Wayward Sons #3

On the Other Side

Rate this book
I built my life on my belief in justice. Until the day the system proved me wrong.

Now I’m back on Hatterwick Island with nothing left—no career, no credibility, and no illusions about the law I once trusted. The only thing heavier than the guilt I carry is knowing I once turned my back on a man who didn’t deserve it.

Rios Carrera.

Twelve years ago, my cousin disappeared, and he was the last one to see her alive. I believed the whispers that he was responsible. I made him the villain of the story—and he has every reason to hate me for it.

But when a graduate student vanishes and the police insist she left of her own accord, Rios is the only one willing to look deeper. What starts as a search for the truth drags us into something darker than either of us imagined.

Reluctant allies become something far more dangerous. Because the closer we get to uncovering what’s been buried on this island for decades, the more I realize justice isn’t black and white…and the man I once condemned may be the only one I can trust with my life—and my heart.

I really enjoyed this book. The action and suspense kept me reading way past when I should have been asleep. I especially liked the way Rios and Madden were able to slowly break through the emotional walls and find love. I can't wait to read Jace and Layla's story.

4.5/5⭐️

This was my first time reading by Harper Jackson, and I only realized later she also writes as Kait Nolan which explains why I liked the writing so much. I was hooked from the start and stayed invested until the end.

The mystery was really well done. I loved the plot and how everything slowly came together in a way that felt satisfying and smart.

I appreciated that the romance wasn’t the main focus, but I still really enjoyed how Madden and Rios’s relationship developed. The found family aspect was also a highlight.

Overall, a strong read and I need the last book ASAP.

Thank you to Wildfire Marketing Solutions & Harper Jackson for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Madden and Rios are both back on Hatterwick Island after having their careers fall apart. Before, they weren't exactly friends - he was an informal suspect in her cousin's disappearance, and she believed the (without evidence) things everyone was saying about him. But now, they're working together on a case that seems to have close ties to her cousin's disappearance. They're finding things on this island that have been buried, are coming to light. And the two of them are growing closer every day, so close that Rios is on the alert, ready to jump in and save her when things get really bad.

Rio and Madden's slow burn is so good. Their feelings evolve from wariness to interest to something infinitely stronger. Slow burn can be dare I say it, boring, but with this couple, there's so much else going on that the slow burn makes sense. I actually appreciate their slow burn. For one, it's not boring, their feelings are very obvious, as is their chemistry, and the overarching case is just as important, and blends naturally with the evolving relationship. This series just keeps bringing up more questions about the disappearance of Gwen (Madden's cousin), giving us some answers, but also making us impatient to finally know everything. I hope those answers are coming in the final book, when Jace's story drops.

ON THE OTHER SIDE by Harper Jackson is another fantastic, can’t put down until it’s finished, book. The story of Rios and Madden is both romantic and suspenseful.

Rios and Madden each find themselves as outcasts from their home in Hatterwick and are trying to find their true home. Rios always “had people’ in his “found family” but removed himself from them because he was always searching to right what was wrong and do what the system could not. His military police career falls apart because he wants to take care of what the system doesn’t do.

Madden hated Rios as her family blamed him for her cousin Gwen’s disappearance even after it was discovered that he was not involved. Madden became a lawyer, as her family wanted, and didn’t go back to Hatterwick until she herself found out that the system didn’t always work.

The complexities of their relationship, as well as the twists and turns of what their investigation into the missing grad student, leaves you on the edge of your seat waiting for the next obstacle as well as watching their romance begin to form.

Rios and Madden return to Hatterwick at the same time and live next door to each other. Another girl disappearing caused them to work together as ‘partners’ which Rios friends and family could not believe. However, they both believed that the system would not solve this and they were determined to find out what happened to her and began working together.

During their investigation, they discovered they both had the same goal in life of wanting to right the wrongs and ensure that justice was done. Rios’ experience as Military Police, had the instincts to delve through things and see the hidden dangers. Madden was smart and could use her expertise to find those things that Rios was unable to do.

Awaiting the next book, to find out who else was involved in the “scam” hovering over Hatterwick , Gwen’s disappearance, as well as what the future brings to the members of the “found family . I’m sorry to see this series end but know that Harper Jackson will have another series that will be just as fantastic to read.

This is the fifth book in the Wayward Son series, and oh, my goodness! This was a riveting read. Each book in this series has been better than its predecessor, and this one is no different.

This romantic-thriller follows Madden Reilly, a cousin of Gwen, who went missing thirteen years ago. Madden has just left her job as a prosecutor in California and returned home to Hatterwick, NC, a small barrier island . When Priya, a young graduate student/summer intern goes missing, there’s much concern. When the island’s police chief closes the case without resolution, Madden joins forces with Rios Carrera despite the fact that he’s long been thought by many to be responsible for Gwen’s disappearance. Rios has just recently left his post with Naval law enforcement. The two of them find working together better than anticipated. Their investigative approaches complement each other’s. It isn’t long before they each begin to earn the other’s trust.

Things don’t go smoothly as they delve into what happened to Priya. They come up against dead bodies, murder attempts, fire, and discover a pattern of missing persons that disturbs them. No matter the danger, they refuse to give up on digging in and learning Priya’s fate.

This book was an amazing ride. I very much enjoyed watching how Madden, Rios, and the Wayward sons and their partners worked together to solve Priya’s disappearance. While I wasn’t surprised by some of the things that happened at the end of the book, I was fully surprised by how they came about.

There’s still more to this series to come in the next book, and I’m anticipating it. I highly recommend this book and the entire series.

I received an advanced reader copy of this book from the author. I thank her for her generosity, but it had no effect on this review. All opinions in the review reflect my true and honest reactions to reading this book.

This reader is loving this series. Madden & Rio's is my favorite couple so far in this ongoing series.

The moment we started turning the pages, we knew we were going to love this one, and we did. The plot was engaging and filled with mystery and suspense, intrigue and beautiful friendships, and we could not put this one down.

Both Rio and Madden had gotten raw deals growing up; although not the same, they have something to bond over. Rio is returning to the Island which brings up old memories and old wounds. Seeing his sister's happiness makes it worth it. Madden is licking her wounds from an unexpected event that happened to her, but that event led to her having an epiphany, and she is seeing things in a different light now.

Although Madden and Rio were somewhat enemies, a common cause brings them together to find a missing woman, and they find they have more in common with each other than they thought possible.

The push and pull between the couple was awesome, and their chemistry is palpable. They made a beautiful couple, and we loved that the couple got to know the real yous and what is below the surface, and it is not always the way it seems, and the fact that Madden now had a champion in her corner sweetened the deal.

The cast of characters was amazing and supportive, fun, and had the "found family " vibe going on; they all added depth to the story. The plot twists were exciting, and we are finding out that this small island holds some very dark secrets that are about to be explosive, and what they uncovered was just the tip of the iceberg.

In closing, we will say we loved every bit of this story, and we need more champions like Madden and Rio's in the real world, someone to fight for the underdogs like Priya and others when no one else cares and the system fails its victims.

Once again, we are in the Outer Banks in Hatterwick Island. This is the place where a group of boys became brothers by choice, joined the Navy and little by little are finding not only their way back, new life but also love.
But the road to happiness is not an easy one.
This time the story belongs to former MP, Rios Carrerra , the boy from the worng side of town, some thought had caused the disappearance and maybe death of a young 15 year old girl, and Madden Reilly, daughter of a wealthy family and the cousin of the girl that disappeared all those years ago.
Rios is back in town to visit his family while trying to decide what to do next with his life after he stood up for his principles and the upper rank suggested a separation from the job he loved.
Madden, a prosecutor in San Francisco , experienced the aftermath of a conviction gone wrong wrong. Little does she know that the boy she always was told and believed was responsible for her cousin’s disappearance, is also back in town.
As these two get to know each other, and let down their past assumptions, a sort of friendship forms. Especially when another girl goes missing . Is this the only one since her cousin, or have there been others and it has all been hidden by the town and the sheriff?
This was a story filled with suspense. What is was really happening in the island?
It’s also was a story about friendships, new beginnings, hope and second chances in life and love.
The author creates main characters that are likable, complex, ethical and wonderful. Can’t wait for the next book in the series.
Another great addition to the series.
I was entrusted a copy of this book. The opinions expressed are solely my own.

Investigations and healing

I loved, loved, loved this beautiful tale of healing woven into a romantic suspense tale. Not only did I fall into this story and could not put it down from sentence one but oh boy did the big feels start early with this one. First I fell into love with wounded and battered Rios, then I fell in love with wounded and battered Madden, and finally I fell in love with them as a couple. Rios grew up at Hatterwick Island on the wrong side of the tracks in a home where he protected sisters from a violent father. He was military police in the Navy but has recently been separated for reasons. Madden grew up at Hatterwick Island from money and privilege. She was a prosecutor in CA before resigning her job and returning to Hatterwick for reasons. They were on opposite sides of the disappearance 10 years ago of a 15 year old girl where Rios was perceived as being guilty and Madden parroted the accusations. When a young grad student goes missing they join forces when the police are ignoring it to investigate what happened and hopefully help find her. This was the best kind of enemies to lovers story - enemies from a long time ago - who have been changed and shaped into something different by life. So no vitriol or current clashing. Instead, there was immediate physical attraction between them and then the emotional connections were built moment by moment and interaction by interaction until their hearts were as intertwined as their purpose. Separate from the fantastic romance part of the story, the suspense and mystery was just as captivating. I was on the edge of my seat wondering whether they’d find the missing women and trying to figure out the clues. I love this series and cannot wait for the final story.

Mystery about girls being taken from the Outer Banks

The disappearance of another girl on Hatterwick Island cranks up the urgency to determine what really happened 12 years earlier and whether someone continues to prey on local young women. Madden and Rios have both returned home after experiencing some professional adversity - Madden as a District Attorney and Rios as military police. The pair have history - when the original girl went missing, Rios was accused - with no evidence - of being involved and Madden assumed the local police were right. When she apologizes and asks for his help, they agree to team up to try to find the missing girl.

This is very fast paced and suspenseful. I couldn't stop turning the pages. When the cops refuse to investigate, this couple digs in to find out what really happened. Without access to official law enforcement channels, they need to find and interview witnesses, check out cyber trails, and get the other Wayward Sons and their partners involved. As they get closer to answers, their lives are at risk.

Both main characters are smart, principled and determined. There's definitely chemistry but the emphasis of the book is on the mystery versus the romance.

While the book doesn't exactly end on a cliffhanger, there are lots of open questions and you will need to read the final book in the series to find out what's really going on. This is not a standalone; the original crime was introduced earlier in the series and important discoveries were made in the preceding book.

This is latest installment in the Wayward Sons series and one that deepens the overarching mystery that keeps me hooked. I especially loved seeing Rios take center stage. He’s one of the most compelling Wayward Sons, and his story is layered, emotional, and deeply satisfying as we learn more about the struggles he has overcome and the strength that defines him.
One of the standout elements is the dynamic between Rios and Madden. Madden’s fall from grace adds a powerful emotional layer, and watching her navigate her struggles while working alongside Rios feels authentic and engaging. Their partnership develops naturally through investigation, trust, and vulnerability, making their connection feel genuine and well-earned.
The balance between romance and suspense is handled beautifully. As a team, they are a strong investigative duo, and their growing relationship brings warmth and heart to the unfolding mystery. I also appreciated how Harper Jackson continues to weave the larger series arc into this installment without losing focus on the characters’ personal journeys.
This book kept me fully invested from beginning to end, both because of the evolving mystery and the emotional depth of Rios and Madden’s story. It’s a strong addition to the series and left me eager for more, especially knowing the next book will focus on Jace.

This book was so exciting and suspenseful! The beginning gave us a glance of how the island police work, which did not give me any warm fuzzies. When a 15 year old girl goes missing, Rios goes to the police to tell them what he saw. Little did he know the police chief would blame him for her disappearance making the whole town leery of him. After all that happened, Rios joins the military and is gone for a long period. I love that he joined the police area in the military. He had a good heart and a wonderful family who had grown up on the poor side of town. When he comes back he meets up with Madden who was the cousin of the missing girl. I was glad to see she had apologized for how she treated him back then as she was more mature now and seen to many awful things being a prosecutor in LA. When one of the grad students goes missing, Rios and Madden with the help of their friends take on looking for her as the police chief would do nothing. There were so many secrets on the island with some terrible things happening to Madden that kept me on the edge of my seat. I just can’t say enough of how good the book was. I can’t wait for the next book! I strongly encourage you to read the book.

Spinetingling suspense layered with profound emotions.

The Wayward Sons—a found family of boys now grown into men—have built their lives on Hatterwick Island, North Carolina. Rios (one of the men) has returned home after separating from the Navy, while Madden comes back nursing the wounds of a career setback. When a graduate student goes missing, the two join forces to search for her, only to find the case stirring up painful memories of a friend who vanished years earlier.

I loved everything about this story. The vulnerability in Rios and Madden felt tender as they began to understand each other, and recognize they are not so different afterall. Watching their connection deepen while they worked side by side on the investigation absolutely melted my heart. Their relationship unfolded naturally, with a quiet poignancy that kept me completely enraptured. Every character is well-developed, multifaceted, and felt real enough that I would love to get to know them. The suspense was spine-tingling with twists that kept me riveted throughout the book. As we near the conclusion of this series, we uncover more about Gwen’s disappearance, a mystery that has haunted me since the first book. I really want to know what happened and can’t wait for what happens next.

Absolutely enthralled by this book! Madden and Rios' romance is definitely a slow build but their story grabbed me from page one and didnt let go.

For much of this book, Rios and Madden are colleagues of sorts, having come together to try and solve a missing person's case. As a trained prosecutor and an ex navy cop, they each have certain skills to bring to the case, but as two people still haunted by their pasts, they share so much more: both are trying to find meaning in loss, to have something good come from their percieved mistakes and find a place to call home after being exhiled from the last place they thought of as home.

The way these two show up for each other in often small, occasionally life saving ways, is really lovely to read. They meet the dangers they face, together, seemingly without even realising how much the other has come to mean to them.

I am so grateful to have received this bas an ARC to review and hope to read more by Harper Jackson for sure.

On the Other Side is book 3 in the Wayward Sons series which I didn't realize when I decided to pick it up to read. I was definitely hooked by all of these characters and the suspense of the mystery surrounding the disappearance of the girls in town. I'm going to have to definitely go back and read the other books in the series to see what other things I missed that we're going on. I absolutely loved the connection between Rios and Madden. They have a connection from years ago when Madden's cousin disappeared and the town turned the blame onto Rios. However, when they are both back in town she learns that things are not always what they seem.

This book definitely took me on a ride. The drama and suspense of trying to solve the mystery of what was going on in town mixed in with the building romance between Rios and Madden had me on the edge of my seat from start to finish. The writing was wonderful and the characters were definitely relatable. This is a must read story and series for sure. I can't wait to get my hands on the next book to get some of the questions answered that I was left with. -By Alisa

I was extremely excited for Rios’ story and boy oh boy! Harper Jackson more than exceeded my expectations!! Rios and Madden’s story is the 4th book in the Wayward Sons series by Harper Jackson, who is Kait Nolan’s alter ego with actual murderers in the mix!

Rios and Madden went to school and grew up on Hatterwick island but the the tragedy in their teen years meant they never connected. Until now. Rios is back on the island for a bit and so is Madden. There is awkwardness when they see each other but then, a mysterious disappearance on the island forces them to work together.

Sparks fly. Literally. They learn to trust each other. And then they realise their attraction. The story is full of action and adventure, sleuthing, mystery, and more!!! Plus there is also the wayward sons and their significant others who show up, the other notable characters on the island, the nuances of a place that sees a lot of tourists, and more!! The chemistry is off the charts! The banter between the friends is part of friendship goals and found family !! Absolutely loved it and can’t wait for the next one!!!

I had been waiting for Rios' story. It was well worth the wait. There was a nice amount of mystery and suspense. It was good to see the gang come together to help Rios and Madden. I enjoy their sense of family, camaraderie, loyalty, trust, and friendship.

I expected two things to happen in this book. Both of my suspicions proved to be correct and that took absolutely nothing away from my enjoyment of this book. I did like the way Rios and Madden's relationship developed. I liked the way they just got each other. There wasn't a ton of miscommunication, mostly a lot of understanding and acceptance.

I'm not a big slow burn fan, but this book helped me to realized it's not as much the slow burn. It's the slow burn with a lot of antagonism between the couple that irritates me. Fortunately that wasn't the case with Madden and Rios.

Not only was there an epilogue, there was a bonus epilogue. Icing on the cake! I am looking forward to Jace's book. Rating: 4.5 Stars

ON THE OTHER SIDE by Harper Jackson is another fantastic book that I had a tough time putting down. Rios and Maddens story is both romantic and full of suspense.
Maddens family found an easy target in Rios when her cousin Gwen disappeared. And though Madden has apologized, Rios might not be so easy to forgive. But when a graduate student goes missing, and the police insist she left of her own accord, Rios is the only one willing to help Madden look deeper. Soon the search for the truth drags them into something darker than either of them imagined. As the start uncovering what’s been buried on this island for decades, the close proximity leads to more than just solving the mystery.
This was a wonderful suspense intertwined with an equally beautiful romance. The twists and turns of finding the grad student kept me on the edge of the seat, and their romance provided a beautiful break from the gripping tension.
Eagerly awaiting the next book to see what the author has next in store for us.

I am so loving every single book in this series. I love Kait Nolan romances and I love her romantic suspense that she writes as Harper Jackson. She has figured out the perfect recipe for the amount of both romantic and suspenseful tension that creates the perfect read.

This story has Madden and Rios as the main characters. Characters from the previous books as well as some new round out the character list. There is something really dark going on on the island they love and when the law doesn't follow through on the investigation, Madden and Rios combine to do their own investigation, even though they had issues before. The more they find out, the more dangerous the situation becomes.

There's only on more book left in the series, and I can't wait to see what really happened to the girl who disappeared many years ago when they were all teenagers.

Thanks to Wildfire Marketing Solutions for the digital copy. All thoughts are my own.

This book has so many surprises and twists that I could not put it down. It is part of a series but can be a standalone since the author makes it easy to meet the characters. The family and friends (“Wayward Sons”) dynamic is very special and heartwarming.
This story begins with two people, Rios and Madden, who both return to their hometown of Hatterwick due to unfortunate career-related events. Their backstory is interesting and it is both fun and sad to see how their relationship evolves.
There is so much mystery in this book, including a missing person (or are there more than one?), murder, attempted murder, false accusations, shocking discoveries, corruption, and a swoon-worthy romance (but, of course!). I just couldn’t stop reading, wanting to know what happens next. Will they stay on the island? Will they salvage their careers? I highly recommend this book and cannot wait for the next one!

The Wayward Sons series just keeps getting better. Madden and Rios are from totally different backgrounds and seem to have nothing in common. Rios has left the military, where he was military police, and has come back to Hatterwick Island to figure out what's next in life. Madden's life as a prosecutor in LA imploded, and she too has come back home to decide what to do next. Together, they investigate a missing woman case and find more than they bargained for. The more information they find, the more questions they have. While they are working together, they learn that their preconceived notions of each other are wrong. Feelings bloom between them that can't be ignored. As danger lurks, they have to dig deep to find the truth about the island and their feelings for each other. My only complaint is that I wanted Madden to stand up to her dad and cut all ties with her family. I highly recommend On The Other Side. I recommend the entire series. Looking forward to the next book.

Wow!! What a tumultuous return to Hatterick Island, most recent installment of Wayward Sons series. With the background mystery of her cousin’s disappearance years ago, Madden returns to the island to re-center her life after losing her job. She is neighbor to Rios, the man that the chief of police had targetted as having something to do with the disappearance. When a young grad student goes missing, they team up by circumstances to try to find her. When you think the story is going one way, more detours are discovered. When you think you know what will happen, you will still be surprised! It made for late nights and unproductive days trying to get to the end of this book!! Not disappointed and I look forward to the next installment to hopefully find out what is happening. This can be read as a standalone but is better appreciated when reading the first books of the series. Amazing book!

This series just gets better…

The way Harper Jackson creates this underlying mystery through all of the books in the Wayward Sons series while giving readers enough pieces of the puzzle to not feel like we never get answers is a skill I have not seen often. The individual mysteries that are resolved within the suspense and romance on Hatterwick Island, though solved at the end of the story, still somehow continue to tie into the dangerous undercurrent that never disappears. The characters continue to be exceptionally written and multi dimensional. Rios and Madden have a history prior to both of them winding up back on the island. As they unintentionally wind up working together to help in the latest dangerous situation on the island, they both discover parts of one another they didn't understand when they were just teenagers. I cannot wait for the final book in the series and the suspense that is sure to come along with it!

Another amazing addition to the Wayward Sons series. This romantic suspense will have you on the edge of your seat for most of the book and will leave you needing more. Rios is the town pariah but now he’s back and trying to find his way as a civilian again. Madden also finds herself back on the island after a possibly career ending loss as a prosecutor and she decides she needs time to see what her next step will be. But when there is a disappearance on the island it brings them both closer and they are able to not only help with the case but also help each other in ways that they didn’t know could be possible. While on this journey of finding the missing person, more things are revealed that tie towards the mystery of Madden’s cousin Gwen. And even though we are left with more questions and curiosity of what happened in the past, Rios and Madden make it to their HEA. I can’t wait for the next book. I am fully invested in the mystery surrounding the disappearance of Gwen and of course the other characters and how it all ties together. Definitely a must read series.

After facing suspicion years earlier for a missing girl Rios has spend the years since trying help others by working for the military police. When he realizes that the rules will only let him do so much he returns to his hometown to make decisions about his future.

When Madden’s cousin disappeared, she focused her life on ensuring that the guilty were held accountable through her career as a prosecutor however her latest case has left her disillusioned, so she returns to her hometown. When another woman goes missing she realizes that Rios is the one person who may be able to help even if she had previously held him responsible for her cousin’s disappearance.

The intrigue part of the story keeps you on edge, the romance is heartwarming and the connection between Rios and Madden undeniable as they are kindred spirits who both find themselves at a crossroads in their professional lives

Another hit, but another one is coming. This series has me hooked and I just wanna know what happened to Gwen! This book's Wayward son is about Rios who was the original person to be blamed without cause for her disappearance. The town was not nice and always suspicious of him, but he still came back when he was done with the military. Gwen's cousin Madden and her family were one of the strongest voices, but things have changed for Madden. She comes back when life shows her it isn't black and white and cops and the law isn't always for the right way, but sometimes the easy way. Another missing girl really opens both of their eyes to what is going on their island and they are determined to find her and figure out what is going on. The ending is a showstopper I can not wait for the last book!!

What a book! On The Other Side by Harper Jackson delivers twist after twist as the gripping plot races toward a satisfying finale. I’ve loved this entire series, but I was especially eager for Rios’s story - and it absolutely exceeded my expectations. The action and suspense are dialled all the way up, keeping me reading late into the night.
Watching Rios and Madden find their path to a hard-won happy ever after was a true highlight. Their chemistry is electric, and their journey unfolds into a deeply compelling love story. It was also a joy to revisit familiar faces from Hatterwick Island; the sense of camaraderie and community is vivid and heartwarming.
I recommend this book wholeheartedly. While I’m excited for the next instalment, I’ll be a little sad to say goodbye to these wonderful characters—and I’m already hoping there’s much more to come from this talented author.

Harper Jackson (one of my favorite authors) called this a CHONK in a newsletter and she wasn't kidding! There are lots of moving parts to this story.....the evolving relationship between Rios, the island pariah because so many believed he was responsible for the disappearance of Gwen Busby, and Madden Reilly, a former Hatterwick resident; the disappearance of a grad student; the continuing dereliction of duty by the police chief....LOTS of moving parts.

The suspense begins and doesn't let up. Rios and Madden partner to investigate the disappearance of the grad student and stumble onto a much larger issue setting the stage for a blockbuster ending to the series in the finale, Carry On, Wayward Son. Start the series with Smoke on the Water and read in order to get the full effect of this awesome series!

This is a fantastic instalment in an amazing romantic suspense series. This is the penultimate book of the series, so masses of intrigue and gripping mystery. There are plenty of twists and turns to keep you on the edge of your seat, along with the highly satisfying romance between Rios and Madden. The growth of these characters, their chemistry and the action as this mystery unfolds and starts to reach its conclusion makes for an exhilarating and intoxicating read.

The mystery within each book is resolved enough for a satisfying read, but the overall mystery grows throughout the series, and with one book remaining I am on the edge of my seat for Jace’s story and to find out what is really going on in the shadows on Hatterwick Island.

I voluntarily reviewed an advanced copy of this book.

The story has two timelines and they explain characters's behavior in the present with situations that happened in the past. Rios and Maddie had their lives intertwined when Gwen disappeared. Maddie was a teenager then and influenced by others chose to point Rios as the one responsible for Gwen's disappearence. He was Gwen's best friend but the color of his skin was not white so all fingers were pointed against him. Both fled Hatterwick, she to become a lawyer, he to join the Navy. Both will return to the island when their professional lives fall apart and will join forces when a student/researcher disappears. They'll discover a much bigger problem in the island than just the girl's disappearence and will also find a way to themselves. The story is engaging, entertaining, and most unfortunately, portrays a problem that can be found worldwide.
I thank the author for this ARC.

This was a great addition to the Wayward Sons series set on Hatterwick Island. This time the spotlight is on Rios and Madden, the girl who wronged him many years before.

Although the potential for romance initially seems unlikely given their history, sparks fly when they team up to investigate the recent disappearance of a graduate student. Their attraction and growing bond slowly deepens throughout the suspenseful plotline but is well worth the wait.

Characters from previous books put in a welcome appearance which added to the overall enjoyment and ongoing mystery of what happened to Madden's missing cousin Gwen. I look forward to seeing what Harper Jackson has in store for Jace in the next installment of the series.
