Rate this book
The most powerful warlock in the world, Adair Finch, has drawn the ire of a sociopathic wizard.

While building up his PI agency, Finch’s sister-in-law, Jessica, comes to him with a major problem. She cheated the wizard, Maldonado, an infamous demonologist known for his crime dealings, and now he wants Jessica dead.

Determined to help Jessica, as well as a few others around town, all within a single 24-hour period, Finch must make a new pact with a creature that can defeat Maldonado’s infernal magic. Unfortunately, very few creatures can do that, and all of them want something drastic in return.

Luckily, Finch has made some new allies—a werewolf, a YouTube star, a budding witch, a vampire attorney, and even a reluctant duergar. With their help, finding Maldonado and ending his criminal operations doesn’t seem as impossible as before.

But navigating the supernatural world isn’t as easy as Finch remembers, and the monster who killed his brother is lurking just around the corner…

Another killer story with Adair Finch!
This third installment in the Chronos Chronicles is even better than the last book and I didn't think that was possible.
We have Adair, Enzo, Liam and Bree back and get a couple of newer characters as well, although Kull isn't a main character this time, she gets a cameo. Jessica is a witch and also Adair's sister in law who he hasn't been in contact with for years. She's in trouble with a big bad, evil wizard and of course, Adair is tasked to get her out of it. He may be in over his head with this one and the tension shows....it will take all his power and smarts, to get them all out safely.
This has a couple of cool side quests in it and my fav is Bree investigating her witch heritage with Jessica. Bree has wanted to be a warlock like Adair but now that she's learning about types of witches and their power (from Jessie) she's learning that she can embrace that side of herself.
Of course....there is an animal rescue because we all love that! Methusapaws is an elderly feline and she is awesome. No animal gets left behind! lol
This author has the right formula for this amazing urban fantasy series. I hope they just keep coming because I will continue to keep reading!
My rating is 4.5

24-Hour Warlock is a satisfying and action-packed culmination to the trilogy, revealing even more about the intricate world of Adair Finch and his companions. The layers of magic, time, and character development deepen beautifully in this third installment, giving readers a greater understanding of the stakes and the complex workings of this universe.

While it wraps up key threads from the first two books, it also plants plenty of seeds for future adventures—leaving the door wide open for more, and making it clear that this world has much more to offer.

Just like with the first two, I devoured this book and now find myself once again wishing I could manipulate time… if only to jump ahead to the release of the next one!

Marvelous!

I'll start it off by saying I absolutely love this series. Book 3 is another smash hit in my opinion. This book hooked my attention, just like the previous titles, and kept it until the very end. Yet again I'm reminded of my love for magical detectives and this series scratches that itch. I can't wait for more of Adairs adventures. I thoroughly enjoyed the villain and the set up for the next book was top notch.

fantastic read

Shami has created a wonderful world with her warlock series. I’ve loved all 3, and 24 hour warlock is my absolute favorite of the 3. Her characters are varied and suit my taste. We start with an adult and a young teen. And keep adding. The personalities of her characters are satisfying. I.e, good people with good intentions battling crime and bad people. And saving the little guys, whether they be human or animal, magical or not. And she set up book four so well and I’m anxious for her to stop writing any other series and just create more warlock stories!

This series is so consistently amazing! I absolutely loved this story, just as much as the first two in this series! The characters are all just so fun and unique, and I really really love reading about them and all of their ventures! I can't wait for more books in this series! And as always, the audiobook was incredible!

Shami Stovall Delivers Another Warlock Win

24-Hour Warlock by Shami Stovall is a masterclass in smooth, simply satisfying storytelling ✨‍♂️📖. This latest adventure of Adair Finch, Warlock extraordinaire, is another rambunctious ride 🎢 with the usual gang trying to solve a particularly prickly problem 🧩. From the tone of the writing ✍️ to the characters 🧙‍♂️, the relationships 💫, and the twists and turns 🔄 — everything is simply and wonderfully written 🌟. The author is slowly building out the larger world of Adair Finch, and the pacing of that is just right ⚖️.

I particularly enjoyed the good guys bulldozing over the bad guys 💥. Especially that last villain takedown — supremely satisfying! 😈➡️💀 I’m at that point in life where I’m no longer interested in the ‘pain and suffering’ part of the hero’s journey 😩➡️🙅‍♂️. Just give me the wins ✅ and the magic ✨.

This book fully upholds my belief that Shami Stovall is a truly special writer of this generation 🏆📚. She has the gift 🎁.

These only get better! Almost a cozy urban fantasy. the magic system is simple yet very complex with a high degree of customizability that we see even more of in this book. Can't wait to see where this series goes!

The story wastes no time, throwing readers right into the action thanks to the excellent groundwork laid in earlier books. While that momentum is welcome, this installment felt looser than the tightly woven plots of its predecessors. Adair’s overwhelming power also shifted the tone toward cozy fantasy rather than the more dangerous, high-stakes feel of the earlier books. That said, the journey was still fun, and the setup for the next installment was handled beautifully. By the end, I felt a renewed excitement for what’s to come.

Compared to the previous entries, this installment carries less emotional weight for much of the story. While the last three chapters land with powerful, memorable impact, the payoff feels a bit delayed. Still, those final moments deliver enough intensity to close the book on a strong note and leave me eager for what’s next.

Characters remain one of Shami Stovall’s greatest strengths. This book brings back a wide cast of favorites while also introducing new faces, most notably Jessica, Adair’s sister-in-law, who adds fresh energy to the group. That said, the absence of a central duo—like Bri and Adair in book one or Kull and Adair in book two—made the character dynamics feel less sharp this time around. Instead, 24-Hour Warlock plays more like “Adair and everyone,” which spreads the focus thinner. Even so, the recurring side characters continue to shine, and the conclusion involving Kull was especially satisfying.

Shami’s prose continues to sparkle with witty observations and clever commentary on the absurdities of modern life. The humor and sharpness in the dialogue are reliable highlights of this series, keeping the tone fresh even when the plot softens.

The worldbuilding remains as strong as ever. The core system of magic is elegant, versatile, and consistent, easily supporting the wide variety of magical archetypes—warlocks, witches, and wizards alike. It provides just enough structure to keep the rules clear while leaving plenty of room for creativity and surprises.

24-Hour Warlock may not pack the same emotional punch or tight plotting as the earlier books in the series, but it remains an enjoyable, character-driven story full of clever dialogue and imaginative magic. The addition of Jessica is a highlight, the returning cast continues to shine, and the ending—especially with Kull—was deeply satisfying. While this entry leans more cozy than dangerous, it sets the stage for future books in an exciting way.

Even though I loved the story, there are a few things I need to comment on.

First of, this book didn't have enough Kull. I love Kull. She was my favorite character in the second book. The way started to learn how to be a human, the hilarious mistakes she made, the things she said that made Adair blush :-)
Though Enzo's sarcastic humor made up for it - just a bit - it wasn't enough.

Just like in the first two book, every time Adair rewinds time, it is described in detail. The first two times, okay, that's necessary to explain it. But every time after that, I think it's enough to just say he activated his magic and rewound time. We don't need to read how everything stops, the colors fade, everything turns black and white, ect. ect.

In the first two books, Adair pulls a hand over his face every other page it seems. It read it so many times, it started to annoy me.
Thankfully we don't have that anymore in the third book. Unfortunately, it's now replaced with Adair saying everything sardonically. He doesn't speak with a normal voice, a quiet voice, an angry voice. No, he speaks apparently only sardonically. That was even more annoying than pulling a hand over his face.

And, finally, I got the feeling the writer had this idea for a book, found out the other books were popular and rushed to get this book finished.
I counted at least three sentences that were missing a word.
A few parts that seemed to make no sense.
Sentences that didn't run smoothly.
It felt almost as if an AI was used to write certain parts.

Having said that, I do really enjoyed the story. The characters are developing (though I still don't care much for Liam), the bad guy was a proper challenge, there was a nice dynamic between Adair and Jessica, his sister-in-law.
And I always love how many things Adair has to do in one day, making other question how he does it all. And how it always seems to involve an animal that needs rescuing (and yes, Methusapaws is the perfect name for an elderly cat)

I can't wait to read more about Adair Finch. And Kull. Mostly Kull :-)

First of all...I loved this story. I am so thoroughly entranced by these characters, the magic system, the found family dynamic, and the ethics that are represented in these novels.

Secondly, this has become my addendum/replacement for my favourite Urban Fantasy series, The Dresden Files. Not that I'll ever not love them, this is one that I came in on...at the very beginning, so there's pride in what you've accomplished, and that I have experienced...to be able to tell others to pick it up for themselves (with confidence).

Who would've thought that the Groundhog Day setup would be such a great magic power? I love the use of it in the movies, and other mediums, but it has never been used as well as it is being done in this series. Kudos.

Adair Finch is kind and thoughtful. He's powerful and effective, without being arrogant and obnoxious. He's got a past that haunts him, and is gathering a "found family" that he will protect and guide to be better and live up to his standards.

Enzo is also a great character. Love their dynamic together. He's a stablizing force, though he really shouldn't be. I think they help each other.

Kull is a chaotic being, but one that shakes things up. I missed her in this story, but also know that there will be many other stories in this series (I hope).

Bree is also a breath of fresh air, but I foresee struggles and temptations in her path. She's made a very important choice in her life...and not taken the easy road, but one that will test her resolve. I cannot wait to see what is going to happen, next.

Thank you for sharing your imagination with us (readers).

You have become an "automatic buy" author for me (and hopefully, others).

TL;DR Review: Bigger, badder, and better! The stakes keep rising, and our hero rises with them.

Full Review:
Adair Finch (now with more friends included!) is back in action with a bigger, wilder, and more magical adventure.
In 24-Hour Warlock, Adair finally confronts his dead brother’s wife, Jessie, and has a chance to talk about everything that’s been building up within him in the ten years since his brother’s death. Only before he can, Jessie asks for his help confronting a wizard who’s marked her for death and has come to Stockton hunting her.
In true white-knight fashion, Adair agrees to take the case—which quickly turns violent and bloody, leading him to approach the investigation in a whole new way.
24-Hour Warlock took everything we know and love about Adair and his time-marking/rewinding abilities, and dialed it all up to 11 with new threats, new challenges, new foes, new magics, and higher stakes than ever.
For the first time, Adair is in real personal danger, and we get to see a bit of his more violent side as he confronts the threats around him. We’re also treated to a look at the world at large—not just the abilities of wizards vs. warlocks and witches, but also special magical government organizations that might one day be a problem for our favorite warlock for hire.
The character work, as always, is spectacular, with Adair’s complex and messy relationship with Jessie being front-and-center. However, the dynamic between Enzo and Bree, Adair and Bree, and even Bree and her father is delightful. Adair’s young apprentice is, as always, a true delight, and makes Adair so much more of a relatable character every time he makes space for her or tries to connect with her even when he’s terrible at it.
And let me tell you, the book wraps up with a banger of an ending. The stakes get crazy high, and there’s so much set up with this ending that promises bigger and better things for the next books in the series. I, for one, can’t wait!

I'm so glad I remembered to come back to this series and I'm so peeved that book four isn't out yet and I therefore have to wait impatiently for the series to continue. This is honestly absolutely brilliant. This takes everything that made the first two books great and builds on it, offering up a tight narrative, great characters and all the chaotic hijinks that a time travelling warlock can bring to the table.

Another day and Adair Finch has another case, only this one is far closer to home. When his late brother's wife turns up at his business asking for help as she's got into a spot of bother with a homicidal wizard, Finch steps into action. As the books have gone on, Finch has built up his own group of misfits and found family and they all absolutely leap off the page at you here; I particularly love Bree and Enzo, and look forward to Kull playing a larger part in the next book.

There's threat and tension here despite Adair's unique ability to turn back time. He's on the spot and tested and forced into confrontations he might not survive unscathed. There's a strong main plot hook and then multiple threads that are also followed through well. Some of the different results of Adair's choices were highly entertaining and moved it away from the Groundhog Day feel that everything stays the same.

All in all, an excellent novel and I hungrily await number four.

Looking at the past and moving on

I loved, loved the latest installment of this magical detective series with a side of buddy comedy. It had a layered storyline, witty dialogue, an intriguing problem to solve, surprising plot twists, and suspense. I was equally desperate to read it all at once to solve Jessie’s dilemma and also to savor it and make it last. Adair Finch is the most powerful warlock in the world and one of the best private investigators for hire. When his brother died, he retired from PI work and stopped living his life but he’s recently joined the world again including opening a new detective agency. He is visited by his sister-in-law, Jessie, who he has not seen in the decade since his brother’s death. She is a witch that is now bound with a demon, has government agents looking for her, and she needs Adair’s help. The interactions and juxtaposition between grumpy put upon Adair, vibrant and innocent Bree, nerdy and cautious Liam, and angry protective Enzo was what really made this story so very good. The character arc for all of them was wonderful despite the story being about poor choices and painful pasts. I cannot say enough about how much I loved this story, these characters and this series. I need more of these characters in my life.

Stovall never disappoints. This entire series is up there on my list of favorite fantasies of all time. The series isn't even done yet but I trust Shami is taking me somewhere great. She's never led me wrong. It takes a lot to make my eyes water or to make me cry over a book. But I was tearing up at the end where Bree transitions into her new role. It was so dang sweet and heartfelt. Then she followed that scene up involving another one of my favorite characters, Kull, and made me tear up again because it, again, was so dang sweet.

For the record, I'm ready to ship Kull and Adair as a couple. Hahaha! Even if it doesn't end up that way, I'm so excited to see where this story goes next. Although...we have a hint. Time to avenge Carter and I'm here for it.

I have good word that we may see the next title in the series this November. I'm eager to read the next entry. Highly recommended for lovers of fantasy and/or mystery. I'm gifting the entire series to at least two people I know, if that shows you how much I love it. I have to share it with someone I know. Or maybe, someone(s). Go pick this up!

Okay - out of all of this series so far, this is my favourite installment to date. To the point I had to pause, compose myself and message some people because the short laughing was for real.
By now, we have a fully operational PI firm once again. The crew - just keeps getting larger and they bring their own spins to how things play out. Finch sure has a team with him at this point that is going to do his soul some good....because....

Things are about to get so real. Family from the past is back, and we have some trauma to work through. We have Enzo, our cursed furry friend who just keeps getting funnier, Bree who is making some very life altering and mature decisions, all the while while we miss seeing our trickster for the majority of this installation comes back onto the scene in a BIG way.

This cast, and how they navigate a very dangerous and magical world does it in such a cool way. November feels so far away now, because honestly - I'd be reading that one right now immediately if I had the ability. This next one is gonna be so gooooooooooood.

Interesting bad guys, (and good guys), terrific plot unravelling.

Urban fantasy often suffers from a lot of same-same. Each story has different characters, different weapons, different bad guys, but a lot of time, the same sort of plot.

Our warlock MC is still the sorta-gruff guy with a kitten interior, and a complete disregard for wasting bad guys, like most detective noir. Now, thanks to his tween ‘apprentice’ and a kind spirit, he’s finding himself saving stray waifs and people. Strangely, he’s not unhappy about it.

Where the story becomes unusual is our PI’s abilities and the author’s way of unwinding the plot. The author has a couple of traps laid for him for next book … it will be fun to see if he can wiggle out of them - or if he even wants to do so.

The whole series is enchanting and spunky, but still not afraid to get down in the dirt. Well done, Ms. Stovall.

I really enjoyed this book. The premise of trying to solve a problem by doing it in increments and then turning back time to redo in the best order really works for me.
Adair’s ex sister-in-law (Jessica) is being chased by killers sent by a wizard because of a demon bond. She can’t get out of the deal without dying so she hopes that Adair can help. She also wants his help in finally catching and killing the witches who killed his brother (her husband).
Enzo, Bree and Liam have fairly major rolls in this book although Kull is only around for a couple of phone calls.
There is also a mundane job of serving papers that Bree agreed to, a vampire lawyer who wants something and a member of Shadow (paranormal FBI) who are also after Jessica.
There is action, interesting magic and time travel, great characters, surprises and humour.
This is a fast reading, enjoyable book and I sure hope that there are more adventures to come.
It’s a great series.

How to battle a wizard

After Bree insisting, Finch agreed to open his new PI agency. And as it seems, one of his first clients are none other than his sister-in-law. Hunted by a powerful Mexican wizard Maldonado, Adair Finch will need all hands on deck from his new team to have even the slightest chance to success, while having a few side jobs on the line as usual...
Each book in the series just gets better. Maldonado as a villain was a really interesting and powerful character, and searching for his weakness was a great challenge. I liked the teamwork in this story, although slightly missing Kull but her eventual appearance did not disappoint. The magic was fascinating, and I very much appreciated having the Aztec gods and mythology as part of the story. Now with all the loose ties, more challenges are coming to Adair's doorstep.

This was such a wonderful read! Adair has started his PI company again. He has 'underlings' who are really his friends around him and a new situation to solve. We learned so much in this book about Adair and his past, but in a non-confrontatinal way and with humor and wit. It was such a joy to get to know these characters more and meet a new one. The author, again, does a wonderful job balancing the dark of the storyline with the lightness of the characters and their banter.

While the ending was satisfying in its own way, it absolutely leaves you wanting more of these characters, their stories, and this world. I can't wait to see what Adair and company get up to in the future.

“They’re cooking something here,” Enzo whispered, his nose wrinkled. “Like pasta?” “Like meth.” Finch groaned..."

24-Hour Warlock by Shami Stovall is the third book in "The Chronos Chronicles" series. This series is Urban Fantasy with a unique twist. The twist is that Adair Finch, a Warlock, can reset time up to 24 hours. As he is a private detective, he can reset time when he needs more time finding clues for his cases or when he has too much trouble or is in too much danger. He has an ex-cop partner who is also a werewolf. His apprentice is a 12-year-old girl whose father, also a Warlock, assists in solving his cases.
In this one, his sister-in-law who has been M.I.A. for 10 years suddenly shows up needing help. Unfortunately, she has been partially possessed by a demon and has the Feds and a powerful Wizard/Crime Boss after her. This is a fun and action-packed series, and I highly recommend it!

After ten years blaming himself for his brother’s death and hiding from the world, Adair now finds himself running a supernatural private investigation firm, with a fancy offices and several employees (if not yet any clients). And now his brother’s wife needs his help. Can he save her from the evil wizard and maybe even track down the witches who killed his brother? Only time will tell. Luckily, that is the one thing he has plenty of.

I really enjoyed this book, the third book in the Chronos Chronicles. It has humour, heart, mystery, mayhem, found family, and redemption. All of the characters are interesting and three-dimensional. I look forward to reading more of this series when the next book is released.

A mix of Dresden and Groundhog Day, this book was a lot of fun and I highly recommend it.

Another Banger

This series just keeps on rockin’ and rollin’. I’m a sucker for a good time loop story, and Shami Stovall has hit on the perfect formula to capture my interest with each installment. You got your hook that leads to the main conflict for the novel, you got a few side quests that crop up along the way, and you have the inevitable perfect run where Finch solves everyone’s problems effortlessly in a single afternoon, at least from the perspective of those outside the loop. We’re also steadily making progress on the overarching plot to avenge his brother’s murder while expanding our crew at the agency. I truly enjoyable read!!!

I have absolutely loved all of Shami’s books, and this one is just another reason I will shout her praises to the world!

Adair Finch is the greatest warlock in the world and for good reason. With his pact with Chronos, he can reset time for a 24-hour period. I loved the storyline, and the found family he has around him make everything so much better. I love that all of them are looking out for the best interest of all the people and creatures they encounter, sometimes to Adair’s dismay. Bree is the perfect sunshine to Adair’s grumpy demeanor. I am now waiting (im)patiently for the next book!

I am HOOKED on this series! I love how Finch's trusted group of friends is (reluctantly) growing. His character has developed amazingly since book one. I also really enjoyed how he used his time magic in this book, a little different of a method since this one isn't a race-against-the-clock mystery, just a really big problem he has to solve, plus some seemingly random side quests along the way that wrap up really nicely. Already excited for more books in this series!

I wish Adair could use his powers to allow me to read this again for the first time, it was that good!

Totally redeems the past book which had some hiccups, and sets up for what is going to be an epic fourth book. Not in a 'better tune in next time' but more of a 'all loose ends here tied up, here is a new chapter starting'.

I really like this book series so far. I truly enjoy that most of it is really low stakes so you get to see more about the character interaction while still having mysteries to solve. I'm really curious about Bree's father's realization when he finally puts together the time manipulation with how much Bree defaults to Finch. I imagine at some point he's probably going to go, "how... how long did Finch take care of Bree during that first case? How much time has ACTUALLY passed for her? What happened during that time?"
