--a lawless mining town filled with gunfights, brawls, and uncivilized, mountain men—men like Logan St. John. Stranded there with a new baby, the pretty widow would have to make the best of it. But she vowed to return to the refinement of Boston a soon as the stage resumed its run...and her heart stopped quickening at the thought of Logan's gentle touch.

...AND IN AN IMPOSSIBLE SITUATION
Logan St. John knew his town was no place for a woman—especially one who disrupted his card game, cleaned his buckskins, and turned a group of tough, hard-drinking miners into a bunch of fawning choirboys. The sooner she and her precious baby left for Boston, the better. But how could he stand to lose this spirited woman who tamed this wild western town—and melted his heart of stone forever?
