Trapped in a life she never chose, Arien, a young sorceress, has one dream: to escape Firelands, the land of sorcerers, and become a Martyshyar—one of the legends, the elites, the protectors of the continent.
But the price of entry is a series of trials where failure could mean death, and success will demand her very soul.
Thrust into the crucible, Arien is immediately caught between two men who threaten to shatter her resolve.
There is Zanyar, an enigmatic and lethally skilled sorcerer whose smoldering eyes see straight through her defenses.
Then there is Darian, a steadfast warrior whose warm smile offers a friendship she has never known, a safe harbor that makes her question the very armor she has built around her heart.
As she braves the lethal challenges and grapples with her own desires and dreams, Arien uncovers ancient sorceries and devastating secrets that threaten to unravel the continent.
To claim her own destiny, Arien must decide who to trust, what to sacrifice, and whether the dream she's pursuing is worth the price. For in the trial of her life, the dream she’s chasing could be the one thing that can destroy her.
My name is Sara Hatami, and I've been writing stories since I was a teenager, mostly for the internet's amusement. By day, I navigate the wild world of tech and finance—because, you know, someone has to pay the bills. But my true north has always been fantasy, ever since Tolkien, Rowling, and later GRRM hijacked my imagination.
"The Legend of Nohvan" has been my latest two-year obsession, and I have just released the first book in the series, "The Ninth Element"
When I'm not battling spreadsheets and Python programming or mythical beasts, you can usually find me in the kitchen, testing new flavors (sometimes successfully, sometimes... not so much). And I absolutely love to travel! Exploring new places, experiencing different cultures, and seeing the world beyond my New York City apartment is what I cherish. Whether it's a quick escape or a faraway journey, I'm always ready for the next grand adventure.
Ok, let me just start off by saying….I CANNOT put this book down. I’m falling asleep at midnight while holding this book cause I don’t want to stop reading. I don’t want it to END!!!!!!
This indie author is one to watch, I’m glad I took a chance cause she’s going to absolutely get picked up. Sign me up for book 2. Les go. I need more. This book is on KU for FREE too but for us physical bookworms…The Cover? On. Mutha Flippin. Point. If you like black sleek covers like me, this is your sign. Just buy it. I’m in love with it. The sizing isn’t mass market, thank the heavens, cause I refuse to buy smaller print books 👀😂.
I was excited to completely dive into this fantasy world where the decisions could mean success and her soul or….death for her failure. It was hard to put down and as each trial gets revealed, the plot gets thicker.
On to said plot and writing style…yes. Just absolutely yes. A very clean fantasy with elements of magic, romanticism, and trials. This is a why choose multi-love interest scenario that focuses on self growth, self doubt and unmasking of emotions. Friendships are forged, alliances are made and nothing is as it seems. A strong FMC POV rolls us through this story. Safe enough for your pre-teen with slight spice at 1/2 🌶️. 4.5 ⭐️.
Do yourself a favor and take a chance like I did. This author is going to be the next big thing. Mark my words.
I didn't know I needed a sorcorer & sorceress fantasy romance until I picked this one up and WOW! It's one of those books that made me feel transported to a new world. Finished it in about 24 hours - even though I can't pronouce any of the names or places it was a really easy story to follow and kept me turning the pages! After DNFing a few books recently this felt like a breath of fresh air!
This has got to be the best fantasy with romance Trial I have read since the Hunger Games (not that the HG is romance in any shape or form), so bravo to the author
I am not saying this book is perfect, but what I am saying is that I couldn't put it down and that I enjoyed the trials, the characters, and the female lead...shoking!!!
And dare I say it! This book is so much better than a lot of Romantacy traditional books published - Silver Elite, Shield of Sparrows, Fourth Wing, Quicksilver......who said that? -
And can we take a moment to admire that well-fitting gorgeous cover?
and that is why I am giving it 5 stars....trusting that the author has a lot of potential to give us a banger in the next book
⚜ rating: 4/5 🌟🌟🌟🌟 but I will give it 5 stars for being better than many of the published fantasies out there ⚜Genre: High Fantasy with a romantic sub-plot ⚜Theme: Trials ⚜Targeted audience: YA ⚜Characters: Arien, Darian, Zanyar ⚜side Characters: Bahador (love this playboy), Faelas ⚜Representation: non ⚜ driven: I think it's a 50/50 character-Plot ⚜Pace: medium ⚜TW: child abandonment - murder - attempted murder ⚜ tropes: Forced proximity - Love Triangle - opposite attract- hidden identity - forbidden magic betrayal ⚜ POV: One-sided First Person ⚜ spice: non - one hot kissing scene though ⚜standalone: I don't think so...but you could say this stands by itself ⚜Ending: unresolved ⚜Book read: KU
Although the book starts with your typical Romance Fantasy tropes - A young woman with magic who has to lower down her abilities for the male ego goes into an Academy-ish to earn her place among the elites, aka the Martysh defenders of the realm - because she never had anyone by her side and she wants to feel like she belongs somewhere. She has the attention of the sotic Golden Prince and the dark, dashing protector from an opposing realm, each with secrets of their own - oh, whom would she ever choose! Together, they uncover a hidden secret that could change the fate of their kingdom - the story also stands on its own in so many ways.
1- The trials are non like I have ever read. They are not just about physical strength. Most of the time, they are about wit and being smart. Something our heroin Arien excelled in. I loved seeing her bettering most of the misogynistic contenders.
2- Yes there was a romantic subplot, yes there was a love triangle, but the choice Arien made at the end left me satisfied and clapping for her. You Go Girl :)
3- I loved that it had a tiny inspiration from Stardust...Something I never saw in any recent fantasy books.
4- I loved that there was no "she trained for a little while and yet she bested the best of them" ridiculous plotline. Yes Arien trained in the sword for weeks and months, but she never defeated anyone with a sword. she relied on her already their strenght - her brains
5- And that brings me to the thing I loved most about this book: Arien. I always say that when you give me a one-sided POV from the FL, the FL should carry the book. And Ariedn excelled. She is flawed in her need for approval, she is lovable in her helping others even those who do not deserve, she is infuriating in her infatuation, and she is an icon for her beliefs and self-journey. I loved reading her.
As I mentioned, this book would earn a 4 star from me because what I didn't like was the overly descriptive especially every time Arien sees Zaryan. I cannot tell you how much my eyes rolled every time she described how beautiful he is and how perfect his body is and how magnificent his stamina is ....Ok! I get it! The book also goes into detail describing every character. I do not think we needed that. Sometimes less is more and it is nice to leave things for the imagination
There is also the over-dramatic self-lamentation. And this is the problem of writing from one POV. you get to fill the pages with something. So there were these repetitive "Oh I was never chosen and I always get abandoned" internal monologues.
However, this was very enjoyable and I cannot wait for book 2 so please please please Sara drop it soon ≈==============================
7% in: very intriguided. I like that there is no info dumb about the world but rather a clue here and there. this makes me engaged and very curious
trials?! OK...no problem ...i guess we'll always have those
ah yes! the otherworldly gorgeous golden-haired prince who makes your breath stop 😉 I wonder when will the dark tall and mysterious rival appear?
16% in: its very exciting, but so far its nothing i haven't seen before. The underdog abandoned FL living in a world of restraint trying to make something out of her life. I am still waiting to be impressed by her
the problem with one-sided POV is the fillers. You need that 300+ pgs but its only from one characters so you start repeating the same thing I get it. He's ignoring you I get it. he's gorgeous and you can't stop looking at him I get it, you were abandoned
let's see where we are going next?
25%: I'm liking these trials
33%: nice. sometimes when the book says " a month passed", it jumps immediately to what is happening now! I liked that her Arien is talking about the routine that went into the month+
43%: Oh, im really liking these trials, and im loving Arien at the moment. I just hope that her desperate need for affection does not end being her downfall.
I absolutely loved this book! This was the perfect fantasy read that I needed to help me get out of my reading slump. Such a unique fantasy plot and loved the world building and the complex characters. I loved getting to know the main characters and stepping into the world with them. This story follows a young girl who’s a sorceress as she decided she wants to leave the Firelands and become a protector of the continent. You get to see her compete in trials that will determine if she is able to make it into the army. Reading this character go through the intense trials was such a fun experience. In a lot of ways this book gave off divergent/hunger games feels in certain parts of the book and I loved that. I loved the friendships created in this book and the self discovery aspect of this story. If you’re looking for a very unique and exciting fantasy read, this one’s for you! 💛🧚🏼✨
DNF @ 30% (with so much appreciation to the author for the gifted copy!) I tried picking this up a few times but couldn’t seem to fully connect with the story or characters. It’s clear how much heart went into this book, I think the story has a lot of potential, it just wasn’t the right fit for me personally
TL/DR: An amazing start to a new fantasy series. If you liked The Jasad Heir, give this a shot.
Possibly some minor spoilers, so proceed with caution. The following is my honest review of The Ninth Element by Sara Hatami.
This book is an incredible start to a new series that follows a young sorceress called Arien as she escapes the highly patriarchal region of Firelands to become a defender of the realm. However, as to be expected, she comes to find out that not everything is quite so black-and-white, as she’s forced to reconcile her preconceived view of the world with the stark, and confusing, reality in front of her.
This book has: ⭐️ A FMC that is far from perfect at everything she does, but learns and grows throughout the story ⭐️ The beginnings of a found family (Bahador ❤️❤️❤️❤️) ⭐️ A brooding and aloof MMC *AND* a golden-retriever-ish MMC, both of which are very “touch her and die” ⭐️ The beginnings of a love triangle ⭐️ Beautiful and intriguing world-building ⭐️ Trials and competition ⭐️ An interesting magic system ⭐️ Slow, slow burn
There are no trigger warnings aside from some violence in the trials. No real spice, no insta-love. Ends on a cliffhanger. If you read and loved The Jasad Heir by Sara Hashem, you will love The Ninth Element by Sara Hatami.
I do feel like the book kind of just ends, but it’s not jarring enough to prevent me from needing the second book ASAP. One other review I saw said that a glossary would be helpful and I agree.
Thank you Sara, for reaching out and getting me a copy of The Ninth Element. I can’t wait for the next one!! 4.5⭐️
This story follows a young girl who is born a sorceress and sent to the Firelands to perfect her craft, as are all children in the Asyrion Continent who show any magical abilities. Even though she is part of the small percent of female sorcerers at Firelands, she decides to follow her dream and earns a chance to compete to become a "Maryshyar" - protectors of the continent.
The world building of this continent was wonderful! Complex hierarchies, unique magic systems... I was pulled right in. (Some of the names & places would possibly be aided by a glossary of sorts, but then my memory isn't as good as it once was!)
We see Arien compete in intense trials that will determine if she is able to make it into this army; knowing failure could be death, but success will demand her soul.
I really liked the friendships created as Arien learns who to trust, and uncovers secrets that threaten the continent. The characters were nicely developed, and whereas I'm not always a fan of a love triangle it was well done, and I did enjoy this story.
For me, the self-discovery aspect of this story was the overriding theme, and it was handled nicely... with a lot of heart.❤️
Sara Hatami has such a unique writing style! I enjoyed the way she phrased things, enough to stop and think: what an interesting way of saying that- or wow, that was clever but also funny..
Had I not known, I would never have guessed this is a debut indie published book, as it is just as well- written, well-paced and polished as most... and better than a lot!!
It ends on a bit of a cliffhanger, but I'm invested in the story and hope to read book two soon! This is a 4.5 * for me, with many thanks to Sara for so kindly providing me with a physical copy.🌹
I don’t normally enjoy comparing books positively to popular romantasies (because I think the market is overcrowded) but if you enjoyed Fourth Wing and wanted more in-depth characterization, better world-building, and quite frankly, one of the best love triangles I’ve seen in awhile, this will be a good one for you!
Hatami’s writing—especially when it comes to scene-setting and description, is truly wonderful. I’m very, very picky about writing in my fantasy romance and while this did often fall into the trap of first person present tense POV, I think it’s absolutely steps above your average, generic romantasy.
It sounds like I hate romantasy, I don’t. It should be a genre I love, but is so often just smut with a sprinkle of plot.
This is not one of those books.
There’s a plot and it’s a good one. The main female character’s journey—I loved it! I ate it up. The ending is not what you expect and I appreciated it so much. The side characters, too, are so well done and each have their own personality.
My rating was mainly down to pacing, but I have no doubt that book two will alleviate any previous misgivings I had about book one.
I loved every second reading this except for the glaring fact that there is a love triangle which I hate right down to my very core because I always root for the better man and the FMC usually ends up with the toxic one.
This book almost lost me 70% in because the author was starting to butter Zaryan up. Darian IS the ONLY right choice obviously!!! The Izo trio actually reminded me of the Illyrian boys in ACOTAR so I’m a bit biased here BUT y’all can’t deny that Darian is the better love interest. Zaryan was just being creepy all throughout, tbh! And I don’t like brooding MMCs.
Oh, I like the FMC too. She wasn’t annoying unlike most FMCs. Lol.
Yup. We’re reading the second book when it comes out.
Unique trials and really well written love triangle. I wish there was a little more magic considering our main character is a sorceress but I have high hopes for book 2!
Let me just say: I inhaled this book like it was the last piece of garlic bread at a fantasy buffet. The Ninth Element is one of those stories that doesn’t just build a world.. it throws you into it, ties a cloak around your shoulders, and yells “survive or die, girlie.”
Sara Hatami’s debut is unapologetically epic. From the moment Arien steps onto the page, you know she’s a force. She's ambitious, stubborn, and refreshingly competent. No chosen-one fluff here, just a girl with magic and a mission, fighting for her place in the legendary Martysh, the elite peacekeeping force of the Asyrion Continent.
think The Hunger Games meets The Poppy War, but make it sorcery. There’s blood, betrayal, strategy, and just enough mysticism to keep you flipping pages like your life depends on it. The pacing is sharp, the tension never lets up, and the worldbuilding? Rich. We’re talking complex hierarchies, and unique magical systems.
You know im a SUCKER for love triangles....and there may just be one brewing in this story... *wink wink*
The payoff is great. The author is one of a kind. Thank you for much for writing such a special book. Cannot wait for the next one!
What could have been a fun bit of escapism is marred by stereotyped characters and uneven prose. We jump blithely from flowery metaphor (the council members sitting in judgement, like four grumpy pigeons on a fence post) to blatant cuteness (“The grand ballroom lived up to its name; it was grand!”) with no justification for the change in voice. The characters themselves are either horribly self absorbed, like our heroine, or classically tortured and complex, like the pretty boys who surround her. The only characters who seem genuine and promising are left on the sidelines, since our heroine is far too busy worrying about herselfabout.
The premise is intriguing. Unfortunately, the outcome is disappointing.
Disclaimer: I was provided with a publisher’s copy in exchange for my fair and honest review.
The Ninth Element is amazing, my favorite book this year! I seriously couldn't put it down. I love the way the characters in this epic fantasy novel grow throughout the story, and I liked the protagonist Arien. She's smart and funny, but by no means perfect, and struggles with relationships. This story has a lot of heart and feelings change and progress at a believable pace. I truly would never guess this is an indy published book, it is just as polished and well written as many bestsellers... actually better than most in my opinion. Fans of Rebecca Yarro's Iron Flame / Empyrean series and Carissa Broadbent's Crowns of Nyaxia series will absolutely love this! I hope Ms. Hatami will publish the second book soon!
This was a kindle book that I won a couple of days ago in a goodreads giveaway. I am always grateful when I win a goodreads giveaway book because they are always a tricky winning situation. This fantasy novel was a very delightful read because ut goes to show how brave someone can be when it is very well needed. We are introduced to a young Lady named Arien who is a sorceress who has dreams of leaving her homeland and going out to achieve bigger and better things. However, the tasks at hand prove to be a challenge and if she doesn't pay close attention she could end up losing it all.
The Ninth Element is a impressive debut! An engaging, emotionally rich fantasy with elegant writing and immersive worldbuilding. The vividly crafted setting draws you in, while Arien, the sharp and relatable protagonist, anchors the story with her authentic struggles and growth. Her personal journey, filled with conflict, evolving relationships, and heartfelt self-discovery, feels both compelling and real. The plot moves at a brisk, dynamic pace, blending romance, peril, and character development seamlessly. A fantastic start to the series. I’m eagerly awaiting the next installment!
This story is about a FMC sorceress wanting to find a place where she belongs. After being neglected since birth, she slowly tries to find a place but is always questioning everyone motives. In the end she finally chooses what she wants and deserves.
I love that the FMC isn’t perfect either. She has her doubts, insecurities, and desire to prove herself to everyone around her but also to herself, she is sympathetic and reliable.
Along the way there are trails that are also well thought out. Some are physical and others are mental. Each has a place within the book to help the FMC grow.
There are two MMC, both breathtakingly gorgeous, but there is a clear favourite in my books. (Hello, Darian!!)
I really hope there another book to continue on this beautiful story.
This book did a lot of things well, such as unique trials and a fantastic love triangle. However, it desperately needed a glossary. Perhaps there's one in the physical book, or one will be added to the ebook, but as of the time of me finishing it I could not locate one. So many times I found myself lost by the terms or trying to picture the place some of the contestants came from. It prevented me from being able to fully immerse myself in the story.
The story itself was good. However, it definitely felt drawn out at times. However, I’m happy with the choice that Arien made at the end. It’ll be interesting to see what happens in book two because after everything that happened. There has to. Though I hope something really exciting happens that forces her into Darians path.
Intense, character-driven fantasy. A fierce woman enters deadly trials to become a Protector—and what follows is a journey of resilience, betrayal, and self-discovery.
Rich world-building, layered characters, and a magic system that actually makes sense. I loved the emotional depth and the subtle romance!
A fun adventurous fantasy, with a touch of romance and no spice. A nice buffer inbetween books with a cool sorcery based magical system, and a couple hot main male characters to keep you interested.
This book was a fun read and a compelling start to a series. The world-building was great, and the magic system was interesting. The main character's journey of self-discovery was well done. There's a lot left to unravel in this world, which leaves me excited for the next book.
READ. THIS. BOOK. Just do it. Wow. Once I started reading it I was immediately pulled into this magical world. It had me questioning every person and their motives, discovering if they were her ally or her enemy. For our FMC failure is not an option and the stakes are high so she has to trust in the right people. It seems we may have a love triangle on our hands and I don’t hate it. Following along as our girl learns to to accept herself is one of the best parts though. When I came to the end I had to do a double take that I truly was at the end because I needed and wanted more. Immediately. Sara left us with so many questions and now I am anxiously awaiting any development and news of the next one to come in the series. (Forever stalking her socials to find out!) I had read this one on kindle, but now I’ll also be buying another copy for my shelf because it will definitely be one I reread.
So refreshing, addictive, and just overall a huge yes from me.
From page one, I was not able to put the book down. Sara Hatami has an amazing way with words, she is a true wordsmith. The story has many twists and turns with fantasy that hooks the reader. The story follows the coming of age of Arien the main character. I would recommend this book to readers 10-100.
Driven by the dream of a life beyond the one she hopes to escape, a young sorceress risks her life in a series of deadly trials.
Arien wants nothing more than to escape Firelands, a realm of sorcerers where she’s never felt welcome. Her sights are set on becoming a Martyshyar: one of the legends, the elite protectors of the continent. To her, it’s not just a dream, it’s the only way out of her living nightmare.
The trials aren’t Arien’s only challenge; she is immediately caught between two men who threaten to shatter her resolve.
Zanyar, an enigmatic and lethally skilled sorcerer with eyes that see straight through her defences and Darian, a steadfast warrior whose warm smile offers a friendship she has never had.
As she braves the challenges, Arien uncovers ancient sorceries and dark secrets that threaten to unravel the continent.
To claim her destiny, Arien must decide who to trust, what to sacrifice, and whether the dream she's pursuing is worth the price.
The Ninth Element is precisely what it is set out to be: an epic fantasy. This story had all the necessary elements needed for a great fantasy: a world with unique cultures, diverse characters and an interesting magic system. Immediately, from the very beginning, the reader is immersed in this world almost to the point of obsession. It is a difficult story to have to set aside. The main character is incredibly likable, so it doesn’t take long for the reader to connect with her and truly understand her emotions. You don’t even have to relate. For the main character, this is a deeply emotional journey, which significantly enhances stories similar to these fantasies, allowing the reader to connect with the character from the outset. The most compelling part of this story is the character development. Arien, her character, continues to grow throughout the story. The end will have you shocked and impressed—honestly, a spectacular ending.
The trials play a significant role in the storyline. They are unique, well-thought-out, and will have the reader grasping for more, and the trials create the perfect atmosphere. Especially if you are a reader who loves the gloomy, dreary atmosphere, you will find it here.
As for Arien’s connection with Zanyar and Darian, the connection between Darian and Arien felt stronger and more exciting, and the reader yearns for more. They were strong together; everything between those two was great. As for Zanyar, there scenes weren’t as intense. They felt more repetitive, so it wasn't easy to thoroughly enjoy their scenes, especially since Arien and Darian’s were so good. Near the ending, the scenes between Zanyar and Arien felt less repetitive, so you feel more engaged with that relationship. Overall, these two relationships were both intriguing.
This was a fantastic fantasy that will have any reader hooked on the story. It is worth the read.
Sara Hatami's The Ninth Element is a promising debut for fans of epic romantasy. It's a book for readers who appreciate detailed world-building and a character-driven plot.
Worldbuilding The political tensions between the provinces, the history of the Daeva war, and the rules of the Ahira sorcerers are well-thought-out. I enjoyed the level of detail concerning the Asyrion Union and the lore of Martysh, which shows a clear appreciation for the genre.
Characters Arien has a slower, more deliberate character arc, and you can understand her struggles and triumphs. Hatami sets up an interesting slow burn dynamic with two very different love interests. The romantic subplot adds another layer to the story.
Conclusion Overall, this is a solid and engaging read that lays a good foundation for a new series. If you enjoy fantasy with a focus on world-building and character development, The Ninth Element might be for you. I am curious to see where the next installment will go.
So I read all this just for her to want Darian, I mean I do like the choice even the other guy called him her mate so it clear who she will be with. he is better than the other guy but I don t like useless love triangles 🙄 the other guy didn’t have anything to offer her that helps her becomes a bad ass FMC so why was he a love interest in the first place 🙄. If you want to write a love triangle make sure it is very impossible for the readers to choose the MMC we like because the both offer the FMC value to become the best version of herself or it is a “pick one” instead I expected the ending tbh but it’s good she choos herself cause she needed it she was becoming annoying
I like the book might pick up book 2 to just know for sure she is with DARIAN !
