Get Lucky

Rate this book
How do you change your luck? Katherine Center’s marvelously entertaining and poignant new novel is about choosing to look for happiness—and maybe getting lucky enough to find it.

Sarah Harper isn’t sure if the stupid decisions she sometimes makes are good choices in disguise—or if they’re really just stupid. But either way, after forwarding an inappropriate email to her entire company, she suddenly finds herself out of a job.

So she goes home to Houston—and her sister, Mackie—for Thanksgiving. But before Sarah can share her troubles with her sister, she learns that Mackie has some woes of her own: After years of trying, Mackie’s given up on having a baby—and plans to sell on eBay the entire nursery she’s set up. Which gives Sarah a brilliant idea—an idea that could fix everyone’s problems. An idea that gives Sarah the chance to take care of her big sister for once—instead of the other way around.

But nothing worthwhile is ever easy. After a decade away, Sarah is forced to confront one ghost from her past after another: the father she’s lost touch with, the memories of her mother, the sweet guy she dumped horribly in high school. Soon everything that matters is on the line—and Sarah can only hope that by changing her life she has changed her luck, too.

Katherine writes laugh-and-cry books: bittersweet romantic comedies about how life knocks us down—and how we get back up. She’s been compared to both Jane Austen and Nora Ephron, and the Dallas Morning News calls her stories, “satisfying in the most soul-nourishing way.” The Netflix movie adaptation of her novel Happiness for Beginners—starring Ellie Kemper and Luke Grimes—just hit the Global Top Ten in 81 countries, and the movie of her novel The Lost Husband was a surprise Netflix sensation in 2020, hitting number one and landing in their top 25 movies for the year. Her books have made countless Best-Of lists—at Audible, BookBub, and Book of the Month, as well as Goodreads' Best Books of the Year, and Amazon's yearly Top 100 books. Emily Henry calls The Bodyguard “my perfect 10 of a book,” and Jodi Picoult says of Things You Save in a Fire, “Just read it, and thank me later.” Katherine lives in her hometown of Houston, Texas, with her husband, two almost-grown teenagers, and their fluffy-but-fierce dog.

Oh NO She Didn’t!!

If you work in a professional setting, you’ve had this nightmare: You Accidentally hit send on an email addressed to ALL, as in EVERYONE in your company and the email is wholly INAPPROPRIATE.

Yep, that’s exactly what happened to Sarah the main character in “Get Lucky”, and as you could guess, she was terminated. Before this, Sarah was the “It” girl at her Advertising Agency in New York and she was on her way to the top. Now she’s hightailing it back to her hometown in Houston with her tail between her legs.

Mackie, Sarah’s sister has her own problems. Unable to conceive, Mackie is close to giving up entirely, when Sarah comes to the rescue with the bright idea of being her sister’s surrogate. It sounds as easy as pie doesn’t it?

After reading “Things You Save in a Fire,” “How to Walk Away,” and then “The Lost Husband,” Katherine Center became one of my favorite authors. After “Things You Save in a Fire” I knew I wanted to go and read every single one of Ms. Center’s prior novels and I am now doing exactly that.

“Get Lucky” drew me in immediately, I mean how could it not? It is eye popping and extremely funny to boot and the characters are as real as can be. I adored the character of Sarah and felt like I was her (though thankfully I have never been in her shoes!). What I love about Katherine Center’s novels is how invested you become and how realistic and they are. These are moments that happen in everyday life and they are written to perfection.

Thank you to my local library for a copy of this novel to read and review.

4.5 stars. I’ve only read one other book by Kathrine Center, and it was very different, but I really enjoyed both. This one had a fair amount of humor in it. It’s about two sisters. One is happily married but can’t stay pregnant. The other is successful at her job in New York until she accidently sends an email company-wide that she shouldn’t have. Sarah goes back to Houston and stays with her married sister.

I really enjoyed how well Center wrote about the complexities of relationships in general and about sisters in particular. This is a fun read.

I loved this book. I found out about it years ago on Brené Brown's website in the "Reading recommendations" section (now it's called "The Library").

At the center of Get Lucky is a relationship between Sarah, the main character, and her sister and best friend Mackie.

For a long time Mackie tried to have a baby with her husband Clive, but for health reasons sustaining any of the pregnancies turned out to be impossible. When Sarah gets fired from the job that was her whole life, she needs a time of stillness and quiet to recuperate and figure out what to do next. She offers to be the surrogate mother to Mackie and Clive's embryo. The novel follows the events from when the idea first occurs to Sarah through to months after the birth when she is recovered and once again free to chose her own path forward.

What I liked:

- family relationships. This book revolves around a family - two sisters, their dad, the grief for their late mother, the emerging relationship with the new step-mom, a husband and new babies. It's a functioning and affectionate family, but it's also a real one - with its fair share of bumps and tensions and issues to get through.

- it was fun and funny. I laughed out loud and giggled and thoroughly enjoyed every page.

- it all felt real. The thing about Center's book is that it reads like LIFE. It's messy and imperfect and compelling. The way she writes about marriage, motherhood, work, family... It's not the "everything is amazing and magical all the time" bullshit, nor is it "everything is unbearably hard and only brings suffering with no rewards" outlook. You really get the feeling that stuff is a struggle, but it's interesting too.

- I really cared about the characters and everything that happened to them. Ya know, THE FEELS. I liked the heroine, all the side-characters, the romantic interest was a gem. This is chick lit at its finest. It's not about romance (though there is some of that too), it's about a solidly written MC who does stuff, makes mistakes, changes, figures stuff out. She's neither pining nor navel-gazing, nor has life's gifts just piling on her lap for no reason.

This is my kind of chick-lit.

I've previously read another book by this author - Everyone Is Beautiful and really liked it as well. So I guess Katherine Center is just ma guurl.

Get Lucky

Katherine Center

GET LUCKY by Katherine Center is the story of Sarah Harper, a workaholic advertising executive in New York City. When she sends out an inappropriate company-wide e-mail and is fired from her job, she doesn’t know where to go or what to do. She decides to travel home to Texas to visit her sister and best friend Mackie. When she arrives home, she finds that Mackie’s life is not as perfect as it looks; all Mackie wants is a baby and she and her husband are struggling to conceive. Sarah swoops in and makes a seemingly ridiculous but generous offer. She offers to be a surrogate for Mackie and her husband Clive. Sarah is excited; it seems like the perfect arrangement and certainly one that will bring she and her sister closer. Both Sarah and Mackie are surprised when the pregnancy completely turns their lives- and their relationships upside down.

First of all, look at this cover? Doesn’t it just scream summer? As we all know that I’m one to judge a book by its cover, I was immediately drawn to this one. I really loved GET LUCKY. I got completely lost in Sarah’s world. She was a wonderful protagonist and I loved hearing her story, told in her own voice. Other minor characters (especially Sarah’s father’s new girlfriend) play a special role in the story and truly make the story more wonderful. GET LUCKY takes a few different interesting turns. It’s not strictly about the pregnancy; there are several mini-plots that keep the story exciting.

Katherine Center really knows how to write about family drama, heartbreak, and forgiveness. I can not wait to read more by this wonderful and heart tugging author. I have many of her older books to read and that makes me so happy. GET LUCKY is all about letting go of the past and learning how to move on. It is filled with likable and relatable characters that will find their way into the readers heart. If you are looking for a book about a less than perfect family, GET LUCKY is the story for you. Spend the afternoon on your beach chair or on your couch devouring this beautiful story. You will love every minute of it!

Sometimes you have to be brave for the people you love.

I love Katherine Center’s writing, and although this wasn’t my favorite book of hers, I still liked it. It was a book about sisters, family, friendships, and had a little bit of romance in it. I thought the surrogacy part of the book was interesting and even though it was a bit messy throughout, it all came together by the end.

Sorta kinda between 3 and 3.5-ish stars(?)

Katherine Center is one of my favorite authors. Her newer books especially never, ever fail to bring me joy and put me in a good mood. The older books aren't as good but usually they're still exceptional comfort reads full of relatable characters/writing and interesting plots.

"Get Lucky" was no exception to (most of) this rule. It was a fun book with tons of that relatability factor. But the plot of this novel, for me, was way too sporadic and all over the place. I completely lost sight of what the main storyline even was, to be honest. The protagonist and MC, Sarah Harper, flipped her life on its head and took me along on a chaotic journey that felt mostly exactly like that; chaos.

The first third of this book ended up being my favorite part. I loved the relationship Sarah had with her sister, Mackie. I really enjoyed their enthusiasm for THE PLAN that they concocted. They had fantastic dialogue and a very good dynamic. And then that just completely disappeared. And them drifting apart was supposed to be some of the point, I think, but it almost came across as an afterthought that Mackie just hadn't been mentioned for a really long time.

Sarah also falls into a lot of subplots with characters that pop up and then disappear into the abyss, never to be seen or mentioned again. Some of those subplots felt entirely pointless and I just mostly missed Sarah and Mackie together.

I also had anticipated that the romance aspect of this book would be more at the forefront. Also seemed to be very much an afterthought. And I don't feel that Sarah's love interest got justice. They had a complicated past that Sarah was responsible for and she doesn't really ever take accountability for it other than in a "wrap it up"-esque way at the very end.

Overall, I was disappointed that I was a little disappointed by this one. There was plenty to love in the beginning and a lot to like by the end, but it was simultaneously a bit flat and a bit too all over the place for my taste.

This was the first book by Center that I've read. While I did enjoy the book, there were a couple of things that irritated me.

One thing was the over use of info that was not relevant to the story. There were plenty of times that I skipped over two, three or even four paragraphs of useless, boring info, only to find out that I didn't really miss anything.

The other thing was that the story went back and forth in time way too often. For some books, it works but not for this one. The main character could be talking about getting a new job and then all of a sudden, she jumps into the future saying "in a week this is going to happen" or she'll suddenly jump back in time.

Other than those two problems, I enjoyed this book. I liked the premise of it (although I would have liked more STORY and less useless info). I think it's a great idea as a whole but could use a little more tweaking, maybe a little more dialogue with some of the other characters and less seeing inside of Sarah's head.

Get Lucky is my fourth Katherine Center book and I am a fan of this author! She has a way of pulling you into the story. This one is a little more serious with themes of friendship, sisterhood, and family but still has some funny moments. I would definitely recommend this book if you like this genre.

It was the story I needed now and I was totally absorbed throughout reading. The only criticism I have is that it was too short and I finished it too quickly...!

Love, love, love this author. Get Lucky was another fabulous women's fic novel with just enough romance, wit, and character transformation to keep me turning pages. I loved the main protagonist. I saw a little of my impulsiveness and irrationality in Sarah and could laugh at myself through her antics. I've honestly never been disappointed with a Katherine Center story.

A story about sisters Sarah and Mackie Harper, "Get Lucky" reveals the differences and the similarities that bind the two, even when they're living totally separate lives—with Sarah in New York and Mackie back home in Houston, Texas, with husband Clive.

Then one day, in the midst of an advertising campaign that would, most likely, move Sarah up the ladder of success, she does something so daring (and inappropriate) that she ends up jobless and on a flight home to Texas.

As if to add to her humiliation, Sarah is shoved up into a small seat on the plane next to the guy she dumped in high school...Everett Thompson. And from his attitude, he hasn't forgotten or forgiven.

Holed up in Mackie's gorgeous home, she thinks about cocooning there for awhile. And then, hearing about Mackie's unsuccessful attempts to carry a child, she offers up her "womb." Outrageous as this sounds, the two find themselves immersed in the fantasy of it. They also check out the realities and find it is possible. Surprisingly, husband Clive is on board. The baby would be created with Clive's sperm and Mackie's egg—Sarah would just be the gestational carrier.

Just as she launches this project for her sister, Sarah discovers that Everett works for Clive, and obviously, she'll be seeing a lot of him over the next few months.

I enjoyed this story so much that I was laughing all the way through, except for the parts that reminded me of feelings of rejection and envy and loss. Those feelings connected me to the characters so deeply that I wanted to learn more about them—even after the last page.

What these characters brought to my life was how real they felt, and how, despite the somewhat unusual circumstances of the story, they could have been people I knew.

This tale, like every other Katherine Center novel I've read, earned five big stars from me.

This is my first Katherine Center book and I have to say I'm not impressed. I felt this book had a lot of potential, but fell short in so many ways. I was bored with all the useless information of Sarah thinking to herself and the severe lack of dialogue between characters. There was hardly any interaction between Sarah and her love interest it was mostly her obsessing over how much she either hated him or was crushing on him. Also, the plot would skip back and forth between present and what would happen in the future which was annoying. This story was not funny to me at all and I'm surprised at how many people said it was "hilarious". It had the potential, but when the moment came it would lack detail and dialogue. Overall I wanted to like this book, but just couldn't!! If I come across a Katherine Center book again I will probably pass on it!

Fabulous! This Author is quickly becoming a favorite! I LOVED these two sisters; what a great story! Everett - *sigh*, bless his heart. I love him!
I looked up reviews for this after I finished and there are hardly any! Blasphemous, I say! This book is great and should be devoured like all her others.
They're are too pricey, but I really enjoy her writing! Highly recommend this one!

Get Lucky was published 12 years ago. It's been a while since I've read a book written that long ago.

I really enjoyed this book because the subject matter was complex. The book didn't shy away from how messy feelings can be while handling this situation.

Sarah is recently fired and feeling like she needs a life change. She offers to be a surrogate for her sister and brother-in-law who have been struggling to get pregnant for the last decade.

Being your sister's surrogant seems like it would be a feel-good situation but that's not how it all pans out. It's not all rainbows and butterflies. I appreciate how the book makes the reader consider things within surrogacy that someone who has experienced it might not have consider before.

A stand out character in the story was Dixie. She's Sarah's widower dad's soon to be wife. Her character really added a dimension that showed how how women can be cruel to another woman when they feel threatened by her looks and personality. Dixie's sparkle shined through the pages.

GET LUCKY
● Sarah (30)
● fired for sending an inappropriate email to everyone at work
● surrogate for her sister, Mackie
● women’s fiction

I’m back a few hours later after processing and I’m taking back a star. The MC just wasn’t that likeable in my eyes and the whole book could easily have existed without the love interest- I really don’t feel like he added any value at all. I loved the addition of Dixie’s character and liked the exploration of the relationships both between Dixie as the new wife and Sarah/Mackie as sisters. That being said- I hated Bobbi’s character and the way she was written. I realize she was supposed to be a villain, but nothing gets my goat more than character’s whose only purpose is to be the cardboard version antithesis to the MC. Sarah literally described Bobbi as the kind of girl that men love but women hate. And then proceeded to feed into that narrative. It’s pretty clear that this is one of Katherine Center’s earlier books, because I can definitely see the growth in her later books, especially when it comes to writing complex side characters. All in all, this book just fell a little flat for me, especially when put up side by side with her other works.

3 stars. I’ve been working my way through Katherine Center books and although this one was a cute, quick read, it just didn’t hit the same as some of her other books

The first half of this book was nearing a 5 star and then we just got distracted and meandering and a little obnoxious. In the first half, we see our main character Sarah lose her job and move in with her sister and her husband. Sarah offers to be a surrogate as her sister keeps having miscarriages. This was so interesting. However, as the pregnancy goes on, we lose focus big time. One of Sarah's exes (that she broke up with in high school) comes back into the picture and I felt nothing for that. It needed to not be there, in my opinion. Furthermore, when the babies are born we are TOLD a little bit about the mixed emotions Sarah has after carrying babies who aren't hers, but we never got to see the bonding throughout the pregnancy and I didn't feel the emotions with her at all. We get very little dialogue in this book and a whole lot of inner monologue and I didn't love it. Timeline jumps around and it feels very all over the place and unfocused, especially given that Sarah is not the best character. This was not a favorite, but I will continue to read every Katherine Center!

This was not one of my favorite ones and feels like an earlier novel of hers. I liked the plot of the sisters and their relationship. What I didn’t like was the style she wrote it where she was constantly telling us what was going to happen before it happened… setting us up for how to feel and what to think of the plots before letting us experience them ourselves… it was interesting and took me out of the story.
Great to see how far she has come has a writer.

The thing I loved most about this book was that it was messy—-complicated relationships, missteps and misunderstandings and mistakes happening all over the place—but it was also hopeful and loving. The characters in this book felt like friends, felt like family, foibles and all! The story was moving and uplifting, funny as hell in parts, poignant and touching—a lot like real life!

I’m always up for a Katherine Center book because they are fun and make the reader feel good. I started with her newer work and am now working my way through her early writings. GET LUCKY is a story an ordinary family - two sisters and their dad, who are dealing with grief from the death of the mother. The narrative moves quickly, from meeting Dad’s new girlfriend, to a surrogate birth mother, along with husbands, boyfriends, exes, and baby twins, … all in 272 pages. Romance is there, of course, but this is solid family drama.

This author’s books never fail to hook me at the start because she’s a genius at narrating true family life. It makes me wonder if she has taken a peek inside my home, because her stories of relationships, heartbreak, and forgiveness, are so real. Throughout the book, the reader feels the struggle, because life is often tough. But that makes it interesting, too. I enjoyed every page, especially the writing. It’s quick and clear, but most of all, it feels like real life, because it IS life—messy, imperfect, so much like mine.

This is a new to me author but I liked her writing and she wasn't repetitive at all. So many of the romance books fall into trying to fill pages with lots of fluff and repetition and this author didn't do that. She approached a problem and moved on. She had an encounter with someone and didn't dwell on everything she could have done or said or did do. I love when a book and author move in this direction with a book. No fluff just a well written book and a fun story line and no insta love. In fact I wasn't sure we were going to have a romance at first.

Do you ever pick up a book and find that you are surprised by how much you liked it? You aren't really sure why, maybe it is your mood, maybe you connect to the story or the characters, but there is just something about it. This is what happened to me with this book.

It is always funny how there are times when you hit the send button on a e-mail and you know you shouldn't have sent it. For Sarah that one little action cost her, her job and sent her home to Texas to lick her wounds. On her way home she ends up seated on a plane next to her old high school boyfriend, who she treated badly when they broke up.

I love how lost she felt after loosing her job. As it has happened to me, I get how you start to make all of these decisions at the time that seem rational at the time, but aren't. I once cooked a whole turkey, not that that in any way compares to being a carrying your sister and brother-in-law's baby.

You can just tell that Sarah's life has taken a big turn and there are bound to be so very many issues ahead. As Sarah navigates all of these life changes, her raging hormones, her life becomes a roller coaster. And this is where the story becomes so funny. I found myself giggling as the land mine's started to explode right on time.

This covers sisterhood, relationship with old and new boyfriends, helping others struggling as well as surrogate motherhood. It is not my fave of Katherine Centers writing but it is up there. It is a well developed story with many well developed characters as well as a strong female and good moral, typical or her writings.

Sarah‘s life and career implodes in New York City so she returns to her hometown of Houston to regroup. There she stays with her sister Mackie and her husband Clive who’ve been trying unsuccessfully to have a baby. Sarah offers to be a gestational carrier for them, since Mackie can’t sustain a pregnancy and Sarah feels she needs some purpose to her life. It seems like a great idea, until Sarah‘s pregnancy impacts her close relationship with her sister who is now trying to control every aspect of Sarah‘s life. She also has to deal with her father with whom she has not been close since her mother died 10 years earlier, and a high school boyfriend who she treated badly but who has also returned to Houston and is annoyingly gorgeous.

Sarah is impulsive, funny and a bit snarky. Mackie is somewhat self-absorbed and very controlling. It is very fitting that she is a professional organizer. Clive is good natured but oblivious.

There are a lot of plots and sub plots in the story. At one point some people from Sarah‘s life in New York City come to Houston to further complicate her life. But there is a lot of heart in this story and some very poignant moments. There are some predictable elements to the story but there are also some twists. The romance aspect of the story is a bit flat as it is never really fully developed along the way. I like that the ending is as imperfect as life generally is, but that everyone finds their own form of luck.

There were things I liked and didn't like about this one. Overall, I enjoyed this one and always am glad to read a book by Katherine. Although this one was different and addressed a matter I'd not read about before, I felt there was a tiny something missing. I did like the creativity in this book and scenes. It'sw a good read it you are wanting something unique and easy.
