With the tulip being my favorite flower and a very notable tulip festival not far from us that we regularly attend I wasn't sure what to expect from this story. I loved it! I had no idea tulips were once so valuable to barter and trade with. I loved the story and showing the reader that sometimes gifts can be so special they aren't equatable to a dollar amount.

I gave this book to my granddaughter who turned 4 last month on her first European trip which included the Netherlands! The story centers on a young Dutch girl whose father gives her several valuable tulip bulbs for her birthday and tells of the historic tulip mania that occurred throughout the world in a way that young children would understand.

A very interesting book for young readers to practice reading and become acquainted with the Tulip craze in Holland, a piece of history that I did not know about until reading this book.

Loved the book the great tulip trade, both for its illustration and the story. Written by Beth Wagner burst the story is about a little girl whose father gifts her 6 tulips on her birthday. Tulips in holland in 1600s was considered precious. The little girl is approached by a farmer, a painter, a carpenter and various other people who trade their wares for each tulip. The last rare tulip semper Augustus remains with her despite her getting offer by the mayor to exchange it for gold.
