The Eisner- and Scream Awards-nominated series continues! Dodge takes possession of the crown of shadows, and darkness falls upon Keyhouse... with a vengeance.
Joe Hill's debut, Heart-Shaped Box, won the Bram Stoker Award for Best First Novel. His second, Horns, was made into a film freakfest starring Daniel Radcliffe. His other novels include NOS4A2, and his #1 New York Times Best-Seller, The Fireman... which was also the winner of a 2016 Goodreads Choice Award for Best Horror Novel.
He writes short stories too. Some of them were gathered together in his prize-winning collection, 20th Century Ghosts.
He won the Eisner Award for Best Writer for his long running comic book series, Locke & Key, co-created with illustrator and art wizard Gabriel Rodriguez.
He lives in New Hampshire with a corgi named McMurtry after a certain beloved writer of cowboy tales. His next book, Strange Weather, a collection of novellas, storms into bookstores in October of 2017.
This time too, Dodge is one step ahead of Locke brothers, who don't even know he's an enemy. In this issue he comes into possession of the 'Crown of Shadows' with its key and is able to unleash the shadows against the Locke.
Meanwhile, where is the mother? Drinking at a bar. I wonder if she will recover before the end of the series and help his children or end up miserable.
The connection between Peter Pan looking for his shadow (in the tale read by Randall to Bode) and the idea of shadows coming to life thanks to the crown is interesting.
That bald guy is really good for kinsey i hope they get together. Dodge is getting out of hand and now he is attacking the whole house with shadows. The mother really needs to get her shit together at this point she is the one who needs supervision not her kids.
As much as I love the story, this damn mother is always drunk, disheveled and looks unwashed. She has 3 children and a home to look after, but she rather drink at home all day long and when she goes out, she drinks again. When her daughter confronts her about her drinking, she acts defensive and drinks more. I just don’t like the woman, or the reason behind her character being drunk all the damn time. How does that add to the story? How does it add dimension or intrigue to the plot?
The story follows the Locke siblings; the curious young Bode, his rebellious sister Kinsey and his mature brother Tyler. After their father is tragically murdered in a mysterious home invasion, they move to their ancestral home in Lovecraft (a very suitable name for the hellish place they're moving into) with their alcoholic mother. The Locke house holds many strange secrets, keys that unlock forbidden powers and ancient evils never meant to be released. It turns out that the murder of the Locke family's father may not have been a coincidence. There are higher forces at play, manipulating the living from the shadows and orchestrating the downfall of the entire world.
This was a great surprise. I've been reading manga my entire life, but I confess that I never got into American comics and graphic novels (until now that is.) This series managed to win me over and open up an entire new medium of fiction to me. I was impressed by how realistic and human the characters are, there are so many unique people that are developed with utmost respect and is an example of diversity done extremely well. It really does rival the best of Stephen King and other big horror writers of the same ilk. It's got body swapping, spirit battles, mind-bending powers, ghosts and demons, heavy metal culture, blood and guts, tears and trauma, it's a thrilling ride all the way through.
Every volume packed a handful of punches. Volume 4 was the weakest of the series but even that one had a strong finish that eventually led to an even stronger ending. Suffering and grief is portrayed with rich emotion. The character development is moving. The villain is merciless and is actively involved with the plot at all times. All the side characters play a big role in the climactic finale and they all get the satisfying resolutions they deserve. Great series.
Luke finds the Crown of Shadows. This crown is exactly what it sounds like: it lets him work with shadows, which I'm guessing are evil. He is using the shadows to try to find the Omega Key and the key to the Wellhouse.
”Crown of Shadows Chapter Three: Last Light” starts with Tyler chasing Bode because Bode stole his hate and won’t give it back until Tyler gives him back the Head key.
They stumble onto a giant key carved into the floor of a room. Tyler notices a large window that looks like a lock.
Nina is talking to a copy about Sam’s murder/accidental death. Nina called the cop to talk about Brian Rogan’s murder (Duncan’s boy friend, run down by a drunken woman). She shows the cop the key she found (that Dodge dropped as he was escaping after being a ghost and fighting Sam, who was also a ghost. I just noticed Dodge ‘Pac-Man’ ghost t-shirt. That’s funny!). The cop says that Sam had tattoos of keys on his body. He’ll see if they match.
Kinsey confronts her mother with her drinking. Cause remember she took the fear out of her head. Her mother barks back at Kinsey going for a swim late with some boys. Tyler tells Kinsey to stop badgering mom. Kinsey leaves.
Kinsey’s friends give her a life vest. The boating kind.
Dodge keys into the house and sneaks around looking for keys while Tyler’s in the other room. He finds one. He uses the key to go into a catacomb like place filled with lit candles. He finds a black crown. He puts the key in the crown. The crown commands shadows.
Another good one. Art is good as always. Plot is unexpected as always. 3 stars.
Now, what the hell this Shadowland is? Dodge has played another hand to find the black key and also to find the key they lost. Let's see what else happens.
I have always loved comics, and I hope to always love them. Even though I grew up reading local Indian comics like Raj Comics, Diamond Comics, or even Manoj Comics, now's the time to catch up on the international and classic comics and Graphic novels. I am on my quest to read as many comics as I can. I love comics to bits, may the comics never leave my side. I loved reading this and love reading more, you should also read what you love and then just Keep on Reading.
Great story. The art continues to impress. Especially the settings, background, and scenery. Masterful facial expressions. And also seeing the surprise, wonder, and joy of discovering a new key!
