His heart was as hard as the rockbound coast of Maine. Could the radiance of her love light their way?
Emily - Glowing with hope, she longed for the love of a husband she barely knew.
Keith - Dark and brooking, he was a man with a dismal past and a seemingly lusterless future. Emily was his one chance for happiness.
Jason - The ship's captain burned with excitement and adventure and caused Emily to fear her feelings.
On a remote island Keith kept the lighthouse and Emily nurtured her brand-new marriage. But Jason, thrust upon them by the sea, threatened their fledgling love.
The light of faith was all that Emily had to show her the way to her husband's heart. She knew she must follow that light to the contentment that ever seemed just beyond her reach.
Kathleen Karr was born in Allentown, Pennsylvania, and grew up on a chicken farm in Dorothy, New Jersey. After escaping to college, she worked in the film industry, and also taught in high school and college. She seriously began writing fiction on a dare from her husband. After honing her skills in women’s fiction, her children asked her to write a book for them, (It Ain’t Always Easy, Farrar, Straus & Giroux, 1990), and she discovered she loved writing for young readers.

On the rugged Maine coastline, Keith is a lighthouse keeper. He brings his new bride Emily to join him. Basically a shotgun wedding between a lonely widowed lighthouse keeper and a young woman who at 20 was thought to be a spinster. Wow what a life. Only a boat to transport them back and forth from a small island during the 3 or 4 warm months of the year, this definitely would not be my cup of tea. Between weather, misunderstandings, and the body of a living ship's captain washing ashore, the couple doesn't seem to stand a chance of growing in their marriage. I loved the fact that Emily stood up for herself and didn't let Keith's moodiness overtake her. A short, sweet historical romance read that involved characters who both had some past issues to overcome. But I really enjoyed how they worked through the problems even when at times they were each ready to give up.
I read and reread and reread this book when I was growing up so I thought I would pick it up again to see if it was as good as I remembered it. I was surprised at how well it was written as I expected it to be not so well done.
Another old-favorite short romance book that I have owned for well over thirty years. This one is about a lighthouse keeper and his unique history and romance. One of those marry-first-and-then-become-acquainted stories--but this one really worked for me. It has its convenient moments, but sometimes those tropes are just fun. Anyway, I'm enjoying reading through old favorite books this month. :-)
