A very good start to this limited series from 1995 of Nightwing. Interesting to see the character return to his roots.

I’m kicking and screaming but I’m being dragged into the digital comics world. Friends of mine have been doing it for years, but it always seemed to defeat the point of comics - escape! What’s the escape if you’re just sitting in front of the computer, like always!

But there’s an incredible amount of comics available on-line that would be pricey to get hold of even if you could find them….

So I figured I’d start with my favorite hero, Nightwing. He hasn’t always been treated well. Let’s see how this goes.

After a brief bit of action and some seriously 80’s art and hair, Nightwing takes off his clothes and hands his uniform over to Batman. He quits!

After quitting he goes to the hospital to visit the girl he just rescued. Somehow she doesn’t recognize that amazing head of hair. He says he was in the alley with the paramedics. She asks him out for coffee. We already know she makes bad choices with guys.

Alfred comes over to give him paper relating to his parents. Dick looks through then and finds a note that says ii“If you say anything about what you saw, they will kill you and your whole family. Be Warned. Pickles the Clown”./ii

It took me a while to figure this out - the paper looks completely blank on screen!

The note i dated June 23, no year. But Dick figures out that he was in the despotic nation of Kravia at that time, with the circus. So he’s off to investigate. He calls the Kravia embassy.

Which tips off Prince Balsik, a scar-faced and highly decorated person who hires an assassin with the ‘Death Touch’ to clean up a loose end ‘we should have tied off fifteen years ago.’

Meanwhile Dick goes out with “Miggy” and she immediately starts acting like a psycho, wanting to spend the rest of the day with him. When he tells her he’s busy she kisses him desperately.

Dick still blows her off and the assassin, named “Goode Ole Bernie” watches.

Well, that was a good start. A little cheesy and I’m wondering if way back in 1995 that hot girl would seem as much of a psycho as she does today.

The art was Greg Land and Mike Sellers and I think they went to the Nagel school of art.

The writer was Dennis O’Neil who I think got his start at Charlton.

I’ll give this 3 stars and read the rest of the mini-series.

55% - wait so Batman let Miggie get knocked out unconscious bc Nightwing wanted to handle it alone ? 😭 anyways Dick Grayson tells Bruce he’s resigning from the hero business and Alfred congratulates him. Alfred‘s visit came with Dick realizing his parents death have something to do with the Prince of Kravia.

This is such a wild departure from any vision of Nightwing I've ever seen in my nascent love of the character, but... I truly don't hate it!

There’s that joke about how much older young people from the past looked, but I just think Greg Land can’t draw a 20-year old.
