I was really entranced by this novel. A Beautiful Love Story that was built on trust. Dave Simpson and Sean Vargos both worked at the same office together. Dave had only been there for about a year and during that time he had been attracted to Sean, but never did anything about it. He was a beautiful man who was outgoing and comfortable with himself. Sean was also a beautiful man who appeared to be shy, but very proficient in his job. Sean had a dark secret which kept him from getting close to anyone other than his female boss. After an office marketing meeting, Dave asked Sean if he would meet him for a drink and dinner after work. Sean agreed to go. After a wonderful dinner and great conversation, they went for a short walk to the park, sat on the park bench, and sat there quietly together. A short time later they stood, Dave gives Sean a soft kiss, takes his hand and they walk back to their cars. Sean asked if he could see Dave again. Dave was hoping this was the beginning of something good. Sean's past relationship was getting in the way. He was afraid of having a real relationship again because his heart had been shattered by another man. Dave knew something was wrong. But Sean also knew that Dave was different. When it came to intimacy, Sean freaked and ran, but Dave was not going to give up on him. Whatever it would take, he would do it. A Day at a Time....That's what it took for Sean to open up to Dave and realize that Dave cared about what Sean wanted and needed. This was a beautiful love story. If you love MM Romance and Love you will love this one. Very tender and sweet. The love of a man that went beyond any flaws.

3.5 Stars ~ Office romance. It can go really well, or horribly, horribly wrong. Luckily for Dave and Sean, they've known each other a year, and have gotten closer in the last six months, so they know the type of man they each are. Their first date is so sweet, it's not surprising when they make a second, and then find themselves moving forward into a relationship.

Dave's life is on track. He's been with the company for a year, is working hard in middle management with ambitions to move upward, slowly and steadily. He's got a nice apartment, with his eye on someday having a little home of his own. Dave has been watching Sean for a long time now, and wanting to get to know him better. Sean has spent the past two years cut off, emotionally, from any thoughts of dating or getting to know someone. A tragedy in his past has left him wary and vulnerable, so he is surprised when he feels himself opening up to Dave. But Sean's doubts about his inability to trust, and commit, have them going one day at a time.

A short, sweet, hurt/comfort story.
The “hurt” part is kept a mystery for good part of the book and is only revealed towards the end, when Sean trusts Jason enough to share his past. So, for most of the book we DO know something has happened to him, but we do not know what (and I kept guessing and discarding ideas all the time).
I loved that Jason and Sean build their relationship one step at a time, Jason always super attentive at keeping things at a pace that is comfortable for Sean.

Very short and sweet romance.

This story is sweet, a little sad and full of chemistry. Jason is such a nice guy, it was lovely to see him fall for Sean. I liked how he stuck with Sean, despite Sean's problems. I'd have liked more detail about each of the MCs, just getting to know what made them tick. I did enjoy the ending though, very cute.

This was a cute premise and I enjoyed both MC's a lot. My only complaint was that the issue that Sean had (trying to get my point across without spoilers) didn't really jive with his character for me. It just seemed very out of place, making the ending a bit disjointed.

A solid romance full of heartache and sweet beginnings. Nic Start delivers the perfect balance of warm fuzzy feeling and anxiety. A Day at a Time is kind of a workplace romance with many of the complications that setting can offer. Dating someone you work with is always taking a chance, because if it doesn't work out, there's usually no avoiding them later.

Sean is a hard working, dedicated guy, and on the outside seems like he's got it all together. Inside, however, he's struggling to overcome a painful past. I really enjoy the suspense Starr adds in the way she gradually reveals the source of his apprehension. Each revelation is like the piece of a puzzle locking into place - a very clever method on Starr's part. I could guess what he'd been through, but until she divulges all the details I wasn't 100% sure.

Dave's a pretty awesome guy. He's super patient and exactly the kind of guy Sean needs. I find him confident yet not cocky, a rather attractive quality in a main character. So many times in building them up, an author goes just a bit too far, but Starr seems to get it. She's in touch with how that kind of strength is an attractive quality, and she utilizes it well. In fact the contrast between Dave and Sean's confidence demonstrates just how much Sean grows and changes during the story.

That reminds me, the one thing that really surprises me is how aggressive and dominant Sean becomes when the two get intimate. I totally didn't expect that! I guess it perfectly shows the change I just mentioned. Sean's really hurting and still healing from what happened in his past. No spoilers, but that kind of experience changes a person, and it's no shock Sean would have some coping mechanisms. As he begins to look past all that and learns to trust David, you see the pain and insecurity fall away. What's left behind is someone who can be who he truly wants to be while learning to trust and love again.

A Joyfully Jay review.

4 stars

I like this story. It is easy to read with two likable men, the angst is light, it is mostly well paced, and it offers just a touch of intrigue to see what is up with Sean. It was just what I was in the mood for. We have tall, good looking Dave who can’t seem to stop glancing over at Sean while he works. Sean is focused on his work and keeps pretty much to himself as he has completely sworn off relationships. When the guys do get together, they have a lot in common, including their attraction to each other. However, every time things start to heat up, Sean freezes, backs down, or bolts. It is a slow build to their relationship and to Sean’s backstory. Sean’s story is not overly shocking, which completely works for the feel of the story.

This is not a full length novel and having read a number of novellas I have developed quite an appreciation for them. There are details interwoven into the narrative which helps the visual on both men, including how they like their coffee, their work habits, and their choice of reading material, which offers a nod to the romance genre. While I enjoyed all of the details and getting to know the men, it also slightly slows the pace of the story given its length. This is not fully realized until the ending, which happens quickly, and had a slight unfinished and rushed feel, although there is a warm HFN. The men take things slow and then there is not much time to enjoy them fully together.

Still, A Day at a Time is a good choice for a story that flows well and can be read from beginning to end in a short amount of time. A story of how life can change when you find the right guy.

Review first published for Nautical Star Books. I received one copy of this book at no charge from the author in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.

In A Day at a Time we meet Dave, who is confident, attractive and has plenty of friends to hang with whenever the need strikes. He also has a secret crush on one of his office mates. Sean is quiet, efficient, and Dave wants nothing more to protect Sean and make him ridiculously happy. Unfortunately, Sean is also a bit skittish when it comes to men. A bad experience in his past leaves him hesitant to risk his heart again. Thankfully, Dave is patient and more than willing to take things slowly. But, when Sean runs, Dave is determined to chase after him and try again!

I really enjoyed A Day at a Time. It is a light and sweet read with only a touch of angst and can easily be read in a couple of hours. The attention to detail in this author’s writing really helps you see each scene in your head…from the type of coffee they drink to the Valentine’s decorations at the office party. Each character is written with equal attention to detail and they are both likeable and realistic men.

I loved how patient Dave was with Sean’s emotional issues, although I didn’t think Sean’s history gave him reason for quite as much angst as he shows in the story (no spoilers here!). But, each person deals with trauma in their own way so maybe Sean is just particularly sensitive! Because of how skittish Sean is, their relationship (both physical and emotional) moves along slowly. They are truly falling in love, one baby step at a time.

If you are looking for a true romance book with characters learning to deal with a bit of emotional baggage, I think you will really enjoy A Day at a Time by Nic Starr!

Original Blog Post: eARC Review: A Day At A Time by Nic Starr

My Rating: 4 of 4 Stars
(Based on Short&Light Read Category)

Occasionally, it is nice to relax and read a short, little story about love and how it can catch people unawares at the most unexpected times. When love's arrow hits, no matter the trauma of past loves, it breaks down the barriers. For Sean, a past relationship ending badly made him wary of getting into the dating game. He feared that to even attempt at investing in a new relationship may just end in him getting hurt. It did not stop him from admiring Dave Simpson whenever he saw him at work, though.

Dave worked with Sean but had a reputation of a playboy. It would have been a nice status if Dave actually liked being a playboy, but he really just was tired of the whole way of life. Deep down, he dreamed of going home into the arms of a trusted and beloved partner. He was thinking, Sean was a good sort. Maybe, if he asked him out, he could have his dream come true.

This was a really nice and romantic read. Whatever angst or drama that came about were sensibly dealt and without much ado. Not to say that a negative self-image is not difficult to overcome, but the way Dave handled it coupled with Sean’s willingness to trust meant theirs was a solid partnership in the making. It made their whole story sweetly romantic.

A truly satisfying read it made me smile.

Sean is a loner, quiet and almost shy. It’s the past haunting him that makes Sean withdraw and keep to himself, but Dave wants to change that. Dave has watched Sean from afar at work, biding his time until the time is right to make his move. Dave realizes he has to tread lightly with Sean, but once the door is opened and Sean tries to close it out of fear, Dave nudges his foot in the opening, and refuses to be shut out.

This was a short, sweet story about the tenacity of one man to prove he is worth the risk, while the person he is trying to prove his worth to continues to push him away. Sean has been hurt and he guards his heart well, too well in fact, for fear of being hurt again. Dave is patient and attentive with Sean and his worries but he is also determined to show Sean that he can let his guard down and be loved.

While I completely understood Sean’s hesitancy and why he worried he’d be hurt if he trusted a man again, the issue in the past didn’t warrant his reflexes in the present. I hope that makes sense, I don’t want to give spoilers. But overall I really enjoyed this story, I blew through it during my lunch hour and the content held my attention throughout. Sean and Dave are pretty sexy once Sean lets his guard down and lets Dave in, pun intended!

This is a short story of two men meeting and falling in love at work. Sean has obviously had a bad experience in the past, which keeps him from simply giving in to the desire he shares with Dave.

Dave, not known for being patient or particularly romantic and faithful, falls for Sean early on and must really show restraint, or lose him forever.

The main conflict here is Sean and this is the story of Sean’s ability to confront his fears and trust again.

**

There were times when I was frustrated by this book. I thought that for a couple who was spending nearly every evening together, there was very little talking occurring (and not because they were having sex either!).

I get that men are not known for their “sharing of emotions” but I think two reasonable adults would have discussed the huge elephant in the room, namely Sean’s reluctance and his past.

Even so, it was a nice story. Fully fleshed out despite being a short story and the writing style was fluid and easy.

I enjoyed it and would look for work by this author in the future.

I give it a 3.5 of 5 hearts.

This quick read was fairly enjoyable. There were things I liked and things I thought were just okay.

I liked that the story dealt with feelings related to past trauma without making it into a “save you” kind of story. I also appreciated that the sex fit well with the themes of the story rather than being “magical.”

I did struggle a bit with the flow of the narrative. I thought the author relied too much on telling rather than showing, especially during the set-up. I also felt like we knew a lot about Sean but very little of Dave. Along those lines, I found the story of what happened to Sean to be rushed and vague. Also, for a story largely set in a corporation, it was odd that we didn’t know anything about their purpose or products until halfway through, and even then not much. A lot of the beginning sounded like it was written in org-speak—it was a bit dull.

Once the relationship between Dave and Sean was established, the story took off and was much better. The first half needed to be of the same quality.

Reviewed by Brandilyn for Prism Book Alliance. A Day at a time by Nic Starr is a sweet and enjoyable office romance. Sadly, there was nothing that stuck out to me to make it special. I liked both the main characters. Sean is vulnerable but willing to take a chance. Dave is outgoing and doesn't take no for an answer. Together they work past Sean's obligatory issues to find a happily ever after. Find the whole review at http://www.prismbookalliance.com/?pos...

Nic Starr is one of my go to authors when I want a sweet read with wonderful characters. I loved Sean and Jason’s story, which was a perfect mix of sweet with hurt/comfort. And a cat called Pancake.

I thought this was a story about friendship, and moving forward despite the past. I liked both Sean and Jason, and how the details of Sean’s past weren’t revealed until much later in the story. I liked how Jason persevered and was determined to do, and be, whatever Sean needed. Their love for each other felt very real, and I liked the realism of the scars, both physically and emotionally, Sean carried. Jason is very sweet, and goes that extra mile, in stark contrast to Sean’s ex.

I enjoyed about their journey from attraction, to friendship, and more. I like stories where couples take the time to get to know each other and have more in common than just enjoying a good sex life. I liked how Jason and Sean were a mix of alike and different and how the latter enriched their friendship. I also liked how different their families are—one very accepting and relaxed and supportive, while the other is formal, polite, and nothing like a family should be.

Joanna and Roger are both good friends, and I liked how they were both there for Sean and Jason. I particularly liked how Joanna, despite telling Jason to hang in there, left it to Sean to tell Jason everything when he was ready. I loved Pancake, Sean’s cat.

I loved the epilogue and catching up with them and their HEA.

Sweet, gentle and utterly heart warming.

Sigh... Jason and Sean were so lovely together and their romance was so sweetly written. Novellas very rarely pull off slow-burn well (not their fault, by necessity things have to happen relatively quickly) but this someone managed to pack the fast development of feelings and the slow-burn of a fragile romance into a single novella. My heart broke for both Jason and Sean (not in a tear you apart kind of way, more in that steady ache when lovely characters struggle). Sean has been through something incredibly traumatic that shattered his trust in others. At points there are what initially appear to be strong signs of past sexual violence - because I know that’s a hard no for lots of people, don’t worry you can keep reading as there isn’t any sexual violence mentioned, either past or present, in this book. He’s shy and skittish and feels like he has to be closed off. The way Jason was so sweetly patient with him was beautiful to read. He had his moments where he felt his own hurt/frustration but he was also able to set aside his own immediate reactions and figure out a way to move forward (even if slowly) with Sean. The secondary characters in this don’t play huge roles but they’re solid and supportive which was lovely to see.

I lovely short read that’s a definite recommend and reread!

This is a wonderful story about how the best things sometimes require almost infinite patience. Jason wants to get to know his introverted co-worker Sean and finally asks him out to talk about work things. Sean actually goes and they discover a mutual attraction that is strong and hot. There are things in Sean's past, however, that make him run from any deeper relationship and that's where the story became totally absorbing for me. Jason decides Sean is worth whatever time and attention required to make them a couple and he slowly, but surely lets Sean see that he will be there and that Sean can trust him. This could have so easily have crossed a line where Jason felt creepy, obsessive or stalkerish but it never even comes close. It is always clear how deeply he cares for Sean as a friend while hoping for more, and it is always clear Sean controls the pace and how deep the relationship goes. Watching him oh so slowly open up to Jason is lovely to see. The author makes these guys real and the pace of them coming together believable, by making their daily lives real for us. One thing I love to find out about in stories is what the characters jobs are really like, I'm fascinated by what people do in their jobs, and here we learn exactly what these characters do. They bond over work details and that opened the door into their world for me.

Double Shot is the tenth book in the Bold Brew series by author Gwen Martin. This story is told in dual perspective, which I loved. It works beautifully for this story.

This is the first time I have read anything by this author, and the first time I have read this series. I was not lost at all, and I have found a new favorite author to watch for.

West is an alcoholic that goes to AA meetings. He is gay and 42. He works from home. He visits his Nana regularly and is the proud new owner of a cat named Lily. He is a sensitive sensual man. Very kind, very hard on himself as well.

Rhys is a photographer with well to say the least a pain in the tuckus father. He is 30 years old. He is definitely not vanilla in the bedroom. He has been a part of the scene for five years. And now is slowly getting back in.

Rhys listens to all the verbal and nonverbal cues that West gives him. I liked that West needs someone special to show him the way and Rhys is the perfect man for the job. Together these two can save each other and achieve their dreams.

I loved this story and cannot wait for more from this series in the future.

This was a very short and cute story. Jason and Sean are work colleagues who have been admiring each other for a while now. Both are hesitant to start something, but then Jason makes the first step and they begin their journey to love and acceptance. Of course it is not all smooth sailing. Sean is haunted by his past mistakes and how much they cost him, so he stays cautious, occasionally downright panics and doubts everything that is happening. I liked how Jason didn't give up though. He was patient and understanding, and even after Sean panicked, he was still willing to compromise, support him and do everything to make their relationship work. I would have liked to see more of their interactions and get more details about them though, like his Greek heritage and family tensions that was so briefly mentioned only at the end, like what happened to Gareth and a bit more about the trauma and why Sean felt like he had to abandon so many activities. Regardless of my additional curiosity, it was still a cute, short, feel-good story about two wonderful guys who are developing something special :)

Fragile Heart is a nice hurt/comfort office romance by Nic Starr.

This is an office romance with an adorable first date. Sean and Jason are definitely sweet together.

I love the character development for each man. Sean cut himself off from people years ago. But with Jason, he finds someone worth risking his heart for.

It's wonderful seeing him opening up again after a past that left him scarred. The details of his past are left until the end though, for both the reader and Jason. I don't always like waiting for those details, and this is no different. I would have felt more connected to Sean if I knew about him earlier.

The opposite personalities is a large part of this story, setting the tone from the beginning. Shy, quiet, hurt Sean. And confident and outgoing Jason.

I enjoy the way things develop for the two, and I think they're great together, making for an enjoyable read.

Fragile Heart is a sweet office romance. This Nic Starr read is simply adorable, with some tender and loving moments throughout.

This is a office romance between co-workers Jason and Sean. Jason has been crushing on Sean for the last 6 months until he decides to use the excuse of discussing some work things to ask Sean out to dinner. They don’t talk about work whatsoever and end up spending more time together outside of work.

Sean has “secrets” from his past, something that really messed him up 2 years ago. It wasn’t revealed what happened until the end of the story. But it was because of this that he tried to pull away from Jason, but Jason decided he wouldn’t give up.

The whole idea was cute... I just felt a bit bored while reading this. There was a lot of work-talk and explaining what they did. It didn’t feel like it flowed all that naturally to me. This was on the shorter side, around 100 pages, but I felt like I wanted to start skimming through some parts.

I didn’t really feel all that connected to the characters either. Their dates were cute, though. The sex was hot during some parts... but I felt like it kinda needed more of that too.

I am glad that Sean got over his insecurities and Jason was patient with him. They did end up being good together in the end. Glad it was a happily ever after.

Super cute short story that was fun to read in one sitting. Jason has a crush on Sean and wants to ask him out but he’s nervous because Sean seems to be a pretty private person and he’s not sure what Sean will say. Sean has been hurt before and he’s nervous to trust again but he can’t ignore the pull he feels towards Jason.

If you enjoy short stories that are very sweet you will enjoy this story. There isn’t too much steamy scenes but there are a few lightly steamy scenes. This book is more about hurt/comfort then steam and it worked really well for this story.

I’ll definitely be reading this one again. I did receive a free ARC of this book from Gay Romance Reviews but that did not influence my review.

An updated, revised, and renamed version of an old book

I understand that this is an updated version of an old book with additions and revisions. I wanted to like it. The description of the book makes it sound right up my alley but I think it fell flat. There wasn’t any excitement or drama to add to the romance between Sean and Jason. Although we do know why Sean was shy about his body, I think his responses were over the top and felt more like ones someone would have with abuse. Obviously this is my opinion but I think the author could have taken the time to really delve into the characters if a revise and rewrite was already in the works.

The relationship between Jason and Sean was sweet. I really loved that Jason didn't give up on Sean when he was struggling with falling in love again. My heart hurt for Sean when we finally learn what happened to him that caused him to be so afraid of getting close to Jason. Jason is a really great character and I love how he cares about Sean. The scene between the two is really steamy and yet still sweet. I really loved the way that this story was written and the characters were really well written. I loved Jason and Sean's coworkers, Roger and Paula. This book overall was a great short read that brought forth so many emotions. I would recommend this book.

A great start as Jason goes agro at the office photographer bunching papers.
Yah Jason had the hots for Sean but didn't have the nerve to ask him out for a date. Includes a cat named Pancake, and a secret that's still hurting Sean after 2 years. I felt for Sean in this and was thankful he'd had Jo for a supported friend. A really great ending. I would've liked less of the narrative telling but I loved the characters.

Jason worked at a advertising company and had a crush on another company worker for the past 6 months. A Valentine's company party was coming up a perfect opportunity.
Sean had been single for awhile and needed to get back in the saddle.
