Life is good for Dashiell Dawson Dane (just Dash). Things with his boyfriend, Bobby, are better than ever. Teaching at a local college has provided routine and stability. And to his complete surprise, his self-published novel is doing well. Really well. So, when a mystery writers’ conference comes to Hastings Rock, Dash is thrilled to attend.
He’s less thrilled when Vivienne Carver, his former nemesis—the woman who framed him for murder and then tried to kill him—appears at the conference, released from prison and determined to reclaim both fame and fortune. And, as usual, Vivienne has a plan.
But when Vivienne is murdered the first night of the conference, and Dash is—once again—the prime suspect, he’ll have to find the real killer to prove his innocence.
Even worse, Dash might be right back where he started.
I'm a long-time Midwesterner. I've lived in Chicago, Bloomington (IN), and Saint Louis, my current home. Aside from reading and writing (which take up a lot of my time), I'm an educator.
While I enjoy reading across many genres, my two main loves are mystery and speculative fiction. I used to keep a list of favorite books, but it changes so frequently that I've given up. I'm always looking for recommendations, though, so please drop me a line if you have something in mind!
My big goal right now is one day to be responsible enough to get a dog.
My favorite scene was Dash and Vivienne's final meeting, even though she was not really there. Think of that what you will. It was a nice send-off to a character who played such a key role in dash's life at Hastings Rock that it was fitting for her words to resonate so deeply and keenly with. Who else better to offer pearls of wisdom of what it means to be a writer?
“The beauty of writing —the beauty of art—is that it lets us be more human.”
And that is very much what the last picks' final installment is about. the dos or dies of the publishing industry, the toils and troubles it inflicts upon writers, the haves and have nots of being more ambitious in your pursuit to the top. ✍️ From his three ducklings to various agents to even Bobby's understanding but enthusiastic spiel, everyone played a little part in helping Dash realize what it meant to him to be a mystery writer.
I was not a fan of the mystery itself. I'm not fond of finding oddities in old cases, because building up facts from past events creates an imbalance in my head of trying to figure it out myself. In typical Dash fashion, he did get his slight moment in the spotlight, till the culprit stole his thunder yet again, but I couldn't make heads or tails of how he worked it out. 💭 There was not enough concrete evidence to even suggest anything incriminating against the relevant suspects, so...
After a dozen books, it's not fair to complain about the comedy routine Dash has with the rest of the cast. Sometimes it feels real, sometimes it's pushing the limit - never quite an in-between skit that feels fresh. 🤷🏻♀️ I kept waiting for some characters to strike a nerve or amount to something, but were simply there to ruffle Dash's emotional feathers. Some scenes stirred the heart, like Keme's spat with Dash and what transpired after. That was intense, and oh, loved the beautiful quotes included about books - just reached down into my heart of why I love to read.
“... if you ever find someone who makes you feel treasured and safe and beautiful and, uh, ready to go, then yeah, you should probably hang on to them.”
Bobby and Dash's relationship hits a milestone, tempered with some sweet wholesome endearments that I'm glad Dash has someone like Bobby in his corner. But, call me the Grinch of couples, the segue into that next stage felt really staged. Not that it should not be addressed, but how it went about felt forced. I have zero experience with anything like this, so maybe it is real enough, but I hate that I rolled my eyes at it, because my mind says no, it does happen like this, but... I don't know. Every complaint about them is a me thing, methinks. 😞
The final moment was touching and poignant. Gregory Ashe beautifully summed up how dash has made a life and a home where his heart is. His less than stellar moments, the challenges and struggles, the growth and accomplishments all which panned out throughout the series. The irony being that dash is approached for a TV series of his own, but this last chapter felt like the final shot of a tv series. 🎬 The flashbacks, the memories, the longing, the swell of the background music echoing as Dash recalls how much he's changed for the better.
Retool was an homage to a little bit of everything that defined this series. I may have had a topsy-turvy relationship with Dash's personality and mysteries throughout, but it still felt bittersweet to bid a farewell to my time spent with it. Until the side stories release, that is. 😄
Well, here we are at the end of Gregory Ashe's twelve-book foray into cozy murder mystery; it’s been fun, though not even GA can convert me to cozy as a genre. A couple of the less successful installments dragged out the Bobby/Dash miscommunications and self-doubts well past enjoyable readerly frustration, but fortunately we’ve arrived at a point where, although Issues continue to arise, both men get it together to open their mouths and talk before the end of the book. A good thing for the last of a series.
The last of the series, and full circle back to the first, with the — brief! — reappearance of Vivienne Carver, the mystery-writing multiple murderer, implausibly (but who cares about that?) pardoned and, inevitably, turning up at the same writing conference as Dash. Vivienne gets killed for real this time, providing the opener of “Retool”’s mystery plot, and also making Dash’s book, “A Work in Progress,” even more appealing to the TV scout who hopes to sign him to a contract. Aw, poor Bobby, striving to facilitate his own broken heart by finding Dash an apartment in LA, telling himself it’s not such a long flight and they can see each other on weekends. (Don’t worry, Bobby! Unlike in GA’s other series, everything will be okay in the end.)
I snagged pleasantly on any number of GA’s little jokes — a publishing house called Doorstopper; Dash’s father’s fictional detective, Talon Maverick; “Obnoxia, the Roman goddess of everyone leave me alone.” And so on. I’ll always prefer this writer’s humor when it’s leavening for his darker, richer stories, but I can’t begrudge the fans of cozy mysteries their enjoyment, nor can I begrudge Ashe the fun he obviously had writing this series.
Thanks to the author for the ARC; this is my honest opinion, etc.
feel kinda bad being like, yay, we survived the cozies, but: yay, we survived the cozies!
this was back to the beginning, with vivienne (let's ignore the implausible pardon) on the scene again, and even a couple of hugo references. by the sliding scale of cozydom, the mystery was pretty solid; but the main point was, of course, to leave us with dash, bobby, and the last picks in a good place, and in that respect, it was mission accomplished. (although honestly, the last picks hardly figured in this one; but bobby and dash are solid.)
for reals, though: i hate being one of those readers heaving passive-aggressive sighs as a favorite author churns their way through a series that said author seems to have enjoyed writing, probably because it's so different from their other stuff. otoh, i am so fucking relieved that we're going back to Tean and Jem soon. give us lots of fucking, lots of swearing (jem-only), and some sweet, sweet head trauma, greg!!!!
I got an ARC from the author, disclaimer disclaimer
Block December 22 for The Last Picks grand finale!
GA churning out these books with such swiftness, the end’s ready to hit us at peak velocity in a full circle event bound to wrap this arc of the series up with a beautiful and ornate bow. Will Dash finally be uninterrupted in his crime breakdown soliloquy? How many more public horrors will he have to endure in this installment? What other mouthwatering delicacies will Indira be bringing to life? I’m buzzing to find out!
Retool is the 12th and final book in Gregory Ashe’s fabulous cozy mystery Last Picks series. I’ll admit picking this one up was bittersweet, as I was so eager to see how things wrap up for Dash and the gang, but also so sad for this to be the end of the series. I just love the approach Ashe takes here, bringing things full circle for Dash in many ways, but also highlighting how far he has come.
I have really loved this series and am sad to say goodbye to this group of characters. Ashe may be known for his darker, more intense mystery stories, but I have really loved these lighter cozies so much.
The final book in Gregory Ashe’s 12 book cozy mystery series feels like exactly the right way to say goodbye.
Ending the series with a mystery that circles back to the very same person who started it all was incredibly satisfying, it gave the whole journey a sense of symmetry and closure that felt earned rather than forced.
Over the course of the series, we’ve gotten to know a cast of lovable characters, and this last installment is a reminder of why spending time with them has been such a pleasure. Watching Dash slowly find his place in the world has been one of the most rewarding arcs of the series. His growth feels natural, hard won, and deeply human, which is something Gregory Ashe consistently does so well.
Although Greg isn’t typically known for cozy mysteries( and I genuinely enjoy the grittier, darker edges of his usual work) this series was a welcome change of pace. Even with the “cozy” label, it never shied away from heavier topics, giving the story emotional weight without losing its warmth or charm. That balance is not easy to strike, but it’s handled thoughtfully here.
As much as I’ll miss these characters, this finale makes it clear that their story has reached its natural end. It feels like the right time to let them go and I look forward to turning my attention to Greg’s next piece of work.
If this series proves anything, it’s that he can thrive in any genre while still telling stories that resonate.
A great end to a fun series. Every thread sorted, and the meta-story absolutely delightful. Going to miss these characters; they were funny at times when a light distraction (and not so light) was valued.
Dash is finding new success as an author, but learning that with more attention there's more complications. Throw into the mix a surprising face from his past, and Dash is once again caught up in murder, secrets, and lies as he tries to untangle mysteries past and present.
The theme in the story was kind of an extension of the last book. Instead of struggling with becoming a more legitimate, published author, Dash has now found small success with his book which quickly leads to once in a lifetime opportunities. But he's also lost some of his inspiration and enthusiasm for writing and creating. I won't lie, there were a few moments where Dash was frustrating me but at the same time I get he's going through a lot and, historically, he's not great at coping. It doesn't give him an excuse to let the people in his life down, which he quickly realizes and rectifies. While character growth is never linear, Dash has changed so much for the better. He recognizes when he makes a mistake and instead of panicking he's able to own up to it and be vulnerable. Where before he would run away, he now takes the time to be brave and face his future head on.
Dash and Bobby together have come such a long way. From their fumbling beginnings and keeping their feelings locked in, to now communicating what they want and need. They are both so willing to be better for the other, to push themselves out of their comfort zones, and it culminates in a perfect moment for them both. I love their love, and I know while their future isn't always going to be smooth sailing, they will always find a way to be there for one another through thick and thin.
The case had me hooked from the beginning. It was so fast paced and I flew through the story to figure out how it was going to go. I didn't foresee Vivienne coming back to what happened to her, it was a surprisingly perfect way to bookend the series. I loved how looking back over Vivienne's life and with everything we know about her from previous cases helped Dash reevaluate his situation, his passion for writing, and what he truly wanted out of his life and career. He needed that bit of guidance, and for all her murderous faults she was able to give him this much needed perspective.
This book had it all and was such a classic Ashe mystery and cozy (noir) read. The mystery was really intriguing, it reflected perfectly on Dash and his personal problems, and the angst was just enough without hurting my feelings (my favorite kind). I laughed, I cried a little, and am just completely satisfied. Dash is one of the most relatable characters I've read, I've always seen a bit of myself in him (good and bad), and it's been lovely to watch his character growth. The Last Picks were supporting stars as usual, there for Dash every step of the way. I absolutely enjoyed this entire series, it's definitely one I'll be revisiting when I need a low stakes mystery and romance. I can't believe our time in Hastings Rock and with The Last Picks is over, but I'm hoping we get more of them in the future!
TL;DR: a perfect ending to the series, fast paced with a intriguing mystery and adorable Bobby and Dash moments (once I got over one or two frustrations)
Read if you like: • cozy mystery • found family • friends to lovers
Is this really the end of Dash, Bobby and the chosen family called The Last Picks, I really hope not! I have loved this cozy mystery series and have fallen in love with the characters. Who knew that Gregory Ashe could write a cozy, uncomplicated, snarky series when he is so well known for his deep and dark books. Maybe he will also miss these guys and give us an occasional update🤞🏻
I have to say that this was a really good way to end the series, coming full circle with Vivienne reappearing and then Dash having to investigate her death again only this time for real.
The book was set at a writers con and as Dash has finally published his Will Gower book he was attending and scheduled to speak. Poor introverted Dash was totally out of his comfort zone and when people start recognising him and he has fans, he is horrified.
Dash and Bobby have come so far in their relationship. It started so slowly and with a lack of communication but they are now having a fully fledged adult relationship, supporting each other and encouraging each other in their dreams and ambitions and I love it.
I definitely recommend this book and the whole series and thank you Gregory for the very last paragraph, it put a smile on my face and warmed my heart❤️
Love this series. Dash is every person with their self doubts, who has friends who are family that love him and Bobby who is that great guy who really gets him and still loves him.
This was a great series ender. Coming full circle back to Vivienne and now investigating her death, her real death. A public writers con, where Dash must speak to people and they seem to recognize him, he’s pretty horrified. Once again, put in the spotlight, Dash tries to stay safe but trouble finds him anyway. Bobby and Dash have come so far, they communicate like adults and support each other’s dreams. Really enjoyed getting to know these two and the Last Picks.
I have enjoyed every one of The Last Picks books. Gregory Ashes makes me laugh out loud, cry out loud and turn pages so fast. He is a wonderful author and I always want more!!!!
This is the perfect ending to this series (both the entire book and the actual final chapter)! This book really does feel like a grand finale, with lots of meaningful callbacks to the previous books, while still standing as its own solid story. I adore these characters and this series, and am so sad it's coming to an end (at least for the foreseeable future). GA has a lot on his plate, but I'll be thrilled if he comes back to visit these characters again in the future. If not, I think where he left them off is still perfect.
Anyone who has enjoyed the series so far will very likely find this to be a satisfying ending, but still with room for imagination about the characters' futures.
Great cozy series. Wonderful emotional soliloquies. Fun characters. Full circle writing. And to be honest, I loved the formula! Will miss all of these guys
The last book of this series is here, and I truly think it's a wonderful ending. We see a Dash who has grown a great deal since book 1, who finally is sure about who he is and what he wants, and it's a thing of beauty :P
I love the sense of full circle that Vivienne’s presence gives us. And that the mystery is all about books and the world of writing.
And even while the story's main focus is the mystery (obviously!), there is also this undercurrent regarding Dash receiving a wonderful offer for a TV series about him (Mr Murder!), involving writing true crime books and books about said series. But Dash is not as excited as everybody else is around him. Because, yes, this is a big deal, lots of money, popularity... it should be an easy decision, and yet... And I particularly like how, strangely, it's Vivienne who helps Dash to make his final decision. Talk about complicated relationships XD
Dash and Bobby's relationship has also changed for good. Dash truly gets Bobby and vice versa; they talk, they understand each other's fears and weakness and they work through them. It's wonderful *smiles happily*
And OMG! Fox reads fanfiction in AO3 *dies laughing* I should have guessed *g*
And I know you'll agree with me that Keme rescuing Dash is one of the best scenes in the book.
And that ending... *dies of sheer love*
So, yes, as I said before, a great ending to the series ♥
And it’s back to the beginning, with Vivienne having a last hurrah. With Dash getting in danger (AGAIN), Bobby and Dash having a wee wobble, and some vital truths about Dash himself and who he is finally acknowledged.
I don’t know why, but somehow, I struggled a little through the midst of this. I’ve always loved all Dash and Bobby moments, and I’m generally ok with the coziness of the mysteries in this series, but I have to admit that it took me three takes to get through this last instalment.
I wonder if I got maybe a little tired of it all after so many books? Or whether the initial charm of the Last Picks (who aren’t that much in this book) has finally worn off. Or maybe, I was simply not in the right mood for this. Who knows?!
All in all, I liked this series, even if Greg sometimes crosses lines I’d rather stay on one side of. It was cute, funny, and Dash and Bobby are sweet (in the best possible way). Their relationship development is what made me pick up book after book. The deep, meaningful conversations they had. And how they navigate making a life with each other.
So, if fancy some VERY cozy mysteries, some unique characters and two exasperating, but lovely MCs, you might want to try this.
I'm really torn by two emotions, one I am elated that the series ends at such a high point both story wise and in terms of writing but at the same time I'm seriously devastated that the series is over. I loved The Last Picks so much, it brought me so much joy over the last 2 years. Every new book was like meeting long lost friends and going on an adventure. I'm going to miss them so so much.
Is there a mystery? Of course! A full circle mystery that sees Dash and co. trying to solve the murder of none other than Vivianne Carver. And look, GA writes good mystery, cozy or otherwise. But what I really cared about with this one is getting an emotionally satisfying for Dash. And I did.
We met Dash insecure, not sure what he wanted, not sure what love looked like, and unable to make progress on his book. And now? He's got his book, his man, and the life that he wants. Secure? Well, it's Dash, I'm not sure we'll ever make it all the way there, but so much growth from book one.
On the whole, cozy mysteries aren't my thing and I'm looking forward to getting back to the angst fest of GA's usual fare, but I have enjoyed these books so much more than I would have anticipated. I love Dash's neurotic little heart to pieces. The Last Picks, the humour, the banter, and of course, Dash and Bobby. These books were clever, playful, and heartfelt, and a total pleasure to read.
This book was a nice little holiday gift of sweetness for all of us GA fans. A lovely end to a lovely series.
Dash and 3 of his students go to a writers convention that’s held in at the college. Dash gets the shock if his life Vivienne Carver is there, somehow she’s released from prison. And while he tries to figure out how she got out, and what she’s up to, he comes across her dead body. As he tries to figure out who killed her, another person is killed, one of his students get’s attacked. And then he gets attacked, Dash almost dies, Keme saves him. Dash and Bobby plan for a romantic dinner, he gets sidetracked. Bobby seems upset, and Dash figures out why. Dash proposes to Bobby, he says yes. Dash does figure out who the murderer is.
The book ends in a very happy moment, which I love, but I’m also sad that this is the final book in the series. I really enjoyed reading about Dash, Bobby, Indira, Millie and Keme.
Oh My. This is a hard one to write-only because it is the last book in the series and that makes me so very SAD (a la Millie!). Retool is a masterclass in long-form storytelling and emotional payoff. As the twelfth book in the series, Gregory Ashe proves once again why he’s unparalleled at character-driven crime fiction. The mystery is sharp and tightly constructed, but what truly shines is the evolution of the characters—every scar, every hard-earned moment of growth feels authentic and deeply deserved. This 12 book cozy series has been the best kickstarter! This is a deeply satisfying final installment that rewards longtime readers while reminding us why we fell in love with this series in the first place. Smart, heartfelt, and unforgettable—Retool is Gregory Ashe at the top of his game.
I cannot believe this is over I'M NOT READY FOR IT!!
I love Dash so much. He's so messy and insecure and just unbelievably human. But the amount of growth we've seen throughout these 12 books is unparalleled. The Dash of Book 1 would not recognize the Dash of book 12 and I love him so much for it.
I do wish we had a little more of the Last Picks in this one, as this one has few scenes in Hemlock House, but it really does come full circle in terms of plot and narrative. I'm so glad that Dash has found exactly what he wants and needs and is no longer letting others make plans for him.
Ashe's first foray into Cozy was a resounding success and I hope we get so much more!
The last twenty months of Dash & Co. has been an absolute delight. Not only has it been a pleasure to watch this story unfold over twelve masterfully crafted books, but it’s been an honour to watch the characters blossom.
This is the first cosy mystery series I’ve tried and it has just gone to show that this genre can — and in Gregory’s case, WILL — be written with depth, heart, and intrigue. The layers of world building, character development, and a full circle plot create a vibrant tapestry of story that leaves the reader both satisfied and simultaneously ready to reread.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book and, more importantly, this series.
I’m not sure how many years “The Last Picks” has been around, but I have come to love that roughly every month an a half there would be a new mystery—some poor person(s) in Hastings Rock would be murdered, and Dash would have to solve it.
I have loved getting to know these characters and having a chance to escape the ugly real world and spend some time in Gregory Ashe’s imaginary one. If you haven’t read this series, I envy you—go get started.
Gregory Ashe’s writing just keeps getting better and better. I’m not quite as creepy as Spenser, but am definitely a big fan!
This series has been a joy, and in this wrap-up volume, Greg Ashe really brings the whole thing together. I don't want to include a lot of spoilers, so I'll just say that this was a fitting send-off to the Last Picks (and Bobby). I still have a few quibbles, but then when don't I? It was a ton of fun to see Greg write cozies, and I can't wait for whatever he has in store for us next.
My thanks to the author for an advance copy of this book.
Dash is back where we first saw him with the murder of Vivienne. Bobby is a newly promoted detective and Dash is now a published author and is at a convention where Vivienne is killed. Lots of suspects and of course Dash solves the mystery. I have really enjoyed these books. Dash and his series of friends were worth getting to know and it ends on a nice surprise for Bobby and Dash.
Retool is the twelfth and final book in the Last Picks series. This was such a wonderful end to the series and brings us round to the beginning with Vivienne. A great mystery that really shows the growth that Dash has gone through throughout the series. Just loved it, can't wait to see what GA brings us next.
So this is supposedly the end of The Last Picks series. I am hoping that there will be a spin off series or the occasional one off books with these characters.
Great ending to this series. I will miss these characters, but I can always revisit them by rereading my favorite of the books. I love how this book circles back to the issues from the first book in a way that wasn’t contrived.
