His Problem Alpha

Rate this book
A sarcastic omega. A brooding alpha. One heat that ruins everything.

Devon has perfected the art of hating his roommate. Alex is everything he can't stand—brooding, messy, and the kind of alpha who blasts death metal just to piss him off. They've spent over a year in a carefully choreographed dance of mutual loathing.

What Devon doesn't know? Alex has been fighting his obsession from day one, using their arguments to keep from doing something stupid—like confessing he's completely addicted to his sharp-tongued roommate who sees straight through his bullshit.

Until Devon's suppressants fail at the worst possible moment, and suddenly they're both burning with everything they've been denying.

Alex shouldn't want to stay. He definitely shouldn't touch. But when the omega he's been craving for months needs him, there's no going back.

Weeks of pretending it's "just biology." One very real connection. Two roommates who can't tell where the hate ends and the obsession begins.

His Problem Alpha is a steamy and angsty 50k omegaverse quick-read novel featuring enemies-to-lovers, mutual pining disguised as hatred, an unexpected heat, heat partners who catch feelings, knotting, accidental pregnancy, and a happily ever after that starts with "I hate you" and ends with forever. Contains Mpreg.

This novel contains some themes that may be difficult for some readers. Please read the content description inside.

Events occur after those of His Weekend Alpha with some references, but can be read as a standalone.

I'm honestly having troubles rating this book.
The story was beautiful: two roommates who've been at each other's throats for 18 months, each of them with his own work problems and complicated pasts, find themselves very close when an emergency hits.

Alex is a very reserved Alpha, he spends a lot of time alone in his room working on his music, he only has hookups, never a steady boyfriend.
Devon, an omega, is a graphic designer, trying to build his own client list. It's hinted that he's not being very lucky in love and he finds Alex very attractive even if he can't stand him.

They get to to the breaking point when Devon's suppressants stop working and he goes into a very rough and sudden heat: he asks Alex to help him, as a heat partner, but Alex is very reticent about it because he doesn't want to get too close to Devon.
After a bit of convincing, he helps him and they spend Devon's heat together, connecting in a wonderful way.
The descriptions of the first sex scenes were very emotional and I loved them.
I also adored how they got close after the pregnancy scare, how deep and strong their intimacy was.

What prevented me from giving a higher rate:
This story definitely needs a better beta reading and editing.
There are inconsistencies and plot holes in the timeline of the events (about their job deadlines, how many days pass between an event and another, Alex and Ethan's ages not clear, ecc..) and in the events themselves: for example Alex packing a bag and leaving, then coming back home the same afternoon; Devon dropping a test on the floor and packing his toothbrush while in the next scene the toothbrush is on the floor and his toothbrush is on the sink; Alex never reading Devon's note; Lawson telling Alex where Devon is, then being surprised at Alex's arrival; them not using protection after the first scare. And so on...

It's also full of repetitions: the sex scenes are almost all the same, the author uses the same sentences over and over to describe Alex's words during sex, their feeling, their emotions, their scents, the way Alex marks and scents Devon. Without all this repetitions, the story would have been way shorter.

The end was also disappointed, I don't know why the author gave them just a HFN and ended the story . And, above all, why didn't they mate?

We'll see if the author will write another book that'll include Devon and Alex was secondary characters, letting us know more about them.

This book had a great start, but it never truly reached its full potential.

I really loved the beginning, I thought the whole enemies part was very well done. The author also tried to give some back story to one of her MC, which was written interestingly right up until the moment we discover what really happened.

However the book quickly became smut - and the sex was very, very repetitive. I wish we had seen the MCs' relationship bloom in a way that was different than sex. It was like 'yes, we have sex, therefore we've started to like each other'. I also have a problem with what happens after the revelation of Alex's back story: it felt a bit too dramatical, too exaggerated. Maybe if we had seen more effects of his trauma on him, it would've made more sense. The ending was also done very quickly and felt unearned.

Lastly, but not leastly, this book needs to be re-edited. There are some grave mistakes, plot wise, such as .

Edited: actually, no. I’m lowering it to 2. Because there’s a lot of other books I enjoyed that were written much better than this one that I need to give a 3 to because they’re still not as good as my beloved 4s, so there’s no way I can let this one sit on the same level as all those other 3s. So to 2 this goes. Sorry, book. I did enjoy reading you somewhat. But yikes.

A fast fun read but just average in writing. Some of the spicy scenes were fun, but some of the overall writing and continuity was just plain awful. I’m tempted to give it less than 3 stars but honestly 3 is indicative of average, and it seems most books these days are, on average, right around where this one is. So for now I guess I’ll leave it at 3.

Was really digging it at first, til some of the timeline inconsistencies caught my attention; unfortunately for me if I start seeing issues I’m like a bloodhound on a scent, just can’t let anything go. Things I would’ve let slide initially I become hyperfocused on instead.

I also found myself wondering if it was AI. Some of the patterns of speech/style made me think it. And once that idea was in my head I couldn’t unsee it. Couldn’t bring myself to read the rest of it thinking that. To be clear, I’m not positive of this. But any hint of AI in writing turns me off, and HARD. There’s so much to read, so little time, why waste precious hours on possibly-probably computer-generated drivel?

More obviously AI writing.

This book had a lot of promise and I loved the scenario of it. First few chapters were decent.

Then the AI repetition started happening. Every other paragraph a variation of one of the main character's "world shattering", "not what he thought it'd be. Not like this. Never like this", run-on, repetitive loops of writing that's painfully indicative of AI slop.

I don't mind authors that use AI as a tool to get around writer's block, but it shouldn't be the catapult for every page.

I really didn't know if these two were trying to convince each other or themselves that the sex they had meant nothing, but deep down they both know better. A nice Alpha/Omega with an 'I hate you but I like you vibe going on, that is until a major heat takes Devon by surprise. It's a really lovely story with their mix of emotions, but then a nasty part of Alex's past rears its head and throws him into shear panic.

I hate it!

I hate that Alex brought his hookups to their apartment; Devon heard the sound they were making and saw Alex's hookups out of his bedroom looking thoroughly fucked even though they were pining for each other, and the epilogue was not good enough for me. I felt like Alex was still on a trial basis with Devon, and there were no "I love yous" between them.

I really liked this story. only reason I gave it a 4 was I would've liked a bit more of a conclusion for the end of the book, such as Alex' 1st therapy session, or his reunion with his parents, or even Devon meeting Alex' parents, and birth (off or on page) with Baby's name. other than the ending the rest of the book was good. lots of angst and lots of smut.

intriguing

Devon & Alex definitely had some anxiety to get over in order to get there happily ever after. They each had their own obstacles to overcome from their past.
