Buried in every cell lies a secret waiting to be unlocked.
Camille Dubois, a brilliant and relentless geneticist, discovers a hidden code buried in the so-called “junk” regions of human DNA — a breakthrough that could rewrite the story of evolution itself. Instincts, memory, even fragments of ancestral experience may have been embedded in our biology all along.
Backed by a visionary tech billionaire and a team of elite minds, Camille embarks on a scientific journey with world-shifting implications. But as her research deepens, she begins to uncover truths far more complex — and dangerous — than she ever imagined.
Caught between powerful interests and the limits of her own morality, Camille must decide how far she’s willing to go to unlock the genome’s most profound secrets.
The Code of Life is a gripping science thriller that explores the edge of discovery, the weight of knowledge, and the cost of rewriting what it means to be human.
Victor Masip was born in Barcelona, Spain, and currently lives in Amsterdam. From a young age, he was captivated by science—subscribing to various science magazines and avidly following Discovery Channel programs. His curious mind was drawn to understanding the universe, technology, and astronomy.
Although his professional career led him into cosmetic dentistry, his passion for science fiction never waned. Inspired by real scientific concepts and driven by a lifelong fascination, he set out to create his debut novel—a blend of authentic science, imagination, and adventure.
After extensive collaboration with his editor, Allister Thomson, Victor is proud to share this book with readers. Creating it has been a dream come true, and he hopes others will enjoy reading it as much as he enjoyed writing it.
I was unaware I had won this until it showed up in my library. High tension, relatable characters, though I think some parts could have been left out for length and been more effective at maintaining that aspect. Overall a good sci-fi read. I've seen some criticism about the "coincidental" plot progression, but it didn't bother me, it's fiction and his debut novel. I'm looking forward to reading more by this author as he progresses.
The Code of Life by Victor Masip is a gripping science fiction thriller centered around a groundbreaking discovery hidden within human DNA. The protagonist, Camille Dubois, a brilliant geneticist, uncovers hidden instructions embedded in so-called “junk DNA”—genetic material long believed to serve no purpose. These sequences turn out to influence instinct, memory, and even human behavior. What begins as a scientific breakthrough quickly spirals into a moral and societal dilemma, as tech investors, governments, and scientists clash over its potential use. Masip skillfully blends believable biotechnology with ethical questions and human conflict, giving the story intellectual depth without losing momentum. While some supporting characters feel underdeveloped compared to the protagonist, the originality of the concept and the consistent suspense more than make up for it. For readers who enjoy science-based fiction with a philosophical edge, this book is definitely worth reading.
This was a GoodReads giveaway win of a Kindle ebook.
I did enjoy the premise that most of our "junk" DNA is really code for something else. I did not expect the turn it took once the code was cracked.
A bit "Hollywood" in the telling. Interesting science fiction. Not totally logical, but how else do you get the DNA Specialist protagonist totally sucked into an interstellar voyage. Okay, put the real science on hold and let's really have a tale of human nature. (Well the romance element was not needed nor very well developed.)
My pet peeve is the discovery of alien alloys (compounds) does not mean we need a new periodic table, but it does imply our understanding of metallurgy needs to be updated.
The ending wasn't what I would have expected. Life doesn't go on as if nothing has changed. I think I read far too many books that the author intends to be the debut of a series. This book totally reads as stand alone.

Victor Masip succeeded to take me on a journey together with Camille Dubois into an unknown world that is either frightening as wonderful. It is a glimpsing reflection of the world we live in today, offering a view on humanity that I share. I can appreciate the visual detail in the story, that really brought the book to life.

Code of Life by Victor Masip is a thought-provoking novel with an intelligent and well-woven plot. Beyond its gripping storyline, it challenges you to reflect on the ethical and social questions shaping our current world. A compelling read that lingers in your mind long after you turn the last page.
if they had wanted to write a screenplay, they should have just done that and left the novelization out of it. Naive, hackneyed, corny, shallow, but well written. I found it so annoyingly predictable and ultimately vacuous that I couldn't wait to finish so I could move on to something else.
I enjoyed this! The writing was a little superfluous at times and I was waiting for a big twist which didn’t come, but this was a really thoughtful and engaging SF story. Thank you to the publisher and Goodreads for the ebook!
