The Broken Hotel for Magical Misfits #3

A Hidden Witch’s Spell For Scrying A Lost Vampire: An urban fantasy magical rescue mission

Rate this book
Kidnap plus theft equals total catastrophe.

Our first date ends in disaster—Silas is kidnapped by his vampire brethren, and worse, our magical masks that allow us to travel between worlds are gone too. Which means I’m officially more than a little screwed.

With no way to reach the vampire homeworld, Silas is doomed—branded a traitor and marked for execution.

But I’m not giving up.

Walking between worlds is my family’s magical inheritance. If I can find someone to guide me through the In-between, I just might reach the vampire realm in time to save him.

All I have to do is outwit an entire planet of deadly super-predators.
Oh, and not get lost forever in the space between worlds.

Easy, right?

A Hidden Witch’s Spell For Scrying A Lost Vampire is Book Three in The Broken Hotel for Magical Misfits—a series that’s custom-made for lovers of strong heroines, quirky magical characters and found family, all woven together with heart, humour, and action-packed adventure. And that’s to say nothing of the slow-burn romance that spans the series…

It’s been a strange, unbelievable journey to arrive at the point where these books are going to be released into the wild, like rare, near-extinct animals being returned to their natural habitat, already wondering where they’re going to nick cigarettes from on the plains of Africa, the way they used to from the zookeeper’s overalls. C.N. Rowan (“Call me C.N., Mr. Rowan was my father”) came originally from Leicester, England. Somehow escaping its terrible, terrible clutches (only joking, he’s a proud Midlander really), he has wound up living in the South-West of France for his sins. Only, not for his sins. Otherwise, he’d have ended up living somewhere really dreadful. Like Leicester. (Again – joking, he really does love Leicester. He knows Leicester can take a joke. Unlike some of those other cities. Looking at you, Slough.)

With multiple weird strings to his bow, all of which are made of tooth-floss and liable to snap if you tried to use them to do anything as adventurous as shooting an arrow, he’s done all sorts of odd things, from running a hiphop record label (including featuring himself as rapper) to hustling disability living aids on the mean streets of Syston. He’s particularly proud of the work he’s done managing and recording several French hiphop acts, and is currently awaiting confirmation of wild rumours he might get a Gold Disc for a song he recorded and mixed.

This author has a great talent for taking a genre and giving it his own spin, and I’m really here for that. In this latest book, poor Bryar has to go on a journey through worlds again to rescue Silas in his home dimension, and there are many dangers she must face in doing so. This is a wonderful adventure that isn’t to be missed especially if you enjoyed the preceding books. One thing, though, is that the next book is going to be Bryar’s last adventure, and while I can’t wait for it, I’m also very sad. But what a ride it’s been! Highly recommend. I was provided a complimentary copy which I voluntarily reviewed.

Oh do I love this world Chris has created! It's different, unique and so ultra awesome! Starting off pure CN Rowan style, humorous, tongue in cheek events that always make me smile. Yes, a dragon afraid of fire....an imminent date... and then, BAM! Chris slams me back against a wall from where he streers the story, fearful, eyes as wide as saucers...as Bry said, this was exactly how I felt, "the world felt cracked, broken" I sure as heck felt broken! Her emotions and disbelief emulated mine....

Bry is a stunning character! She's a real softy, her friends are her everything, she'll do anything to protect them, even at the cost of herself. Going from no family, to a whole house of awesome misfits, who become the family she could never dream of, is, well, just that, a dream come true. Chris excels at found family vibes, oh heck, who'm I kidding...he excels at his penmanship, his craft, so astoundingly vibrant, visually a masterpiece, in fact, all my senses are on high alert when I read a CN Rowan book! I'm sure he injects magic into the very pages I'm reading, because, not only is the magic system astonishing and brilliant, his characters, pacing, plot and world building truly transports me right into whichever world he currently "possesses" and I, likewise, am possessed. Back to Bry...I was agog at her growth, at how she's evolving and her magic. OMG, her magic is off the charts cool! Her emotions are so real, I feel them in my soul, her love is all encompassing, I feel that in my DNA. She's so quick thinking, smart, determined, resilient. She'll go through anything, anywhere, to help those she loves irrespective of how impossible it might seem and, believe me, WHAT she faced, Filonianus Ogham then almost trapped by the mighty queen, Winter herself, then chased by a weirdo warden, well shoo, just shoo!

Bry's dear...dog? monkey? strange composition of both? Shugmonkey is just precious! He's by her side every step of the way, helping, cajoling, urging her onwards. The warmth, understanding and affection is so beautiful between them, just adored him! Awww, my heart constricted and swelled at the same time when Shug and Bry were stepping, when it was so oppressive, so difficult for them to carry on and Bry realised a very important truth, yes, she had to persevere for Silas but Shug, well.... teary stuff...."He did have someone he could fail. Someone for whom he had to continue. Me. He was doing this for me"

Awww, Silas!!!! Swoon..."when I first laid eyes on you, that bell chimed. Felt it in every atom of my being. Knew that you were the one destiny had made me for". The relationship brewing for Bry and Silas is tender, gorgeous and oh so hot! But many obstacles have to be cleared before anything can even proceed... like usurper Darian. Ooph! I wanted so badly for him to, I don't know, dissolve? Turn to dust? SOMETHING! But Chris, once again, upps the stakes, ups the ante, ups my adrenaline into the stratosphere with his twists and command of his storytelling. Oh my goodness! That battle with Darian was OMG pulse racing, heart stopping, mouth drying!

Amazingly, even though it's was a darn scary and suspenseful read, almost stopping my blood on it's way to my heart, this was lightheartedly fun and there you have the mastery of CN Rowan. He manages to infuse warmth, whimsy, humour, into an otherwise really dramatic read, so flipping effortlessly and with such panache, I'm laughing one minute, cringing the next, wanting to sob 2 seconds later, only to rinse and repeat. But through each emotional tug, each smile, each cringe, with the unexpected after the unexpected, I'm riveted, totally fixated at the story unfolding before me, like a beautiful rose opens it's petals, tantalising my senses, the beauty, the smell, the texture, so too does this book and indeed series engulf me, captivate me, enthrall me. So, don't wait, pick up book one in this AMAZING series now!

CW: some violence, cruelty to sentient beings, referenced enslavement

Thank you to the author for the ARC! “A Hidden Witch’s Spell for Scrying a Lost Vampire” releases August 13, 2025!

The very embodiment of ‘not a single word wasted.’

Things aren’t exactly looking up for Bryar and her House of misfits, but at the very least they’re looking a little more settled. Provided you ignore the fact that the only anchor for the portal now resides in the bookshop and the evil conglomeration determined to ruin Bryar’s life. At least she and Silas are finally getting to go on a date…right up until Silas is kidnapped.

Obsessed. I am absolutely obsessed with this series, and I simultaneously cannot wait to see how it ends and am also horribly saddened by the thought of it drawing to a close. But we’re not there yet, so let me yell about this book for a bit.

You know what’s done particularly well? (Yes, obviously, the whole thing, but let’s focus for a moment) It’s the tension. The yearning. The exquisitely sweet slow burn that’s finally getting to really see itself revealed. It’s beautiful, and it gives this sense of deep, pure adoration that we don’t see often. It’s somehow both understated and highlighted, and I don’t know how that works but it just *does*.

I mentioned before that the author doesn’t waste words, and I think I should explain. This isn’t a ‘short’ book; the length is actually pretty dead-on average for the genre, at least based on others that I’ve read. Theoretically there should be room for at least a little bit of fluff, just for decoration. And yet, nary a cotton ball in sight. Just page after page of constant movement, development, action. There’s plenty of sass, there’s solid world(s?)-building, but there’s not one bit of ‘irrelevant.’ Every word develops something, progresses something; even the small offshoots in Bryar’s (concerningly relevant) trains of thought put in work to build out this incredible picture of the actions and emotions of our characters. You couldn’t trim a single iota of fat off this book if you went at it with an electron microscope. Immaculate.

I really don’t know what else to say. It’s been days since I finished the book, and it’s been entrenched in my memory on a loop since then. I simply do not have the words to do this story justice. It’s not just the characters, it’s not just the plot, and it’s not just the worlds we get to travel through along the way. It’s the magic flowing out of every page, every line, that reaches out and drags the reader into the most incredible adventure.

And the book wyrm. That part helps, too.

I loved this latest installment in this series. It started off all so sweet with Bryar and Silas finally getting to go on a date and then BAM! C. N. Rowan just hits you with a crisis so early on that it completely threw me. I was so not expecting it at all, but what a chaotic ride this book took me on. All the action, all the emotion and all the tension throughout. I loved it and couldn't put it down!

Bryar was such a formidable character in this one. Yes, she broke down, but she definitely didn't stay down for long. Despite everything that had happened, she was so determined to make it right, to get back what she had lost even if it meant sacrificing herself. She was completely surrounded by her found family whose love meant the world to her and gave her the emotional strength she needed to keep going. I loved how everyone was there for her all the way through, with different characters helping out in their own special way, but my love goes to Shugmonkey. What an absolute darling he was! I'm not sure Bryar would have survived without him, not just for his stepping abilities, but for his emotional support as well. He was definitely there for her just when she needed him!

I loved all the different realms this story took us through this time as well, but the prison one and its warden was definitely the creepiest. I can still hear that warden's voice calling out to Bryar!

I can't wait for the next book in this series, which will be a bittersweet one being the last, but can't wait to see what happens next with Bryar's stand against Wergild and how the newer members of her family adapt to being in this world. I also need to see how Bryar and Silas move forward in their relationship - I'm so glad it worked out for them at long last!

Thank you Chris for yet another amazing read. I did receive an ARC copy of this book, but this review is my own, honest one!

**ARC Reader, all opinions are my own**

It’s been a little while since Bryar handed ownership of the bookshop over to her best friend Tisha, and it’s been quite a time since then. Bry has been spending time getting to know the house and its inhabitants. Learning their peculiarities, their idiosyncrasies, and their…issues.

As they are preparing for their first real date, Bryar and Silas are interrupted by another vampire, who identifies himself as Darian, Silas’ cousin and the current king of the vampire home world. Without so much as a “How do you do”, Silas is whisked off by Darian and his henchmen back to Silas’ erstwhile home to stand trial for regicide (killing his father who was a fan of using humans as cattle), and to be publicly executed. No biggie…yikes. Oh, and did I mention that he also grabbed the two masks that make interdimensional portal jumping a whole lot safer and easier?

“A Hidden Witch’s Spell for Scrying a Lost Vampire” is not just a mouthful of a title but also is the third novel in the brand-new series by celebrated urban fantasy author C. N. Rowan, “A Broken Hotel for Magical Misfits.” This is the first new series solo-written by Rowan since the end of the nine-book epic imPerfect Cathar series, and fans are going to be glad they’ve waited. The writing is entrancing, the characters are instantly endearing (and you’ll want to square up back-to-back with Bryar to take on the magical world!), and the suspense… breathtaking. This series has already made good on its promise to be a wild ride of magical proportions, and I can’t wait for the next (and final) book in the series!! I highly recommend this book!

That ending. I am gobsmacked. C.N. Rowan has always been a master of twists and unforeseeable conclusions and he's gifted his readers with a superb one here.

This series is one hell of a ride. There is a truckload of emotion in just this one book and I can only see more coming. The author writes emotion like no-one else and is able to fit it into his storyline so smoothly that while I am following the characters escapades, I am also holding my breath from the tension AND having my heart ripped out. Just amazing.

I was shocked to see a cameo from a character from the author's ImPerfect Bones. The way that arc was tied up was heartbreaking and seeing how time has affected the person involved was sad. Just very, very sad.

The 'something' growing between Bryar and Silas is lovely. Their bond is genuine and deeply felt and so well written that, for me, it's reminiscent of Austen's pairings - “ 'It has been the longest time since I’ve smiled, let alone laughed. I’ve acted for a decade out of honour but never out of pleasure. You brought me back to life. That is a debt I will never forget.' ".
If only Silas would walk out of a lake in a sodden white pirate shirt 😏

A secondary character stepped up to lead in this story and did it brilliantly. It was touching to see heroic qualities attributed to one rejected by his own world, while being welcomed and loved in the world of The Broken Hotel For Magical Misfits.

A definite recommendation and all the stars.

Things have finally settled down enough for Bryar and Silas to have their date, or so they thought. As they begin their date, Bry is taken by surprise and in order to save her Silas allows himself to be taken to his home realm. And after unpacking some surprises, Bry decides that no matter what Silas said she is going to save him. After creative solution from Tisha, she’s on her way with a new lovable character through the realms to get to Silas.
This is definitely a more emotional book that the previous ones in the series. Bry is forced through some tough realms before she manages to get to Silas, with her sheer determination being the only thing getting her through. And once she finds Silas, there are so many emotions for her to unpack and deal with, esp when faced with leaving him there. There were times I wanted to scream right along with her.
We are walked some more insane times and realms in this book. We get to meet some new enemies and quickly say hello to some previous acquaintances as well. Tisha also gets herself a new friend with the same diet she has! And as usual the imagery is top notch and makes you feel like you are slogging through the in-between and into the realms with Bry.
It seems like everything is about to come to a head in the next book and I absolutely cannot wait to see what happens next.

42 Emotions in 1 Book

Damn. I have it bad.

This book is magical enough to swallow up my irises and make the whites of my eyes glow bright. It's fabulous enough for a Book Wyrm to add it to its hoarded collection.

More interestingly fascinating than a bear-sized dog-monkey hybrid and more captivating than the Queen of the Winter Fae without her Summer King calling... Rowan's writing imprisons his reader's imaginations like a mercilous warden.

I encourage you to root yourself into the connection of brilliantly crafted characters, to brace yourself for the adventures of the gaudy Planet of the Vampires, and relax into the long awaited bliss of Ch. 54.

(Swoon)

The heart chime of love rings true throughout this amazing episode, clashing against evil and making happily ever afters an aesthetic cadence. A Hidden Witch's Spell for Scrying a Lost Vampire is a heroic harmonic for the soul, full of feeling and lovely resonance.

Things aren’t going too well for Bry. The portal is unstable due to saving Tisha and on their first date, Silas is kidnapped by his vampire brethren as well as the realm travelling masks.
Bry is determined to save Silas but needs help which comes in the form of her monkey/dog Shugmonkey.
This book has a lot of travelling between realms, some quite frightening, some funny (talking grass comes to mind). Bry’s magic is put to the test.
There is some action, suspense, surprises, and humour. It is tense at times, so you’re on the edge of your seat wondering what will happen next.
In other words, an absolutely great book.
All the characters that live in the hotel are interesting, some new paranormal types, all working together like a close family.
More is learned about Silas’s background and the growing attraction between Silas and Bry.
I just loved this book.

Love is what happens while you make other plans. Also: you don't know what you've got until it's gone.
It's another high octane adventure through the frankly bizzare multiverse that inhabits CN Rowan's mind. The potent imagination is in full display, with book wyrms powered by words, societies of grass that live in terror of the rootless, and a planet of vampires that never left behind the day-glo 90s.
But as those images whip by the windscreen, Bryar must focus on the destination, her ride or die, Silas. As she begins to master her full power, you'll dangle in suspense as you watch her insane plans fall together. Because there's no victory worth it unless you have those you love by your side.

Another fast-paced page-turner!

Bryar is FINALLY going on a date with her sexy brooding vampire, but nothing ever goes as expected for her. He's hauled off right in front of her, & a rescue mission begins, but it takes quite the strange side-quest to get there.
This time, we get to glimpse a few new worlds, revisit (briefly) a familiar one, & explore a where & a when! Lots of heart-pounding action, new magics, new characters, saucy humor, a little sadness, a little spice, & sports (the ball-kicking kind)! I don't think I'll be ready to let these characters go after just 1 more book.

This series is highly addictive! This is non-stop suspense, leaping between action and anticipation of action. It was very hard to put down! These characters are already dear friends in my world, and I wish I could meet Shugmonkey! Yes, I realize that I am specifically mentioning the dog-like critter and not the humanish characters. I love Bryar and all of her found family, as well! Bryar is walking across worlds to free the wonderful Silas, who has been kidnapped by his past. The humanesque folk are well fleshed-out, appealing (well, the good "guys"), and their stories are compelling each in their own right. And I want to learn more about everyone and what is next for them!

Yet another fantastic read from this author. The third book in the series and takes us on an exciting yet frightening trip through multiple worlds that grow and develop under C.N. Rowan's skillful writing. I found myself experiencing so many emotions during this tale from laughter to tears (yes I cried and I'm not ashamed of it).
I cannot wait for the next installment in this series, the writing is second to none, with beautifully crafted worlds and great characters that you will fall in love with.

Fast paced from the first page. Bryar and Silas are finally going on their first real date and all the misfits are hanging around to encourage their friend. Oh, goody, I thought, at last! But no, even before they can leave the house, Silas is kidnapped! The only way to find him is from Tisha's bookshop, Which at first leads them to a trap. Tisha was brilliant in this story, really coming into her own and finding new powers.
Once again, as in all of C.N. Rowan's books, there were parts that made me laugh and others that made me want to cry. An excellent read.

Bryar is finally going to have the date with Silas and can definitely clean up nicely. But luck never seems to be on her side. Suddenly the date has turned into a kidnapping and rescue mission. Bryar uses her magic and has assistance from an interesting house guest that will make you fall in love with them. Traveling through time and worlds continuing to learn and use her magic to save Silas and bring him back home. Be prepared for a lot of on the edge of your seat drama and amazing worlds.

If you're new to this series, what are you doing here? Shoo, go back and read book one first.

I recommend everything this author writes. These books are smart adventures full of urban fantasy and humour, with poignant moments and clever wordplay. But they do need to be read in order as there are recurring characters and subplots that continue from book to book. If you jump into the middle of the pool you might feel a bit lost and Bryar would need to scry for you next.

Superb fantasy series. Part urban, part other worlds with an action packed plot, plenty of humour, and enough mythological characters to satisfy. This is the best one so far. Bryar is finally going on a date with Silas. Except….. (go and read it, no spoilers). I enjoyed this so much, finished in one go, relaxing on a sunny afternoon. Easy read. Each book in the series is a stand alone book, but part of a bigger story. So read them in order if you can so you understand the bigger plot. With at least book 4 to come, more relaxing for me ahead. Thank you to C. N. Rowan for the ARC. The views expressed are all mine, freely given.

Daring rescue

Silas has been kidnapped and taken back to his home world for execution and Bryar will do everything in her power to get him back. Another exciting adventure for Bryar and her new found family. I love the way Bryar sets off, usually without a plan, and her friends believe in her enough to not only follow her but help in any way they can. I am looking forward to the next book to see how the fight for earth against the invading vampires and evil corporation goes.

what ride for Bryar in this book

The characters that C.N. Rowan has crafted in this series continue to develop and gain more depth totally drawing you in to this world. Bryar has a date and can’t wait to see what’s coming next in her relationship with Silas. A knife to her throat was not what she expected. Members of her found family stand with her once more but without access to the portal and the masks how will she travel worlds to get her man.
Loving this series.

Boom. Another great story. Love, sorrow, sarcastic giants and a race against time. All the feels and all the drama. C.N Rowan has an amazing talent with words that draws you in and doesn't release you until the last page. Prepare for a late night reading this book. Might as well book the following day off work to recover

Silas and Bryar's first date is derailed when Silas is forceably invited to a family reunion. I love all the unique misfits, but Shuggy may be my new favorite. So there is a ton of action, adventure, danger, and travel to other realms involved, and I enjoyed every minute of it.

When Bryar prepared for that special first date with Silas, I am pretty sure she wasn't expecting the mayhem that would occur. When Silas is snatched by the King of the Vampires she has to find a way to get to the Vampire lands and rescue him, the question is how without an anchor to open the gates anymore, and with the masks taken with Silas. Enter shugmonkey, he is the magical pet we all wish we had, and I adored him. The journey to reach the vampire lands is fraught with danger, as much as the lands themselves, but Bryar showed that she has strength of her own surviving the terrifying trip without the entire crew to back her up.

The story was angsty without dragging, exciting and frightening but thrilling and hopeful at the same time. The budding relationship between Bryar and Silas is just beautiful. Little elements like the earring in the pocket were brilliant (read it and find out), and the new anchor plot is genius. And did I mention I love shugmonkey!

Starting a story with the sentence "Providing counselling to a dragon was not what I'd expected to end up doing when I'd discovered magic was real." is 100% the best way to get me hooked x. The world needs more dragons!

"Our first date ends in disaster—Silas is kidnapped by his vampire brethren, and worse, our magical masks that allow us to travel between worlds are gone too. Which means I’m officially more than a little screwed."

So Bryar needs to rescue Silas, but without the masks, it is going to take all her abilities & a lot of help from her friends.
This book seriously ticks ALL my boxes. Kickass main character ✅️ Magic ✅️ Action ✅️ Nail biting excitement ✅️ Cuticle destroying suspense ✅️ Humour ✅️ A lil bit of that C N Rowan magic... That magic that makes you forget it's a book! That magic that has made Bryar, Tisha, Alice, Tiddy, Jack, Serena, Jenny, Martin, Valerius, Momoko, Burke & Hare a part of our lives. That magic that happens because he shares his magical lands & imagination with us ✅️

Bryar and Silas are about to head off on their first proper date, when Silas’ past suddenly comes crashing through the portal. Without the masks or amulet, Bryar must try to rescue him from the vampire homeworld – before it’s too late.

This series combines mythical/fairy tale beings with portal fantasy – like The Faraway Tree for adults. The characters are three-dimensional, and I look forward to spending more time with them. While I like Bryar and Silas as a couple, their romance seems to have mostly developed between books, and so feels a little rushed on-page. However, with a thoroughly enjoyable mix of humour, snark, and heartfelt emotion, the story had me hooked until the last page.

I received an advance copy for free and am leaving this review voluntarily.
