"I glanced over my shoulder and looked down the sheer fifty-foot drop into the churning waters below. As my heart pounded, I tried to remain calm. One misstep and I'd fall to my death. Trapped between him and the water I struggled for a way to break free, but the menacing arch of his brow made it clear-do not cross him. Why hadn't I seen through this clever facade? My heart filled with regret. As I stared into his eyes that reflected his murderous gaze, a shiver raced up my spine. I knew this was my last chance to escape, but before I could act, he moved smoothly toward me like a shark in the water. I swallowed. "You won't bury your sins this time." He merely sauntered forward and smirked. "I already have. Remember-everyone keeps secrets." I'm finished with Everyone Keeps Secrets: First this is an exquisitely written book. When I selected it, to be honest, it was written in a genre that I thought I had invented and am so grateful I had not -- romantic suspense saga. I may never get to book 2 in my series if the Katherine Greyson keeps up this pace -- and quality. I will be diverted again from my own work to read hers. A review is beyond me now-- but hear the enthusiasm in my voice!
In Volume One of this series, the book opens with William Crawford's life being irrevocably altered, as something tragic and violent occurs at his family home. We meet him five years later to find him transformed from a privileged child into a dark and brooding teen. Now known as Jake Hanson, it is clear that over the course of five years he has faced deprivation and fear.
Arriving in a new town at the beginning of the school year, Jake meets Simplicity Kendall, the Police Chiefs daughter, during an altercation with her childhood friend, Gabe. Expecting the worst from Jake, Simplicity and Gabe are confused when the angry teen turns out to be a compassionate soul.
This novella ends with Simplicity finding herself at once afraid of and attracted to Jake, Gabe being suspicious, and Jake trying to find a way to survive his "father's" arrival home.
Very compelling storyline. It isn't clear to me, via the novella or the on-line description, if this is a book for teens and young adults, but if so, it stands the possibility of holding its own against other coming of age classics.
It was pretty good, interesting and intriguing with likable characters. My only complaint is that it was too short . There are only twelve chapters that anyone with free time can read it easily in a couple of hours. Now I have to read the next volume (good thing it's just .99 cent) to know what happens next .
Very simplistic, almost laughable conversation amongst the high school characters. Only thing saving the rating is the underlying mystery behind the father and babysitter situation from five years prior, and why the main character seems to be supporting a run-to-survive mentality for a younger sibling. It seems like the younger sibling understands this isn’t normal, so what is he protecting? Not sure the value in writing is strong enough for me to pay money to get the next book though. Started strong, failed in the middle, and then picked up a little bit towards the end...

It was a great story and I was really into it. How disappointing g when it ended abruptly, leaving everything up in the air. I have no idea what it was about or why the characters were there.
This book had been on my list for a while and, as it was free, I thought I would try this starter of a series and while the length did not bother me when I initially purchased it, I was ultimately grateful that it was only 12 chapters long.
The plot was a cliche American teen's first day at school with a stereotypical new 'bad-boy' with a dark, secret and potentially dangerous past. Jake Hanson a.k.a William Crawford was the only character who seemed to have the most depth but the author just did not elaborate that much on it at all. Only at the end of the novel did she finally reveal some of Hanson's/Crawford's past and then suddenly, the book ended. I don't mind cliff hanger novels but in order to make me want to read the following books of the series, I have to actually like the first book and unfortunately, this was not the case for Everyone Keeps Secrets.
I would only recommend this novel to those who like stereotypically American teen romances.
In this first story in this series, drama centers around two families -- the kindhearted, working class Kendall family, and the wealthy, damaged Crawford family. This starts with the new student, Jake, being involved in a serious school fight and Simplicity Kendall stepping in to try to break it up. Simplicity wants to know just who Jake is, but he has secrets and is not willing to divulge them. The characters are well defined, captivating, and the story is very well written. Suitable for young adults to read, and adults will enjoy this series, too. I'm moving right away to Book 2.
This book is part of a series and does leave you hanging... Although I'm not a fan of short stories or cliffhangers, this book at least got my interest, so I will continue on to book 2...
This book is intriguing not knowing what to expect it keeps you guessing wondering what is going on in the character's life. It leaves you wanting more...
