The independent and beautiful Miss Camilla Quinn had never experienced the slightest interest in any of her suitors, even the Marquis of Lilliheun, surely the best catch of the ton. So she could scarce explain her sudden sweet tendre for...a highwaymen! The handsome blackguard robbed her coach, left her with a kiss, and absconded with her very heart! As for Jason Fate, thief by trade, he could not forget the lady who looked like an angel. When they finally met again at a London soiree, Jason was impersonating the newly discovered heir to a dukedom in an absolutely dastardly scheme that would make the most seasoned gentleman quake in his boots. Camilla's duty was to denounce him. But she simply could not. Alas, she loved him! And soon Camilla's mission to transform an unregenerate scoundrel into a fine gentleman would take her where ladies feared to tread -- from the dazzling heights of the aristocracy to the darkest depths of a city...where saving Jason could be her ruin -- or most improper, impossible, and irresistible Fate.
Since the publication of Amelia's Intrigue in 1995, Judith A. Lansdowne's Regency romances have received critical acclaim, garnered awards and entertained thousands of romance readers. Ms. Lansdowne began writing full-time in 1992, but it was only after her daughter introduced her to Regency romances that her work was published.
She grew up in Kenosha, Wisconsin. Following graduation from St. Joseph High School, she attended the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York, then spent several years touring the country as an actress and puppeteer with Nicolo Marionettes and the Sid and Marty Krofft organization.
Tiring of the constant travel, she returned to Kenosha to attend the University of Wisconsin-Parkside, where she met her husband Al, a retired submariner, and graduated with highest distinction. Following graduation she worked variously as a journalist, instructional television writer/producer, textbook production editor, college instructor, and television news videographer. When her husband finally got a real job, she settled down to writing full time, producing a horror novel, a vampire novel and a Restoration historical novel, all still unpublished, before finally "making it" with Regency romance. When her husband retired (he didn't like the real job) they moved to the shores of Lake Guntersville, Alabama, where she is pursuing a career in fishing and he moves dirt around the yard. They write when the weather is bad.
Upon finding out the woman he removed from the coach was the Earl of Wheymore's cousin "he tugged the kerchief down from his face and bowed, brushing cool soft lips across the inside of Camilla's wrist.....'Tis Jason Fate welcomes ye, darlin'. He kept hold of her hand and raised it high enough to unfasten the clasp of the diamond bracelet she wore. Removing it, he tossed it over his shoulder....'Ye'll not miss such a trifle, heh, cousin?' His fingers flitted like powdered moth wings against the back of her neck and her diamond necklace, too, sailed over his shoulder....'Will ye tell me yer name?', he whispered then...and her diamond eardrops entered the leather pouch as well. 'Come, lass, tell me yer name'....he murmured, when Camilla did not answer, 'tis Hortensia.' Camilla's eyes lit with mirth. 'Not Hortensia? Euphegenia then. 'No-o,' breathed Camilla on a tiny giggle. 'Aw, darlin, don't be makin' me guess. I ain't good at it- Daisy? Amaryllis? Rhododendron? I'd give my life to know yer name.' Almost mesmerized Camilla felt his strong arms lift her back into the coach."
And so they met for the first time and they would meet again. Soon. And she became his 'Dendron'.
CAMILLA'S FATE is a play on words. Her 'fate' is, of course, Jason. It seems that these two people were predestined to meet. They have a sweet attraction for each other. Think of 'Pygmalion' because bits of the play are infused within the pages.
Jason is the complete opposite of Camilla. She is educated, he does not know how to read or write. He is part of the common people and street-savvy, she is a member of the ton. His speech was appalling; he tortured the English language. She was attempting a career as an authoress. And yet, they fit together like pieces of a puzzle.
There is a mild mystery concerning the identity of Jason that the reader will figure out long before the characters of the book do. But that is okay. There is some mild suspension of disbelief because of the story's goofiness. Without it, the plot would have become ho-hum. The reason for four stars instead of five? I will admit the dialogue of Jason and his friends was annoying at times; I had to reread sections of the book to figure out what everyone was saying. But is was a necessary evil essential to the storyline and my problem to acknowledge.
CAMILLA'S FATE was lighthearted even though there was a criminal plot. It was silly at times but that drove the conspiracy. I considered this book a clean romance even though there was a presumption of sex, after marriage, in the HEA. And like Camilla, you can't help but fall in love with Fate. I was amazed more people have not read this Regency romance.
2021 bk 294. I'm not sure I have touched this book in many years - I know I havn't because I found it at the back of the bookshelf. Such a same too as there were lots of scenes of laughter and joy. Mysteries abound when a claimant to the heir of a dukedom appears and he turns out to be the man who had robbed the coach Camilla had traveled in. As a budding author, she knew a mysterious hero and good source of a plot when she sees one. What she didn't plan on was falling in love... Oh, not only was it enjoyable but Wright and his wife, Eleanor make more appearances in this title.
Camilla is traveling to London when her coach is robbed by the notorious highway man, Jason Fate. A few weeks later she recognizes him at a ballroom in London. He claims to be the missing heir to a dukedom. Camilla is drawn to him and starts to help him navigate in society and enlists her family to help as well.. But there are many secrets and undercurrents swirling around them, some of which could be deadly. The reader can guess pretty quickly who Jason really is, but the characters are endearing and fun to read about anyway.
