I picked up this book solely because it came up when I was looking for 15 Dogs and I liked the cover (I mean look at it).

It’s a collection of sometimes loosely connected stories with Solomon being a thread that binds it all. The stories are all a little weird and have that particular sense of humor that’s a little dark and a little cheeky which I tend to find particularly delightful. There’s some quite pointed yet not hamfisted commentary in there which I was also absolutely here for.

There’s a Trevor that briefly becomes a Travis in one story, Dear Mr. Downs, the fates are trying to tell you that writing a Trevor is not a good thing, or maybe they are trying to reach you about your car’s extended warranty, I’m not sure. -Sincerely a reader that hates all characters named Trevor on general principle. Le nombre de Trevor dans ce paragraphe dépasse tous les autres Trevor que tu as pu connaître si bien que je n’ai jamais dit autant de fois le nom Trevor dans une seule phrase, Trevor (there’s like 1 person here who will get that reference but as the French (québécois) would say; c’est ça qui est ça).

It’s been a minute since I finished reading this book and I still miss having it in my currently reading rotation.

Sometimes you want to read something fun, rather light-hearted, and Fifteen Eyes is perfect for those times. In the frame story Solomon Northcutt transcribes the deaths of the owners of fifteen eyeballs for his boss in fifteen short stories with a streak of weird, a sense of off-ness, but always fun.

Though I liked them all, Method, the story of a shape shifter who joins a theater club to learn how to literally “be” someone else, and Seventh House which follows a man who lies about his zodiac sign ending up in an astrology cult were my absolute standouts.

I'm not usually a fan of short story collections, but this is one that makes me realize that I need to change my thoughts on them. It's a really great collection of crazy and ceepy stories. I liked the wrap-around story with Solomon and how that
ended, and I definitely want more from Solomon,
so I'll be patiently awaiting his return.

I loved all the stories in here they pulled me in, and I just had to finish them. My absolute favorite stories were The Gate of lcarus, Lonesome Lake, Anthill, Rotten Fruit, and Seventh House.

I'm definitely looking forward to some more from Tyler.

Beware! This debut horror collection is dangerous: totally immersive and completely addictive, you gonna forget to breathe! What's more, the stories actually feel like genuine nightmares: from the get go, the surprising visuals (a naked man cooking in an office's communal kitchen; a black-eyed ten-year-old girl holding a cigarette - to mention just a few in the very first pages, without spoiling anything) combine with an incomparable sense of unease - and this only increases as the tales get more and more complex, more and more intense! It's a reading experience I've very rarely had with a collection, this feeling of subtle recognition ("it feels like a dream I had"), the hammer dropping left and right ("how did he come up with this?"), the imagery so unnerving (eyes opening on an arm, a hand offering a cube out of a closet, spider legs crawling out of a severed head), the night terrors atmosphere ("welp, I think I'm in a nightmare!") - the cover with the fifteen eyeballs was just a bonus!

Avoiding spoilers, I'll mention my top five stories, stories worth the price of the collection alone: "Method," a stunning tale of intricate body horror, whose premise was very much reminiscent of the obscure 2013 Scarlett Johansson horror film Under the Skin; "Lonesome Lake," an incredibly suspenseful story of online dating going wrong, whose ambiguities are integral part of the plot; "Anthill," an excellent deployment of the creepy child trope; "Happy," a brilliant, sinister version of Up for horror fans; and "Seventh House," a darkly humorous trip of astrology satire and cult horror with cosmic horror overtones.

If you're into horror as a way to work through your fears, well forget it - this book will even give you some new ones! Highly, very highly recommended!

I picked up Fifteen Eyes already interested just from the cover. Eyes always get me. I also really enjoy short story collections, so this felt like something I’d have a good time with, and I did.

What really worked for me was the structure. Solomon guiding you through the stories ended up being something I appreciated more than I expected. It gave the book a sense of continuity that made it easier to sink into, even when each story went in a different direction.

There are fifteen stories total, and I liked a lot of them. Method, Missing, Machine, and Happy were the ones that pulled me in right away. But The Gates of Icarus, Seventh House, and Paradise were the clear standouts for me. Those are the stories I kept going back to in my head after I finished.

As I was reading, I found it easy to keep going. I didn’t feel the urge to put it down or space the stories out. That doesn’t always happen for me with collections, so I noticed it here. I liked not knowing what I was going to get next while still feeling grounded in the book.

If you enjoy weird horror and short fiction, this is one I’d recommend. It also gave me Elias Witherow vibes, which made me smile. By the time I finished, I was really glad I’d picked it up

Is Fifteen Eyes one of the best short story collections I've ever read? 👁️ ABSOLUTELY 👁️

Tyler Downs has crafted a collection of tales that feel both fresh and captivating. I devoured each story, and sadly.. did not have to discipline to savor each deliciously horrific bite.

Imagine if Nathan Ballingrud wrote 'Night Shift' while on the set of 'Cabin in the Woods' and then sprinkled it with some magic Clive Barker dust... that's Fifteen Eyes.

Combine a brilliant framework to house these stories (seriously) with some disturbing, heart-wrenching and downright bizarre tales of demise, and you're left with a truly special book.

The contents are broad, ranging from classic monsters to dark fantasy, cosmic horror to the dark depths of humanity. There is something in here for all fans of spooky reads.

Tyler Downs has gifted us an all-time great collection of stories on his FIRST release. He deserves so much accolade, and I hope that everyone picks up a copy of this essential work of horror.

Indie Horror continues to ascend through the emergence of new authors, and I believe Tyler Downs has the talent to be one of the best. You better keep your eyes (all fifteen of them) out for anything he writes.

Fifteen Eyes is one hell of a horror story collection. I felt like I was in a fever dream from start to finish. Really trippy shit. I loved how Solomon brought everything together. This was such a cool concept that the author came up with. I'm happy to see that Solomon will in fact return. Perhaps another short story collection or more of a back story?? Either way, I'm sold.

In the beginning of this collection we meet Solomon. He works in the underworld (which we come to find more about towards the end) He looks into people's last moments via their eye balls. Yes. You read that right. 15 stories of absolute craziness that I am still processing. If you like reading stories that just completely trip you out and leave you feeling confused and just in awe of the length of creativity some authors can go, then this is absolutely the collection for you. This is pretty graphic at times, so if that isn't your cup of tea then this is your warning.

I'm really looking forward to seeing more from this author in the future. Solid work.

I would like to apologize to author Tyler Downs. In the afterword of Fifteen Eyes, he writes: "When I first started putting this collection of stories together, like any delusional first-time author, I assumed I'd have agents and publishers brawling in bloody pits to determine who got their hands n my life-changing work."

Most writers have shared similar aspirations. And for most of us, our first attempts at a published book are awful: manuscripts best left hidden in the dusty corners of old hard drives or in forgotten alcoves in the cloud, never to see the light of day. Those of us who might have braved querying agents or publishers with these pitiful but well-intentioned abominations may reflect upon these efforts in retrospect with sheepish and pained grimaces.

So I'm sorry, Mr. Downs, that you thought industry professionals would be clamoring for the chance to publish your book, and that Fifteen Eyes would become an international bestseller reaping you handsome profits and a lifetime spent writing additional volumes at your literary leisure.

Because it should have.

Fifteen Eyes is amazing. Downs has a level of creative genius I haven't seen in a long time. Just when you think you know where a story is going, he takes a 180-degree twist and wrenches the plot in a whole new, surprising direction. And his writing is phenomenal, his narrative style comfortable and conversational, drawing you in the way a good friend beckoning you closer might, in order to share a secret. And although he touches on dark and disturbing scenes, Downs interlaces much of his work with underlying gallows humor. His subject matter covers the gamut: cosmic, arcane, cryptids, and more. Although each story is a stand-alone work, they're all interconnected through a brilliant plot device: a central character named Solomon who works in what appears to be an office from hell, transcribing stories gleaned from the disembodied eyeballs collected and delivered to his desk.

Downs includes a clever interlude midway through the book that revisits Solomon and his cast of ghoulish fellow corporate drones, and again at the end, when Solomon ties all the stories together in unexpected but brilliantly devised fashion.

And what wonderful, wicked stories these are. There wasn't one in the bunch I didn't enjoy, but my favorites were:

"Rotten Fruit," a dark twist on a tried-and-true creature feature trope, with a historical angle.

"Paradise," an introspective and ultimately melancholic twist on what may await in the afterlife.

"Seventh House," a fable (of sorts) warning against tempting fate with little white lies.

"Happy," a delightfully wicked yarn the curmudgeon in me adored.

"Freak Show," which begs the question "what could possibly terrify the denizens of hell?"

"Anthill," about a group of criminal thugs who have a strange encounter with a most unusual little girl.

"Method," about a young woman who sets her sights on an aspiring actress with malicious but unexpected intent.

Fifteen Eyes is one of those books that makes me wish I had some kind of pull in the universe, or at least in the publishing industry, because although it may be hubris for most writers to say they dreamed of agencies and publishers battling it out for the chance to publish their debut work, in this case, that would have been well earned. This book deserves a mass audience. It's that damn good.

I can't describe how much fun I had reading this. The stories are weird, surreal, hilarious, and horrifying all at once. I will happily read anything this man writes.
Side note: It amazes me that Tyler Downs self-edited this book and it still has fewer typos than most professionally edited novels I've read. Kudos.

Okay, so this was my first experience with this author and I was a little blown away. I normally have at least 1 or 2 stories in an anthology that I didn't like or thought could have been omitted, but this was extremely well done and the tie in between all the stories was brilliant. Fifteen Eyes is Tales from the Crypt for smart kids, and I mean that in the best possible way.

It's very possible to go one way or the other when creating a collection of short stories, where they can be too samey or feel like a hodgepodge of ideas that were thrown together on a whim.

Tyler strikes a perfect balance here, all of his stories are varied and manage to keep you guessing what's next, while still feeling like they're cut from the same cloth.

There's a term that I look for when I'm scanning through reviews, and it's 'literary horror.' I sometimes hesitate to use is it because I don't want to sound like a snob, but I'll use it here. I'll use the term to describe Tyler's writing because he's earned it. This is an excellent book.

I'll go one further for you. There's some writers that I put on pedestal for their short story collections. Authors who hit the exact right notes for me. That list goes Tyler Jones, Nathan Ballingrud and Gage Greenwood. Tyler Downs belongs in that conversation.

It's a fine line between being clever for the sake of showing off and telling a great story that makes a reader feel smarter when they're done.

It's a rare treat to pick up a book by a person you've only heard of here and there and feel like you've discovered a rare gem.

I'm excited to see what's next, whatever it is, I have no doubt that Tyler's going to smash it.

What an outstanding collection.

Tyler Downs is going places. If a publisher doesn’t pick him up at some point, they’re idiots. His prose is punchy, witty, and clean.

This collection is unique, weird, and engaging. I felt like I was reading something new and fresh. My favorite aspect is that every story has something to say. Downs threads in themes like self-image, online dating, and our insignificant motivations in the grand scheme of things. My personal favorites were Method, Lonesome Lake, and Missing.

If you’re looking for something well written and original, look no further than Fifteen Eyes.

There's not really a lot I can say about this book that hasn't already been said by a *lot* of reviewers.

How best to describe Fifteen Eyes? I think Tyler Down's debut can be best summed up as near-classically weird fiction with a decidedly modern twist. Over and over again, across the course of seemingly disparate short tales, the reader is confronted with seemingly everyday events...which then proceed to go south at a very fast pace. The stories blend a mixture of genres; horror, dark humour, even a splash of hard-boiled noir here and there. As something I strive for in my own writing, I particularly appreciated the colloquial, almost conversational stylings of Tyler's (first names are okay, right?) prose, lending proceedings a smooth, easy flow that draws you in. Like I said, a modern take on a classic genre, where you won't see the significance of the connecting interludes, until you do.

An assured, confident debut that marks Tyler Downs as one to watch out for.

I’m still wrapping my head around the fact that this is a debut collection, because this book was fantastic. Easily one of my favorites of the month. There’s something about Mr. Downs’ writing that makes it easy to get lost in his stories. The characters feel grounded and relatable, the horror is genuinely unsettling, and there’s a smart touch of humor woven too.

My favorite stories were:

1. Lonesome Lake - A lonely woman finally puts herself out there… and ends up in a situationship that’s anything but ordinary. Totally eerie and unpredictable. I had no idea where this one was headed.

2. Anthill – A young girl seeks revenge, but she’s no ordinary girl. Gave me total Black-Eyed Kids vibes.

3. Seventh House – When what’s your sign turns into something far more ominous than an annoying small-talk question.

With fifteen stories in this collection, there’s truly something here for every horror fan. If you enjoy character-driven, unsettling tales with just the right amount of dark humor, this book is absolutely worth picking up. Bonus points for that awesome cover!

4.5 stars for this collection of short stories and wonderfully creepy debut.

Our protagonist, Solomon, takes us on a journey through the weird, macabre, and sinister with stories such as Method-a woman goes in search of the next soul to emulate, Anthill-a little girl shows up to the apartment of an unknown man, looking for help, but there’s something odd about her, Third Degree Burns-a man, freshly out of prison, heads to a bar to enjoy his new freedom, but ends up running into a nightmare from his past, Rotten Fruit-men, trekking through the woods, head to a cottage with a mysterious man inside; He has a few secrets of his own.

The story above are my favorites, but I enjoyed every story-along with the intermissions sprinkled throughout. The stories kept me engaged, were paced well, and had varies different horror elements throughout. There’s something in this book for everyone. I also enjoyed the way Tyler wrapped up the ending by letting us know who Solomon is, and why he does his particular job. Horror fans, put this one on your TBR.

this was a really fun read. the stories, although all separate, meshed together quite well and they were all wonderfully written. i enjoyed the character of sol and how we got to see a story of his past towards the end. there were also little blips of humor placed throughout the book that fit perfectly and didn't feel out of place. i'm glad that tyler downs decided to self-publish this and hopefully it opened doors for him to publish other works professionally, not that it's necessary since the quality of this book was already good. really i just want to see deserving authors getting their just rewards, however possible.

This collection was the author's DEBUT - that fact alone completely blows me away;
Each story was unnerving, strange (in the best way), and kept me engaged throughout. I took my time digesting this - and am glad I did.
I LOVED how the author kept coming back to what was the "through-line" of the plot. It made the collection feel much more like one single story from cover to cover. Absolutely fantastic.

Also, the little note/check-in from Tyler at the 50% mark was *chefs kiss*

Stumbled upon this randomly on my Kindle and I love a fast-paced horror book between lengthier/heavier reads. I was immediately drawn in by the cover and had so much fun reading this—ate this up in 24 hours.

So sick and twisted while remaining lighthearted which I loved, and the over arching story connecting everything was what made this 5⭐️ for me. Just a bunch of fever dreams laced together into one lovely nightmare of a book.

My faves were Anthill, Happy & Seventh House. Waiting for whatever you put out next Tyler!

Wow. I am having a hard time putting into words how much I love this book. If you’re a fan of Ray Bradbury, Love Death & Robots, American Horror Story, or Edgar Allen Poe you HAVE to check it out.

Fifteen Eyes is a collection of short stories that have a running narrative that ties them all together. I’ll leave it that so that I don’t spoil the fantastic reveal at the end. This collection offers truly unique bite sized stories that spur the imagination into overdrive.

The immersive writing, the twists, the wit… the entire way through it kept me totally engaged and on the edge of my seat. Tyler Downs has incredible skill, to think this is his first published work is unbelievable!

Crazy and creative short stories!

Solomon works in an underworld office and his job is writing books on how people died. The short stories are fantastic. Most are like crazy and disturbing versions of "the twilight zone" The stories get better as the book goes on. There was one story that might be somewhat offensive to christians, although it does make you think. The man in one short story goes to heaven, but what you must know before reading is that when you go to heaven your mind, body and spirit will change. There is no way you will be bored like the story says. You will experience immense joy and not desire the earth pleasures. It's hard to imagine, but that's what the Bible says.

Fifteen Eyes hosts fifteen short stories; each with wildly different flavors of horror. Some are dread soaked, some blood soaked, some outright stupefying, and some drift straight into fever dream territory. This might as well be a collection of my favorite short stories, tbh.

Tyler Downs crafts fifteen tales that feel like they’re happening on entirely different planets, yet they’re all tethered by one brilliant and unsettling throughline. Every story dropped me into a new world with its own terrifying alternate reality. I didn’t want to step through a single door (eye?), but I savored every one.

The horror swings from obscene body horror (hello, marionettes, my mortal enemy) to the shocking and downright deranged. Some stories simmer with slow building dread; others hit like a freight train.

I usually struggle with collections. I tend to adore a few and side eye the rest (ha). Buy every one of these grabbed me. Sure some resonated more than others, but don’t ask me to pick a favorite. I won’t. I refuse.

Listen, I can't make any sense out of the fact that this is Tyler's first book. Seriously. I was absolutely hooked from story one. The characters and locations are so beautifully written, it is easy to feel like you're right there with them... Despite the fact that one of them has no head. Each story unfolds at exactly the right pace and the endings all hit just right. I can't even complain about any of them. My favorite one, however, was Gates of Icarus. This book moved right up onto my favorites list and I highly recommend you read it
