Fealty of the Bear

Rate this book
After years of stagnancy, Muriel Marsden leaves the legendary clan of Hells Canyon bear shifters and goes rogue in order to discover herself. Her trip is cut short when she stumbles upon an injured man alone in the wilderness. As his only chance for survival, Muriel brings him to her cabin and works to save his life.

The man is half feral and all sexy. He’s a rogue bear shifter like Muriel, yet his actions make no sense. When her ex, Bronson Cress, enlists the help of her new patient, Muriel can’t help but be dragged along for the ride. If she can learn to trust the secretive new man along the way, she just might find the life she yearns for.

Logan O’Connor is running from the trackers who are after him. Seeking sanctuary with the Hells Canyon shifters is his only shot at survival, but it’s not just his life at stake. When Logan meets the timid, stunning woman who is willing to save a stranger, he knows his heart is in deep trouble.

Logan discovers just how strong Muriel is beneath her quiet exterior, but his interest in her brings them both great risk. He must choose whether to keep her for himself, or leave to draw the danger of his dark past away from the woman he’s falling for.

2.5/3 stars. It was... kind of meh.

I would have liked it a lot more if there was that big fight at the end that I'd been waiting for... But still, it was a short, relaxing (although not the most impressive) novella. Worth giving it a try if you have nothing better to do.

I didn’t read this the last time around, but I got curious about who killed Trent, so I decided to peek… and the prologue snatched my attention, but then it sort of started to fizzle because I wasn’t a huge Muriel fan. **This review will be spoilery with several excerpts.**

My biggest grump was the change in narrative, which is a peeve of mine. I latch onto details, so it makes me crazy when authors just change things to fit their current plot or character. Since this is Muriel’s book, she is now a victim and martyr. I’m not saying she was a villain before but stay consistent with the facts. This almost reads like Bron was more invested into their marriage and more open to making it work when that wasn’t the case in his book. (so we could believe in a Bron/Sam 💘connection)

And Bron was so angry with me.” Tears streamed down her face as she spoke. “He thought I’d given up on him, but that wasn’t it at all. If he was ever going to have a chance at happiness, I had to do this.

AND…

The woman was basically a saint. She’d made a decision against her clan’s laws to give Bronson a shot at happiness, and now she was stuck as a rogue.

BUT… last book we got this …..

“I used to hate you,” she whispered. She sounded so sad. “Bron loved you. Couldn’t stop loving you no matter how hard he tried and no matter how hard I tried to make him. He used to say your name when he was with me— called me Sam by accident.

AND…

”Why did you help me?” My father is trying to force a reconciliation with Bron.”
I can’t choose another mate until Bron isn’t an option for me.”

I don’t see why she needed to rewrite their history… Muriel wasn’t the bad guy and having her want to make the marriage work doesn’t take away from her and Logan… but it does take away from Sam and Bron by switching it. She can have her HEA without making her a saint. Her reasons for helping Sam were in a way self-serving but understandable.

Also, as I mentioned in my last review it frustrates me that the whole “Bron and Muriel being married and having sex” is brought up constantly, but never really addressed. For example, we get this….

“Where’s Sam?” she asked. “In the bedroom.” She brushed by him and froze at the open doorframe to the bedroom she and Bron used to share. It was so strange to be back in this place that had been home once.

And…

“What the fuck is this?” Logan asked in a low snarl. He was standing across the living room from Bron, but that didn’t matter. The men could be locked up in a second if they wanted to be. In his hand he gripped a picture that used to hang from the wall near the office. In it, she and Bron were formally posed as a happy mated pair….

“I haven’t taken them down yet. I’ve been a little busy, what with the funeral and all.” “Bullshit. We were separated for years before Trent died. They should’ve been trashed a long time ago.”

He has an explanation, but I still find it hard to believe that Sam would move in with him with those pictures on the wall, and never ask about the room situation. Not to mention, according to the last book they stayed in different bedrooms, but here it makes it seem like it was more… make in consistent.

All we really get is…

“Do you think it’s weird to be around me?”
“Why would it be?” Samantha asked.
“Because I was married to your mate. Because I was the reason he had to leave you. Geez, because I had carnal knowledge of Bron. This just has the potential to be really awkward.”

Her unrealistic reply…

Maybe it would be strange if you’d loved him. Did you?” "No."

I get it, the author isn’t interested in generating any drama from this situation…well then quit bringing it up!!

Bottom Line- Ok, but frustrating, and we get no closure on the Trent situation… which is a trend of this series… introducing conflicts then ignoring them… like the uprising and Shira situation that’s left unaddressed. The original couple is almost always my favorite which is probably my problem here. It annoyed me that Bron was portrayed as being invested in his previous marriage. (upset by divorce, keeping pictures up) These things add nothing to Muriel’s story but detracted from Bron’s. Next up is Reese, and I believe we finally figure out who killed Trent, but I'm over it. :)

Even if its only for a short while?

description

If we could, I would have given this book a 3.5star rating. But I can't so I rounded up. While I did enjoy the book and I found it hot and steamy. I had issues. Like the inta-love. I mean serious and immediate insta-love. I felt that the relationship advanced much to quickly and unrealistically. That is truely my biggest issue with it. However there were a few parts where I got the feels and that was great. I'll continue on with the series as I think its worth finishing.

How I choose my rating:
1* Did not finish, or hated it but forced myself to finish.
2** Didn't really like it. Didn't hate it but not sure why I finished it other then for some closure.
3*** I liked it. I had some issues with it, but as a whole it was good. I probably won't reread again ever, but there is a chance I might finish the series. (If part of one) But if not it's not a huge loss.
4**** I really liked this book. Maybe not a work of genius, but highly entertaining. I might reread this again, and I will finish the series. (If part of one) I would recommend to those I know hold interest in this books content.
5***** I loved this book. I found little to no issues with it at all. I will definitely be rereading this and probably more than once. I will finish the series and reread it multiple times. (If part of one) I will recommend this book to EVERYONE!!!!

Dodger, the alpha attacks Samantha, Bron' s mate. Be in kills him and becomes alpha. he calls in his ex, Muriel to help Sam. Muriel helps Sam change into her bear form and then heals her. Muriel then finds an injured shifter in the road and heals him
they fall in love. he marks her but he's a lion not a bear and they worry about acceptance into a bear clan
plus there's a crazed lioness determined to force the lion to breed with her. next up I hope is solving the murder of Bron' s brother. who killed him and why?

This just turned from a casual story into an intriguing and can't wait for the other. I like the abrupt different path the story took it was dramatic and flowed without causing a bump. Muriel could have been a super B!*€# but she wasn't and I really liked her character. I definitely liked Logan he was unique and couldn't wait to read more about him, I enjoyed the way the author linked this series it doesn't seem broken up by book.

Seeking Help!!!

Samantha Young and Bronson Cress found their way back to each other after years apart. They were now mated, she learned a lot about her family's history, she was a guarding, she wasn't supposed to fall in love with one of the shifters she was link between the supernatural world and the human one.

She decided to become a shifter in order for Bron to be able to stay in their hometown of Joseph, Oregon. He was second to the Alpha of the Bear Clan. The Alpha didn't like her so he stabbed her during the meeting. The same meeting she was going to tell them about her being an Andean Bear.

Muriel Marsden, her maker, her new friend and Bron's ex-wife didn't pledge to any Clan after her divorce so she was considered a rogue. Yet she wnet to that meeting because Sam asked her to. She was able to save Sam's life and then she ripped the Clan Hells Canyon Clan a new one for their judgmental thinking.

Bron avenged his mate and was now the new Alpha of the Hells Canyon Bear Clan. Muriel wanted to know if her father was behind what happened to her late brother-in-law, Trent. So when he called to reprimand her for what she did regarding Sam, she was heading to He Devil. On her way there she met an injured rogue bear shifter. He was one of her father's packmate but the man didn't care enough to want to save the rogue's life.

Logan O'Connor, a Lion shifter found himself in Muriel's cabin in the woods after Shira's (Pride Lioness) challengers did a pretty good number on him. His inner beast was intrigued by the woman that saved them. He found out many things about her but when it came time for him to share he held back caus ehe didn't wnat to put her in any danger. They were attracted to one another so being two consensual adults, they took things to the next level. They never expected to find the unexpected.

He claimed Muriel without telling her, she was his and not just for one night like she thought but forever. He needed sanctuary from those after him, he asked Bron but the new Alpha was dealing with the aftermath of his battle with the former Alpha.

Muriel found herself in danger with Logan's enemies came looking for him. What they didn't know was that she wasn't alone, she had her mate's protection. Loved how she handled the truth about Logan, the growing relationship between them, Bron, Sam, Dillon and Reese was a wonderful treat. Two rogues found a place to call home with people they loved and respected as family.

FEALTY OF THE BEAR is the second book in T. S. Joyce's HELLS CANYON SHIFTERS series. It was alluring, fast-paced, humorous and oh so breathtakingly intriguing. T. S. Joyce at me hooked from the first line until the very end of the book.

Reviewed at Shifter Haven

Fealty Of The Bear continues almost where Call of the Bear left us with an intriguing story of survival, growth, and of course, sizzling sexy chemistry between Logan and Muriel.

My heart broke for Muriel in the first story for the way she was used, for the pain she’s experienced through no fault of her own. She’s stronger than she believes, she’s already proven that to the people who should have been her clan-mates but now she’s going to start to see herself through Logan’s eyes and finally own her strength, courage, and the mate she was destined to find. Okay, so he’s not a bear but he is her mate and she will fight to keep him safe and with her.

Logan makes choices that aren’t always wise but they are the right ones for him and eventually, for his mate as well. Watching him heal, being witness to the inner turmoil he faced of doing the right thing or doing the safe thing was an intriguing journey to follow.

Both Logan and Muriel have some growing to do in Fealty Of The Bear, they’ll face challenges, and life together no matter what comes their way. I enjoyed their story very much and will be diving into Avenge the Bear in the next few days. If you love a good Shifter Romance with danger, choices and sizzling hot chemistry then you’ll love this one.

Ooh yeah sequel was just as good - whipped through the book in record sped it was that good. Romance, betrayal and healing.

Muriel OMG the poor girl at 17 unheard of arranged marriage with someone already in love and not wanting to be married just a horrific chain of events. Bron following orders gives up the love of his life for the better of the clan....the worse decision for 3-4 people. Logan talk about chance encounters falls into Muriel's path and leaves her in a he'll of a predicament.......... Violence2, sex2

Muriel’s love match

Muriel and Logan, two unlikely shifters that meet by chance and are mated pair.
Loved how the author surprises me with the different series, interpretation of shifters. Not the same as other writers.
On another note I don’t like this series intro chapter by other characters, beside the lead. Fine if later, but it throws you when they are not the lead in the book.
Did think this story was wonderful and loved the last third the most. Appreciate the authors restraints in dramatic violent scenes. One of my dislikes is too much crammed in. Takes away from the relationship development storyline.

Shifter medicine woman Muriel Marsden was proud of the part she’d played ushering her ex-husband and the female he really loved to a happy ending hoping to clear a path for her own. Annoyed by her father churning her resentment at being a pawn in alliance, Muriel is distracted on her way to give him a piece of her mind!

Sexy rogue shifter Logan O’Connor needs help and sanctuary. Muriel’s dad won’t give Logan sanctuary and Bron can’t but the males hit it off surprisingly well. Muriel’s able and willing to give Logan the help he needs but she didn’t realize she was giving her heart as well and because timing sucks, Logan’s trouble comes knocking at Muriel’s door.

Logan and Muriel

I totally loved this book. Not only because is well written but it has depth. We have meet Muriel in the previous book and I wasn't certain why she would have her own story. But I am so fricking happy she has!!!! We see her her evolve throughout the book and fight for what she wants. Logan is perfect for her. He is a amazing mate to her. Can't wait to read the next one!!!! Highly recommended

Seven Devils Mountains

Wow...I loved this book. It is the story of a female bear who deems herself weak and broken and a male lion looking for a place and a mate to call his own. Logan and Muriel are good for each other. He shows her that she's not broken and she accepts him for who and what he is, a male worthy of a loving mate and steady home.

TS Joyce books are addicting do not start one if you have work the next morning. And if its part of a series make sure you have all the books before starting the first. They are fun and smexy reads with a little dark twist. Each h and H are flawed in ways that makes your heart bleed for them and cheer for their HEA.

Good

So far these books have been ending with something unfinished. Like there is some drama and they get it paused with a “this isn’t over” not exactly a cliffhanger but still. I’m just glad that all these books are out so I can jump to the next book. They are very good and interesting to me.

One feels like a failure in all things woman but she is determined to move forward. Fate has a surprise for her in a chance meeting of an injured shifter and the sparks fly. This is no ordinary shifter but one who is wanted for cubs. Read how a chance encounter, some healing and some intrigue delivers everything they always hoped for. Enjoy!

What an ending

So glad that this book continued the story of Sam and Bron while giving Muriel that happiness that she deserves. Sam and Muriel being friends is like the most unlikely friendship ever but they definitely make it work. Can't wait until Shira is handled.

It was so easy to like Muriel after everything was sorted with Being. This book let you get to know her and see her side while also offering her real happiness. Then of course a nice little twist and the secrets of Logan to add a little intrigue to the sleepy town of Joseph.
