I normally don't read paranormal books, but once I stumbled onto Joey W. Hill's Vampire Queen series I couldn't get enough! This in the 12th in the series and it does not disappoint. Joey's vampires are strong, savage and unforgettable, leaving you begging for more. Thankfully she's a kind enough author to oftentimes cross her characters over from story to story. Fingers crossed, I'm already missing Kaela and Garron.

"Sometimes it was like the slow opening of the package, versus tearing off the wrapping, but sometimes it was a mix. If a few paper cuts were involved in the process, so much the better. It wasn't really worth it until blood had been shed."

"That's the last time you manhandle me. You'll be fed when you learn to ask nicely. And when I've had my pleasure. You're here to serve my needs. Not the other way around. You get only what I give you. I'm the only one in this room who will be taking."

"There is nothing more powerful and frightening than choice. It's the field on which courage and love are tested."

The Vampire Queen series continues to rock, and this latest instalment turns both the series and the vampire mythos on its collective ear.

There is a twist to the genre (a submissive vampire), with a twist to the twist, wherein said submissive vampire is most beautifully and completely Dominated by a mere mortal. And in a twist to the twisted twist...said mortal Dom is willing to "sub" by appearances to the vampire community wherever and whenever his sub/vamp needs his support.

And who said the vampire genre had nothing new left to give?

Now, add to that, the skill and imagination and sheer heart and soul of an author like Ms. Hill and you have another hit-over-the-green-monster of a tale in a series that just won't quit.

The ONLY thing wrong with this book, is that it isn't long enough to have time for these very compelling characters to interact with the more enlightened of Ms. Hill's vampire world. I have a feeling this will be rectified soon. I look forward to a Jacob/Gideon/Garron meet-and-greet. I look forward to Lady Lyssa's perspective, and it's a well known fact that I look forward to any damn thing Daegan-related.

Yep, there are some vampire series' that aren't going anywhere but up...

Joey W Hill has rocked the Vampire Queen Series again in her 12th book in this series. Kaela is beautiful, strong, and stands for everything that is vampire. Garron is powerful, overwhelming, and dominants this series with a firm hand. He takes over the normal role of Ms. Hill's vampires. A wonderful twist! One that will have you re-reading Elusive Hero over and over again. The hot, steamy BDSM will have you running for ice-cubes.

Where is this Eden? This is the place I would love to work. Reading this book makes me want to not only visit the island but live there. I realize this is shared world between many authors. Visiting Ms. Hill's vision is magical in more ways than one.

This book offers a an unlikely twist to the normal vampire BDSM theme in the VQ series. Here we have a made female vampire who is actually a submissive at heart. Now we have all been made to understand that vampires in general are dominant in nature, be it male and female. Here, Lady Kaela, a high-ranking vampire is a vampire anomaly - she craves to be a sub to a worthy Dom. She's been harboring this fantasy for years but it is a fantasy that can be dangerous and fatal to her if it is made known in the vampire world. So she's been hiding this until she decided to take a chance and make the fantasy real at a very secret pleasure island called Eden (something like the 1980s TV show Fantasy Island....but with the main attraction there being sex-related activities and fantasies). There she meets the scarred Garron Rand, one of the human Doms there who had agreed to take her on and fulfill her fantasy.

This book has very intense BDSM sessions described in detail compared to the few VQ books before this. The characters tie in with some of the more familiar names and vampires from the earlier VQ books - there was a mention of lady Lyssa, Jacob and the two vampire couple Richard and Tara.

I have to say that Garron is a rather scary and intimidating character and not just because of his size physical appearance. He comes across as a very intense Dom and his description is believable. He wants to be Kaela's Dom all the way but the choice would have to be made by Kaela as taking him with her as her Dom would mean that he would have to marked as her slave.

So how does an obvious human Dom be a third-marked slave to a high ranking female vampire who is a closet sub? The story is unique compared to other VQ themes and is a fresh take to the series. I enjoyed it immensely, some of the scenes made me cringe because i could imagine the discomfort and pain but their love story makes up for it because this is no ordinary pairing.

Excellent read. I hope there'll be more of the VQ series.

Elusive Hero will take you on an intimate sensual adventure. It asks if a born submissive can perform like a dominant outside of the bedroom. The answer is yes. Lady Kaela is a made vampire who was born a natural service submissive but to survive in her new life as a vampire she has had act like a dominant for her safety and those she has charge of. It’s worked for 175 years. But it has taken its toll. When the opportunity to explore her submissive fantasies arises can she indulge? More importantly will she be able to give it up when it is over?
Garron Rand has been through hell on earth and has the scars to prove it. He has healed while working on Eden Island and has become one of their best professional Dominants. When he hears of Kaela’s predicament he is intrigued and volunteers to help her rediscover her submissive side.
90 percent of this book is interaction between only Garron & Kaela. There is a lot of mind play as well as some kinky release. But it isn’t until they interact with others that the real question of the book comes into play. Can Master Garron be a Master in the bedroom but a servant out of it? Will Kaela be able to protect him? Should they even try?
Once again Joey W. Hill takes you places you never thought you would go and makes you enjoy the ride. Though this takes place in the world of the Vampire Queen series it can be read standalone. Although if you really want to know what Kaela and Garron are up against you should really read this series.

I'm a long time Joey Hill fan, but this is the first book I've read in her "Vampire Queen" series.

Kaela's a powerful vampire, but she's fundamentally a submissive, and the dissonance between who she is and who she has to appear to be is tearing her apart. She accepts an invitation to the mysterious Eden resort island that promises to fulfill her deepest wishes, where she meets Garron, one of the staff Masters, who will be her guide on her journey to true, but temporary, submission. It can't be permanent -- other vampires would kill her quickly if they sensed any weakness. However, as Garron reveals the beauty of allowing him to be her Master, Kaela dreams of the impossible -- bringing Garron back with her to be her servant, but also her Master.

Hill writes extensively about Kaela's thoughts and feelings as she struggles with the fight between her vampire nature and her true submissive self. So... there's a lot of navel-gazing. And while it certainly vividly illuminates the D/s dynamic, it can get a little circular...and honestly, I struggled to get through some it. But later on the story picks up momentum, and it's great when Kaela has to make the ultimate submission -- allowing Garron to choose his destiny.

So..while I'm not generally a PR fan, and mostly stay away from vampire/werewolf stories, this one was definitely a worthwhile read.

This is an amazing story of a vampire used to having to be in charge all the time but dreaming of
being a submissive behind closed doors. Kaela live her life as a Vapire Overlord which means
she can never show weakness or she will be made a slave to a more powerful and possibly
cruel vampire. Which for her is not a pleasant thought.
Kaela finally agrees to go to eden. when she arrives she meets the very dominate Garron.
He informs her he will be the one in charge of all her needs and her care. As Garron lays
down the rules to her she finds it hard to let out her submissive side and fights him. Garron
stands his ground as a true Master. He finally begins to show her the joys of being a submissive.
Garron has discovered a sub he feels he can really care about. Convincing her that he is strong
enough to be the Master she needs. She fears that he can not appear to be submissive when others
are around in her world. This is about to be tested when two vampires that know Kaela well appear
on the Island. .Kaela has to stand by and watch as Garron is treated like a submissive.
Will Kaela realize Garron is strong enough for the two of them or will Kaela try to turn of her
true nature?
This books is not for those under the age of 18 of if you cannot handle graphic sexual scenes and
BDSM scenes.

Story needed 'padding' - it was wham bam from the start.
Hill is an amazing talent - one of her books (Ice Queen-Mirror of My Soul) is in the Top 5 of all stories I have *ever* read in my life, and many of her novels are 4-5 stars.
But this one, with a great H and a great h and a great H/h, and a great premise, was 4,000+ kindle pages of BDSM only and I need some other stuff around that.

It took me forever to get through this book. I really like Joey Hill and her vampire world is one of the best out there but this one was too angsty for me. I mean at some point accept your submissive tendencies and move on. I just couldn't get into this one.

A great addition

I enjoyed this book. I have not read the Invitation to Eden series but love the Vampire Queen series. Love that there can be a submissive vampire. An interesting story that is very well-written written and engaging.

This story has one of the plot devices that I have come to dislike, the big misunderstanding. It drives me crazy. These two are involved in one of the relationships that force the couple to be honest with each other. Learning what each one needs to be happy. However Kaela can't get past what will happen if the vampires find out that she is submissive. I understand Kaela is trying to protect Garron from the vampires she has to deal with however she sales Garron short to be able to handle the situation. All she has to do is watch Jacob and Gideon. Both are strong dominant men that have found peace and love with a very strong dominant vampires. I mean neither Dagean or Lyssa are cream puffs for heaven sakes. Of course Lady Lyssa and Lord Dagean aren't submissive either. While this bothers me it shouldn't distract anyone from the story overall. All that Garron has survived and learned to thrive should be acknowledged and celebrated. If he were a vampire I think he would be much like Dagean.

I love that Garron refuses to let Kaela give up on the relationship that is forming between the two of them. Kaela can't seem to get past what will happen to Garron when they are around other vampires. It is frustrating and upsets me no end. For all Kaela has had happen in her long life she can't seem to get past what might happen. I am glad that things work out for these two even though there were times that I was sure I was going to end up putting the book through wall. It doesn't happen often but it is usually a attribute of a well written story. Ms. Hill is one of those storytellers that can't seem to write a bad story.

I usually five star a Joey Hill book but for some reason this book just left me feeling bored. I felt that because she was a vampire that he couldn't really "hurt" her. It was like a "normal" BDSM relationship rather than a vampire BDSM relationship. The submissive allows the pain but what kind of pain does a vampire really feel if wielded by a human? The dominance is agreed to, really more mental than physical because she could have stopped it any time, as if there had been a safeword. In the other books in the Vampire Queen series there are no safewords.
Maybe I need to read it another time.

I love the Eden books. This is a new author for me who seems to have a large following. I get the feeling this was a novella in her vampire series.
I pushed this to three stars but cannot really justify doing so.
I loved Garron, he was an amazingly diverse Hero. But I do not believe he can, or will, survive in the vampire world. It seems savage and a human body can only take so much punishment, no matter how strong the mind may be. I have visions of Garron being terribly abused and hurt.
Kaela tried to do the right thing but ended up being selfish.
The worst part for me was the constant repetitive thinking by Kaela and the whole BDSM thing became boring and tiring.

WOW!! I never saw that coming, never even imagined it. I’ll get back to this but first. . . The Vampire Queen Series was my introduction to Joey W Hill and I know that series inside and out. Joey is amazing with the physical nature of BDSM in her stories but she also uses the psychological side of this lifestyle with expertise as well. Elusive Hero is one of the stories that prove this.

As with most of Joey W Hill’s stories I wanted it to continue. They always seem to short. You would think that statement means this is a bad story. I can tell you it is anything but. She has a knack of writing a totally satisfying story that leaves you wanting more. Giving you the opportunity to use your own imagination to take the characters where you want them to go. At least until we get a visit from them in another story. *wicked grin*

Joey’s vampires are smart, strong, beautiful and very dominant whether born or made, male or female. So when I heard that Kaela Overlord of the California Territory, a made vampire, had a secret I never imagined it would be that one of

those traits would be missing. Before Kaela was turned she was a submissive. This is her secret, not that she was submissive but that she still is.

Kaela longs to submit to a Master, not a vampire Master but a human Master. In the vampire world this is a death sentence or worse. She could become a pawn or slave to a more powerful vampire. She has learned to control and hide this from the vampire world. But as we all know you can only control something you desire for so long. When Kaela receives an invitation to the Eden Resort she is torn between risking the chance to embrace her desires or to stay strong and continue to leave those desires behind.

This is where I should tell you a little about our hero Garron. I’m not going to though. Garron is one man/Dom you are going to want to experience the same way Kaela does, one moment at a time.

If you have been reading the Invitation to Eden series you know the island and the resort not only give it’s guests the dreams they desire but have also given our authors a chance to take their characters in a direction they may have only dreamed of. Places we reader never dreamed of.

Enjoy your vacation to Eden!

Elusive Hero is book 12 in the Vampire Queen series and can be read as a standalone.

Vampires are strong. Vampires are confident. Vampires are dominant. To be a vampire’s human servant can be an honor. However, it can also be a lifelong slave-like confinement if the vampire has an egotistical mentality.

Lady Kaela is ruthless when it comes to her position as the Vampire Overlord of the California Territory. Yet, when it comes to the bedroom, Kaela secretly craves to submit to a human Master. But, Kaela knows this can never be because in the vampire world this is a death sentence. Kaela has successfully managed to hide her yearnings for close to two hundred years. That is until she receives an invitation to the Eden Resort where she could freely embrace her heart’s desire without suffering from any consequences.

Garron Rand is scarred both physically and emotionally. It has taken years but he has effectively managed to heal emotionally while working at the Eden Resort as one of their elite Dominants. Garron is intrigued by Lady Kaela’s predicament and volunteers to help her rediscover her submissive side during her ten-day stay.

Neither expected to find love as a result of their Dom/submissive play. Can Garron be a Master to Lady Kaela in the bedroom and a human servant in the public eye?

No one can write an outstanding BDSM plus-size novel like Joey H. Hill. As one of her fans, I know that I am in for a treat with her novels. Elusive Hero has Ms. Hill’s trademark literature style of exceptional character development, exquisite romance, sizzling hot BDSM encounters and opposing engagement. This breathtaking tale is not for the faint of heart, for the BDSM play is powerful, erotic, and fierce in nature. So, if you are in the mood for a unique, thrilling, luscious tale that will leave you breathless with heated desire; then, look no further because Elusive Hero will hit the spot.

I'm only giving this book 4 stars. Reason being, even though it is very well written, it just wasn't my cup of tea. The level it went to in the BDSM world is way beyond my comfort zone. Being a fan of Joey's and knowing going in I wouldn't care for it didn't stop me from reading it and giving it a fair review. I have read everyone of the Invitation to Eden books and wasn't going to pass up Joey's book just because it went out of my comfort zone. In fact there were a couple other books I wasn't fond of but still gave an honest and fair review. For the fans of Joey's that are into that level of BDSM and who enjoy her portrayal of Vampires, I'm sure they will love it. Me personally I like a more humanized vampire than what the heroine in this books reveals. Don't get me wrong, I love a badass, human or otherwise but the vamp heroine in this book portrays vampires as beings who basically think humans are no more than servants to them and to be used, usually very cruelly, especially in a sexual way, as they so desire. Not my cup of tea as i stated, I want my vamp to be more compassionate. Yeah, I know I'm a sap and a light weight but that's my choice and as Garron was finally able to make Kaela understand. It all comes down to our OWN choices and being allowed to follow those choices ;-)
So as always, Joey did an awesome job writing this book and I know that even though it pushed my personal boundaries way the hell out of proportion, I know something else she writes will be right up my alley because that is what Joey does, gives her fans what they want. Can't wait for the next Knights of the Boardroom books ;-)

What can I say ... this is a Joey-masterpiece !!!!! after this book and all the others I can honestly say that I have SEEN and READ it ALL !!!!! and I do mean all LOL !!!

This book is special cause we get to see how it is when the roles are reversed and a vampire (who by nature should be a dominant) is actually a sub and the struggle of wants, needs and the harsh, often brutal reality !!!

and let me tell you ---- Joey didn't disappoint !!! Garron and Kaela are what a new love is suppose to be and has all the problems and troubles. when you add to it the vampire nature, the reverse roles and the protective streak that doesn't seem democratic ("I say so and it's the end of discussion - pretty much like this the whole book)you get a masterpiece that is a bit short for my taste and has all you learned to expect from a book from Joey W. Hill.

at a point, you get thrown back with all the other characters from the Vampire Queen series (I ended up re-reading them all over again ----- the symptom occurs now 3 times a year) and I have to say as a fan of this writer, I couldn't help but to compare Garron to Ben Callahan (Hostile Takeover). have to say, got me all tingly hihihih

I whole-hardheartedly recommend this book to all that love a complicated but beautiful HEA (we hope, who knows with Joey)

Another absolutely fantastic book by Joey W. Hill in the continuing Vampire Queen Series. This book I loved so much that it was a read in one evening book, in other words couldn't put it down. There are very few authors that I buy the books in both print and eBook formats, but Joey is one of them.

Merged review:

Another Fantastic Book by Joey W. Hill

Eden a magical island where your wants, yearnings and desires are brought got fruition. Vampire overlord, Kaela rules her territory with both fairness and a strong hand. But secretly she is a submissive. A big no no in the vampire world, it could mean her death.
Garron Rand, Dominant, former military and totally perfect in his Dominance. (sigh)
I finished this journey of Kaela and Garron with a feeling of happiness, acceptance of who you are and that you make changes to your life to ultimately be who you are. What a wonderful, sexy and engaging ride we take with these two.
For lovers of vampires this is a must read.

Let me start by saying I DO NOT READ PARANORMAL - VAMPIRE-WEREWOLVE BOOKS - BLAH - NO INTEREST.
However, when I am needy to read me some Joey W. Hill, & the only book I have not read that is in my nook is a vampire read, well..... I "bit" into it and OH, MY, MY ,MY why would I doubt that she could turn me into her "third mark"& become totally devoted to anything she writes !?

Joey drew me into such deep emotions of these characters, that she left me weeping more than once
Vampire overlord Kaela, a secret submissive goes to Eden to finally live out her fantasy with Garron Rand, the Dominant who relentlessly works, teaches, breaks thru years of conditioning to take her where she desperately wants to go - on her knees in service to Her Own Master.

The intensity of emotions Ms. Hill delivers with words tears at your heart as she takes us along Kaela's & Garron's journey.

Joey again - you have marked me as your forever Reader-Servant !

***YES! YES! YES!***

I don't even know where to begin....

First:
This is by far and away my favorite book in this series. As much as I absolutely love Jacob and Lyssa, Mason, Dev, and all the others.... I'm totally "IN LOVE" with Garron and Kaela.

Second:
It's about time there is a submissive vamp! I know even Lyssa hits that submissive state with Jacob, at times. Just the fact, though, that Kaela is utterly and completely submissive; and to a human, awes me.

Third:
The true conflict of this story wasn't vampire politics this time; but actually self flagellation at ones own desires. Not in the human/servant....but the vampire. The story is perfect! I love Garron's ability to seek out Kaela's desires, needs, and wants. He opens her to her inner self and frees her from herself. I look forward to how they handle their relationship and dynamic in the future.
Joey W. Hill is a truly magnificent genius!

This book was so hot! This was my first Joey book. I will definitely be reading more! Not a book to be read in public or without someone to help you relieve the built up need you will feel after (or during)! ;) Garron and Kaela were an amazing pair. I loved the evolution of their relationship as well as within themselves. Both have been hurt physically and mentally, yet they persevered and developed the strength of character needed to survive. Throughout the book, Kaela had to push past her boundaries to find the release she's been needing for 175 years. And Garron finally found the submissive that he's longed for, someone who could handle is level of mastery. By the end, they were stronger for their connection with one another. I would love to see more of them in the world outside of Eden.

A submissive vampire?! What?!?! No one could pull this off but the amazing Joey W. Hill! Her BDSM Vampire world is very intense and Elusive Hero just adds more intensity to that world and I think Joey shows us the meaning of and the need for the BDSM credo "Safe, Sane & Consensual". This story had me on pins and needles wondering how it could possibly end happily and at one point I was in tears knowing it could never work out. The ending made me very happy and I would love to see how Garron and Kaela make their relationship work back in Lady Lyssa's world.

I am not familiar with the mind's complete submission required for Lady Kaela to find peace, but I accept the tenets of the BDSM lifestyle. Setting that aside, the depth of Garron's resolve to be everything that Kaela needs is astonishing. If every couple gave to each other a fraction of what Garron and Kaela gave to each other, the divorce rate would plummet. Once again, Joey has given us another piece of "Relationship 101" through the unlikely source of a vampire Overlord, a BDSM master and Mr. Roarke's perfect replacement. Now, how do I get an invitation?

I presume you know what the book is about. I'm letting you know what I liked or disliked about it.

Whoa! I never saw Garron coming. Or Kaela for that matter.

And Garron?... Whoa. His intensity level is my favorite flavor.

One of the best additions to the series I've read. I simply adore the author JWH is. I know. Poor grammar but it is what it is. haha

Anyway - great read!

WOW!! This is the12th in the Vampire Queen Series, and it did not disappoint. Vampires are strong, alphas, dominant, male or female but not always...Not deep inside. When Karla accepts an invitation to an exclusive island vacation and accepts maybe, just maybe there she can be her true self. A submissive, the biggest twist is that the Master she desires is human. A taboo in the Vampire world in every aspect. Thank you Joey W Hill for your wicked, wicked mind.

Please say this isn't the end of this series! Don't get me wrong, I loved this book just as much as all the others, but I want more! Garron and Kaela's story needs more time to unfold, for one! I was just as immersed as ever in this book, but am dying to see what happens next. I guess I'll try some of Ms. Hill's other books in the meantime.
