Placed in the FBI’s witness protection program, Daniel is relocated to Northern California where he’s given residence with a long, lost Aunt who runs a bio-tech firm called NanoBytes. Nanovision is an intriguing, engaging YA novel mixing science fiction and fantasy. The book starts out with sixteen-year-old Daniel Raye coming home from school at the final day of the year, ready for the summer holidays. Unfortunately nothing goes as planned. Some hit men are after his dad, and when they notice Daniel, they start beating him up too, and leave him for dead.

Daniel wakes up in the hospital, blind, and with no memory of what happened. He’s put in the witness protection program by the FBI and moves to California to live with an aunt he’s never met, Ethyl. She runs a bio-tech firm called NanoBytes, and does everything she can to cure Daniel’s blindness. She feels sorry for the boy and grows very fond of him. One of her experiments works, using DNA from animals and insects. The experiment works a little too well even, because Daniel gets x-ray vision. And when the mob is on his heels again, his new ability may save his life.

The book starts with a bang, and it keeps a fast pace until the end. The story is imaginative, the characters are engaging. I particularly liked Daniel, and Ethyl, and their relationship. The book managed to surprise me a few times with twists I didn’t see coming.

The only thing I’d have to mention is the editing. I didn’t notice any glaring errors, but we do get the usual pitfalls: showing instead of telling, not using ‘said’ but rather a plethora of other words, like ‘apologized’, ‘acknowledged’, ‘observed’, and so on. It was a little distracting, but still, I enjoyed the story, and the author obviously has a talent for storytelling.

Posted first to Blog Critics as Book Review: 'Nanovision,' A Technological Thriller by Paul T. Harry.

In Nanovision by Paul T. Harry, we are introduced to the subject of nanotechnology or nanomedicine, the medical application of that technology.

A devastating murder and betrayal leaves one person dead and a young teen without both his father and vision due to the fire used to cover up that murder. Daniel wakes up in the hospital with no vision and no memories. He doesn’t remember his life before his pain and has nowhere to go.

Yet upon further search, an aunt that has cut off ties long in the past is located. She is involved in the field of Nanomedicine and works in research. Not sure she is capable of taking on such a tragic young man, she nevertheless does her best. Ethyl Santini is raising her granddaughter and leads a very busy life of research in a nanolab where she is at work on regeneration. The testing of animals has proved to be extremely workable, and she has been able to save many that would not have lived otherwise.

In her heart she knows that she must help Daniel, and while she had not been aware she had a nephew, she is up to the challenge. Armed with her granddaughter’s approval she brings him into her family. Aware that while to the outside world he has been declared dead, there are concerns that he may still not be safe.

The fit is perfect and Ethyl is thrilled to find Daniel so likable and as he bonds with her younger charge life seems to be just right. Yet now her lab is in trouble and she is uneasy about her own research. Knowing she could be ousted at any time, she does the unimaginable. She puts together a new formula for her own nephew. With his agreement, they begin a series of doses to see if nanotechnology can help his eyesight. None of them are prepared for the changes.

As Daniel’s regeneration begins, his memory resurfaces, as well as anger at the death of his father and the assault on himself. Heading back to his home he is after the very man who changed his life. Judy, The FBI special investigator that followed the crime and found his aunt is notified and she begins the hunt to find him, for she knows more about this crime then he understands. Can she locate him before he finds those responsible? She is very aware that if he comes upon them first, he will not survive for they have been in the business of death for a long time. With his sudden disappearance, can she find him before it is too late?

Harry has given us characters that are interesting and likable. His use of technology is an interesting foil and creates a plausible storyline. The action and undertakings seem very real and are much like some of the crimes we see reported in the news, yet he takes us on a rocky journey of home and nanomedicine.

His interpretation of the reactions as Daniel’s blindness recedes is amazing and the action and interplay is sharp. You find the possibilities for exciting and strange. He has given us an intriguing thriller full of danger and excitement, and threaded it with the possibility of medical miracles.

If you enjoy action, mystery and suspense with just a touch of the unbelievable you will find this a great book for your library. Once you begin, plan on a full day of reading, this work is difficult to put down.

It's been a while since I've read a straight sci-fi novel. Lately, it's been sci-fi mixed with fantasy, or more of a space opera. So I was pretty excited to be able to read Nanovision - how cool does x-ray vision sound?! What I got though, was so much more.

Most of this book doesn't really focus on the extraordinary vision that Daniel ends up with. Which, to me, was a little bit of a disappointment, but at least it kept things moving along and exciting. Well, mostly. Especially if you don't read the synopsis very closely. Because the synopsis gives away at least 60% of the plot and I really hate when that happens. Like I wish it had stopped with the x-ray vision and just mentioned a little bit of the mob stuff, or maybe mentioned the mob stuff and just briefly touched on nanovision. I don't know, I just think I would have enjoyed it more if I hadn't known EXACTLY what was going to happen.

But, aside from that, it was still one heck of a ride. I don't read many mob books, but Mickey was absolutely terrifying. I would NOT want to be the one on the run from him, and I'd be so scared if I realized he was coming after me again. That being said, I did think it was way too easy for Mickey to find Daniel after the fact. I'm pretty sure the Witness Protection Program works better than that, but who knows what can happen when the mob gets involved. Everything just seemed too... convenient? I think that's a good word for it.

The science was really interesting, and I loved that Nano-Bytes is such an animal-friendly place. I'm glad they only test on injured animals to make them better, and don't hurt them in order to have something to fix. I probably would have given up on the book immediately if that was the case though, so I'm glad I didn't have to throw it across the room and curse at it. I did give it quite the side-eye before Ethyl explains though!

My favorite scenes were probably the ones in the casino, as I could definitely tell that a lot of care and knowledge went into them. They're so detailed and were exactly what I imagined a casino to be like! I loved how Daniel used his new-found abilities in the casino, and still played the fool. It was hilarious!

Overall, this was a pretty decent book. I think a lot of my frustration with it came from the synopsis being too long and not quite enough of the science, but I think that boils down to personal preference and that many people would still enjoy this book. If you like your sci-fi mixed with the mob, suspense, and a little gambling definitely get your hands on Nanovision ASAP! I'd give it a 3/5.

This book was better than expected. I think the blurb gave away too much though. I vaguely knew the entire storyline, except maybe the details about the end. That said, I think the book itself was fast paced, and I finished it in a couple of hours, which I don’t tend to do if I know what’s going to happen next.

The book was not without faults. For example, the inclusion of a hot girl who accompanies him and is totally in love with him, etc., was unnecessary and so cliché it was sad.

I don't have a problem with Paige, as a person, but at the moment, I don’t like the fact that every hero seems to have to have a girl. So my problem wasn’t with Paige, she seemed pretty cool, it was the fact that Daniel had a girl in the first place. I would have been nice to have a girl-less protagonist for once.

But the main thing I liked about the book was the fact that Daniel reacted to things the way I think I would have, even if I didn’t like him sometimes. I mean, I don’t even like myself sometimes. But other than Daniel, I liked practically every single character in the book. Even Mickey.

And the revenge concept was so similar to what I think I would think up, it’s creepy (You’ll get what I mean when you read it).

Adult languange and violence mark this book as one for the grown-ups.

The concept is top notch, the plot is good, some of the scenes could do with a bit of work, but all in all still a cracking read. The book, in itself, is in serious need of a decent editor as there are some glaring errors which nearly destroy the flow of the story, and there are areas which need some developmental help. Things like how his father's name is spelled, or the almost comical way the protagonist picks up a girlfriend.... Without giving away too much, the final scenes would have been far better if it was the FBI rather than the protagonist who came up with the idea of the sting.

Regardless of that, Paul's writing talents are solid. This book is a fantastic present-day sci fi which should be on your shelf if you're a fan of this sort of gritty, sometimes rather gruesome, genre.

Nanovision by Paul T Harry is a visionary book indeed. If new tech could heal irreparable diseases, then that would create the most perfect cure world ever dream't of. However, there are pitfalls. In this extremely well written book, the author explores medical break through and future possibility using DNA from animals and insects. A courageous feat for sure. Whether or not it works, is left to time and Daniel, who hold the key to that experiment conducted by his aunt the "mad scientist" as she is referred to.

Interesting tale about the dangers of new technology. I like fiction where the outcome is possible when talking about technology.

I love the possibility of technology being used to heal, but the science fiction was great. I wasn't as pleased that he fell for the "trampy" girl and in my mind he gets over her and finds a girl like his cousin. You'll understand when you read the story.

I give this book 4 out of 5 clouds.
