Cloud Puppy—part puppy, part cloud, and all adorable—goes on summer adventures with her friends in this third book in a delightful graphic chapter book series that’s Narwhal and Jelly meets The Amazing World of Gumball!
Cloud Puppy and her friends start their summer vacation at the local amusement park! When Mossquatch shares he doesn’t really like big roller coasters, Cloud Puppy makes it her secret mission to help him overcome his fear. After all, everyone knows roller coasters are fun, not scary!
But as Cloud Puppy, Jack, and Berry Rose line up for the biggest roller coaster, Cloud Puppy suddenly feels afraid—even wishing she were sitting out comfortably with Mossquatch. To keep spending time with her friends, she should act like she’s still having fun and conquer her fear…right?
I'm an illustrator and author who grew up in the horse state (Lousiville, KY) and now reside in eternal winter (Chicago, IL.) Represented by Thao Le of Sandra Dijkstra Literary Agency. I've written many books you have not read yet, since they are scheduled for future publishing dates. Keep a look out for I Am A Wolf brought to you in 2019 by Dial and a secret children's book that will be revealed later also brought to you by Dial in the distant year of 2020!
Cloud Puppy is a brightly colored exploration of anxieties and inner voices and how friend groups navigate them. Cloud Puppy is a young poodle-dragon who lives in the sky and has playdates with friends. There’s Mosquatch, a quietly empathetic and perceptive rock monster; Berry Rose, a bear unicorn who is the group’s positive hype-man; and a competitive, daring reindeer named Jack. Over the series, the friends visit a comiccon, play video games, do cosplay, and more while confronting fears about what others will think of their appearances, preferences, and behaviors.
As The Pup Days of Summer opens, Cloud Puppy, bored at home, agonizes over the friends’ summer dispersal plans. Camps, family trips, and other obligations have them spending time apart, but then Jack shares that his dad works at Dragonetta Land. This enormous traveling theme park is named for a warrior princess from a TV show, who left them all starstruck at the comiccon back in Book 1. The crew is reunited but Cloud Puppy finds a need to balance their fear of going on rides with the expectations of the excited Berry Rose and Jack, and questions the confident Mosquatch, who seems to prefer arcade time to some of the big rides.
Kayla Leigh Miller’s style draws from manga tropes. The surreal cuteness, or kawaii, signifies innocence and simplicity, as exemplified by Pikachu or Hello Kitty. As plot is secondary to the emotional weight the characters feel, there is also kaogei or face acting, common in anime and manga to display reactions. Both serve the overflow of emotional worry and resolution, such as when Cloud Puppy hears the screams while waiting in line for the ride Turtle Trooper Mission: Apocalypse; or Jack’s anxiety over not being able to win at carnival games. After the main story, Miller also adds short story comics to the end of the books, reinforcing the uplifting and instructive ideas. Link to complete review: https://ysbookreviews.wordpress.com/2...
THE PUP DAYS OF SUMMER is a delightful new adventure for Cloud Puppy and friends. Going into summer, Cloud Puppy is sad that she and her friends won't have as much time together due to vacations and camps. However, she has an idea... when they are all back, they should go to Coral Orchard Floating Island Festival, a seasonal festival that is off the coast of their town with cool rides and roller coasters. However, once it comes time to ride the big roller coaster, Cloud Puppy is feeling very nervous! She must navigate this feeling with her friends to be able to enjoy the festival.
What I loved: This is a very colorful and relatable graphic novel. Trying new things is an experience all children will be able to understand - and the nerves and fears that come with it. The big roller coaster is a scary thing, especially when she has not done it before. Her nerves and fears come through the story easily, and readers will be able to see the expression on her face and the way she handles this in front of her friends.
Luckily, her friends know how to support and comfort Cloud Puppy, understanding and appreciating her limits, plus allowing her to sit out if she needs to. She learns that she doesn't need to hide her fear or push through it to make her friends happy, a lesson that will be well-received by young readers. Kindness and support go a long way!
The illustrations are fantastic with lots of color and expressive characters that capture each scene well. The text is clear and easily attributable in speech bubbles, making it easy to follow. This works well for advancing independent readers and young middle grade readers, who can also relate to the characters and story.
Final verdict: THE PUP DAYS OF SUMMER is a relatable and entertaining graphic novel that will work well for older independent readers and young MG readers who will also enjoy the themes of friendship and summer!
Please note that I received an ARC. All opinions are my own.
This is my favorite volume. It combines two of my top super top favorite things, (plus cute/kawaii art): Summer (summer camp with best friends) and Amusement Park!! SO relatable, not only is the art on each page therapeutic goodness, it just puts a smile on our faces... We have relatable feelings and fears, thoughts and doubts that true friends can ease. The chapters are satisfying and has more than one core stoty. Congrats to the author for this lovely summer adventure. P. S the detail of the scenery in some of tge pages makes us stare at it for a long time just to appreciate the extra love and find new drawings and fun things. Look at the map 🤯
This was an adorable kids graphic novel. I loved the art style and color palette as well as the overall story of this one. In this volume we follow Cloud Puppy and her friends as they go to an amusement park, festival, as well as go camping. This was such a cute book with a great message and kids are sure to love it.
The Pup Days of Summer by Kelly Leigh Miller was a hit for its humor & relatability. Cloud Puppy’s attempt to help a friend face fears while secretly dealing with her own felt very real for kids. The mix of silly fun & emotional honesty made this one a standout for sparking conversations about bravery & peer pressure.
Love the messaging. There are some fears we have to face, but there are others we can choose to avoid out of personal preference; and it's not our business to make someone feel bad for not wanting to engage with something they find scary
My kiddos loved this book so much. They spent a lot of time looking over all the pages and pointing out all of the fun background images. I loved the messages in the different stories. We can't wait to circle back to the first two books!
