P.I. Wyatt Thomas is more than a French Quarter sleuth. Much more. Whenever a new client needs someone to investigate ghosts, psychic possession, or the paranormal and supernatural backside of New Orleans, Wyatt Thomas is the one to call.
Burdened by spring floods, malaria and yellow fever, citizens of pre-Civil War New Orleans, Louisiana often turned to voodoo practitioners—African Rosalie, Sanite Dede, Bras Coupe—for protection. None was more powerful, or feared, than Doctor John and Marie Laveau.
When psychic P.I. Detective Wyatt Thomas sees a ghost during a hospital visit, he tells his sometimes business partner, voodoo mambo Mama Mulate, about the encounter. Mama is lethally sensual, Wyatt a deadly sexy alpha male with a dangerous reputation. She trances the sleuth and channels his ghost, soon learning a curse connects him to a long-dead French aristocrat.
Wyatt begins a romance with a beautiful woman he may have known in another historical era. Together, they run the gamut of desire, carnal instincts, passion, darkest fears, and horrifying truths. It may all be for naught because he and the ghost are doomed to remain connected forever unless he time travels back to old New Orleans and lifts the curse before midnight on New Year’s Eve.
Black Magic Woman is a historical, time traveling French Quarter Mystery. It is Louisiana Mystery Writer Eric Wilder's fourth noir, paranormal thriller set in New Orleans. The books include Big Easy, City of Spirits, Primal Creatures, and the soon-to-be released River Road.
"Black Magic Woman" is part modern-day crime thriller (will the detective stop the bad guy in time?) and part time-slip historical fiction.
Private investigator Wyatt Thomas is seeing ghosts ... and he's hoping the local mambo, Mama Mulate, can help him. It turns out that he's tied to as curse from the past, and only going back in time will help him. Plus, his one-time girlfriend, Carla, is asking for help clearing her grandfather's name; he was hanged for a crime that no one in the family believes he committed
In the mean while, former police detective Tony Nicasio has been asked by the local crime lord to help find a long-lost, cherished possession. All of these stories tie together in ways that I wouldn't have thought made sense, but most assuredly do.
There is an unexpectedly happy ending in many ways. We know "whodunnit" because this is a thriller rather than a mystery, and yet there are still some surprises along the way.
An entertaining tale set against the backdrop of both modern-day and 1830s New Orleans.
I started reading this book and honestly couldn't put it down. Even though it is book 4 , you can read and understand what is going on. This story is about Wyatt Thomas a P.I who encounters a ghost and soon finds out that there is a curse that connects him to a French aristocrat and he has to go and break the curse in old New Orleans and he has to do it before midnight New Years eve .
This book is full of voodoo, ghosts and time travel oh yeah and throw the mob in there for some added fun. The twists and turns will keep you on the edge of your seat as you read. I was reading well into the night.
I loved the characters , especially Rosalie and Mama and the other voodoo priestess, they are very colorful and sometimes scary in the way they are . Wyatt is a character that you wanted either hug or punch. But in the end you cheer for him and pray that he can get the curse broken. The author writes such likable and realistic characters that you want to love and cheer for. You know these characters are hurting or going to feel hurt as you read.
This is a good old fashion read which has it all sex, magic. and curses . If you want to read a book that will take you away to a place in time. You will like this book. The twists and turns alone will keep reading , and keep you engaged until the end. This will be the book for you. You really want to find out if Wyatt breaks the curse and get back. Just start this book early in the day cause you will be reading well into the night.
I was really starting to think I was going to like this book. Promising intrigue, ghosts, mystery but about a quarter of the way in I gave up. It's just about two guys chasing tail and more about them chasing different tail. Seriously? Did you get lost and forget you were writing a novel not a frat boys diary? It's a shame because he has a good start to what could have been a good story. But now I'll never know because you lost me at "cuddled up to me in the backseat" or some such nonsense!
My new fav.. I read this in two days.It keeps you so interested that you even think about it when you are not reading it and can't read more. I am so reading the whole series
Mr Eric gives us a very enjoyable, intriguing, slightly disturbing and perfectly constructed story that has plenty of ghosts and magic for everyone. The story is woven around ghosts in the city of New Orleans. We get to learn about the Mafia that existed there and the new generation that dominates the life there. For people that have no knowledge about Jazz there is a chance to learn a lot here. But most of all for the horror fans this book is a treat. It covers ghosts and black magic quite well.
The lead is Wyatt, a friendly intelligent man who has a past of failed relationships with women. He has many friends in various fields. A professor who is also a practicing witch, an FBI agent who is a big time womaniser, a retired agent, a bar tender that seems to take more care of him than anyone else. All characters have a reason to be around and they bring about more characters that make the story complete.
The story follows Wyatt and his journey to fix his life and this involves time travel. Unlike a few stories the time travel bit is handled very well. The period that we are journey to is one that involves slavery. I particularly felt the description of the slavery methods and the process involved in selling them was exceptionally well handled and moved me. It takes a very good writer to bring out just the right amount of emotions and not wring ones heart too much.
If you have the time to enjoy a good book and are open to something informative you should definitely try it. Though this book is not strongly of the horror genre it has just the right mix of horror, suspense and fun. If you are an extreme horror fan you may not be satisfied because there is no gore but you will not be disappointed. For everyone else this book is just right. There is not much objectionable language but talks of suicide or murder may affect children so would be best for kids above age 14.
Overall this book is a very enjoyable read and personally I would like to learn from it and improve my writing skills. It would not disappoint you. There are plenty of girls popping up every now and then and everyone seem to be significant so there s plenty of girl power. For time travel lovers and people who loved movies like Midnight in Paris this one is for you.
(I received a free copy of this book in exchange for a review).

This is another book I would ideally give 3.5 stars to, but since I can't give half stars, I'll leave it at 3.
I really did like the blurb of this book. It sounded really intriguing. I was a bit disappointed, however, that the book didn't seem to dwell much on that storyline, instead following several different storylines. Although it was still a good read, I got confused a few times with the characters.
There did seem to be a lot of romantic pairing off, but I was a bit disappointed that some of the developments weren't really shown. I did like Wyatt as a character, but I felt that the story shouldn't have switched between first and third person. It was hard to be in Wyatt's head and then to end up in third person.
I really liked the parts with Jason and Wyatt Travelling. I felt the differences between the two places were made really clear and that the Travelling theme (similar to reincarnation) worked particularly well.
I was a bit disappointed by how the curse was resolved, though. I felt there could have been so much more explored. The horn and wrongful execution storyline were interesting, but they seemed to be much more explored than the paranormal elements.
The paranormal elements in the book were pretty interesting as well. I did notice quite a few errors in this book, mostly punctuation ones. Although it was part of a series, I did find it easy to follow and read.
I would probably read the other books in this series at some point in the future, just to see what will happen with the characters.
New Orleans' French Quarter is known for lust, voodoo and murder. Wyatt Thomas was New Orleans favorite sleuth. Oh,How I've always wanted to visit New Orleans and Mardi Gras. I believe the old portion of New Orleans would be fascinating and the author made it just that way. The book tells of the days of the French or Spanish rule, slavery and yellow fever. Wyatt Thomas, P.I. as he travels back (circa 1840) finds
help from the Queen of Voodoo, Marie Laveau and others, Sanite Dede, Rosalie, Bras Coupe. The most feared of all were Doctor John and Marie Laveau. Wyatt Thomas told his business partner, voodoo mambo Mama Mulate, of an encounter with a ghost. Voodoo mambo puts him in a spell and brings forth the ghost. She soon learns there is a curse connected with him and an Aristocrat that has been dead a long time. What will happen to Wyatt? Will they all be doomed forever? Will they find their way back to old New Orleans? They have to in order to get the curse lifted before New Year's Eve, but will they make it?
The book is full of woven webs, surprises, suspense, curses, voodoo and of course, the BLACK MAGIC WOMAN.
I was given a complimentary copy of BLACK MAGIC WOMAN from the author, Eric Wilder for my view of the book. No other compensation took place.
Anthony "Tony" Nicosia is private investigator working an unusual case involving cornet. Frankie Castalano only knows that his father hid the cornet from him refusing to give it back to him. Tony doesn't have the slightest clue where to begin searching for the cornet. Wyatt Thomas is another private investigator that's suffering from depression. Wyatt goes to Mama Mulate for company and some advice. Wyatt is being haunted by spirit that needs to have curse lifted and he's the only one that can do it. Wyatt only has until midnight New Year's Eve to reverse the curse. Can these investigators fix each of their tasks? Your answers await you in Black Magic Woman.
I just love this series! The story and characters are compelling, fascinating, down to earth, and magical. Reading these books is like getting a taste of New Orleans and making you hungry for a visit of your own. I look forward to more from this author in the future.
This book is a riveting, suspenseful novel. It is creative, imaginative, and full of twists, turns, action, and interesting characters to keep you involved and your interest at a high level. It is about a PI who sees a ghost and he finds out that it is a curse that connects him to a French aristocrat. He and the aristocrat will be connected forever unless he can lift the curse before midnight on New Year's Eve. This will keep you on the edge of your seat as you read it. When I started I read until I finished it. It was a great read. I wanted to give more that 5 starts but as you see 5 is the limit. I highly recommend it to all.
