Few words entice and incite like the word witchery. Thousands of selfidentified witches, pagans, and magical practitioners embrace the word, but seldom go beyond the practice of the wellaccepted and learned forms of "traditional" witchcraft to explore the path of oldwitchery. Orion Foxwood invites readers to walk on the path of oldstyle witchery, a naturebased practice that is as old as the swamps and as wild as the woods. For the first time, Foxwood reveals some of his own deeply personal rituals and spells directly from his own grimoire of witchery; he highlights the differences (and similarities) between Wicca, "traditional" witchcraft, and old style witchery. By weaving his own path to witchery throughout the book, he gives readers examples of how to identify the way toward this path. There is a revolution among the Pagan and Witchcraft communities, a movement away from prescribed ritual and neopagan practices and a reaching back toward what Foxwood says is in the heart of any true a thundering call deep within their very blood to become a healer, a reckoner, a protector of magical arts, and a guardian of the wild woods.
Great book for people looking into this Pagan path. It's different than the one I follow but has many of the same premises. I'll definitely keep it around for friends who are interested in a different path. It's one of the books I would have definitely recommended others if I were still in a coven.
This book is not my favorite, but it surely isn't bad. Some witches who are interested in traditional style witchcraft may find value in this book, as well as hearing Orion Foxwood's personal stories. It dragged a little bit too long at parts for me and I don't think I learned anything new from it.
Here I tout the glories of the library, because if I had paid for this, I would be one unhappy witch.
How could a book this short contain almost no information? Sure, there is some, but it's extremely biased opinion of the author. He seems to be saying that you MUST be involved with other witches in some manner, or you simply can't be a witch. Sometimes it feels like he's skirting around flat out saying that, unless you happen to have come from a family of witches, then you yourself cannot be one, or if you somehow manage it, then you'll never have much power because you don't have "witch blood". Maybe I got the incorrect impression, but that's what it seemed like he was saying to me.
If you just want to read everything out there about this subject, then have at this, I guess, but if you're looking for real, practical, and useable information about witches and witchcraft, I'd say skip this.
This book is probably the best book I've read on witchery (witchcraft) so far. It isn't fluffy and pretty, it is truthful and explanatory. It's a quick read and I highly suggest it for any new (especially) or established pagan. I've gotten more information out of this book than any I've read so far. Please add this one to your list.
I can honestly say such a work as this will be invaluable to those seeking a spark to light the fires of inspiration and desire to study the old ways and learn to understand them with a modern mind. Not an easy achievement, this is a book worthy of serious study. Another excellent work by Mr. Foxwood!
I found that I connected to the descriptions and views on 'witchery' it rang more true to me than many other descriptions. One I want to come back to. I have not done much pure visualization magic and it encouraged me to explore that path more.
This book was fascinating. Easy to read and follow along, you didn’t feel like you were learning, but connecting to the material. I have read several of Orion’s books and they all have such wonderful information. Great book.
Overall I enjoyed this book. It does tend to go over the same points at certain times, and there are definitely times I would wish for a bit more information and depth, but a good book on witchery.
A beautifully written deep dive into witchcraft. Highly recommend…almost feel it should be required reading for those first learning about the subject.
On tapping the essence of the magical current — intriguing read. Has a shamanistic tone and focus on learning from elders. It lacks in structure and versitality; mainly using pure visualisation.
I received this book for free through Goodreads First Reads.
Fascinating! The author takes an abundance of material that is no doubt difficult to put into words and uses it to write a crystal clear description of what it means to be a witch. I was intrigued from the very first pages of the book. Though it is challenging subject matter for those of us with no previous “knowledge” or experience, the book is a captivating read for seekers and non-seekers alike. P.S. There is a poem on pp. 115-116 that is absolutely beautiful.
This book gives some very interesting pointers but it really takes a lot of contemplation and re-reading to start to comprehend everything Orion writes. As he says so himself: there is a lifetime of work hidden in this book.
This book is a bit too bare bones in my opinion. A lot of it is too abstract to be applied to one’s practice. Some elements resonate more but they’re too scattered to avoid this one being a disappointing read.
