"I'm not suited for solo missions," I say over the com.
"Sure you are," I hear Morgan say, "you can handle anything."
"He can," I hear most of the zoo kids agree. "Man, remember the time he caught the kitchen on fire? He didn't even break a sweat!"
"Which time?" Morgan asks, laughing. "Relax, Vinny, you can do this with your eyes closed. You'll be back home with us before you know it, I promise."
Why do they have so much faith in me? I look in the bathroom mirror, seeing a punk with glowing earrings looking back at me. I’m surprised Jack didn’t convince me to pierce more than just my ears, honestly. He’s way too happy with a piercing needle for my tastes. “There’s one thing Century didn’t mention,” I say almost silently. “I’m here to prove that Cape High is actually teaching the students enough to send the South Branch kids to it.”
“Interesting,” Nico says. “Well it doesn’t matter to me, I only took this job because it’s part of my probation. If there are less kids involved there’s less work for me.”
I choke, shocked, and then burst into laughter at that reply. “Aw, man, that’s good to know,” I admit. “I was feeling a bit of pressure there.”
Vinny is a fire mimic and has the potential to be a great super. Unfortunately, after his experience with the Collector, his ambitions only entail looking after the Zoo kid supers and cooking. But, what he wants and what he gets is an entirely different matter.
Although this isn't one of my favourite books in the series, I came to like Vinny's character who prefers a passive quiet life in contrast to the other capes.
This story primarily takes place in Texas where Vinny has been sent on his first solo mission to infiltrate a gang claiming to be teen capes. At stake is a young cape who is in way over her head, but Vinny has his own issues, and not all of them from his time in the 'zoo'.
I really enjoyed this story - I wasn't sure initially because Vinny is such a minor character in the earlier books, but this story shows that he is well deserving of his own story. The story was engaging, and it certainly set things up for the rest of the arc. It is now my second favourite book of the series, and it is nice to see the world outside of Cape High.
He can control fire, he cooks. That's all that's special about him. Really. Only, the rest of the world isn't believing Vincent. They say he has potential as a superhero and send him on a mission.
What's really enjoyable here is that for the first time we see the world outside Cape High and the usual crew. And I enjoyed that world a lot! Though, with this book the romance part finally got REALLY predictable. Maybe just let it slide next time? Vinny had more than enough plot without it anyway.
I started this book not really caring for the character whose perspective the story is told through. By the end, I really liked him. I really want to see how him and his family dynamics develop but not sure if it will happen due to the shifting perspectives of each book.
Cape High stories with novella about Fire Hazard, the other identity of Vinnie the devoted to cooking teenager zoo kid. This series is Christian based without being preachy or sectarian.
