Kilts and Quilts #3

Some Like It Scottish

Rate this book
In the delightful new Kilts and Quilts novel by the author of To Scotland with Love and Meet Me in Scotland, the Real Men of Scotland are waiting. And it’s a match made in Gandiegow…

Kit Woodhouse’s matchmaking business is such a success, she’s expanding to the Highlands of Scotland where the hot, prosperous, and kilted are anxious to connect. Now, looking to fill her stable with eligible bachelors, Kit’s arrived in Gandiegow to recruit potential Real Men of Scotland. It’s not until she meets her tour guide that she discovers just how real they can be.

With his sexy grin, jeans, and black wellies, Ramsay Armstrong is an unpolished hulk of a Scottish fisherman—and a skeptic when it comes to romance. Not exactly a man of “pairing attributes” when talking marriageable matches, but he does make Kit’s heart beat a little faster. Maybe it’s the scent of the sea in his hair. Maybe it’s the challenge. Maybe it’s the thrill of the unexpected. Then again, maybe it’s love.

Award-winning author Patience Griffin has been writing and sewing her whole life but didn’t discover her love of quilting until her late thirties. She decided the best way to acquire her first quilt was to make one for herself. At nearly the same time, she started commuting three and half hours a day for her dream engineering job. To pass the time on the long drive, she got hooked on audiobooks—especially books with love stories.

Within a couple of years, she was writing stories of her own. It was no surprise to her family and friends when she combined her love of quilting, her small town roots, and her obsession with Scottish romances into novels.

She has gained some recognition with her September 11th Story Quilt which has toured the country as the property of the Pentagon. She has a master's degree in nuclear engineering but spends her days writing stories about hearth and home, and dreaming about the fictional small town of Gandiegow, Scotland.

What happens when you can't get over the fact that a main character is a total douche or did something really douchey?

I like the idea of Some Like it Scottish, but I found the main male character to be such a jerkface jerk at the beginning of the story that I, found it difficult to forgive him, and if I can't forgive him how am I supposed to believe the heroine does?

Ramsey, goes out of his way to destroy Kit's business because it conflicts with what he wants to do. He goes out of his way to undermine her professionally, to make her feel small and generally unwanted, and it works. Yet somehow Ramsay is redeemed by the power of love or Kit's magical boobies or both, turns from his wicked ways, ensures Kit's success, fulfills his dreams and rides off into the sunset wearing nothing but Kit and a kilt.

I almost didn't finish this book because Ramsey was so awful and Kit was so stupid (or entranced by Ramsey's turgid member) that she easily looks past the fact he tried to ruin her and her business.

The rest of the books is lovely, the setting of Scotland is deftly described, side characters are interesting and add depth to the story, while the premise is intriguing. So, if you like books with Scotsmen, descriptive settings and redemption you will probably like this book. I, myself, wanted to push Ramsey into the freezing ocean and give Kit a good shake.

There’s a moment in ‘The Truth About Forever’ where Kristy proclaims a group of guys at a party “undateable,” and they respond that that fact did not stop her from having dated all three of them. To which Kristy replies “That’s how I know!”

This book is unreadable. And that did not stop me from reading the whole thing. That’s how I know.

Some Like It Scottish, Kilts and Quilts #3, by Patience Griffin
Grade: C-

I usually don't pick up the third book in a series that I haven't read but I loved the premise of Some Like It Scottish so much I had to read it. Unfortunately this book did not work for me and wouldn't have even if I had read the series from the beginning. We meet Kit Woodhouse who is setting up a matchmaking business in Scotland after the success of her same business in Alaska. Everything is riding on this business deal for Kit and her family after losing their fortune after her father's death.

Ramsay Armstrong is a fisherman with dreams of having a side business away from his two older brothers. When he reluctantly becomes Kit's driver for her stay he is determined to make sure her business fails. As Ramsay spends more with Kit he soon finds that he can't live without her and must keep her and hyper business in Scotland forever.

I didn't enjoy this book mainly because I found it highly predictable. Ramsey was okay but was such a jerk in the beginning and so cocky through the whole book. It was really a big turn off. While Kit wasn't bad I just thought she could do so much better than Ramsey and she missed so many clues that he was trying to ruin her business.

The only thing that saved the book was the side stories and the quilting club. I found these interactions much more enjoyable and would have liked to have read more about them. I do think I would have liked this series and am thinking about going back and reading some of the previous books since the thing I liked the most was the townspeople. Sadly the main characters did not work for me and this was a big disappointment.

It's a big yawn from me for these books, I'm sorry Ms Griffin.

They are incredibly boring, incredibly tedious in their poor portrayal of a Scottish village, but on the plus side, they sent me to sleep at night quickly!

I won't be finishing the series.

Review brought to you by OBS staff member Andra

I could tell this would be a delightful story that would keep me wanting to truly connect and get to know Ramsay right from the beginning (who wouldn’t when the main male character is a hunky yet “cranky” Scotsman?). In the beginning I felt that good looks were all that Ramsay had to offer, but I was pleasantly surprised as his character along with his hopes and dreams were exposed. A truly good guy with depth and a sense of humor with a very romantic side. Yummy. The nickname he gave Kit was perfect as well…..”Sprite”.

“For the next three cranking months?” Ramsay yelled. Surely, you don’t expect me to play nursemaid for three months to some sappy matchmaker!”
And the depth of character to Kit was awe-inspiring. Her loyalty and commitment to looking after her family was honorable following the death of her father. It wasn’t until quite a ways in that we discover Kit’s motivation to work so hard. Kit is a driven and successful business woman, stretching the boundaries (physically and depth of business) of her company to grow and provide security for her siblings (Harper and Bridget) as well as her mother. But I did wonder…what about her happiness? When would she realize that all the success in the world would mean little if she were not happy?

I also took a shine to Deydie McCracken, that spitfire!

“An old woman, a few inches shorter than Kit, and older than Old Mother Hubbard, stood up and lumbered over to her. I’m Deydie McCracken. A quilter here. And apparently one of the town’s elders. By the scowl on the old woman’s face, she wasn’t here to welcome Kit. She looked ready to forcibly pitch Kit back out into the storm.”
The sense of community was VERY strong. When Ramsay was against the matchmaking business…the whole town got behind him. His antics were certainly chuckle worthy. Then, when he learnt more about Kit and changed his tune, he definitely got the whole town behind him. What they say it true….it takes a village. And Gandiegow is certainly an inviting village, once you are let into the inner circle.

As Kit delves into the lives of the town folk, I became more invested in each and every resident. I loved how she stepped in and looked after Ramsay’s sister in law. As well, I certainly wanted the single women of Gandiegow to find their love interests along with the single women from the states. At times, I wished I was with these gals looking for my own Scotsman!

Some Like It Scottish was an easy, enjoyable read. Throughout the storytelling I really felt as if I was in Scotland among these gorgeous fishermen! When hard times fell, I wished for success and laughed accordingly when things went a bit askew (in a good way and NOT a dangerous way). Whenever I think of Wellies….I will forever chuckle. 

Now having read the second and this third book in the A Kilts and Quilts Novel series, I am certainly going to search out the first in the series and read it! And of course….I will wait with baited breath for the fourth book in the series The Accidental Scot.

Thank you to the Goodreads First Reads giveaways program and Signet Eclipse for a copy of “Some Like It Scottish” by Patience Griffin.

Griffin’s contemporary romance, the third in her Kilts and Quilts series, is full of sweet and funny moments. The quaint Scottish setting of Gandiegow appeals to Kit Woodhouse, an American matchmaker determined to financially support her mother and sisters after her father’s death. But her sexy chauffeur, Ramsay Armstrong, wants her to leave Scotland. He’s nearly saved up the money he needs to buy his own fishing boat, which will help him prove to his older brothers that he’s responsible. As Ramsay drives Kit across Scotland to interview her potential clients, they both begin to realize their feelings for each other.

There was a nice range of lighthearted and deeply emotional scenes here, and the romance between Ramsay and Kit felt authentic. I loved the small-town setting, the incorporation of the quilting group (though most of the characters in it were too undeveloped), and the determination that drove both Kit and Ramsay to achieve their career goals. The Highland games scene was lots of fun. And I appreciated the way that the Armstrong family slowly began to accept and rely on Kit as a presence in their lives.

There were a couple of small things that annoyed me about the story. The first was the unnatural frequency with which other characters referred to Kit as, “the matchmaker,” and Ramsay as, “the chauffeur.” Also, it just doesn’t seem likely that EVERY male character Kit interviewed would want to date/marry her. But overall, this was an incredibly sweet romance with plausible characters, an idyllic Scottish backdrop and of course, lovely quilts and men in kilts.

Kit is determined to keep her matchmaking business going so she can take care of her mother and sisters. She needs this job to put her sisters through school and help her mother, who works part time at an art gallery. Growing up, Kit's family had been rich with multiple homes, but the real estate crash decimated their family. She's in search of wealthy Scottish men to pair up with her wealthy American female clients.

Ramsay is determined to break up this matchmaking scheme and will stoop to low levels to get Kit to leave Gandiegow. His brother hires him out as Kit's driver, making him drive her all over the place searching out male clients. He secretly convinces the men they don't really need a woman. Kit is growing frustrated that the men are backing out on her, and Deydie forcing her to quilt is cutting into the time she has to do her job. The American women are coming to Scotland to meet the men, and Kit has no men.

When Ramsey finds out that Kit needs this job to support her family, he realizes he screwed up. But is there any way to make it right, so late in the game? Not to mention he is so attracted to Kit, and Kit to him, and they both just can't figure out how right they are for each other!

Patience Griffin has brought us another fantastic tale set on the coast of Scotland. Her characters are so great! Previous characters are around as well as some new ones. I pick these books up and can't put them down. And Ms Griffin herself is awesome! After meeting her last year, I promise to read and review everything she has, to get the word out. Because awesome authors need awesome fans, like us :)

My Review:
Some Like it Scottish is another example of opposites attract romance which I am sort of fascinated by because I like to see how the author handles their couples characteristics and personalities and how they mesh together. Patience has handled it beautifully. The book was fun, it was enlightening, it amusing, and I enjoyed watching Ramsay and Kit play off one another and I really liked seeing how Kit's job kind of winds up blowing up in her face. How do you hook up a guy with someone else knowing that you're having feelings for said guy? Do you do your job or do you come out with the truth and tell him how you feel? I really had a good time reading Some Like it Scottish.

Ramsey Armstrong was the youngest of the three Armstrong brothers who made their living as fishermen as their fathers before them. John, the eldest had contracted with Kit Woodhouse to drive her around Scotland collecting affluent bachelors for her American clientele to meet. The people of the village named her the matchmaker and the women were not happy about her plan.

Ramsey was an easy going, breathtaking Scot who wanted to buy his own boat and begin his career. Marriage was not on his radar and until he had his own boat it never would be. Ramsey was shocked when John told him that he would drive the matchmaker around as the money was needed for repairing the family boat.

Ramsey decided that he would get rid of the matchmaker within a few days and then life would be back to normal. He subjected Kit to every indignity and sabotaged all her efforts to meet eligible men for the meeting in the village.

Along the way Ramsey's plan backfired. Kit won over his family and the people of the village with her kindness. She confided in Ramsey that she was investing everything she had in this "Men of Scotland" project to pay rent, schooling and all other bills for her mother and two sisters. Her father had drowned in his yacht, having one last bottle of champagne before the yacht was repossessed by creditors. Ramsey realized that Kit was not the spoiled socialite he believed she was.

Ramsey finally got his boat and and proposed to Kit. She said no and told him she was going back to America. The boat that he put all his savings into sunk. None of Ramsey's goals were successful.

What would happen next?

This is one of those books where I had to stop and think about how I wanted to rate it. It went a little slowly for me; I kept resisting the urge to skim and I definitely wasn't so overwhelmed that I couldn't put it down. At the same time, I couldn't give up on it because I loved the small town and its cast of characters.

This book also hit all of my weak spots. Small town, check. Scottish men, check. Feisty heroine, check. Brooding sexy alpha, check. The overall writing was excellent, and the plot was fun. It was most definitely worth reading it, especially for the endearing characters and great setting.

Even if Some Like It Scottish didn't scream at me to love it, I find myself looking into the rest of the series. The world built was so refreshing and lovely that I want to spend more time there. The writing was smooth and well done. I'm not sure what it was that didn't make this one pop for me, but hopefully it's just me, because this was an adorable and steamy ride. ~ George, 3 stars

I visited Edinburgh in 2014 and completely fell in love with Scotland, thus, I had high hopes for enjoying this book. I gritted my teeth and finished it, but will not be looking for any more of Ms. Griffin's 'Scottish' books. I detest it when the lead female is portrayed as doing nothing but waffling back and forth, constantly misunderstanding. How could such a 'successful businesswomen' be so stupid and not catch on to Ramsey's attempts to sabotage. Had a little shade of Jane Austen's Sense & Sensibility going on with Kit. I am not a delicate flower-grew up in a house full of guys, but some of the language in this was just 'SO 12-year-old-boy-fixated-on-sex'--tasteless and crass. (I guess it was supposed to be 'Real Man' talk.) And how sad to portray all of the woman of Gandiegow as either domineering or dominated. yuck.

This is the first book I've read in the series and I enjoyed it immensely. Kit, a woman burdened with responsibilities since her father's death and Ramsey a serious man who like being the twon clown. Their romance was unexected to them and it was a great struggled right to the end.

This was a great read, easy to follow and with a great pace. I look forward to reading the rest of the series and hopefully Ross' romance will be included in the future installments. This book was reviewed by a member of the review staff at Cocktails and Books. This is really good, and a tad steamy. What happens when you bring a New York style matchmaker to Gandigow, Scotland to reel in the real men for her clients in the US? Culture shock, and plans that seem to fall awry due to the machinations of her chauffeur, Ramsey. Kit really needs to make this work to support her sisters and mother, but Ramsey has plans of his own and they don't include allowing this little bit of woman get in the way... but, being thrown together for days as she searches across Scotland for men for ehr "stables," has both of them thinking a tad differently than planned... Read it, and you will see why this series is on my must read list.

Another good story for this series. Kit has come to Scotland and is gathering bachelors for her dating service. The women aren't too happy that the few single men are going to be taken from them. Ramsey isn't too happy to be the tour guide for Kit and takes liberties with her efforts to sabotage her. He sees the error of his ways and makes it up to her and finds himself attracted to her.
It is good to be back in Gandiegow. I love the quilting group and how they get themselves involved into everyone's business.

First book I've read by this author. I love how she brought Scotland to life for me. Kit who is juggling taking care of her sisters & mother, steps off the plane in Scotland and meets Ramsay Armstrong. Sparks are flying but she can't afford to get involved with him. She needs to get her matchmaking location set up. It needs to be profitable by August so she can get the bills paid. Now Ramsay wants her gone so he can realize his dreams. It seems nothing is working out how they planned and yet everything is as it should be. I can't wait to read all the other books in the Quilts & Kilts series.

Patience Griffin did a wonderful story with Kit and Ramsey. You will not
be disappointed with the Kilt and Quilts series. The romance in the books gets just a little steamy and then leaves you wanting more. You fall in love with the characters and small fishing village in Scotland, this makes you feel that you are one of the villagers that lives there.
Cannot wait until December for the next book. Thanks for a very good book.

I just read this book and Loved it. The relationship between Ramsey and kit as great loved the dialogue. The Armstrong brothers are interesting and fun. It was fun seeing Kit trying to set up her clients with wealthy Scottish men and Ramsey trying to stop it with his brothers assistance. I would recommend this book highly. Patience Griffin paints a fun picture of a Scottish town and makes you love everything Scottish and makes you want to visit Scottland,

I finished this Book 3 in her Gandiegow Kilts and Quilts series and I hope Ms. Griffin keeps this series going on a very long time! Her writing makes me laugh, cry and swoon and flicking the pages ever faster as I get deeper into the story. I don’t even mind losing sleep as I stay up into wee hours because I just can’t stop reading about the Gandiegow village folk. This wonderful love story about Ramsay and Kit is “to die for”!

A fun contemporary romance, between a matchmaker and a man who doesn't believe in love (at least for himself). I really enjoyed the humor throughout the book. There was plenty of passion between Kit and Ramsey, despite them starting out disliking each other. There were also some sweet side romances in the story. Nice details throughout the book.

Kit Woodhouse has a thriving matchmaking success. She decides to expand it to Scotland. Kit is determined to financially support her mother and two sisters after the death of her father. She has lined up women from the US to come over to meet the eligible bachelors in Scotland.

She runs into trouble when she meets the tour guide that has been lined up to chauffeur her around the countryside, meeting and recruiting the men for her business. She has her hands full with Ramsay Armstrong who is dead set against her being in Scotland. He resents his brother asking him to be her tour guide as he is trying to earn extra money on the side to buy his own fishing boat.

It was fun to reconnect again with the characters in the village of Gandiegow, especially the women of the quilting group. Deydie is the leader of the group and she is a bossy interfering woman. Kit has her work cut out for her. The antics that Ramsay gets Kit into are laughable. Kit pitches in to help his sister-in-law who turns out to be pregnant.

The village of Gandiegow seems to be great place to live (as long as you are accepted). Kit is not accepted for a while and you really feel for her.

I really liked this story.
