While fighting the War on Drugs in Latin America, Marine Brody Teller was involved in an accident that left him with a supernatural power: a deep connection to the sea and the ability to control it.
When the mysterious Joe Smith approaches him with an incredible job offer, Brody thinks it’s too good to be true. His life-saving need and his desire to be near the ocean while earning a living are rolled into one perfect job.
Rayna Lopez lives a quiet life as she tries to climb her way up the CIA ladder, always in fear the government will learn of her family lineage. When her father asks for help getting her famous and belligerent half-sister out of trouble, Rayna reluctantly agrees to travel with her and they board a yacht where they will be protected.
Brody and Rayna realize they’ve met before, and despite a significant lack of trust between them, they face an attraction neither can deny. As they fight to keep Rayna’s sister alive, lies are revealed and secrets are told. They must both learn to trust each other, and—if they live through their voyage—figure out what to do about their whirlwind romance.
USA Today best-selling author Carly Fall is a wife, a mother and a slave to the dog, Nicky. She is the author of the award-winning series, the Six Saviors. She is also the author of the Supernatural Renegades series, and other paranormal and contemporary romance.
Interesting story and ideas but I couldn't help but feel like it was missing a big part in term of explanations. I mean, the government is experimenting on soldiers, giving them supernatural abilities but as soon as they get them, they are put aside, discharged and told be stay put and to forget everything... Doesn't seem very logical and it kept bothering me.
As for the characters Brody is quite leery of people, always expecting the worse, just like the sea he is connected to, he can change in a heartbeat. As for Rayna, a CIA agent who is also the daughter of a South American Cartel Lord... A bit too much to be believed honestly. As for her personality, pretty standard I would say, nothing special about her.
Their story is nice, set in a paradisal place that makes you want to go on a cruise and swim with dolphins :)
Awesome start to what I think will be a great series. If there's one thing I know Carly Fall can do, it's Alpha hunks with paranormal powers and the women who love them. I LOVED Brody, who is a bit abrasive but with good reason. After reading about his background and how the military screwed him out of having any sort of life at all, I felt bad for him. While jerky heroes aren't my thing, a gruff man with a dark past are a whole different matter. He was complex and sexy, and I enjoyed getting to know him as a character. Rayna was the girl next door, but with a bit more attitude and grit. I liked how she didn't take crap from Brody and called him out on his BS when he needed it. As a couple they were sweet and their chemistry was hot!
I'm looking forward to reading more, and unlocking some of the mystery surrounding the government cover-up of the 'accident' that changed Brody's life, as well as the elusive John Smith, who offers Brody a job that helps him go off the radar, escape the government, and use his gift all at the same time. I'm also hoping more of Brody's lost platoon shows up. If they're anything like Brody, I'm even more anxious to meet them.
This is a really promising start to a new series. It was fast paced and the characters are very likeable. Except Heidi. You'll see why nobody likes Heidi when you read it...

REVIEW: 4.5 stars--BY SEA is the first installment in Carly Fall’s adult, contemporary Supernatural Renegades paranormal romance series focusing on a team of former marines whose last (secret) mission left each member of the platoon with a supernatural power. This is CIA agent Rayna Lopez and former Marine Brody Teller’s storyline.
Told from third person point of view, the storyline focuses on Brody Teller. Near bankrupt and having to endure the monthly visits from the government’s muscle ensuring he has not revealed the truth about the mission that went horribly wrong, Brody is in desperate need of a quick influx of cash or risks losing everything he owns. Enter the mysterious Joe Smith, who makes Brody an offer he cannot refuse. Joe knows all about Brody’s abilities and he is hoping Brody will accept everything he has to offer. Brody will become the captain of his own yacht where people looking to hide from the world become guests until the trouble back home goes away.
Rayna Lopez is a CIA agent whose latest assignment had been to check on former Marine Brody Teller. With no information about what happened to Brody, Rayna is taken aback when the seemingly healthy Brody is emotionally distant and angry at the world. With thoughts of Brody on her mind, Rayna will find herself months later, once again, face to face with Brody Teller when she accompanies her half sister a world away. Their less than honorable father has made arrangements for his daughter’s protection, on board a yacht, where seclusion and anonymity are guaranteed.
The relationship between Brody and Rayna is one of immediate attraction although their initial meeting was anything but pleasant. Brody becomes suspicious of Rayna’s involvement in the latest assignment knowing that Rayna continues to work for the very people who have threatened to take down Brody on a monthly basis. Now that Rayna knows Brody’s whereabouts, it is only a matter of time before someone else comes looking for the former marine.
The sex scenes are intimate, sensual and intense. From the Captain’s deck to an underwater cave, Brody and Rayna discover that no place is off limits when it comes to their sexual needs.
The world building reveals some of the background information about what happened to Brody’s platoon but very little is revealed about the nature of their supernatural powers or how they came to be. The secondary characters include the members of Brody’s crew, Rayna’s sister and the mysterious Mr. Joe Smith. There is also a single mother and her son who played a small role in Brody’s life but with their move, Brody is left alone with no one else to care.
BY SEA is an amazing and suspense filled storyline about betrayal, government secrets and finding love. It is a story about two people who would never have met under normal circumstances but by fate and an assignment, found one another not once but twice in a matter of a few months.
Carly Fall has a gifted imagination where the supernatural blends with a contemporary storyline of romance and love; where fantasy and fiction equals seduction of the mind; and where the reader is pulled into a provocative and wondrous world-one page at a time.
FYI - this book is free on Amazon at the time of this review. :)
4 stars
This was a very good story. I liked both Brody and Rayna and couldn't help but want them to get together. Their story was very good and kept me engaged until the end. This is the first story I've read by this author and I liked it well enough that I'm likely to try more of her work in the future.
Rayna is a CIA agent who's currently desk-bound but is trying hard to prove herself to her boss so she cane move into field work. Rayna's father is the head of a drug empire and she's had to keep her relationship with him secret in order to get and keep her job with the CIA. Rayna also has a half sister (who's a rising pop star) who she loves but finds trying at times.
Brody is an ex-marine who's had a rough time of it. He's always loved the sea since he grew up with a father that ran a fishing boat. When Brody was on a mission in the marines, things went to hell and Brody got changed somehow, suddenly having an affinity for the sea and even having some control over it. He found himself ejected from the military, deposited in a crap half-life and threatened with death if he tried to investigate or contact anyone about what happened to him.
Rayna's first chance at field work ends up being a babysitting duty. Her boss asks her to go to check on Brody and make sure he's keeping his head down and not doing stuff he shouldn't. Rayna kind of got thrown in the deep end because Brody's previous "visits" usually started with him waking up with a gun to his head and threats about compliance or death. So when Rayna shows up, Brody is understandably rude to her and just wants her out of his face. Rayna thinks Brody is very rude but she also sees the bad position that Brody is in and the pain and sadness he deals with after getting screwed over by his own government. Once she leaves they don't ever expect to see each other again but they both feel the lingering attraction that was beneath the animosity of their first meeting.
Rayna goes back to her desk job but soon gets a call from her father who asks her to help protect her sister. Rayna is reluctant to take the time off (thinking it'll hinder her efforts to get noticed at work) but eventually agrees. Their father sets up a private security firm to protect them on a yacht until he can deal with the threat but what Rayna doesn't know is that the captain of the yacht is Brody. Brody had disappeared and no one knew where he'd gone and when he and Rayna see each other again for the first time, the animosity flairs. Brody thinks she's there for him and it takes some time and effort for Rayna to convince him she's not. Once they agree to a truce, the hidden attraction spikes between them and soon they're having trouble keeping their hands off each other. They manage to deal with the threats to their safety but there's still the difficulty of how they can be together. Thankfully, they manage to figure that out and Brody and Rayna end the story starting their HEA together.
This was a very enjoyable story. I liked both Rayna and Brody as MCs and couldn't help but root for them to get together. I liked the story very much and was a bit sorry to see it end. I'd recommend this story. :)
* note - I listened to the audio version of this book and the narrator did a pretty good job.
By the time I had read 120 or so of this 222 page book without once rolling my eyes or wondering what the hell the author was thinking I knew I would have loved to finish it right away but since it was 2:00AM I knew I couldn’t. There’s a lot of dialogue in this and it’s just perfect. No stupid remarks, no stupid statements, no stupid questions, just simple intelligent conversations.
And the backstory of Brody being experimented on, with the rest of his team, and what he could then do was fascinating.
And Joe Smith was a fascination, too. Jason seemed to be a nice guy, Katie was so happy all the time, Heidi was such a grouch all the time, but they were all a capable bunch that's for sure. And Margarita was so self-absorbed it was sickening, and she never got any better. I wouldn’t have minded if she got killed.
LET’S TALK SEX
The sexual attraction between Brody and Rayna was very exciting, it’s so much better than them feeling nothing for one another then suddenly there’s sex. That’s so terrible. They had sex on deck and it was nice. There was one part that I thought wasn’t at all necessary but some of you won’t mind it, I’m sure. They made love in a cave next, while they were snorkeling. They made love in the shower last. So, not ever in a bed.
LET’S TALK SWEARING
The F-BOMB was let lose 23 times. That’s all you need to know.
This was just an awesome book! Full of adventure, gun battles, lies, deceit, lots of fun, love and some great sex. You can't ask for more than that.
This was free with KU and the audible was only $1.99 but I just decided to read it.
Brody Teller was changed forever when an explosion surprised his SEAL team and gave him the ability to control the sea. When Agent Rayna Lopez is sent to check on him, he gets her out of his house as quickly as he can manage. After she leaves, Brody takes a position as captain on a protective ship detail. Rayna is surprised to find herself recruited by her father to protect her sister on said ship. Brody and Rayna quickly grow closer, even though they still mistrust each other.
Audiobook narrated by Gordon Palagi. He doesn't try to use drastic voices. By subtly modulating his natural speaking voice, he distinguishes between characters without being over-the-top.
If you're looking for a supernatural read on the sea with sparks and dolphins, this is the book for you!
I was pleasantly surprised at how well this story flowed. There was mystery, sex and a happy ending. Thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. The characters are strong and entertaining as well as dangerous. Must read for a good time.
Great book, loved it, can't wait to read more. Carly is a new author for me., I enjoyed her writing style, it was interesting it had action, it was slightly different to the norm definitely worth reading.
CIA Agent Rayna Lopez is asked to perform a simple check up on a former Marine that has developed special powers after an 'accident' in Latin America. Brody Teller is bitter and obnoxious but also drop dead gorgeous and makes all her girly bits sit up and take notice, pity that she will never see him again, or so she thinks. She's wrong!
Brody Teller just wants his life back, but that's not going to happen. Not when he has the ability to control the sea and his own Dolphin Cheerleading squad. So when he is offered a way out from under his government watchdogs by Joe Smith he takes it. How difficult can it be providing protection to people in need on a yacht in the Caribbean?
His newest assignment is 'Diva' Margarita Garcia, who unknown to him is Rayna's half-sister and daughter of Daniel Gomez, head of an infamous drug cartel. When Rayna arrives with her sister he is suspicious of her motives but can't stay away from her. As the danger escalates, so does the sexual attraction but how do two people so different find common ground. If they can stay alive long enough they just might get the answer.
I really enjoyed this book and would recommend to all bookworms who love Military Romantic Suspense with more than a hint of the paranormal.
I find it hard to believe that the daughter of the lord of a drug cartel would simultaneously want to be a CIA agent and still tolerate her fathers activities. It doesn't work. If she does want to be a CIA agent, I don't believe she would ignore finding a fugitive, no matter how attractive she finds him.
I find it hard to believe that the gov't would have shunted Brody to the side like that. If the gov't experimented on their soldiers all unknowing to get them super-powered, and they had succeeded, they would be using them, not disposing of them.
Also, the things Brody said to Rayna when he suspected her of betraying him were unforgivable. He had very little to base his suspicions on and he jumped straight to a verdict of guilty and then crucified her, figuratively speaking.
In one minute, Brody and the rest of his team, went from soldiers checking out a warehouse in the jungle, to surviving an explosion that left each with a supernatural ability which results in them being discharged from the service and ordered not to tell anyone about what happened. Enter Joe Smith with a job offer that will suit Brody much better than the life he is currently living. He'll be able to use his military skills to protect people and get away from the government that has done him and his team wrong. Find out what happens when he is hired to protect CIA agent, Rayna's sister.
The premise is slightly more believable than a M. Night Shamalad movie. I liked the little bit of the characters we see. It's more a vacation story brought to life. While I'm sure Ms. Fall had a great time in the Virgin Islands. The lack of depth in the description and characterization gets to be annoying. It has way too many elements to focus on so, she focused on none of them. And you care about none of them. Overall easy pass for the rest of the series.
This was an okay paranormal romance book, just not my cup of tea.
I don’t think the whole government experiment angle was utilised to a great extent, and neither were Brody’s abilities. And then there is the whole Heidi business that seems to crop up out of nowhere, and that cartel business was such a goldmine for possible plots that were just overlooked. Could have been a great 500+ page book.
read for the "Warrior's Way" space in Romanceopoly 2019.
while serving as a Special Forces Marine, mysterious events leave Brody (and his teammates, who have other books in the series) with special powers and a new connection to the sea/ocean.
Rayna was a good MC as a CIA analyst questioning her career path. Her sister was seriously over the top - as was her "secret" father.
The beginning of another fun series from Carly Fall
Love story, Mexican cartel, paranormal...what could go wrong!
Loved it! Love story among two misfits who both were dedicated to their country, but ended up getting shafted. Brody, a military experiment gone wrong and Rayna, young CIA agent trapped in a desk job! A lot of coincidences happen that end up putting these two together! The story that follows is sexy, interesting and well written to the point where I felt like I was in the Virgin islands myself!
Bello, paranormale fino a un certo punto che è quello di mio gradimento. Ottima descrizione dei personaggi e storia coinvolgente. Spero traducano il resto della serie!! Consigliato, soprattutto a chi ama la Nalini Singh in Psy.
Sweet simple and great love story. You've got the Marines, special powers, and strong independent and intelligent women all rolled into a neat storyline. I recommend this to all over 18! Steamy scenes and language.
I found this quite slow in pace when I first started reading it but I did percivier and I and I am glad I did as it was like a good wine and improved over time

Brody Teller doesn’t have much left in life. As a former Marine, the government has demanded his silence and is forcing him to live a quiet life, hiding the fact that while on his last mission, an explosion left him with a supernatural power. He has a connection to the ocean—so much so that if he’s away from it for too long he becomes ill. When he’s offered a job that gets him out from under the government’s thumb while also putting him on a boat full time, he has nothing to lose and takes the job of Captain and security guard.
Rayna Lopez is trying to work her way up from her desk job in the CIA. But when her father asks for her help to protect her sister, Rayna accepts because family comes first. The sisters board a yacht to help keep them out of harm’s way while their father deals with her sister’s stalker. Rayna feels an attraction to Captain Brody, the man she was previously assigned to check on who she knows has a supernatural ability. But with their time short and danger lurking, starting a relationship is the last thing either of them can afford. Brody’s on the run from the government and Rayna needs to return to her government job, so they’re doomed before they even get started.
By Sea is a contemporary paranormal romance with a touch of military, some action, and some drama. The hero is a former Marine, and we see a bit of his past and the mission that ended his military career. There’s also involvement from a drug cartel. The hero and heroine have to work together to save Rayna’s sister in addition to their budding romance. The paranormal aspect comes in the form of Brody’s ability to control the water. Dolphins seem to flock to him and communicate with him, but his moods are also reflected in the temperament of the ocean.
The plot was interesting and had a nice mix between the romance, drama, and action, keeping me engaged and curious to know what was going to happen next. Brody’s supernatural ability was an interesting addition, although it didn’t seem to add much to the story. We were shown how it worked early in the story and little bits were carried through Brody’s point of view, but other than using the power once during the climax it didn’t have much impact on the rest of the plot.
Some parts of the plot didn’t quite fit and drew me out of the story. Rayna’s father was head of a drug cartel, which happened to be involved in Brody’s accident—a little too convenient and not really necessary. What really threw me was that Rayna could be part of the CIA without anyone knowing her father was the leader of the drug cartel. It was explained as not being listed on her birth certificate, but considering how she had continued contact with him her whole life, it wasn’t plausible that she could have gotten through a background check. There was also a specific reference to Rayna being denied an agency cell phone because of her family lineage, so someone must have known her link to her father. I was able to figure out the issue that led to the boat’s whereabouts being located without any problem, which dampened the climax for me.
While some chapters were short and choppy, some of the story focused too much on telling instead of showing, and there was too much repetition. Although told in dual points of view, the repetition came more from the actual narrative rather than overlapping scenes told by both characters. I also found the dialogue a bit stiff and unnatural.
Even with some editing errors that I found while reading, I mostly enjoyed the plot. Although part of a series, this book is a standalone. Three stars for this supernatural romance.
When I saw the cover of this book I was like OMG this looks hot beyond words. So I requested a copy from the author through the book machine. I was over the moon when my request was acknowledged and I couldn't wait to begin reading.
If I was to rate this book based on its cover I would give it a five star rating, however, there is more to a book than its cover. I was intrigued by the concept of this story which I thought was unique and could not wait to dive between the pages.
By Sea takes you into the world of the military, CIA and the drug cartel. Brody is a marine who was sent on a mission to Guatemala to destroy a warehouse belonging to the cartel. While he was there, an accident happened that led to him being discharged from the military. In addition he was forced to sever all ties with his past that included the members of the team who went with him on the mission. He was forced to relocate to Corpus Christi where he became the captain of a fishing boat. Life is not going too well for him, however, this would change when a stranger made him an offer that he could not refuse.
Rayna Lopez is a CIA operative who is eager to begin working in the field. As such, when her boss gave her an assignment, she was exhilarated. However, her exhilaration was temporary when she found out that the assignment involved monitoring a former marine, to ensure that he was not revealing any government secrets. After their encounter she never expected to cross paths with him again. However, due to sheer coincidence these two will find themselves interacting once again.
The story is interesting, however, I felt that there was a lot missing. Why would the government be conducting experiments on soldiers, giving them supernatural liabilities, hide them away and threaten them with death if they should reveal this secret? I thought this was very strange. What I also found disturbing was that the CIA would hire the daughter of an infamous drug cartel to work for them. Don’t they usually carry out extensive research on persons whom they are hiring? Also, who is Joe Smith and what is his agenda? All these questions and no answers provided.
The story started out slow and it took some while before things started heating up. It was not until about 60% into the book that the pace picked up. It was at this point that I had a hard time putting down the book. To say I was eager to discover what was coming next is an understatement. There are some twists which, when it came I was thinking wow! However, at the same time I was thinking “Why am I not surprised?” This reaction was based on how some of the characters behaved throughout the story.
I enjoyed the story, however, I was not satisfied with the way it was wrapped up as I still had a lot of questions that were not answered. In spite of this I would recommend it to readers who are looking for sweet romantic read with a twist.
