A Modern History of the Islamic World
Chronologically charts the histories of societies in the Islamic World
The Islamic world―defined as those regions in which Islam is the dominant or single most important religion―covers territories as far apart as Morocco and Indonesia, Somalia, and Bosnia and includes an extraordinary range of societies and cultures. In A Modern History of the Islamic World, eminent scholar Reinhard Schulze charts the history of these societies in the twentieth century, revealing what they have in common as well as their equally profound differences.
Rather than stringing together individual studies of different countries, the book is structured chronologically, tracing political change in the context of culture and society. Schulze opens with a survey of the impact of colonialism and its attendant modernizing effects on the Islamic world. He then moves on to examine the rise of bourgeois nationalism in the 1920s and 1930s, the era of independence movements, the relationship between Islamic cultures and the "republican" political culture of the Third World, the reassertion of Islamic ideologies in the 1970s and 1980s and, finally, the issues surrounding the relationship between Islamic culture and civil society that dominated debate in the 1990s.

Good overview of Islamic history. Bad translation from German and desperately needs a second edition.

یک استادی داشتیم که متخصص تاریخ معاصر ترکیه بود. یک بار در مورد تطور جریان چپ در ترکیه پرسیدم و گفتم من نمیتوانم آن مرحله گذر از چپ نخبگانی به چپ توده محور را درک کنم که چه اتفاقی آن وسط افتاده.
لبخندی زد و گفت: چون سیر مهاجرت از روستا به شهر در ترکیه را نمیدانی.
بعد در ادامه چیزهایی توضیح داد اما دیگر آنها را میدانستم. چون با این تک جمله اولش کل قضیه را برایم روشن کرده بود.
این روزها این کتاب را میخواندم. نظریه مرکزی کتاب همین دوگانه شهر و روستا، مرکز و پیرامون و تاثیراتی است که بر روندهای تاریخ سیاسی جهان اسلام داشته است. به نوعی همان کلیدی که استادم بیان کرده بود را برای مفصل تر و مشروحتر توضیح داد.
من که خیلی استفاده کردم.
البته اگر زیاد با تاریخ معاصر خاورمیانه آشنایی ندارید به عنوان کتاب اول شاید ذهنتان را خیلی درگیر کند و گیج کننده باشد. چون با موجی از اسامی افراد و احزاب و کشورها مواجه میشوید. اما اگر با تاریخ معاصر جهان اسلام شناخت خوبی دارید این کتاب میتواند یک منظر جدید برای شما داشته باشد.

Contiene e qualche bias e a tratti non è invecchiato benissimo (penso ad esempio alla sottovalutazione del genocidio armeno), tuttavia traccia in modo completo e analitico lo sviluppo politico e civile delle società arabe nel corso del secolo scorso.
È anche diviso molto bene, il che rende il suo utilizzo per studio semplice.
