Avalon Clementine, the first female of her kind, is painfully cursed to turn into her dragon form every night.
With the help of her boys, members of the secretive Vox, they will try to find a cure. All the while seeking to defeat the evil of her half-brother Aibek.
Can they succeed or will Greed, Jealously, and Love stand in their way?
I never really know how I should write these things. Do I go the professional, but boring route and talk about myself in the third person (which feels unnatural), or do I do first person, like a dating site? Sadly, second person doesn't work here, that would be cool.
Something like: You are looking at the profile of GoodReads author A.S. Oren. You know she is a cat person, and owns three of the little fuzzy things.
I digress. I live in Colorado, born and raised here all my life. Like you read above, I have three cats and want a big dog (perhaps an Alaskan Malamute).
I love writing, it's one of the few things I get joy out of and know I'm good at. I've been doing it off and on since I could draw and think I was writing words with backwards sevens and squiggle lines.
I currently work as a ghostwriter, graphic artist and editor.

What would happen if you were part of a secret ancient race of the Dragon and you were the only female dragon alive? That's what Avalon is. She is a dragon and lives with her adopted father on a orchard. All things turn on her fifteenth birthday and she finally accepts the invitation to Spearwood Academy. She has no idea what she is in for or that she is going to go to an all boy school until she goes. She has been shifting ever night since she was a baby and all she knows is that it hurts every night. She lives in a orchard in Washington with her father Ed until she moves to Spearwood Academy in the high the Shishapangama Mountains of Tibet. The mountain has a magical protective shield that stops humans from walking into or onto the Academy. Avalon is careful to trust any of the boys. She befriends five of the boys and is engaged to one of the Royals, Payne. She meets Lusk Mirren when she gets into a fight with him to save Derren Bullock. Horace King, Amr Radcliff, Dante Mathis, and Triton Lennox were her first and true friends. They all look after Avalon in this new and dangerous world. Avalon will be tested and how will she handle her first Survival challenge. Who will her enemies be and who are her allies?
I like this book because it shows how challenging it can be to earn trust and go into a new environment where you are not like anyone. It also shows how strong you can be when enduring pain everyday. Avalon lives in a world of pain and her world revolves around the night. Avalon is still at home with her father “ By the grace of something greater than myself, I survived infancy. The pain has never become bearable, but my body is able to handle the stress better. I no longer sleep the entire day, just to transform again at night.” She is all alone and has never known what it is like to have a pain free life. She is always fighting a battle with the night that will never end. I think this is amazing because no one I know has ever been in constant physical pain. To live like this is just a world of pain. I think is just a really good book and is one of the best fantasy book I have read in awhile.
All i can say is WOW! This is the first volume of the book series Spearwood Academy and I must say it is amazing! I can't get enough of the boys, they are too charming for their own good. Each one of them is screaming HOTNESS OVERLOAD!
The story revolves around a female dragon, Avalon Clementine who is a first of her kind. It was said on the very first chapter that her kind is cursed by the Queen of gypsies, Queen Sibi, to painfully turn every night. And because of the curse that was handed to them, the female dragons later on became extinct . Avalon is the only survivor of the curse (still surviving) and now she's offered to attend spearwood academy which is practically meant for special kids like her and guess what?? It's an all boys school! Which means DREAM LAND!!
Avalon is strong, confident, witty and has a very down to earth character which makes her very likeable. The boys are the epitome of hotness for me and I just can't get enough of them. Each character of this book are just too perfect and way too awesome. Which makes me wish they should just get out of the book and make me swoon! Like Now!!
I like fantasy books but this book got me totally hooked up. I'm like screaming PLEASE BE REAL! I'm so thankful for the author for making such perfect and loveable characters. If you hadn't chose to become an author Spearwood Boys wouldn't have happened!
So for everyone there who loves everything hot (Boys in particular). Then this book is definitely for you! Definitely a book worth your time!

Imagine watching a movie,it's full of magic, dragons, chase and adventures.Imagine holding your breath while this fantastic world unravel, every little detail gives it life,it's fresh and nothing like you have ever seen before.... Now....it is not about this book.Imagine the previously described movie noted down by a 10 year old while watching it.These notes about the that movie is this book. You get zero world building, zero character description besides them all being pretty, you get the flow of child's scribbles for a story and as for romance-whatever pre-puberty girl could dream up while having very poor, uneducated imagination.
It does not read easily,it is a struggle to get through the page, unless you are between age 6-8,then maybe....
This is the first piece of work that I have read by this author. I got this while it was free after seeing numerous bloggers rave about it and all of the amazing reviews on Amazon and Goodreads. Unfortunately, I just didn't feel the same way about it.
The concept was brilliant; I haven't come across many books where the characters turn into dragons. I couldn't wait to get started! I also thought that the detail that Oren went into about Avalon's change was brilliant. I just wish that the same detail was applied to the rest of the book.
For a collection of 'episodes', it is quite short and therefore missing depth, and there were a few typing and formatting errors (which I'd usually be fine with, but this collection is so short that it bothered me). Also, there wasn't nearly enough background information or detail to make the world that Oren had created feel believable, and the characters often blended together. There are constant references to other works, such as Harry Potter and Doctor Who, which made me feel that the author was using these references instead of having to give details.
I found the writing to be a little simplistic at times and didn't feel that it suited the characters or the world that Oren had created; in a world where everyone is incredibly gifted, the simplistic way that they spoke or acted really didn't work for me. As well as this, all of the male characters seemed to accept Avalon instantly; while I would expect a fair bit of interest, as she's the only female with the same abilities as them and the only female in the school, I would also expect a degree of caution or for them to want to test her or shun her once the interest had died down. I was also left very confused about the encounter with the 'Royal' as there was no explanation at all.
For a lot of the volume, not much happens and i often found myself drifting. Also, the phone calls between Avalon and Edgar, her adoptive father, felt very much like an afterthought and very abrupt. By the end of the volume, the reader is still left knowing no more really than when the story started. While I understand that cliffhangers make the reader purchase the next instalment, there was no attempt at giving answers, which made me feel disappointed rather than excited to read the next instalment.
At only 168pages, it was a nice short read, full of action and really interesting. I don't read the synopsis of a book right before I read it if I bought it a while ago. So I was shocked when I found out the main character was female, I am guessing this was the authors intention. It was well done. The story itself is really well done and I am looking forward to seeing what happens. The writing is beautiful and definitely a book I will recommend.
The synopsis is a little misleading though, that's a synopsis for the whole series not just this book. So I never met some of characters that were mentioned and don't know what the secret group is yet.
I have already started the second set of books and looking forward to seeing what happens.
My first dragon-shifter book. Honestly loved it. It is fast paced, but seems a bit slow in the beginning as we are getting to know her and her home life. For instance it takes a few pages to figure out Avalon is a girl. It may seem obvious by the name, but I also think the name could be used for either a boy or a girl. Then everything picks up once she gets on a plane that can travel through time zones in minutes. Once at school, we are hit with more and more questions that drive you nuts, as there are no answers yet.
WARNING WITH THIS BOOK! Seriously! Okay I'm shockingly pretty impressed. It did have mild language. Content was different and unusual. It did have moments where in the changes she was not covered. That being said it was well developed characters were strong. I am nervous it's tricking me into reading more and its working because I just got the second book on my unlimited. I will let you know. BEWARE! The second about third chapter starts in the with bomb word. So if you don't want to read a book with that word. Don't start this one.
This was a really quick read for me and I enjoyed the story but not the cliffhanger ending. I will probably be picking up the next book in the series to see how this story ends and if the heroine of the book can win against all the forces against her.
Okay, so I enjoyed this book but there were quite a few typos in it. But I enjoyed the story and how it went. I liked the fact that there were dragons and such. I'm seemingly, almost always, with the books I read, a fan of fantasy, and I consider this book as a fantasy book.
This book is a really fun start to this series. Avalon is a great, realist teenager who's easy to cheer for as she's thrown into this whole new world of Dragon families. Definitely worth a read if you like YA Fantasy. It's a quick read too, and easy to get sucked in.
Interesting concept with the girl being a dragon and no parents! I find the boys at the school funny the way they seem to fall over one another to talk to Avvi.
I read these before I learned that there was a revamp. These were alright, but nothing to really get too excited about, but I definitely think I'm going to read the revamp. I really like A. S. Oren's writing style. Mostly, what bothered me about these books was the pacing, information-wise. We spent a good stretch of time fumbling around in the dark, absolutely clueless, and then all of a sudden we'd get these massive info-dumps in the form of flashbacks, rather than woven into the current story somehow. It wasn't very well executed, and that's why I'd give it a 3-star rating, rather than a 4-star.
*I received a free copy of the book in exchange for an honest review* This does not in any way, shape, or form make my review biased. If I had bought the story, I would review the exact same thing. Overall rating: 4.2 Wow. I had received a copy of this book a mere two hours ago. From the very first chapter, I was immediately engrossed in this book. Honestly, when I entered the Spearwood Academy realm, I was NOT expecting this. I was expecting some timid girl, who just happened to be gorgeous as she enters an oh-so-perfect world after her hard past. This was not the case. At all. Normally, if I find a book unbearable, I stop immediately, choosing not to expose myself to the horribleness of it. With the exception of a few scenes, this story always kept me on my toes. But, you must always have a calm before storm, right? This is one of those series where, you can`t help but wonder if Spearwood academy actually exists or not. (ex: Percy Jackson, Harry Potter) I would definitely recommend this to a friend. Now, I know what you`re thinking, "If it`s so great, then why is it only four stars?" Well, I have composed the following reasons on where it could get that final .8 of a star. -Humor I was honestly expecting more humor. Reading the authors profile, I had myself set for laughing my a** off. (I censored the word, in case profanity isn`t allowed on Goodreads reviews) The most I did was blow air through my nose at a few references (you all know what I`m talking about.) It could be the fact it`s 1:00 in the morning, or that I`ve just been really grumpy today- but I didn`t find much of this story humorous. -School Correct me if I`m wrong, but last time I checked, being raised be Irish immigrants isn`t exactly the path of education. Therefore, if she could solve a problem faster and more correctly than Edgar (her teacher) I`d say her skills should`ve been a bit rusty. In fact, I didn`t hear at all about how school was going for her, was it hard? Did she have to rush in the morning to finish it? Even if she were a genius or a prodigy, it would still be hard to catch up on years of missed school. -Character Development I love each and every one of the characters, but seriously? There`s only one or two sentences (paragraphs, if lucky) about that SPECIFIC character. I would`ve liked it better if she had more one-on-one time with the boys.If this was intentional, to keep the story `mysterious` then ignore this bullet. -References I know, I know. This bullet is probably on almost everybody`s review for this book. But seriously, I had to google most references. Don`t get me wrong, I LOVE Harry Potter (I`m actually under a marauder`s map blanket right now), Supernatural, Doctor Who, and the whole Shebang. The problem is, not everyone who reads this story will. -The Heroine Normally, I hate the heroine, and only stay engrossed in the book for the hot guys. Aside from her mini-breakdown at the beginning and end of the story, I was never frustrated with her...and believe me, I have quite the temper when it comes to the heroine. She had a strong will, a sense of justice, and she didn`t melt when talked to by a remotely attractive guy. Although, I NEED TO KNOW WHAT SHE LOOKS LIKE! She says she`s not exactly a centerfold, but let`s be honest, what gorgeous, supermodel heroine thinks so? The only thing I learned about her appearance is that she was slightly chubby (now she`s slim) and that she has curly, blonde hair. More of a description would be nice. Apart from all of my bitching constructive criticism, I overall enjoyed this story very much. Now, if you`ll excuse me, I`m going to be blowing up the author`s inbox with messages asking for the next volume in exchange for a rant review. Eh, maybe that`ll have to wait...I don`t think she would appreciate the fact I`m filling her email at 3 in the morning...heh...heh.
People might hate me for this, but you know, honest opinion and all that.
The first volume was tolerable, the main character was relatable and I liked some of the other characters, as well as the plot developments. The second novel I read out of slight curiosity -thinking that there would be some kind of character development or something. I had to stop reading at around 79% of the 3rd volume because I thought it was that bad.
I've read a fair amount of these books that could potentially (maybe this one is, I don't know) be a shojo manga "based on an otome game with the same name", y'know?
There were predictable characters, -the flirtatious one who thought he was sex on legs who I always imagined with a rose magically in his hand whenever the moment for his borderline sexual harassment arose (Dante - if you're wondering (though he was my favorite because he was funny)), -the kind one who ended up probably friend-zoned (Horace, was it?), -the creepy one who talks in another language, can't quite get the accent right, but still thinks he's god's gift to Earth (Paden or something - who, by the way, made me laugh hysterically as I knew SOMEONE at some point would waltz in and propose like it's, y'know, normal) -The one who appears to be scary but is in actual fact just an arse who gives the female protagonist the most disgusting regurgitated nickname ever that's probably in every Wattpad good-girl/bad-boy novel, like, ever -And can we not forget, the Avalon who was brainwashed into believing she was a rich kid. Because everyone knows that all rich kids are afraid of dirt, care about their appearance 24/7 (including life-threatening situations) and behave like spoilt brats. Apparently.
However, I did not list all the characters because some were either relatable, or likable characters. The main character was one of the readers, obsessed with her fandoms, had multiple OTPs and had written fanfiction, just like some people who've read Harry Potter or *cringe* Twilight too many times to count on both hands.
As well as this, I thought despite some of the predictable situations, like the only girl in a boy's fancy school (I mean - even the bloody headmaster called his school prestigious - that doesn't happen in real life because of formalities and a thing called 'modesty') The plot was okay.
I mean, deaths and things were hinted at with a big neon sign, and plot twists where way too sudden (such as the whole parent trap immediate realization "omg siblings" which I thought wasn't so straightforward and wasn't enough proof.) and also the competition that the 'Handsome 4' were oh-so worried about but apart from Avalon having to strip in front of 3 hormonal teenagers (one of which with questionable intentions) which was borderline sexual harassment, again.
Personally, reading it seriously as a novel that I'd hopefully take something from, really didn't do anything for me.
But, if you enjoy reading books that: -take goddamn ages to pick a love interest because the main character doesn't have actual deep, emotional ties with any of the guys because they're all too busy with random PDA, -Have predictable plotlines -Annoying, unbelievable, totally unrealistic characters -Sudden plot twists that are unexplained and confusing
I loved the concept of a school for Dragaon, and Avalon being the only female dragon born in thousands of years. She shifts into a dragon every night which is a very painful experience for her, and she is under the impression that she is the only one of her kind. Avalon has lived with Edgar - whom she classes as her father, though really he "found" her in the Orchard and has been taking care of her for the last 15 years., and no one apart from Edgar knows what she really is.
When she turns 15 years old she learns that she is heading off to an elite school for people just like her, Spearwood Academy - an all boys school for Dragons. Excited at the prospect of meeting other people like her but also scared that she is the only female - despite there being a curse on the dragon kind that no female will live once born.
The whole plot premise was good, it has me intrigued as to what the curse was all about and what the people at Spearwood really had in store for Avalon.
Warning, this comes with a cliffhanger, as with all the volumes I have read (1-8) but they keep me hooked enough to read the next.
What I hated -- way to many Harry Potter references, god job I have read them as if you haven't you are screwed as the author doesn't elaborate on the references at all. And also this is terribly edited - unless I received an unedited copy - but there are missing words in sentences, wrong words and the "" marks are all over the place that sometimes you don't know when it actual character dialogue or thought....
Since this was a freebie, and I believe an unedited copy, I'll try to cut it some slack. I would actually give it 2.5 stars because I can see the potential if a good editor got their hands on it. However, my copy was difficult to read due to the choppy writing and that's what I have to go by. I felt the pop culture references were forced in to appeal to a younger audience. There was little to no real character development. I kept getting confused as the the ages of the characters so I never really connected with any of them. I was excited by the ending and frustrated by the cliff hanger. Will not likely read the rest of the series unless I win another giveaway.
This entire series has so much potential, but they all have a rough draft feel to them. All the characters need more depth and it all needs a couple of good edits.
