Greg Bear was an American writer and illustrator best known for science fiction. His work covered themes of galactic conflict (Forge of God books), parallel universes (The Way series), consciousness and cultural practices (Queen of Angels), and accelerated evolution (Blood Music, Darwin’s Radio, and Darwin’s Children). His last work was the 2021 novel The Unfinished Land. Greg Bear wrote over 50 books in total.

I don't "get" this novel at all. What was Bear shooting for? The story revolves around a WWII-era Japanese pilot who was kidnapped by aliens and forced to live on an alien planet for 400 years while they observed him. I won't spoil it, although the ending is a letdown. A lot happens to him during his journeys with Anna Nestor, a rich celebrity business conglomerate owner, and none of it has any impact on the ending. I don't even understand how they ended up back on the planet. It seems that Bear just started skipping ahead, which was confusing and disjointed. He's writing in present-tense one page, and then past-tense the next page, without a creative reason as far as I can tell. A lot was explained in the last fourth, but most was not, and that irritated me. If this were a movie, I'd say it suffered from an angry editor who went nuts with the scissors. There are some enjoyable scenes and ideas here as well, and it's not a terrible sci-fi story, it just doesn't satisfy. (Kind of a Bear trademark, I suppose).

سه سال بعد از آن روز، سه سفینه جستجوی زمینی، به سیاره‌ای که پرفیدیسی‌ها به ناگهان آن‌را رها کرده‌اند وارد می‌شوند و می‌بینند که همه جای سیاره را پیش از رفتن نابود کرده‌اند تا چیزی بر جای نگذارند جز گنبدی بزرگ در گوشه‌ای از سیاره. و در آن گنبد محصور عظیم، آنها یوشیو کاواشیتا را پیدا می‌کنند، در روستایی ژاپنی با معماری سده‌های پیش که در میان تپه‌های جنگلی قرار گرفته.

این کتاب کوتاه، داستان تلاش مداوم یوشیو برای یافتن معنی در دنیایی است که همه در آن گذشته خود را فراموش کرده‌اند و چشمانشان قادر به دیدن نادیدنی‌ها نیست. یوشیویی که ده‌ها بار زندگی در گذشته را تجربه کرده و بار چهارصد سال تنهایی را به دوش می‌کشد. یوشیویی که تلاش می‌کند کامی‌ها (خدایان) را بار دیگر بیابد.

خلاصه زیر برای خودم نوشته شده و تمام داستان کتاب را لو می‌دهد

وانترها در ایستگاه سفینه‌ای خود در حال شنود داده‌های سیاره‌ای هستند که متعلق به پرفیدیسی‌هاست. تا اینکه بطور ناگهانی داده ‌ها قطع می‌ شوند و این یعنی اینکه احتمالا آنها این سیاره را ترک کرده‌اند و این، ونترها را وادار میکند تا سفینه دست دومشان را که متعلق به آیغورها بوده به سمت سیاره حرکت دهند به طمع اینکه با وارد شدن به ان به عنوان اولین گروه، صاحب آن شوند.

با ورد به فضای سیاره درمی یابند که همه ان را گویی شخم زده‌اند و چیزی بر جای نمانده جز یک گنبد بزرگ. با ورود به گنبد، مردی ژاپنی را در لباس سامورایی می‌یابند. دو سفینه دیگر، یکی متعلق به یونایتد استارز و دیگری متعلق به نستور سر میرسند. تاکاشیتا دعوت نستور را پذیرفته و به سفینه او میرود و در آنجا داستان زندگی و ربوده شدنش توسط پرفیدیسی ها را بیان میکند و کنجکاویش را با پرسیدن درباره تکنولوژیهای جدید برطرف میکند. رابطه‌ای بین الوکس و نستور هم شکل می‌گیرد که با جدا شدنشان تخم کینه‌ای در دل الوکس باقی می‌ماند. با آمدن سفینه‌های سنتروم، نود درصد مالکیت سیاره به تاکاشیتا و مابقی به وانترها میرسد. تاکاشیتا با نستور به زمین میرود تا ژاپن جدید را ببیند که از دیدنش ناامید می‌شود. در انجا ناو هواپیمابر هیریو را هم می‌بیند که از دریا به در اورده و در موزه قرار داده‌اند. پیشنهاد ازدواج به نستور میدهد و او قبول میکند و بلافاصله به سمت بخشی از فضا راه می‌افتند که آیغورها اخیرا اعلام کرده‌اند متعلق به انها نیست. در آنجا از اولین سفینه‌های ورودی هستند، ولی چیزی پیدا نمی‌کنند. با پدر نستور هم دیدار می‌کنند که مردی خشک است و شرکتی مجزا را اداره می‌کند و تنها به فکر منافع خود است.

سپس به فکر گشتن در بین هفتادهزار دنیای جدید می‌کنند. بعد از چند گردش، تاکاشیتا احساس خوبی ندارد و می‌خواهد دوباره به گنبدش برگردد. نستور قبول می‌کمد با او به گنبد برگردد و پنج ماه با او در انجا زندگی می‌کند. حشرات را به گنبد می‌آورند و سیستم حیاتی گنبد را فعال می‌کنند. در تمام این مدت یوشیو درباره بیگانگان مطالعه می‌کند تا رابطه بین انها و کامی‌ها را دریابد. یکی از اخرین روزهای اقامتشان در سیاره، وانترها برمیگردند و می‌گویند می‌خواهند سهمشان از سیاره را بفروشند و باید با انها مذاکره کنند. پس از پایان صحبت‌هایشان، درخواست می‌کنند به علت خرابی لندرشان شب را در گنبد بمانند. نستور قبول می‌کند. فردا یوشیو دوباره بی‌قرار شده و متوجه شده در تمام این پنج ماه هربار از گنبد بیرون رفته و با کارت (ماشین کوچک گردشی) گشته‌اند تنها از مسیرهای خاصی بوده، بیرون می‌رود تا به مسیری وارد شود که تا کنون نرفته‌اند، علی‌رغم مخالفت نستور، آلائه هم با او می‌رود و اومولا پیش نستور می‌ماند. بعد از رفتن یوشیو، اومولا می‌گوید که باید به همراه او به لندر بیاید و اسلحه‌اش را نشان می‌دهد و می‌گوید می‌بایست سهم آنها را از تکنولوژی‌های مخفی‌ای که در سیاره پیدا کرده‌اند بدهند. نستور با قیچی باغبانی لیزری اومولا را زخمی می‌کند. ان بیرون یوشیو موفق می‌شود به بخش‌های نادیدنی و ممنوعه برود و دیواری نامرئی را پیدا میکند. ساختمان‌هایی به ناگهان تجسم می‌یابند و اطرافشان را پر می‌کنند. آلائه در ان حین سردرگمی یوشیو را با چاقو میزند. نمایندگان باقی مانده پرفیدیسی‌ها پیش از مرگش با او حرف می‌زنند و می‌گویند ازمایشش تمام شده‌است. پلوروس وقتی برمی‌گردد نستور و یوشیو را پیش هم پیدا می‌کند. یوشیو و اومولا مرده‌اند و از الائه خبری نیست.

When the husband and wife listening team of Oomalo and Alae Waunter land on the abandoned Perfidisian planet to lay claim to it, they find that there is a single human resident in a dome - a Japanese airman who vanished during World War 2 and has not aged since. The powerful Anna Nestor helps the man, Yoshio Kawashita, make his own claim, basically cutting out the Waunders except for a 10% finders fee. Disillusioned they leave, while Nestor and Yoshio travel back to Earth where Yoshio searches for a raison d’etre after so many years of being studied in captivity. Greg Bear has given us an enthralling premise but seems to have had disparate ideas on what to do with it. Yoshio’s search for meaning and cultural heritage vie with his growing love for Anna and a feeling that something has been left unfinished on the Perfidisian planet. A jilted ex of Anna’s deliberately leads the Waunders astray by telling them that Nestor has discovered something valuable there and wants to cut them out again, which leads to a not-entirely satisfactory confrontation at the end.

There were times where I read a chapter and thought to myself, “I have no idea what that was about.” There are some interesting parts, some decent imagery and tech, but it felt disconnected with no flow to the story at times.

DNFed around page 180/250ish pages - what a strong idea for a novel, and what a let down in reading it

Alae and Oomalo are Listeners, recording the mysterious broadcasts from a secretive society, but when the broadcasts stop, they decide to claim the apparently deserted planet for themelves. Instead, they find Yoshio Kawashita, a WWII Japanese pilot. Plucked from his sinking ship, he was transported to the planet and made to reinact Japan's checkered history. But no one, least of all him, knows why and who his mysterious saviours are. Back amongst humans, he struggles to answer these questions and fit in to a society so different to the one he left behind.

A strange little book - I loved the premise and the style, but found it a bit confusing at times. The ending was good, but I had too many questions left - and not in a good way. Still, it kept me entertained and I love any sort of SF.

I'm pretty sure I liked some of Greg Bear's other work, although I did read it 20 years ago in high school. This is not one of those works. It's one of his earlier novels, and just wasn't that interesting.

There's a lot of disjointed hopping around from one set of characters to the next, without developing them enough to make me care about them. And this story suffers from a problem that is very common among the early works of so many sci-fi authors that later wrote some cool stuff: the abrupt, lame, ending. Seriously man, don't start writing the book if you don't have a good ending for it.

And don't start reading this one, because you'll just be disappointed! Try some of his later stuff.

A group discovers A planet with just a dome on it. When they land on the planet and enter the done thet find A men who has been living in there for centuries. They take him to earth and introduce him to the modern world. It is an interesting book. But not worth reading a second time. A great look of the future from the point of view of someone whose never been there. I will wonder what it is like if He Never left and what it is like in the dome. What will happen if he never left? Will he die? Can he die? Would he run out of martials.
