Awkward Moments Children's Bible #2

Awkward Moments (Not Found in Your Average) Children's Bible, Vol. 2

Rate this book
STILL NOT FOR KIDS! If you thought our first bestseller was inappropriate for kids, this volume is barely appropriate for adults! More incest, genocide, talking animals, wrestling matches, martyrs, abortion, magic, homosexuality and selficide! What would Jesus do? You might be surprised what His own family thought of Him! From the opening foreword by Evangelical pastor, author, and professor Dan Kimball (of Vintage Faith Church), to the challenging commentaries in the second half of the book, Awkward Moments Children's Bible is much more than an irreverent book for your coffee table! Readers of all faiths will find themselves laughing out loud while being encouraged to think about the Bible in a new way.

Let's be honest - there are some things in the Good Book that are just... awkward! There are verses we'd like to forget or that have been changed throughout the centuries. There are many verses you've never heard before in church, let alone seen in your average children's Bible! Not to mention the verses that have been added over the centuries!

Most people were raised in the faith chosen by their family. Young children learn a few Bible stories taken out of context and accept them without question. (On what basis could they possibly question their parents or church leaders?) After decades of repetition and tradition, it's understandable that we might put our beliefs on auto-pilot and just nod as a pastor repeats the verses and ideas that are already familiar and comfortable to us. It's no wonder that recent studies show an incredible lack of Biblical knowledge among Christians - 55% unable to even name the four Gospels of the New Testament - the very foundation of Christianity!

The Goal? Awkward Moments encourages readers to really understand what is in their Bibles and think for themselves about the context of Biblical teaching. The 32 color illustrations and included commentaries will likely challenge some readers to reflect on how religion continues to shape the lives and culture of future generations. If readers happen to laugh out loud in the mean time - it's just an added bonus!

Skeptical about a verse? Crack open your favorite Bible and read along to share the Good News with friends!

REMEMBER: Don't blame us, it's in the Bible!

HORUS GILGAMESH was raised Catholic before being “born again” in college when he began following a calling toward full-time ministry. Early on, his efforts were focused on youth evangelism and Biblical literacy around the world. When he was on a missions trip to Africa, a fearless young boy approached, pleading, “Chakula? Maji?“- the Swahili words for “food” and “water.” Unfortunately, Horus had no food or water to offer the poor child – only Bibles.

A few days later, Horus met a humanitarian relief worker from Spain who shared five simple words of wisdom that would change his life forever – “Empty stomachs have no ears.” Horus realized that he was not meeting the very real needs of the people he was hoping to help – he was struggling to finding a purpose in his own life, as a self righteous servant of his Creator.

To many Christians, the most important gift you could ever give to a man is a chance at eternal life through the Gospel of Jesus Christ – the Living Water. But what about this life? There are billions who would give anything for a drink of regular old H2O.

Over the years, Horus became more interested in critical needs and social justice initiatives, helping those at risk of severe poverty, disease, or violence. The pain and suffering he saw first hand led him to be more and more troubled by God’s apparent disregard for the children of His creation. This led Horus to years of re-studying the Bible for himself, away from the “rose-colored” teachings of any church or seminary. He never returned.

Another poignant, spoit on take on showing how ridiculous the "literal truth" is when dealing with the holy book the majority of our western civilisation's citizens deems worthy to rule their daily lives... and it's gorgerously illustrated too.

Just as good, if not better, than the first volume!
Man, I can't believe I didn't see this stuff when I was neck deep in Christianity. Oh wait - actually, I can believe it. Strap in and hold on tight for more Awkward Moments!

More stories not found in the everyday church. The more I read and saw the more I enjoyed. The afterward where the inside jokes and visual gags were explained is my favorite.

Still way not for children. Well, maybe.

I finished up the second volume of Awkward Moments (awkwardmomentsbible.com) and I must say it really was better than the first (If that is possible). The book tackled more complicated stories and issues and I really got the feeling that the authors passion went to a different level. Issues such as "The Ultimate Privilege of sacrifice", "The new Christian Holy War", "Under God in the classroom", "Burning the Trash" and one of my personal favorites "I am nothing with Jesus".

Simply put this book is amazing! It tackles more of Biblical stories and really shows how ridiculous all these things are when put into a realistic perspective. The attitude of the author is not one of hatred or anger but instead just presents the facts and encourages the Christian (or anyone else) to objectively consider the historical facts and reason.

I would encourage everyone to read it. Yes even children although depending on their background it could be rather shocking. I would especially put a challenge out there to all my Christian friends and anyone who has posted a "God is Love. Like if you agree" on Facebook. (Clearly God is not Love.) So come on all you Christians and "Christian Up" and put your big boy pants on and grab your favorite version of the Bible and try to get through this book with a critical thinking open mind. I really doubt you can do it, but I hope you can. You will be better for it and I won't tell your pastor. It will be our little secret .

Horus Gilgamesh is a fun author to read. He has a strong background in historical religion and has lived in the ministry many years before writing this book. His insight is well thought out and he has a humble attitude toward delivering the material. He knows what he is talking about. It is a great read!

Note: No kool-aid was consumed while writing this review. (read the book)

Easter Egg: The forward is written by a pastor (minister).

Gilgamesh and Tickheathen knock another one out of the park.

While I enjoy the passages and illustrations immensely, I (like many others, I'm sure) relate to much of the commentary.

It's refreshing to know there are so many others who experienced the same breaking away from their Christian (or any religious) upbringing and now see it for what it was. The eloquence with which Gilgamesh relates that experience, this time around a little more personal than the first, speaks to this reader and, hopefully, to the multitudes of readers this will have.

Can not wait for volume 3.

Keep fighting the good fight.

It Ain't Necessarily so.

The second volume in this series is just as engaging and thought provoking as the first. My favorite line is the one comparing evangelical missions to the crusades with swords being replaced by water bottles and expecting the same results. Everyone who is old enough to think critically should read the bible and other "holy" books. This book does a nice job of pointing out some of the more uncomfortable passages from the source that Christians who want a theocracy in the United States quote so often.

The book was more interesting than the first, and it is funny in a dark way. The book's foreword was -1 star; it was so lame. It was written by a christian saying that he likes how the book challenges what he knows about the bible, and that with the book he reinforces his beliefs in the bible, blah blah blah, and finally some pitiful examples of scientists who believe in the bible. That was a very feeble way to show that a christian may like the book. It could have been a blog entry, or summarized in few lines and put in the book's back cover.

Awesome!

I was one of the many people demanding they turn those illustrations into a book since the very beginning. The commentary was extremely interesting and the illustrations are hilarious in a dark humor kind of way. Kindle version looked awesome on my kindle HD 6. 5 stars!

This is great haha. A simple way to expose the ridiculousness of many bible stories. The end of the book has a detailed explanation of all the references. I would definitely put this on my coffee table haha.

Love it!

Very witty & poignant, satire at it's finest! The series needs to continue. It should cover the rest of the bible & all the random things Christians believe that never were in the bible. Yet they'll argue till judgement day that they are.

Hilariously illustrated with very thought-provoking commentary. I like how it doesn't hold back and openly calls out the craziest stuff in the Bible. Even Jesus gets taken to the woodshed.
