"A whole lot of fun!" --Seattle Times

"I have the body of a Chihuahua, but the mind of a master sleuth."

Aspiring P.I. Geri Sullivan's new case has got her talking Chihuahua, Pepe, hot under the collar. Wealthy widow Lucille Carpenter left her entire fortune to her beloved dogs, and someone is trying to poison them. Anyone who would hurt a perro is lower than a cucaracha in Pepe's book. But when Geri and Pepe investigate, they discover that it's not just the coddled canines who are in danger. Now there are human targets too.

At the lavish Carpenter manor, Pepe digs for clues among the pampered pooches, bitter relatives, suspicious staff, and larcenous lawyers. But there's only one diminutive detective smart enough to save the day--and the dogs…

Geri Sullivan and her dog Pepe work for a private detective agency and are given a case where a woman left her fortune to her dogs instead of her children. The case gets complicated as Geri and Pepe are working for the side of the dogs and unknown to them, their boss Jimmy G, is working on the side of the children. I always love catching up with this series. Pepe and Geri are one of the best duos. I love how Felix no longer questions that Geri can talk to Pepe and he just goes along with it. The mystery was well done. I liked how Geri was able to put all the clues together, with Pepe's help of course, and figured out what Jimmy G was doing. I loved the ending and can't wait to read the next book.

A typical cozy, only this time, the sleuth has a pet chihuahua who talks to her. I found the chihuahua annoying. Some might find it funny, so YMMV.

Other than that, there's nothing really of note here.

With the beautiful countryside lined with rows of fragrant fields of lavender, Geri Sullivan and her talking chihuahua, Pepe, set out to investigate the circumstances of a wealthy widow who died and left her five million dollar estate to her four beloved cocker spaniels. Was she crazy? Pepe is a smooth-talking partner for Geri, and he's sniffing everywhere for some clues when bodies start turning up dead! The family members are upset, but mad enough to kill?

I enjoyed this Barking Detective Mystery because it's very fast-paced, has lots of humor, the pet characters are entertaining, and Pepe is ultra-cool. The ending is satisfying for Geri and Pepe, and the cocker spaniels. I'll definitely keep reading this series!

NetGalley and Kensington provided me a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

This series is so much fun to read. Pepe, little Chihuahua is the detective partner of Geri Sullivan. They work for Jimmy G, private eye. As Geri hasn't taken the necessary courses yet to get her P.I. license, she is considered an "assistant" even though she and Pepe are the ones who solve the cases. Pepe who considers himself a very suave and macho pup is a great foil for Geri.
This mystery takes a different turn as at the end. Geri ends her relationship with Jimmy G. It will be interesting to see how this pans out in the next book, The Silence of the Chihuashuas in 2015.

First time reading this series, having found this book at a local bookstore but none of the earlier ones. It was an intriguing read typical of the 'cozy' style of mystery, with a limited but diverse suspect pool to keep you guessing until the end. The whole 'narrator can hear her dog talk' premise is cool, but that Geri talks back to him and carries on an entire conversation with other humans only able to hear her side of it, and those humans rarely point it out, seems a bit of a reach to me. Geri's boss Jimmy G is a bit of an oddity too. It seems he has been a main character in this series since the beginning, but his role in this book is confusing. He assigns Geri and Pepe to a case of an elderly woman who left her entire estate to her beloved dogs, but her children are contesting the will, so Geri needs to help the woman's lawyer prove she was of sound mind before her death. Jimmy G though takes up the case of the kids, who don't want to see their mother's money squandered on a bunch of pampered pooches. So throughout the book. Geri and Jimmy are often in the same place at different times, yet they rarely cross paths.
The overall story itself was good. I'd give it 3.5 stars if I could because the author did keep me guessing to the end and did tie all the clues together, but the odd character development of the 2 human leads detracts from the story, especially early on when readers are deciding whether to stick with the book.

I read Dial C (#1), Sniffs Twice (#4) and Silence (#5) all in a row. I received 4 and 5 from Netgalley in exchange for my honest review, but I got Dial C from Amazon.

I'm just going to do a joint review. First, you just have to accept that Geri can hear Pepe talk. If that sounds like something you have issues with, don't bother reading the series.

Geri and Pepe are likable. I don't find either especially funny, nor Pepe's tall tales, but the books are light fluff despite the occasional dead person. I think the authors try to pack too many threads in each book especially Silence which has a missing sister turn up, best friend missing (a best friend that Geri spends no time with in all three books I've read, what's up with that?!?), a dead woman, a boyfriend (who also gets no page time), the remarriage of Geri's ex and more. Whew, too much.

I also noticed that even though I jumped from book 1 to 4 I apparently missed nothing. I guess each storyine can be independent, it also showed that there wasn't any character development either.

So, the upshot is I didn't mind spending the time with Geri and Pepe, but I have no real incentive to get caught up with books 2 and 3 or read a 6th book if one comes out.

Added 11/5: For those complaining about the use of the word bitch in these books, bitch is a legitimate and commonly used term for a female dog in the dog breeding world. Get over it!

The Chihuahua Always Sniffs Twice by Waverly Curtis

4 STARS

The Chihuahua Always Sniff Twice is the fourth book of the Barking Detective Mystery. It is the first one I have read. I would love to go and read the other books in the series.

This is a cute story. The Chihuahua Pepe talks but only to P.I. Geri Sullivan his partner owner. Some scenes will have you laughing out loud especially the bus chases.

Geri Sullivan is the main character. She is learning how to be a PI. Geri has a cat and Pepe. Lots of people think she is kind of crazy because she talks to Pepe and she hears him too.

Pepe is a talking Chihuahua who is working as a detective too. Pepe talks tough like he is a alpha dog but actions are different. Pepe also falls in love. Pepe is very bossy to Geri.

Wealthy widow Lucille Carpenter died and left her money to her dogs. Now her kids want to break the will. Someone is trying to kill the dogs.

Geri is sent in to find who is trying to kill the dog. But there is a couple of murders are happening. Her boss is going behind her back and is being mysterious.

The setting is in Washington during in lavender festival.

I was given this ebook by Net Galley and Kensington Books to read. So I can give an honest review of The Chihuahua Always Sniffs Twice.

This book fulfills requirement #3~PI Crime for the 2015 Eclectic Reader Challenge.
This book was also chosen for me as part of the Trick-or-Treat challenge at AAMP.

In this 4th outing of the Barking Detective series, Geri and her talking chihuahua Pepe, are sent to protect a group of dogs that inherited millions after their owner died. Their boss, JimmyG, gets involved and messes things up. The book starts a little slow, but once it gets going it is pretty good. I particularly loved the "chase" scene. It made me laugh out loud repeatedly. I don't want to say too much more because of spoilers.

This series is light, fluffy, fun reading. I love Pepe, the talking chihuahua, and all the funny little things he says. This isn't exactly Mensa reading material but it IS charming and sweet. If you open the book looking for a cute little mystery that is fast paced and will make you laugh out loud you'll really enjoy this series.

Number 4 of the Barking Detective Mysteries with Pepe and his human, Geri.

This case has Geri, the private investigator-in-training and her talking chihuahua, Pepe, travelling north to Port Townsend and the Lavender Festival to investigate who is attempting to kill Lucille Carpenter's dogs, the beneficiaries of her estate. And her adult children are not happy about the trust but who is the one attempting to poison the dogs?

Another amusing mystery which has plenty of twists - her boss, Jimmy G, who originally sends her to Port Townsend to meet with the trustee of the will, takes another job from other trustee who is working with the children to break the will, basically going behind his student/assistant's back. It's a case of poisoned lavender lemonade (recipe included in the back of the book) killing both attorneys. There's the search for an actual copy of the trust. A vet that seems to have a medical procedure for the wealthy pups way too often. Bus chases as well as the dogs being chased amidst the crowds attending the festival. Of course, Pepe and Geri are at the center of the solved murder as well as finding the trust which gives just about everyone a happy ending.

It's a light and fluffy (pun intended) mystery that does demand a bit of suspension of belief - come on, it has a talking dog in it - while still being a rather quick and enjoyable read.

The Chihuahua Always Sniffs Twice is the fourth in Waverly Curtis’ Barking Detective series, and it’s just as amusing as the previous entries. Not surprisingly, dogs are involved, in this case a quartet of cocker spaniels who have inherited a fortune in trust. It’s also no surprise that there are a number of humans who would like to break that trust, along with some who want to protect the dogs, if only because they benefit from their positions caring for the wealthy canines. The case would be a lot clearer if apprentice P.I. Geri Sullivan and her talking (but only to her) chihuahua Pepe could figure out which side their eccentric boss, Jimmy G, is really working (that is, if Jimmy G is actually working at all). Lots of fun.

I really enjoyed reading this! At first, it was kind of slow and Jimmy G was tough to take but everyone (including him) started to grow on me and the story at least started to pick up 30 pages in (not at the 200 page mark like some cozies) and ended with a bang. It's a zany so things are over the top silly but at least it's comical (I laughed out loud in some parts--a rarity for me). To top it off, the mystery part was alright too and kind of clever. This book won't be everybody's cup of tea but for me, it was a very pleasant, fast paced read.

Set in Seattle, trainee P I and her talking chihuahua tackle a case involving millions of dollars left in trust to four cocker spaniels and someone trying to poison the dogs. It does not help that her boss agrees to work for members of the family trying to break the trust.

Lots of animals and humor.

I love this series! I enjoyed the perspective of Jimmy G this time, which had me thrown off the trail of the real murderer. The storyline wasn’t my favorite, but Pepe still made me smile and laugh out loud at times. Ready for the next book, but said I’m almost done with the series.

Geri Sullivan is training to be a private investigator with Jimmy Gerrard, owner of Gerrard Investigations. Getting a call from him, she is told that she needs to see an attorney, Barrett Boswell, the estate trustee, who believes that someone is attempting to kill dogs. Yes, dogs. It seems that Lucille Carpenter left her vast fortune and her home to her dogs.

So she heads out from Seattle to Port Townsend, to to see her newest client with her dog and partner, Pepe. Pepe is a chihuahua that talks. Literally. Except Geri is the only one that can hear him. And since he's also pretty good at flushing out answers, due to his heightened sense of smell, Geri really needs him to solve cases, and since this one regards dogs, Pepe will be even more helpful.

When she arrives at Boswell's office, she discovers someone dead behind his desk. At first she thinks it's her client, but when Boswell arrives shortly after her to disavow her of this notion, it turns out the dead man is another attorney, Bickerstaff, who had an office across the hall from Boswell. Finding out the man was poisoned, both Geri and Boswell think that the person or persons trying to kill the dogs have now gone on to attempting to kill humans as well.

The fact that Mrs. Carpenter left her entire fortune to the dogs doesn't sit well with her children nor her stepchildren. So it seems that all four of them have reason enough to want the dogs dead; after all, with no dogs, then the fortune will probably revert to them. Geri has her work cut out for her with this case.

I thought that this was a delightful mystery. It had enough twists and turns to keep me interested, and the author developed an inviting story with plenty of colorful characters to keep it moving along. I would have given it five stars, but it was completely annoying that Jimmy G kept talking about himself in the third person. It's almost as if he sees himself as a detachment - someone who isn't really who he is - but then again, maybe he does see himself as someone else.

Also, Geri states early on that she's grateful no one else can hear Pepe since it makes her look smarter, but then she has conversations with her dog right in front of people so that kind of nulls that fact. If you have a talking dog, even one that's smart enough to help you with investigations, it's not going to make you look smarter by talking with (not to, but with) him with other people around. It's going to make you look crazy.

Aside from this, the book was a fun read, and I look forward to the next in the series. Recommended.

I received a free copy from NetGalley and the publisher but this in no way influenced my review.

Lucille Carpenter left her vast estate to her four cocker spaniels much to the ire of her family. The staff are no happier having to care for the pampered pets either. When the estate attorney feels the dogs are in danger he hires Jimmy Gerrard's Private Investigation Agency. Geri Sullivan receives a call from Jimmy Gerrard and tells her to go see the attorney and take on the protection of the four. Packing herself and Pepe, her talking Chihuahua (Yes I said talking. Pepe can and does talk to Geri.) into the car and off to Lucille's home. To say the staff and Lucille's relatives gave her the cold shoulder would be mild. Soon the threat includes the two legged variety as well. When the attorney turns up murdered Geri has a houseful of suspects. Then another murder has taken place and Geri Felix, Geri's boyfriend and Pepe must find the killer before he removes the Cockers from the equation permanently. As well as anyone else who stands in the way of their getting to the money.

The Chihuahua Always Rings Twice is a fast paced hysterical cozy mystery. Pepe is a Chihuahua who thinks he's a mastiff and takes on all comers. Geri has a quick wit and a love of animals. The interactions between Geri and Pepe is something any guardian of fur babies will understand and believe. I found this story funny with enough twist and turns to keep me glued to the story to the very end. I recommend The Chihuahua Always Rings Twice to any cozy or animal lover. With its well rounded characters a prose that makes you feel you are partaking of the story yourself. Easily deserves a five out of five stars. Now I just want to go back and read the first three stories to spend more time with Geri and Pepe; also to see how the relationship between Felix and Geri developed. Even though this is the fifth book in the series, but can be read as a standalone book as well.

Review:

Geri and her partner, Pepe, are on another case. A rather strange case, one involving dogs that have inherited a fortune from their deceased owner. The problem is, someone wants the dogs dead and attempts to poison them. The case has special meaning for Pepe because he is a dog himself. And not just any dog, but a talking dog. Any threat made against a fellow dog is very upsetting to him and he is willing to do whatever it takes to catch the culprit. Unfortunately that puts him and Geri in real danger.

The characters are well developed and well rounded. Geri is new to the PI business but what she lacks in experience she more than make up with her determination and sense of fairness. She is willing to go the extra mile in her investigations. Pepe is one tough little dog who is only afraid of a few things, such as the dog pound and water. They make a great team and give it their all when working the case. I really enjoy their relationship and the love they have for each other. Geri’s boss, Jimmie G is a pain and I really do not like him. He treats Geri unfairly and he only cares about himself. He does add great contrast to Geri and Pepe.

The writing style flows smoothly and the book is an easy ready. The authors are very talented in character development and creating suspense with the written word. Even after the guilty party is identified, there is still tension revolving around the dogs. There are enough suspects and twists and turns to keep the reader guessing. I enjoyed that.

If you enjoy a well crafted mystery with plenty of animals and a touch of whimsical, this book is for you. Be sure to read all the books in the series, they are all great books.

Every now and then I want a cozy mystery that has a premise that is a bit off the beaten path – and with a talking dog – this fit the bill perfectly. The writing team of Waverly Curtis created a fun and funny story full of people and the pets they love, with plenty of humor and a nice mystery to solve.

Not your hard-boiled story, Pepe the Chihuahua suffers from a touch of ‘small dog syndrome’, not unlike the human version of a Napoleonic complex. Pepe however, does recognize his limitations (usually) and is determined to find the answers to his questions. He discusses these questions with his partner Geri, who has her hands full dealing with the spunky little dog that is constantly trying to impress.

In this story, a woman has left her entire estate to her four cocker spaniels, and there is some kerfuffle about that bequest, with several people turning up dead and the future of the dogs in question. This was fast paced, funny and cleverly plotted story right up to the end.

Characters are drawn beautifully: Geri is a dedicated pet lover and her boyfriend Felix is as well – the two never want to travel without their pets. To Felix’s credit, he doesn’t think it’s strange that Geri often mentions conversations she has with her dogs, and while the two have some moments that are difficult, they easily resolve the issues without much strife. The dogs all have personalities that are strongly suggestive of breed types, and the story just moved quickly despite several breaks to wipe tears from the outrageous declarations from Pepe as he tries to gain Geri’s attention and impress her.

A clever and funny romance that will brighten a dark mood, this is a cozy mystery that keeps you smiling. The first I’ve read from this author duo, it won’t be the last.

I received an eArc copy of the title from the publisher via NetGalley for purpose of honest review. I was not compensated for this review: all conclusions are my own responsibility.
