Harper Bayliss is about to pay the full price of fame. That is, if her stalker’s plans work out. Hollywood’s new favourite starlet is already feeling overwhelmed by the insecurity of her past, a family that controls her every move, and the stresses that come with her job when a brutal attack from a madman takes that stress to a whole new level. But what neither Harper nor her attacker saw coming was the 6’4”, heavily muscled ex-Marine, Nick Martell, throwing himself in harm’s way to save her. After she visits him in the hospital to offer her thanks, she can’t help but be intrigued by the man she finds beneath the bad boy exterior.
Plagued by guilt over his failure to protect the one person that mattered the most, all Nick wants is to find some peace. The tattooed former Marine is scarred, inside and out, but saving Harper Bayliss might be his first step toward redemption. What’s more, her answer to his heartfelt question is about to send them both down a path of scorching passion…and maybe even love.
With the pressures of Harper’s fame and Nick’s guilt working against them, will their feelings be enough to overcome all the obstacles, including the stalker that’s still out there? If he gets his way he’ll show them that, even if they choose each other, you seldom get to choose the last thing you see.
The Last Thing You See from USA Today bestselling author Emma South is a New Adult Romance about letting go of the past to find unconditional love in the present.
I’m in my thirties and living in New Zealand. A little over a year ago I lost somebody very close to me. I was lucky in a way, I was given enough time to make a promise. My promise was that I would never forget our young and innocent love, and it’s a promise I intend to keep.
My writing is a way to help me keep that promise. I’ve always enjoyed writing but was forced into being ‘prudent’ and giving myself over to soul-crushing office work for the sake of a steady salary. Recent events forced me to re-evaluate my priorities and I decided to take a chance. I like to put little pieces of ‘us’ into my writing, from funny conversations we had, to apocalyptic arguments, to that special feeling you get when you hop into bed fully aware that your feet are freezing but your partner doesn’t kick you away.
Even though these things are set in fictional worlds and attached to fictional characters, in a way it feels like I’m doing something that will make our love live forever. If somebody reads one of my stories and likes a joke or sheds a tear, then our love has lived on, and I thank any readers I might have for that.
I hope you enjoy my latest new adult romance novel, The Last Thing You See.
One of the main themes of this book is the differences between the way other people see us and the way we see ourselves. Nick is a tall, muscled, tattooed and scarred ex-Marine, a hell of a tough guy, maybe even a bad guy. To look at him you might think that's all he was, that he was incapable of feeling hurt. Since he returned home, nobody else looked at him the way Harper did.
Harper is a beautiful rising star in Hollywood, all everybody sees is the carefully crafted public image, the charmed life. Until she met Nick she didn't have anybody she trusted enough to tell about the very worst things that happened in her past.
In each other they find a chance to overcome their own personal tragedies, a reason to look forward to and dream of the future. A reason to love and laugh.
One of the things that provided the spark of the idea for this book was something that happened to me a couple of years ago when I wasn't in a particularly good place. I hadn't eaten in a few days, but eventually the ominous feeling in my stomach forced me out of the house and I went to buy some food.
I composed myself and wore sunglasses. When I was paying for it, the girl serving me asked how my day was. I said "Great, thanks!" and nobody was the wiser. I maintained the public image. I didn't want to make a scene. It's not like anybody there could have helped anwyay.
The experience stuck with me for some reason. I had other things to think about at first, of course, but the memory did eventually resurface and I thought it was worth pondering on. I mean, just how incredibly different were the feelings exploding under the surface in comparison to the way I presented myself? How awful was it to not have an outlet for those emotions?
These days, I write. But there are many reasons for bottling feelings up, and there are other outlets too. That's why I chose to write about a mega-star actress like Harper. I think they might be the ultimate symbol of "public-image". Fans are fascinated by them, aspire to be like them, envy them, but it's easy to forget the real people behind the image. They love, lose and hurt just like anybody else, but their jobs almost never relent with the pressure to pretend.
This book is dedicated to anybody who ever said they were fine, when they were anything but. I hope you found, or will find, your own reasons to look forward to and dream of the future, like Nick and Harper. I hope you have that someone who fills your days with love and laughter.
I have loved Emma South since the author gave me an ARC of her novel Writing our Song in 2014 (Jan) This was one of the first books I have ever reviewed.. and I was TERRrrrriiiibullle at expressing how I felt

5 Last thing you see stars
ARC for The Last Thing You See was given to me courtesy of the amazing author Releases Sept 26 Goodreads win a copy book dates are Aug 15- Sep 30 and 2 copies will be given out for it. A girl with abandonment issues and a former battle scarred Marine… oooo
I didn't know where I was, I didn't know if anyone thought I was alive.. But I did know was that I was going to die here This book wrecked my pitiful heart! Harper Bayliss is a celebrity and Nick Martell jumped in front of her and saved her from being covered in acid by her stalker which caused Harper to want to visit Nick at the hospital. Nick wasn’t the average prince charming, he was prince charming covered in scars. Nick was a former Marine who was tortured within inches of his life. These two characters fit together so perfectly. Harper loved Nick purely and never judged his past, his scars and his profession. There are a lot of really emotional scenes in this book I would hate to ruin for you. Our story ends with Harper and Nick fighting to stay alive to be with eachother. Because the last thing they saw was eachother ..
I was hoping for an update from our previous Emma South Hearththrob Jeremy Holt however no luck :P Nick works for a man who works for Holt and Harper lives down the road from Holt. I believe this book by Emma South is completely different from her Bea and Jeremy love story. This story gutted me and I cried a few times.
This being my first book by that author I have to state that i will def. look into other books from her as I really loved her writing style. She drew such a sweet an loving picture of a building relationship that it was easy to connect with both characters. And the reader should not underestimate the power of the added suspense - great book
They are both lonely and lost. They aren't searching, but they may find it, if willing to give love a chance. Will love be enough?
The Last Thing You See is a sweet romance of two lost souls that don't even know what they should be looking for. The author has created a fast-paced thriller that is easy to follow and keeps the readers wanting more. The story is intense; you read, you cry, you feel with the characters.
Harper and Nick are great well-rounded characters that don't have much in common, but as the story progress find out common ground to create a life together. Their differences are complements to each other and their willingness to compromise in favor of love is one of the best foundations any relationship can get.
I really enjoy the idea of the story, even though I find it a bit unrealistic. I'm a romantic at heart and I believe love should conquers all, but sadly I don't remember seeing any it-girl of real life getting their HEA with a person from a total different lifestyle as this couple.
This is my first book by Ms. South, but definitely not my last. I have enjoy this story. I read the book in one sitting and I'm really interested about this author's work.
I would recommend this book to all romantic souls out there that enjoy second chances and new beginnings.
"They say the last thing you see before you die is your whole life flashing before your eyes, but for me I hope it's just going to be you, looking at me for the first time, and me looking back."
I could've really gotten into this story but one of the most pivotal points was just brushed over. Nick is a tortured man on many levels but only a few are expanded on. Harper has a rough start to life but she gets answers later that change her life and we just cruise through it. an ex-marine and a movie star fall in love. they help each other heal. just when it is getting intense and I'm pulled in it just fizzled and ends. this story could've been so much more.
I really enjoyed this book. Beautifully written! I loved Harper! She's relatable and so sassy! She surprised me in certain parts of the book. example...the tie blindfold scene, and the dark fox birthday scene! I was as shocked as Nick! Nick was amazing!! He's an ex marine with some scars internally and external. He's hot and sexy but also honorable and loyal. He's got some dark secrets from the past he is struggling with, but so does she! I thought their chemistry was off the charts, and they fit together perfectly. Great read!
A fantastic story that had me turning page after page. The story is compelling and filled with emotion. Both the Harper and Nick have their share of scars but find in each other someone who can soothe those scars and open up a promise of the future. This is one I would definitely recommend.
I am a fan of Emma South's books and I enjoyed this one.
The circumstances of the two meeting was pretty unusual and I liked the way the relationship progressed. The characters were likeable and their stories were well done.
This book was incredible! So very, very good I once again found myself sacrificing sleep because I could not stop turning the pages. THE LAST THING YOU SEE by Emma South is a touching and heartfelt love story of two people who seem at first look to have nothing in common, but their souls seem to recognize a kindred spirit and they connect on a very deep level.
Their first meeting occurs when a crazed stalker of the beautiful, rising starlet Harper attacks her in public and Nick, a recently discharged Marine, just happens to be nearby and saves her with his lightening fast response. Harper visits him in the hospital to thank him and see for herself he will survive the injuries he endured for her safety. One visit becomes more as they both feel the strong attraction and sense of belonging whenever they are together. Nick becomes Harper's fight trainer for the new movie she's filming giving them a reason for spending regular time together. Despite the attraction, and because of the hidden brokenness they both struggle with, they begin as friends who quickly find themselves comfortable sharing deep secrets creating a strong emotional bond of trust and respect, and finally true love.
I absolutely loved how well Emma plays out Harper and Nick falling in love. This is not a rushed love at first sight story. This is story of second chances, of the healing power of honest and real love, and accepting yourself -- scars and all. Harper may be one of the most beautiful women in Hollywood, but the scars and insecurities of her early childhood she hides behind her public face have left her every bit as damaged and broken as Nick. Most of Nick's scars may be visible, he was captured and cruelly tortured by the enemy when he was on active duty overseas, but the worst of his pain comes from the loss and failure he feels for not protecting the one person that mattered the most. Saving Harper begins his slow trek to healing and keeping her safe from the stalker, who is still at large, and gives him a new purpose. For her part, Harper realizes she has found someone who sees her for who she truly is, expects nothing from her, loves her unconditionally, and would give his very life to protect her. She has yearned for this true acceptance her whole life.
The last Thing You See is a tender love story, with times of humor, great passion, frustration, sorrow, danger, and suspense told in a very real way through the very talented writing of Emma South. I laughed, I cried, I fumed, I sighed! The entire story is wonderful keeping my full attention and the ending is especially gripping, chilling really. Leaving this reader wondering right up until the end what would be the last thing they see. So good! 5 stars

Sometimes the worst of times can bring about the best of relationships. Harper is a rising star, a hot commodity in an industry that loves you one moment and doesn’t recognize you the next. Young, beautiful and magnetic, she becomes the object of more than just fan fever. Enter a scarred and lonely ex-Marine, with more regrets and guilt in his past than anyone should have to carry. Nick just reacts to danger, saving Harper and the rest, as they say is romantic history.
Harper seems to have it all, but her past is a dark watercolor of pain and insecurity and her present is run by the firm hand of her overbearing step-mother who has lost sight of the young woman in favor of the commercial empire Harper has become. Can these two damaged souls find a way to heal each other? Will healing Harper help Nick heal himself? An uphill battle to be together in their own little world is full of potholes and emotional roadblocks, but when physical danger once again presents itself, nothing will stop Nick from the one woman who has been able to reach him.
The Last Thing You See by Emma South is a tale of second chances, healing and self-discovery, as well as a love story against the odds. Well written and full of speed bumps, Ms. South has avoided the over-angsty, darkness that can be found in NA books as she avoids the over-the-top damaged heroes in favor of creating her own, fresh creations. Harper and Nick are both very well fleshed out and actually quite grounded, and their relationship builds with a depth that feels realistic and well-rounded as they become more than just bed partners. Sultry and heated sensual scenes will sizzle off the pages with their intensity in a physical expression of the love and trust these two have come to share as Ms.South digs deep into her well of creativity and presents a very nice addition to the genre.
I received this copy from the author in exchange for my honest review.

This is my fourth book I have read by Emma South and yet again I found by myself absolutely engrossed in a well written story with wonderfully depicted , well developed Charismtic heroine and hero.
Harper Bayliss , is a young upcoming and popular actress currently near the top of her game, loved by her fans and fully supported in her carereer path by her family, well really over supported more along the lines of be controlling Harpers mother has the ability to be controlling still since she is her business manager and her brother Is her bodyguard and he happens defer quite often to her mother. Life takes a sudden change when a crazed fan attacks her, instead of Orsen however protecting her, Nick Martell, ex-marine, and part time security steps in and takes the brunt of the attack landing him in the hospital. Nick to Harper and her family was an unexpected hero ; at a first glance Nick with his 6'4" lean body, well tattooed and scarred all over and longer hair was more someone they expected to be an attacker rather than a savior; but stepping in to save Harper lands Nick in the hospital with ven more scars . Harper being Harper and a thoughtful and grateful person visits Nick and that one simple act will change the path of both of their lives.
Harper finds herself drawn to Nick and though Nick feels the same attraction he tries desperately not to act upon it. Nick not only carries the scars of war but scars of the heart and the loss of a loved one, which leaves him believing he is no good for Harper. Harper finds comfort and safety and strength that she has never had. So much that she finds the strength to go against her mothers wishes, see more of Nick and stand up to her when it comes to role choices. As the story evolves each make the other a stronger more secure person and this crazed stalking fan will put them in the position of being the last the other sees!
Absolutely loved this book could not put it down!
Thank you to Emma South for Graciously providing an Arc copy for an honest review!
There's no training in existence to make you immune to the pain you risk when you give somebody your heart.
The Last Thing You See was a sweet short story that had so much potential but for me ended out being just an alright book. The first chapter was brilliant and drew you in to the story right from the start. The story itself flowed very nicely and it was a fun, laid back read. Harper was a very likable main character and I couldn't really fault her at all. She had a bit of a tortured past and although she was a celebrity she was still down to earth. I loved that she made most of the the moves. Harper knew what she wanted, she wanted Nick and she went about getting him no ifs or buts about it. Her mum pushed her and she pushed right on back.
In the words of Harper Bayliss every girl needs a bad boy in her past. We've all been there and we've all got that bad boy. Nick was a fantastic male lead but he certainly wasn't the bad boy that we were all looking for. Nick was so sweet and I feel like his story was sold short. I feel like there was so much more there to be told. I wanted to know more about him and about his scars but it was all brushed over fairly quickly. The same could be said for the ending the story was being built up and then bam ending.
Emma South did a fantastic job with The Last Thing You See it was just missing those little things that would've made it an amazing book. The romance between Harper and Nick flowed very nicely and certainly wasn't forced. I loved the trip to the group home and maybe a few more visits could've been added to the story as well as more flashbacks from Nick. The letter from Harper's birth mum nearly had me in tears at work and it would've been nice to know what some of the other letters had said. Overall this was a fun read and I will certainly be checking out some other books by Emma South.
Another wonderful book that evokes many different emotions.
I have been a fan of Emma South’s since reading Bea and Jeremy’s story in Remember Our Song.
This story, about Nick and Harper, was compelling and kept me reading almost non-stop until I finished the book. I say almost because I started the book quite late at night (I should know better) and had to put it down for a while so I could sleep.
I don’t believe in completely rehashing the author’s teaser in my reviews but I do try to let you know why I enjoyed the book. The characters were well fleshed out; their backgrounds were an integral part of the story and not just filler. Her writing makes you feel what they feel and there is just enough suspense in the story to keep you captivated.
This is a complete story with an HEA but I must say that it also left me wanting to know more about Harper and Nick, much the same way that I wanted to know more about Bea and Jeremy after I read Remember Our Song. I hope that Emma does what she did with Bea and Jeremy and gives us a few more stories about them. Even if she doesn’t I will look forward to reading more books from her.
I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
I received an ARC for an honest review. Loved this storyline and so will you. Harper is a young, beautiful, rising Hollywood actress. Nick is a big tough scarred ex-marine who is passing through doing odd security jobs. Fate brings them together when a crazy fan attacks Harper and Nick comes to her rescue. Nick already has scars but after acid is thrown on him when he rescues Harper he is hospitalized for his injuries. Harper is thankful for his heroic action and goes to visit him in the hospital to thank him. But there is something about him, that captivates her. One visit isn't enough and even after he is out of the hospital she finds ways to keep seeing him. The story is written from each of their POV which lets you fully get what each one is thinking and what they are dealing with. They both have scars that nobody can see and together they start to help each other start to heal. This story was so beautifully written that it is captivating and you can't stop reading this real life love story. But there is danger still waiting that will keep you on the edge of your seat. This story has you crying, laughing, happy mad and sad and loving every minute of it. You will love it too. Couldn't put it down and neither will you.
Another wonderful book that evokes many different emotions.

I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
This was a wonderful book, I think the only thing missing was a even better epilogue. I would have loved to hear about Harper and Nick in the future and how they were doing.
This book was hard to put down, it was just smooth and kept rolling. I love it when a book flows like that. I also really enjoy alternate pov's, which this book has. It was a quick romance, but so fun to watch and see it bloom. Poor Nick has been through so much, and you really feel for him and understand him, having his pov really helps to see what and how he feels.
Harper has some memories from her past give her abandonment issues, having Nick helps her with this. But I also feel that this is something she should have talked more about with her adoptive family about. At first, I really felt like her mom was a bitch, not much feelings and not really caring about what Harper wanted, only what she wanted her to have. But then at the end she was this caring, feeling mother. Didn't really feel that, it was too fast and too soon. Maybe it was always there, but I didn't see it until the end.
Overall, this book was great, it made me laugh and it also made me cry and I hated to see it end, I really enjoyed it.
i started reading this the day it came out it is a ARC review but been behind but love to read so it is one day late from day of being live but anyways .. wow Harper and Nick what a begining and in between and ending .. these two from different worlds and even though they are they still come together Harper an actress and Nick a bodyguard / ex Marine .. they both have pasts and yet it takes both of them to fight to conquer their pasts with the help of them both .. Emma South can write a story!!! She is a must read!!!
Harper and Nick meet by "accident". He becomes her hero, she becomes his. Harper is an up and coming actress, her mom is her manager and her brother stands in as a bodyguard. One day as the are walking to their car, she is attacked by a stalker/obsessed fan. Before being attacked her focus was on the man standing on the corner with scars and tattoos, but he is the one who jumps in to save her. After visiting him at the hospital she sees the good in Nick her hero, ex-marine/bodyguard and Nick realizes she is a real caring person not some fake/standoff actress. Harper feels so comfortable with Nick that she wants to spend more time with him and comes up with a plan for him to teach her jiu jitsu for her next role. They both have pasts they are trying to deal with. As this friendship grows so does their trust with one another. They soon are opening up and sharing their pasts, secrets and fears.
This story is about growing, trusting and finding the one who makes your life worth it. You will not be able to put this book down as there is so more to it!
Harper is one of Hollywoods hottest, but it hasn't turned her into some jaded person or raving B*tch like it has others. She's sweet and a good person, the life of a star is always going, but she's not one to turn her fans aways even if she's tired.
Nick was in the right place in the right time, he didn't know who it was he saved but that part didn't matter until She came into his hospital room. Everyone knows how she is, and while he might be attracted to her he knows he'd never be good enough for her.
She was attracted to him and he to her, they both have pasts that made a relationship difficult, but if they opened up it could be what they both need to be happy in their lives.
Harper does what everyone around her wants, but trying to make everyone happy comes at a price I loved seeing how she grew throughout the book and became her own person after her own happiness.
Nick has had things hard for a long time, but seeing him open himself up and allow Harper to shine some light on him again was great. I Loved how these two brought out the best in each other and helped the other be happy in their own skins.
I was gifted this book by the author in return for an honest review. If you are looking for a book that that touches you and makes you, laugh, cry and feel real love and takes you on an emotional roller coaster then this is the book for you. Harper is a rising actress with a soaring career but keeps her feet firmly on the ground, she loves being an actress but often hates what comes with it but never let's it go to her head. Harper attends a function and when she gets attacked is saved by the hot, bad boy covered in tattoos. Unfortunately the attack left Harper with a small injury, but her saviour with injuries that puts him in hospital. Harper feels responsible so visits Nick in hospital, from there they grow close and Harper asks Nick to help her train for her new film with his military background. Friendship turns to more, but both have ghosts from their pasts that they need to exorcise. Together they support each other. Can they get through their troubles, like their pasts, interfering mothers, crazy stalkers, physical scars. This book will take you on an emotional rollercoaster
Loved but as previous reviewer said I would have loved for a better ending. Harper is a and up and coming actress who hit it big time with her last movie and is becoming more popular. One day as she is walking with her mom and brother a man runs up to her with a cup in his hand to throw at her in an instant Nick an ex-marine jumps in time to save the cup of acid on her body. So starts the romance of Harper and Nick one of the things I love that she was the aggressor she went after him, not your usual romance flow but it truly worked here. Both Harper and Nick are wounded souls though she is famous she still cannot deal thoroughly with her been raised in an orphan and then being adopted to Nick being tortured while in the Marines and is now feels dead inside. There is a lot action, intrigue happening its amazing the author was able to get it all down to less than three hundred pages. It was a lovely book and I will be intrigued to read more of Emma South.
So.. Nick isn't your average 'knight in shining armour' type, an ex-marine with serious physical and mental scars it seems like he truly believes he has nothing left to live for. So he's just coasting along when he saves a beautiful young girl from being covered in acid. Beautiful young girl is none other than a famous actress, Harper. Breaking free from the conrtol her mother/manager inforces on her life Harper sees beyond Nick's scars and doubts and falls in love with him just as he falls in love with her. They both have issues to climb. Pasts that need to be worked out in order for their lives to work. We watch as each helps the other whilst falling more in love and facing the issues that come with 'Hollywood dating.' I liked it. There is enough of a mixture between seriousness, sweetness and passion and it was easy to read flowing smoothly. I didn't love it, though. I was left wanting just a little something.... more.
This is one of those stories that you will think it is going one way and it goes totally the opposite. Harper Bayliss is the latest big thing in Hollywood. When someone tries to hurt her, Nick is there to step in front of her and he takes most of it and winds up in the hospital. When Harper visits him, he can't believe that she is really there. While Harper wants to get to know him better. They seem to be from different worlds but they are perfect together. This story will have you laughing and crying and rooting for Harper and Nick. I loved this one and loved how Emma even had a small place for Jeremy Holt too even if just in name. If you are looking for a great heartfelt story then you can't go wrong with any of Emma South's stories. **Copy provided by the author in exchange for my honest review**
More than a new adult romance, this also has a small element of suspense.
Harper is a movie star, young and up and coming. She meets Nick after he saves her from having acid thrown on her by a psycho fan. Much to the chagrin of her controlling manager mother, H embarks on a relationship with Nick. He's got a troubled and literally tortured past... and she's not as glitz and glamour as we first think.
I loved reading about the development of their relationship, but I hated the last 20% of the book. I don't always love the endings, but there's no real indication of an HEA here. Is this a cliffhanger? It's hard to tell. Harper has some real family issues to contend with that a 5 minute conversation with the mom isn't going to solve. And what about Nick's future? Too many questions that needed some resolution before I let go of these characters.
I was lucky enough to receive an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review. The Last Thing You See is the first book I've read by Emma South and I can definitely say, I will be reading more of her books.
This book is addictive, enthralling, and supremely well-written. Emma South's characters have real flaws, real strengths, and real passion. These characters become real and you feel their emotions. To see the relationship between Nick and Harper develop throughout this story was great.
The Last Thing You See is an unforgettable, emotional story of love and healing, fate and circumstances, hope, second chances, and moving on. It's a story of how true love can conquer obstacle after obstacle and come out stronger.
I loved this book read it in one sitting I laughed, cried, and got hott everything I love in a book. Nick is an amazing guy who's been through hell and back he like a empty shell until he meets Harper saving her life. She sees him the way no one else sees him people automatically thinks criminal with tattoos and scars even Harper thought so the first time she sees him. Harper can't believe he jumped in front of her and saved her from being attacked but when she sees him in the hospital bed and open his eyes she was memorized. Emma South is one of my favorite authors and she wrote an amazing book.
I received an ARC eBook in exchange for an honest review. This is the first book I have read by Emma South and it most definitely won't be my last! This book is about a true love or what true romantic love should be. Harper and Nick's story is about discovering a love that not only saves you but saves the other as well. Two beautifully flawed people who rescues each other from their past hurts and offers each a hope for a brighter future. Beautifully written with some nail-biting suspense, some interfering family drama and a whole lot of self-discovery amidst true love! I highly recommend this book from a MUST-READ Author!

This book is about two worlds colliding and then trying to fit together. Harper is a beautiful, well known actress who gets saved from an attack by scarred ex Marine, Nick. When the two of them get to actually meet, Harper is intrigued and wants see more of Nick, whereas Nick sees that the differences between them are too vast. Harper finds a way to keep Nick in her life for a little bit longer, just enough time for them to get to know one another a bit more. What follows is a relationship where they help each other to deal with their painful pasts and to create a beautiful future together, with a few ups and downs along the way.
