Silent Witness meets shifters in this steamy, high stakes omegaverse detective novel.

Pember McArthur’s life is falling apart, one horribly unhinged mother at a time. With no pack, few friends and even fewer family, he must learn to survive as a lone omega in a town that’s still reeling from a recent sex trafficking scandal. Landing a job as a Crime Scene Investigator, he gets thrust into a world of violence, murder and one smoking hot Detective Sergeant who is hell bent on being the most miserable fucker around.

When alphas start turning up dead in a string of bizarre and seemingly unrelated attacks, Pember and DS Blake Smith must work together to catch the person responsible. However, when the number of bodies starts to grow, it becomes clear that dead men tell no tales, and the police have no leads. As the case unfolds, both come to learn that death is not the end, but the beginning of something altogether unexpected.

This is an omegaverse novel, set in an alternative version of England where humans are also wolves, men can get pregnant and everyone has a secondary sex. Contains M/M, open door smut, mpreg (although not featured heavily in this book), alternative human biology, shifting, Brit-cop humour, found family, sarcasm, two traumatised protagonists, serious sexual assault (implied but never described), suicide (described on page), graphic violence and, most importantly, copious amounts of kick-assery. Mature audiences only (18+).

Part of a series, but each book follows a different pairing. Book three coming soon!

“Idiot,” he said, pulling Pember into a tight embrace. “You fucking idiot.”

Pember smiled against his chest. “I love you too.”

I really enjoyed Hammer & Gavel but Night Call I absolutely loved! Despite it being a slow burn once again.

We met Blake and Pember in book one already (tho I think you can totally read this as a standalone) and I was looking forward to their story soooo much!

This book follows Pember, a fiercely determined but emotionally scarred omega and newly employed with forensics, and Blake, the stoic alpha detective whose quiet strength hides a damaged heart, literally and figuratively. They both not only end up working the same murder case but also as neighbors with an old-lady alpha living between them who not only makes their lives harder but also brings them together privately when they look after her.

And while I loved Pember with all my heart, Blake was the truly surprising character with more to him and a side I didn’t expect that made him hella intriguing.

“Can you walk?”
An impish grin spread across Pember’s face. “You know… I don’t think I can. You’d better carry me.” He bit his lip. “Al-pha.” Blake growled, and before Pember could comprehend what was happening, he found himself being flung over Blake’s shoulder. “I-I-I meant like a princess!”

Their relationship buildup is so tender but bursting with chemistry (and pheromones and longing) that when they finally come together it’s so rewarding and so damn hot.

He gripped Blake’s chin, holding his gaze. He looked different. There was something primal in his eyes. Something wild, something sensual, something wholly… omega. It was his wolf, staring at him through the haze of pleasure. He didn’t dare breathe, didn’t dare speak should it displease his mate. He could only nod like an idiot.

Rounding down for I feel like the author botched the end a little again when tying up the loose ends. Imo this could’ve been done more gradually with starting the process earlier. It felt rushed and a bit messy, but thankfully not as bad as I experienced it in book one.

Tho, with this being my only complaint I still one hundred percent recommend this series. We don’t see slow burn romances often in omegaverse and with the added, pretty decent mysteries this series could definitely attract readers who previously weren’t sold on the genre.

Dnf 91% that's 434 pages and too many hours I'll never get back...

I'm disappointed. Why?
I couldn't connect with the characters in this book for the longest time.
The writing was all over the place, interactions didn't always make sense.
People were snapping, irritated beyond reason, not respecting boundaries.
This story read very different from the first installment, that one had been intriguing and captivating from the start, and had subtleties that sadly this installment missed in my opinion.

Aside the fact that the criminal case was hardly a mistery from (at the latest) the half point, I felt the author in this installment really gave their all with the gory descriptions of the crime scenes and corpses. Pages and pages of torn apart bodies.

The storyline wasn't smooth, the assumptions the MCs and secondary characters had and the conclusions they drew in their discussions about the criminal case were erratic and whimsical. It seemed to me the author couldn't focus on a line to follow.
The characters declared irrevocably how they would act, then acted differently, again and again. It was tiresome.

I enjoyed the times Blake and Pember were together, once they cared for each other.
Most of their sex fests felt anticlimactic, though, on their elderly neighbour's couch, or between showering and having to report back urgently with their inspector.

I don't even want to talk about everything regarding Tracy and the fact that Pember asked her near the end if she loved him. I'm sorry? Didn't the author remember everything they had already written about Tracy? No?

With how long the book was you'd expect the author to take care with their characters and how they build the criminal case and investigation, but these all took a backseat to detailled corpse descriptions and superfluous interactions with the too many and not necessary secondary characters.

Very disappointing. Especially because I loved the first installment.

TENS ACROSS THE BOARD

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I really loved Night Call. From the start, Pember felt like such a real, layered character—lonely and vulnerable, but stronger than he gives himself credit for. His dynamic with Blake had me hooked; I loved how their relationship slowly built from guarded tension into something tender and trusting.

That said, the “villain” was a little too obvious, and I also don’t think Pember’s mother got the punishment she really deserved. Neither of those things took away from my enjoyment, though—they just left me wishing for a bit more payoff in those areas.

Overall, this book balanced suspense, emotion, and romance beautifully. It’s dark at times, but never loses sight of the heart at the center. C.T. Whistle has definitely become an auto-buy author for me.

I enjoyed book two as much as book one, even though there wasn't a sigma MC.

I really like the British omegaverse criminal investigation combo, it's just different enough to feel like I'm not reading the same old omegaverse story.

Cute banter, nice side characters (Oliver, book 1's MC, shows up a bit), abusive family member, found family/pack, and lots of pets! A corgi, a black lab, a ginger guinea pig, and an obnoxious African Grey parrot.

For each of Blake’s massive steps, Pember had to take three more. Amusement tremored along the bond, and Pember realised Blake was huffing with wolfish amusement.
“Slower,” Pember growled, nipping Blake’s ribs.
Blake skittered to the side before using one of his paws to flick soil into Pember’s fur. “Little legs.”

Longer RTC w/tags.

Author's helpful CWs: parental abuse (described on page), adult sexual abuse (implied but never described), graphic gore, suicide (described on page), childhood illness, death of a family member, trauma, graphic depictions of the aftermath of violence.

I am eating this series up.

This one was a lot slower and had a quieter, tender feel to it and I loved it just as much as book 1. Possibly more?! Hard to pick favorites. Pember and Blake were sooooo sweet and their friendship started out so pure and lovely (even though Blake is a grump). Watching them slowly care more and more about each other and take care of one another?! 👌 I even love that the physical aspects of their relationship was a slow progression but once we finally got there?! 🔥 I swear I almost passed out just at the first kiss lol.

Both of these main characters were dealing with their own traumas and it was lovely to see them help heal the others' soul.

This book still was similar to the first in that there is lovely banter, side characters to adore, the setting and the investigative plotline, etc.

I really need the next book ASAP - it is going to be so good and once again such a different dynamic and vibe than either book so far. 👀

I laughed and I cried. I loved it so much. The way I love Pember and Blake. This was such a unique story, with mystery and romance and all the trauma bonding.

I was really curious how Blake’s story would evolve after meeting him in book one. And I really enjoyed his storyline. He was a fully fleshed out character and even though he started out as grouchy, you quickly wanted a happy ending for him.

Oh sweet Pember. Talk about trauma bonding. I just wanted to give him a hug. I love that he was sassy and sweet but also strong willed and crazy smart. The way he and Blake evolved was beautiful.

Oh and Val. What a beautiful side character. Her presence allowed us to see so many sides of Pember and Blake. I cried when they all said “pack.” I also really appreciated that everything wasn’t tied up in a nice little bow for her, it made it much more real.

I have so many thoughts about the cases they were working and the final outcome. Without giving anything away- at the end of the day, this was a story about omega suppression and their rights. And the differences between their secondary sexes. A very poignant and relevant story to tell.

And can’t forget Oliver and Lucas and their kids. Loved seeing them make an appearance. And knowing Oliver still had Pember’s back. So many nuances to this world and story. I didn’t want it to end.

And I cannot wait for the next book. I am anticipating a fun ride!

It's tough to think of what could be better here. I loved the character growth, which starts at "poor sad omega" and grows quite a bit from there. I also like how this series subverts some omegaverse expectations. The first book featured a Sigma. This one doesn't quite give you what's expected out of heats and ruts. There is a lovely found family, and the sex is smoking hot.

I do think the mystery was pretty easy to figure out, but still made an interesting point.

I can't wait to read more!

Really enjoyable follow-up to the first book in the series! I'm enjoying this world and the characters, and I appreciated that the MCs here felt very distinct from the MCs in book 1, which is often not in the case in my experience. The dynamic here was different and equally lovely, and I really enjoyed the build between them. The case aspect was a bit more prevalent here, though fairly obvious from the jump, and it's clear this series is definitely meant to be more relationship driven, which I am fine with. Lovely read, and I'm very much looking forward to book 3!

Okay, this is my favorite book of the series so far. I loved the progression of their relationship and watching them slowly build trust and find love in each other. The slower burn of this book had me levitating when they finally kissed. UGH THEY OWN MY HEART. I will never grow tired of an alpha's possessiveness & protective nature. It fuels me. There is also something about an omega being like BACK OFF HE'S MINE that I just adore. Pember & Blake are just the perfect couple.

Definitely enjoyed this book more than book 1 now that I have adjusted my expectations and understand the vibe a bit better. Still disappointed that the story and the cover don't match though, because the cover art for this series is incredible, but gives off these noir vibes that are completely absent in the book.

Anyway, this story is about Pember, the vulnerable omega from book 1 - but here we see his feisty side, working as a forensic tech in the West Newton lab. He finds out his neighbour is Blake, a detective sergeant we also met in book 1. Blake is grumpy and overworked, Pember is a sweetheart - it's my favourite couple trope. They work together on a series of murders that leave the police force baffled, all while exploring their chemistry and dealing with their traumatic pasts. It was a pretty slow-burn situation, but worth the build up.

Overall an enjoyable read, with likeable characters and a mystery to get invested in. Looking forward to more from this author.

Whistle's done it again. Police investigations, omega x alpha, hurt x comfort, action, suspense, romance... we've got it all.

I couldn't stand Pember in the first novel, but I loved him in this one. Pember and Blake are perfect for each other, and their chemistry was palpable. This will definitely be another omegaverse comfort series for me. Love the author's writing style so much already.

Great Addition to Series

I enjoyed the story, seeing the MCs overcome and connect. Val was my favorite character. I want to know more about what happens with Ru. I do feel like this person deserves a HEA, despite what they got wrapped up in.

Pember frowned. “Because omegas have to think ten steps ahead. Always. Consider all possible reactions to our actions. You don’t have to do that. You just go through life brute forcing everything, but it’s how we survive.”

ooh this was fun!!

most, if not all, of the little criticism i had for the first book was totally gone in this one!

i'm genuinely so excited for the next book in this series and for anything else this author decides to write in the future, their work is delightful and it's clear it'll continue to mature given how book two in the series already feels more polished.

i wiiill say, that this one sparkled a bit less without the cool element the sigma designation brought to the table and i also caught who the culprit was way too soon—buut i thought they were going to repeat the mistake of having their villain be, well, too villanous and guilty of literally everything, but that wasn't the case.

the added layer of conflict between pember and his mom made the story richer as it was a bigger mystery to me wheter the harrassment pem was suffering came from his mom or from maya.

as was blake's heart condition, tho i did hope to have more instances of him being a grump, but that's just the grump-loving-sunshine in me, lol.

all in all, a very fun read and i will be in the look out for book three!

Night Call is the second book in this Omegaverse series! It’s a MM alpha/omega detective murder mystery story. Pember is getting out of a bad situation with his controlling mother. He finds a new place and meets his neighbor, Blake, an alpha, who happens to work as a detective. Pember starts his new job in the crime scene unit and ends up working with Blake.

I really enjoyed this book! I think I liked this one more than the first! I’m happy for the dual POV and Pember and Blake had so much chemistry!

this was a delight. I loved this a bit more than the first but this one also had two of my fav tropes in it so its kinda hard to compete against that. grumpy/sunshine and age gap, had me sat.

Pember, my sweet baby angel, get behind me. I love him so much and his relationship with Blake just felt right. this book deals with really heavy subject matters at times but it has a lighter spin to it, so it doesnt feel as heavy as a more serious book would feel.

‎He smelled like sex, like heat, like laughter and silly conversations in the middle of the night. He smelled like his.

‎First things first, I loved Oliver's scenes. Though I had a hard time imagining this Oliver from Oliver in the first book. He was different, much more confident. It looked good on him. It was nice to know that his little family was doing well.

‎Now onto our main characters. Pember and Blake were so unexpected. From the first book, we knew that Blake would be on a break because his mate was giving birth. And then all of a sudden, he was transferred to the Major Crime Unit, with no mate and no baby. Just what the hell happened?!

‎Their story was quite sad. Both suffered on their own. Their meeting was a catalyst for their much-needed healing. Pember's character development was satisfying. I was glad he was more than the weak omega we saw in the beginning. Blake's character was so interesting to uncover. He was more than what he showed to people. I loved how they communicated. The alpha was protective but respectful. The omega was soft but determined.

‎Their case of dead alphas, although it was obvious who did it, was still interesting. It was exciting, even more so than the case in the first book.

‎I also enjoyed the secondary characters. Namely, Val, my god did I cry for her. Chichi, my love, was also interesting. I hope she'll have more scenes in the next book. She was a badass. I was also enjoying the team dynamics of the small team of CSI. I wanted more scenes with them.

‎I'm looking forward to the next book that will focus on Johnny and Taylor. Now, I'm not sure about those two. They didn't have the best introduction at all.

5.0 ⭐️ | 3.5 🌶️

- omegaverse
-alpha x omega
- detectives and crime scene investigators
-grumpy x sunshine

I enjoyed this as much as the first one, but this book got me teary-eyed at the end because of the found family they had. I like Blake, my sleep-deprived sexy alpha, who is so compatible with Pem. Pem, who became so brave and stood up for himself. They're aching loneliness was cured by the company of each other. I wish the heat scenes was more intense but nonetheless the detective stuff keeps it interesting.

My freaking heart! I don't know where CT Whistle has been, but from now on when she writes a book, I am sat. Seriously, if you love mm romance with trauma, healing, hurt/comfort, self discovery, an interesting plot all mixed in with an omegaverse world with all the restrictions you'd think but in a modern England, I'm not sure why you're still looking.

Since you've probably read book 1, you know who Pember & Blake are... but you don't realize how freaking ADORABLE they are together. Pember has a way of bringing Blake out of the dark shell he's been in while Blake allows Pember to feel safe while learning who he is without the dark shadow of his abusive mother looming over him. Or at least, if things could just go right.

I miss them already, but now I'm excited for the next one! I'm really interested how that's going to work...

What a total waste of an ending!!!

I would say this was 3/4 stars for most of the book but drop down 1 to the end for having one of the most depressing endings I’ve read in any book recently.

Note while HEA for the main couple it’s not a HEA for LITERALLY EVERY OTHER CHARACTER.

A gang grape victim goes to horrible grape jail, most of the characters go to prison or just straight up are murdered:die.

Story ends with a last min knotting scene Right after a ton of gang grape fall out issues for secondary characters and the death of one of the main characters. I just….

Seriously one of the biggest wastes of time I’ve read in a long time.

4.5! Blake and Pember were so great together. There was no angst just sweet and sexy vibes for two damaged men. The spice was spicy, the fluff was fluffy, and the plot was interesting.

Compared to book 1 this one felt a little more classic omegaverse with the themes and character traits for me, but was no less enjoyable. The characters were well developed and everything was answered and wrapped up well in the end (I want justice for poor sweet Ru!!). Blake was a perfect gentleman alpha and Pember was a feisty omega. Blake's moments of possessiveness were done really well and fit in nicely with the plot. Pember growing and becoming his own person was such a joy to read. Nesting!! need I a say more?

I read through this super fast because the pacing was great, the plot was great, and the romance was great. it felt like a perfectly balanced book!

My small and insignificant reasons for taking half a star were I wish there was a little more done with Blake's heart condition. It felt like it didn't really serve a purpose and I wanted it to. The timeline of things also felt a little odd to me, or not explained well enough maybe, at times. For instance Pember knows nothing about forensics and then in a matter of weeks he's essentially doing it all on his own. Meh. I would have maybe liked a little more about Blake's ruts since so many omegaverse books don't even mention ruts so when I get a whiff of them I just want MORE, but thats entirely a me thing. I also just liked book 1 slightly better, and that was a solid 5 stars for me so this lands at a 4.5!

Moments that hit, more misses

I really wanted to like this as much as thr first in the series, but it's a miss for me for a few reasons. Firstly, the split perspective actually doesnt work - in the first book, my favourite beat was when we got a glimpse into Lucas' mind, with full insight into Blake's throughout this book it is less exciting at best and frankly confusing at worst. There are romantic moments that give me the ick in here, I dont love the lack of resolution in Val's storyline - it felt a bit like because they went hard on loving babies in the first book, they did a hard pivot to an elderly character and it is lacking some authenticity. The mystery plot is decent, if missing some details, but my main issue is that we are now 2 books down with no half-decent female parents. All are abusive. There's a real problem with mPreg omegaverse that it can slide into misogyny and while I dont think that was the authors intention, its definitely in here. The lack of ethnic diversity also doesnt sit well - Maya and Chichi are the only two I can recall, and the latter feels half-formed. I can see real potential here but honestly think the author needs a little narrative space from this world.

Idk why I get the vibes this author doesn’t like female characters very much.

Story itself was fine. I liked the way the relationship developed it was cute. I wish we could have seen more of Blake’s parents and honestly though I was kind of bored of the main couple by the end and was far more curious of the aftermath of what the villain did. Because while I can acknowledge issues with murder it seems like omegas get an extremely short end of the stick and I can’t fault you for wanting the five guys who gang raped you dead. All the omegas were in such tough spots and I just felt really bad for them. It kind of makes it hard to enjoy the romance when I’m mostly just sad for them and their stories and how now they’ll just rot in jail.

Definitely one of the better written books on KU imho. Also the goriness of their job kind of got to me a bit so I definitely skipped some of the details.

Pember and Blake’s story is a slower-burn, with much heavier themes of hurt/comfort. They aren’t enemies to lovers, but they do run each other the wrong way a bit at first. This quickly turns to attraction the more they interact. Their care for their elderly neighbor and animals is a beautiful way for them to learn each other’s true hearts and see sides they don’t show the rest of the world. There is still plenty of humor and spice in this story. I loved Oliver in the first book and relate to him a lot, but Pember stole my heart, and Blake is such a unique MC. Strong and soft at the same time.

I would say the first book is like an over-the-shoulder fireman’s carry running you to a HEA, and this book is a bridal-style step across the threshold. I cannot wait for the third book and urge you to check this series out!

3/5. This one was even more hardcore and advanced omegaverse than the first one. I liked it, but it was still a proper mess and wonky. I will say that this one was in zero way written for the queer crowd. It’s for the girlies, hands-down. There’s no way it’s not. I’m not saying it’s disrespectful, or that it’s done poorly, but this one isn’t for the gays or theys. It’s girl power at the core of it, and while the MC isn’t cast as an undercover chick, the story itself is for the ladies in the gang. Nothing wrong with it, just is what it is. Enjoying it for what it is is what you’re gonna have to do.

Pember and Blake Get the HEA They Both Deserve

I loved this second book in the series almost as much as the first. The world building is great, what with the police mysteries along with the omegaverse and finding your fated mate. Blake and Pember each has their own traumas to overcome, but it was so rewarding to see Pember learn to stand up for himself on his own. Before welcoming Blake as his Alpha. I also loved the support they both provided Val, a cantankerous old Alpha with a crazy escape artist parrot, who just needed a pack bond again. So, so glad I decided to take a chance on this author. Looking forward to the next book in the series.

another winner!

I am so happy I found this author! I devoured book 1 and have now devoured book 2 which is just a well written as book one! We have characters from book 1 now taking the stage and we get little scenes of our beloved main characters from book 1.
The romance was in some ways similar but in others very different to the romance in book 1 and the mystery was well done and engaging. I love the growth we got to witness from Pember and Blake as individuals and then as a couple. I cannot wait for book 3

This book has feels. I loved the first in the series, and this one was just as good. The world building is flawless, and the character development leads the story. But then you get this cool mystery plot, too, like sprinkles. And there's doggos. I just really like it when wolf shifter have dogs as pets, it's weird and cute! ABO will always be an empowering deconstruction of gender roles and patriarchy, and this book is a prime example if that. I look forward to reading more, this is an author to watch.
