A pretty good book. It follows the same format as other Assassins Creed books I have read in the future and in the past dealing with the genetics memories.

Pirate Captain Edward Kenway is in it for the money. However with his ship destroyed an encounter with a half dead shipwrecked stranger carrying a message that might just change his destiny.

In the future, a teenage boy is recruited to finish his estranged mothers work. What is his connection to this old pirate?

The story is ok, I would give it 3 stars. The artwork and action make this four stars for me. The battle scenes on the ships are especially well done. The book finishes with a choice in both times.

3,5 Sterne.

DNF at 60% because…let's say the portrayal of Adewale is "major yikes" territory.

Assassin's Creed Awakening Volume 1 is very light retelling of the first few plot points of Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag. But it's more notable for what the story changes than for what it keeps the same.

Assassin's Creed IV is, at time of writing, my favorite Assassin's Creed game. I loved having the open sea to explore, sailing around in a ship and listening to sea shanties. I loved actor Matt Ryan's vocal performance as protagonist Edward Kenway. But I did sometimes miss having a dedicated main character in the present-day narrative beyond the player-insert.

Surprisingly, my feelings about Awakening are almost the reverse of my feelings about the game. The actual time spent telling the tale of Edward Kenway is not especially exciting. It's rushed, characterization is not strong (although the manga art style is expressive), and I don't think it would make much sense unless you remembered the story of the game. However, we get a main protagonist in the modern-day story who plays a larger role than I was expecting. In some ways, he's a Japanese Desmond (from Assassin's Creed I-III) -- he's using an animus machine at Abstergo Japan with his own cast of side characters under the guise of being a game tester. But obviously with Abstergo, not all is as it seems and he quickly gets in over his head. It's nothing revolutionary, but compared to the rushed and confusing narrative in the historical sections, it's actually quite refreshing to get this modern-day story.

Overall, I was moderately impressed with Assassin's Creed Awakening Volume 1. It's a quick, light read that plows through some major story beats of Assassin's Creed IV, but the modern-day content has me excited to read the second half of the story sometime soon.

The pirate Edward Kenway survives an explosion while fighting English ships. He finds a mysterious letter, like in the game's story. Edward's memories are experienced in the present by Seijin who is using an Animus virtual reality device. Why this particular game is still hailed by some to be the best in the series is beyond me. Still, this retelling is pretty good compared other AC comics I've read so far.

“It's up to you to decide whether you want to know more or not. But what your choice... Take the time to think it through.” — Mastao Yagyu's ather

Awaking is most people's fave pirate assassin Edward, so ACIV: Black Flag. Full disclosure like most of the other gaming graphic I'm reviewing I've never played, watched people play yes but never played.

Let's start with the serious changes, after reading Wikipedia because I know there were a few. Unlike in the game the modern-day user (the Desmond if you will) has a name, Masato Yagyu. Masato does have the requisite connection to the Kenway family. There is a drastic real-world setting change, rather than setting the manga in Abstergo's Montreal headquarters it is set in Japan, I think Tokyo. Given away by the names and the character appearances. Kanji is used where you would expect for a manga. To avoid spoilers I'll hold over the review of part 2. But the plot is really what it says on the packet.

This doesn't feel like it was written for fans of the game series per se. There are a lot of changes, it helps to have passing knowledge but would you really pick up this if you didn't know something about the series? The art is great if pulls you in and creates depth well. Weapons pointed at the reader. The formatting with the bubbles outside the frameworks well too, creating a flow that would otherwise be missing. It's a 3.5/4 star book, it's not the best, I can see fans having a real issue with it due to some of the differences.

Chronique complète :
https://sunread26.wordpress.com/2020/...

Extrait :

Originally I read the first 5 issues in comic format then the whole thing digitally on my Switch through the Rebel Collection but recently bought the two manga issues for my essay research.

Let's just say this manga is a terrible adaption, but I find it funny for the wrong reasons.
The story is... vaguely the same but some characters do not exist, such as Stede Bonnet, and other characters bare no resemblance to their game counterparts, both in visuals and behaviour. It gets much more obvious in the second volume but it shows here as well.
Edward Kenway looks like a damn teenager for one. Mary/Kidd looks nothing like their game counterpart, moves like a ninja and just makes no damn sense. Thatch... oh my child what have they done to your personality. Rogers looks like a 99p store discount version. Torres looks more like his concept art. Du Casse... is mostly the same but that doesn't say much since he barely featured in the game. Adéwalé... Jesus Christ he is a very racist depiction of a black man and has absolutely no balls. And Hornigold, oh my precious Hornigold... why are you so damn moody all the damn time and why are you an absolute unit?
It gets worse in the second volume, but it shows here.
I'm only rating 3 stars mostly because I can get a good laugh out of it.

The video-game was better

Based on the world famous Assassin Creed games we take a manga version of The AC4 Black Flag from the main series. The book uses a different modern day protagonist to explore the memory of Edward Kenway, but Also the story differs greatly has many events are compressed to speed along the story for the manga.

The story isn’t bad but it loses of the vivid world views we get from the game the manga is more story focus but it really usn’t to bad just gives more story-building on the modern settings build of the AC universe.

I read this without knowing that this was basically a spoiler for Black Flag, so... Be smarter than me.
However, the plot felt kinda basic and a bit, like... Uncomfortable? due to the fact how everything was fitting together. There is the A plot and the B plot and you know what will happen in the B plot, because clearly the story has to continue and it just gets annoying when there is supposed to be "intrigue" about whether or not something will happen. Also, do not retell video games as media that you cannot interract with?

The adaptation of AC4-BlackFlag is obviously a bit rushed and modified to feel more manga, I suppose. The person exploring the memories of Edward Kenway is Japanese and he finds out his mother is trapped inside an animus and exploited by the Templars. The rhythm is fast, and the story diverges from the Black Flag one; not necessarily in bad ways. All in all, an enjoyable read although at times it's unclear what happens.

So if I was to give a verdict thus far - pleasant, but rushed.

That was...hm...boring, to say the least. I have no desire to read on whatsoever.

No connection to any character, any new characters are just...there, no introduction or clue what their roles are. The story is generic. Art style confusing with different levels of quality.

Wouldn't waste another dime on that shit.

it changes a lot of the the story from the game which is nice but for someone who has beaten the game and is pretty fond of the story in the game it is difficult to overcome that feeling but the book was interesting nevertheless.

Somewhat interesting, it's more a summary of Black Flag than anything else. The modern day aspect of it is interesting, another data point in the AC world building, but very very short. I don't know if people who didn't play the game will get much out of it. For me it was a nice nostalgia trip.

I bought this for my middle and high school class. I read it before putting it on the shelf... just in case. There were a couple boobies I had to "put a bikini top on" but it was great story. If any my kids pick it up and are into it, I'll definitely look into getting the second book.

I thought this was a fantastic read. I enjoyed the artwork quite a bit, and thought that it was very crisp and clean without looking too polished or overworked. I sometimes find some manga artwork to be a bit messy and hard to decipher, but this was not the case in this book.
I would recommend this to fans of the Assassin’s Creed video game series, but I think that anyone could pick this up and enjoy it without ever playing any of the games.
