Ray Douglas Bradbury was an American author and screenwriter. One of the most celebrated 20th-century American writers, he worked in a variety of genres, including fantasy, science fiction, horror, mystery, and realistic fiction.

Bradbury is best known for his novel Fahrenheit 451 (1953) and his short-story collections The Martian Chronicles (1950), The Illustrated Man (1951), and The October Country (1955). Other notable works include the coming of age novel Dandelion Wine (1957), the dark fantasy Something Wicked This Way Comes (1962) and the fictionalized memoir Green Shadows, White Whale (1992). He also wrote and consulted on screenplays and television scripts, including Moby Dick and It Came from Outer Space. Many of his works were adapted into television and film productions as well as comic books. Bradbury also wrote poetry which has been published in several collections, such as They Have Not Seen the Stars (2001).

The New York Times called Bradbury "An author whose fanciful imagination, poetic prose, and mature understanding of human character have won him an international reputation" and "the writer most responsible for bringing modern science fiction into the literary mainstream".

«A vossa mãe e eu vamos tentar ensinar-vos. [...]

Reboot.

William Thomas, wife and children escape to the red planet in one of the only remaining rockets, before Earth is completely wiped out by nuclear bombs. As the last human survivors in a deserted Mars, they just have to pick any city they want to live in, and maybe have a picnic.

This was a nice, fitting ending to the martian chronicles. Maybe not the best, but a very good, decently satisfying one nonetheless. That ending image sure left one very big and powerful impression. One very huge question remains unanswered though.

???????? The Martian Chronicles. <--

Reinicio.

Forget what we were, burn our systems, our culture, our memories, until the world map that systematized our planet Earth.

Start all over again, from the root, now on another planet.

Once again as in other stories of Bradbury the fire is present. Perhaps it is the same fire of Heraclitus: the fire that consumes, transmutes and points out that nothing is forever, nothing is eternal, only the change in itself.

Humanity rises in itself, but in another format: Martian

-----

I pulled the five-page story up from its original source here: https://www.luminist.org/archives/SF/..., the Summer 1946 issue. It was pretty cool seeing the illustrations. I liked the story, but not profusely. The writing seemed primitive to me. Bradbury will certainly progress far from this point.

The first Martian Chronicle published, it stands alone here well enough. In fact, there's no indication Bradbury will ever use this setting again, although as we know he certainly does.

The plot begins with a family taking a picnic, but there's tension in the air incongruous with the idyllic setting. By the end of the story we learn the ulterior motive. That motive was a long time coming and not as shocking as the author probably expected once delivered.

I'm rather surprised this one little story is where began The Martian Chronicles, except it is always placed at the end of Bradbury's collection. He wrote backwards from here.

Timothy was no fool, even as young as he was. He knew this sudden vacation was more than a fishing trip. His mom and dad seem nervous. To keep his younger brothers calm, Timothy plays along, waiting for his dad to explain.

This short story turned out to be the first installment into what became THE MARTIAN CHRONICLES. What this story did was setup the reason why the Mars community ever started, why the original colonists fled Earth. THE MARTIAN CHRONICLES is one of my favorites and the first Bradbury book that I ever read. This has me itching to read it again. Sounds like a trip to the library is in my immediate future. 4 out of 5.

it's another solid entry from a book filled with solid stories.

but i like this one much less than i used to. mostly for its anti-progress & anti-technology rants. no. that is wrong. wrong wrong wrong. we live in a golden age. hard to see sometimes, i'm sure. but don't take my word for it. just look at how people lived. not 200 years ago. 40 years ago. 50 years ago. we're much better off, because of tech & capitalism.

so buzz off with all that 'the technology was bad for us' balderdash. no. it's good. it let's me read this silly story on a kindle, beamed to me by electrons for eg.

IF YOU HAVEN’T READ THE VELDT OR THE MILLION YEAR PICNIC PLEASE DON’T READ THIS!!

There are many similarities and differences in Bradbury’s writing. For example, the plots are all very similar. The characters are put in an illustration where they need a break. The Veldt, All summer in a day, and The million year picnic are all models of this proven fact. In the Veldt, the parents are tired of feeling unneeded.
