After a disastrous marriage and divorce, Detective Cary Stevens vowed he’d never let another woman into his heart. But when his latest investigation puts him in the way of a bullet, his bachelor days—and one-night stands—may be numbered. On the brink of death, he finds himself in Room Six, a waiting room in the hereafter where in-betweeners’ fates are truly decided. He resigns himself to dying of boredom, if nothing else, in the lineup of senior citizens with their AARP magazines, when in walks the one woman who could make him want a second chance at life... and love.
Chloe Sanders learns the hard way that no good deed goes unpunished when she pushes a little girl out of the way of a moving car and wakes up in some type of purgatory. Or maybe it’s heaven, because she couldn’t have asked for a hotter guy with whom to await her final judgment. The sweeping glances of his bedroom eyes and sharp-tongued flirtatiousness tell her Cary’s certainly no angel, but is he real? When she finally wakes up, Chloe’s determined to find out if he’s truly a man of magnificent flesh and blood or just a figment of her imagination. But before she can track him down, will the murderer that first put them both in Room Six come back to finish the job?

Anytime I want to read a book that is sure to make me laugh out loud, and multiple times, Ms. Craig is one of my go to reads. This book, #4 in the series, did not fail to comply to this premise. This read is about Detective Cary Stevens and Chloe Sanders. I LOVE that with this book, it was Cary that was never going to allow himself to love again. Usually it's woman trying to go against falling, but not here; and boy did he fall for Chloe!
I thoroughly enjoyed the near death aspect and suspense of this read. It really was a spin on her normal books, but really added to the plot. I also enjoyed the whole spiritual piece (to each their own on this one, but I do feel it added to the plot). And as in all of the Divorced series and with Ms. Craig, the connection between the two characters was smoking hot. I love the build up that lead the two finally being together...made it that much better! This was a fast paced read that never let me down!
I like Christie Craig and find her books pretty darn humorous and this one was no exception. I liked the characters and the plot was interesting. I could have done without the "Angel" parts of the book and instead just had the "after-life" scenes but what really dropped this from a 4 to a 3 to me was the "misunderstanding" at the end and the way it was handled.
I received this book for free from Publisher in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.Detective Cary Stevens has vowed to never let another woman into his life after his disastrous marriage, until he get's shot and meets Chloe Sanders in Room Six, a waiting in the hereafter where they wait for their fates to be decided.
Chloe had just lost her fiance and isn't looking for anything series, but she also does not believe that Cary Stevens can possibly be real until the detectives own partner shows up on her doorsteps (who also happens to be the man that her friend is trying to set her up with)
Sparks fly, tension thickens as the two are unable to keep away from each other, both with broken hearts and might be just what each of them needs.
This was a fun read. I really liked the supernatural aspect of the book, I thought it was different, refreshing and honestly what truly hooked me. I loved the humor in the story, the author is really great with that, I couldn't help but laugh and I've been really needing that lately. The character worked together well and to top it all off, the author also threw in a bit of a suspense involving gangs and I loved the way she handled the troubled kid in this book.
I listened to this on audiobook and really enjoyed it. The narrator had a southern twang that really fit with the book and the characters and I liked the lazy drawl. Of course I did speed up and that made it even better, but I think she did a wonderful job and it just really worked for the book.
I read the original series a while ago and loved the kooky fun so when I saw this one I had to grab it up. The series continues with a twist, this time it is the men's turn to have the "won't ever do it again" club and watching them fall is hilarious! Hot cop that has a big case of commitment phobia and a beautiful girl in trouble, watch the sparks fly and in your head you can just hear the song "another one bites the dust" play! Lite, fun read!
Christie Craig has been one of my go-to authors when I’m looking for a lighthearted read with plenty of humor and intrigue. Divorced, Desperate, and Dead is 4 in the Divorced and Desperate series. It’s a quick, lighthearted read that is filled with humor and intrigue.
Cary Stevens is part of the No Ball & Chain Gang, three detectives who have vowed never, ever, ever to get involved in a relationship again. After each suffered through their own disastrous marriage and hellish divorce they’ve got each others’ back. There is no way they are letting the other one succumb to a woman again. Well, that only lasted so long. Turner Calder was the first to bite the dust on that vow. Cary looks like he’s about to become the second one.
Cary and Chloe meet in Room Six, the waiting room in the afterlife. Yep. You heard me. The Afterlife. As in…Dead. Gone. Expired. No longer among the living. Strange place to meet? Yep. And some of their story gets even stranger after that. While their relationship had an unusual beginning, and a special angel? I’m not even sure what to call her, there are a lot of stumbles and laughs along the way to their HEA.
The entire Divorced and Desperate series is why Christie Craig is one of my go-to authors. If you want pure fun, entertainment and laughs check it out!
This book was so charming and endearing! I loved every moment of it!!!! It was an unusual and unique story filled with so much that it kept me riveted to the story. There was a lot of suspense.... I absolutely loved how Christie Craig weaves the suspense all throughout the story. She gives you just enough to keep you going but leaves you wondering how it is all going to turn out until near the end!!! I find that very clever!!!! All of the characters were so likeable..... Chloe and Cary were charismatic and kind, caring people, who had a deliciously magnetic attraction to each other based on a very surreal meeting!!! I loved JD's angel... The whole book was a delight to read and I highly recommend it. You won't forget the story very quickly because it is a magical love story!!!!
It feels wrong to rate a Christie Craig book this low. But….she forgot about Cary, in her bed, and she had been completely sober. And later she says it was the best sex of her life. So really? She forgot he was there?!? It wasn’t funny, the side characters were really annoying (not the cops from the previous books), the quick POV changes, and them always avoiding talking about ‘the elephant in the room’ for the first half of the book made it really hard to get into and care about the characters. I didn’t like Sheri or Dan so I’ll be ending this series here.
This was a cute story. The humor was so good! That hospital scene had me laughing so hard I snorted several times. I wasn't thrilled with how Chloe handled the conflict toward the end and it had a hit on my rating. I didn't like the pov switches to J.D. either. Those 2 points dropped my rating from a 4 to 3. I still liked this book and series. I look forward to reading the next.
Can a chance meeting in Room Six bring two people together forever? Cary has a case to solve but while working his case he meets Chloe in Room Six. Immediately they find a connection but will they find that HEA they both are searching for?
Loved every book so far in this series. They are funny and great love stories. They also have action and keep you reading. I listened to this book with a friend who is not much for reading and she thought it was good too.
I really liked the characters in this book who are tied to characters in the rest of this series. Fast moving, romance, mystery and action. I really enjoyed reading it.
Meh. The whole afterlife premise was not well executed. It wasn't really explained in the end. The romance was okay...not enough actual sex for a cheap romance. I hate when they just tell you about it after the fact...why do you think I'm reading this book?!
This was a cute story but not for me. This was much more explicit than I prefer so I will not be reading this author again. She is a good author, great writing ability but the sex scenes were not necessary to convey the plot of the story. To each his own.
Although I like this book series and I like Craig's writing style, but this book was probably my least favorite of the five. I was not expecting supernatural elements to the story, and it totally ruined it for me. Don't get me wrong, that's sometimes okay in books, but not when we are into the 5th book and have never encountered anything like it before. I liked the central characters, as well as their relationship development, while trying to find the bad guys. I felt like several topics just were dropped over the course of the book too, and their resolution wasn't too satisfying for me. I'm glad Craig is continuing to write in this series-it's a good mix of romance, suspense, and humor-but I'd like mine without the afterlife.
Story of two people who've been hurt by their ex's having to die to find each other.
I really enjoy Craig's writing and the characters, both old and new were fun to get to know. And the dog, Pooch, was adorable. It was a good story of learning to trust oneself and others again. It had the obligatory misunderstanding that thankfully didn't last too long. I would have liked a bit more wrap up at the end.
it's ok, but I'm not convinced. the plot wanders and gets bogged down. the love scenes never quite gelled. the gang plot didn't quite convince me. the afterlife business was just odd, with the stalker angel lady. the overly long black moment depended on a misunderstanding. oh, and she needs a better proofreader.
all the elements were here for a good Christie Craig book, but somehow they didn't quite make it.
I adore the Divorced and Desperate series this author writes. Each one can be read as a standalone, but they all contain characters from previous books. The characters are complex and intriguing, the locations all start out in southeast Texas. Her characters have to work for their HEA, and the plots will keep you going along for the ride. These books all have earned their 5 stars.
I love Christie Craig. Her characters always make me smile and are always likeable. I haven't read one of her books that I've found a hero/heroine that I've disliked. I wasn't sure about how this started out but I quickly became sucked in. It's not great literature but if you're looking for a fun book you can't do better than Christie.
I love all of these Divorced, Desperate books. They are light reading, which I sometimes need, humorous, which I loike, and have a good story. Sometimes you just don't need to have all the angst and after a "heavy" read, these fit the bill. I particularly liked this one. Loved how they met in room 6.
Christie Craig is the master at making me laugh out loud. Everything she writes makes me desperate for more. All of her characters are likeable (even when they're being morons), and her books always have super steamy sex scenes. Fun, quick read. Highly recommended!
I love Christie Craig.! She is one of the few authors whose books I'll get with out having read the jacket first. this was different though. I didn't expect the 'otherworld' part, but found myself enjoying it.this book was funny, smart and a definite feel-good book.
This is the first book by this author that I have read so when the book started out I thought oh no.Well from that point after Christie blew me away with a really good plot. This is an inside the park homerun for her!
Very interesting how the author made it into some type of near death experience for both main characters. It shows that true love does exist even if the first one doesn't work out
Fifth in the series, just as good as the first four. Sweet sexy and humorous contemporary romance set in a small western town. The series focuses on single officers and the woman they fall for.
