In a few days, Laila will be flying home to visit her family for Christmas. But she's finally sitting down to a nice dinner with Daniel, the cute paramedic. But before they can get two bites in, a scream echoes from the kitchen. There's a dead Santa in the freezer that the repairman just unlocked!
The owner of the restaurant is now the prime suspect, and probably guilty as far as Laila is concerned. But, he's Daniel's best friend, so, for Daniel's sake, Laila sets out to prove the owner innocent. But she's not sure that's even possible, especially when he kisses her when Daniel leaves -yuck!
And besides all of that, she needs to find the perfect gift for Daniel. Ugh! Christmas is anything but peaceful as Laila faces some unsavory characters, bad cologne, a stinky tavern, and a large stack of cash in a dead man's closet that would tempt anybody.
Well, normally I don't mind a good cosy mystery, but unfortunately this one was far from good. The reader really has to suspend their disbelief, and in this case, it was just too much. I mean, what Chief of Police would welcome the help of a barista telling him how to run his investigation, let alone listen in on police interviews. All because she gave him a few truffles...
I got a really nice surprise when I finished reading the previous book in the series, it popped up that I already had this book in my kindle library! My need for instant gratification was instantly taken care of. This book was just as good as the first one. The character and settings are wonderful. The story is really good. I felt disappointed when I found out Daniel and Laila were each going somewhere else for Christmas but I got over that. You will have to read the book to find out why... There is a lot of action and excitement, and I often get tired just by reading about Laila's day and all of the running around she does. I think one of the best things about this book is Cheif Hayes, how he treats Laila and welcomes her take on everything. I. love these books and want to learn what is in store for the characters.
I'm sure that it must be difficult to write a book. The author should be given 1 star for finishing the book and one star for writing one without any cuss words and/or bloody gore in a murder mystery. After all, this is a cozy mystery and not a police procedural. That said, I am giving 2 stars for this book.
Beyond that, this book was totally forgettable. It was flat, boring and unbelievable. What Chief of Police would talk over an on-going murder investigation with a barista, just because she gave him a box of cookies and truffles? How would it be possible that the investigators would forget to go the victim's house and search it? I realize that a reader has to sometimes suspend belief in order for the book to flow and come to a conclusion, but this book asks way too much of the reader. If I were you, I would pass this book up for a more interesting read.
Hot Coffee, Iced Santa (A Roasted Love Cozy Mystery Book 2)
I liked the story line which is mystery murder. It got a little slow at first but after the initial murder, things began to go a bit faster. I like Laila, the main character. Her sleuthing was far from amateur. She got into quite a lot of trouble but hey, read this book to find out what happened. This is a great story, no bad language and dogs are part of the story, which I liked. Excited to read another mystery by this author. God bless, have a great upcoming Christmas!👍🏻
Hmmmmm, a pretty good addition to the series. The writing style takes a little getting used to but the characters were sweet. As far as M/F romance goes, I usually dislike the female MC, but I quite liked Laila. I'm interested to see where this series goes. 3/5 stars.
This was a really fun book. What I enjoy the most is that Laila isn't a business owner like so many cozy mystery protagonists are. Though she doesn't slack at her job, she has plenty of free time to investigate what happened and the timing makes sense. She's written to have a very keen eye and learns quite quickly. She is also very mindful of the evidence, which is lacking in many cozy mystery books.
The murder was interesting and complex which was fun. It was more of a real mystery that wasn't clear cut as most.
Overall, it was a good book that was very interesting.
This is the second in the Roasted Love Cozy Series. The protagonist, Laila, works as a Barista in a Coffee Shop called Roasted Love. When Laila and her boyfriend Daniel go out for dinner at the restaurant of an old friend of Daniel's, they do not get to finish their meal. Hearing screams from the kitchen, Laila and Daniel rush into the kitchen to find a dead and frozen Santa in the walk in freezer. When his friend is suspected of the deed, Daniel asks Laila to help clear him. Daniel heads off to his family's home for Christmas and leaves Laila to work with the local police to find the culprit. I found the mystery interesting but the rest of the story was hard to take. First, the police were far to generous with sharing information with the amateur sleuth, second the sleezy behaviour of the friend left a bad taste in my mouth and was just left with no resolution and third, the murderer wanted to kill Laila, but all he does is tell her to give up her snooping? Not strong writing in my book. It was okay, but I probably will not go out of my way to read another in this series.
Hmm the 2nd in a nice series, I do find the writing style a little stilted and sluggish but the story line more that makes up for that!
This time our favourite Barista, Laila, is out for a meal with her boyfriend, Daniel, when things go very, very wrong with a frozen Santa in the restaurant walk in freezer. Daniel cannot believe his old friend could murder someone and so Daniel and Laila step up to help the Police find the Santa killer before Christmas comes!
I would have preferred to give this mystery 2 1/2 stars. The female protagonist works in a coffee shop and has a boyfriend who leaves town for the holidays. While he is gone he has asked her to help clear his friend who is a suspect in the murder of the dishwasher at his restaurant.
Leila investigates another murder, this one involves a friend of her boyfriend Daniel. Steven makes a plausible suspect ...but Daniel is sure he is innocent, so Lelia sets out to find out
First time reading this author. Interesting plot and characters. Lagged a bit in the middle and the solving of the murder, but still a good effort. I plan to read more by this author. Thank you Ms Larson.
Kind-of milquetoast. Can't believe the chief of police would be so forth coming to a civilian. And that a murderer would have been rougher to this Barista.
